Clocking Up The Miles Gary King Good afternoon everybody and welcome to our opponents today Bideford FC.

They do take their toll when they stack up like this and we do have one or two carrying knocks indeed Crackers is unable to make the trip to Frome. It is commendable that we have not lost away from home in any of the fixtures mentioned above so I am hoping that continues against Frome. Since my last notes we have played two away games, the first leg of the League Cup Final against Tiverton Town and Biggleswade Town in the Calor league. The Cup Final was a tough encounter, Tiverton were a good side who are used to winning and not conceding too many goals, it was easy to see how they have beaten three teams in our division already this season.

We were solid on the night and I was pleased to come away with a draw albeit a score draw would have been better as the away goal does count in this competition. That said, when you take everything into consideration, we are not playing catch up and a win here at Rowley Park on the 8th April will see us secure silverware.

The Biggleswade game was a dire affair. They are a side who hit the front men and wingers early and play very little football very frustrating for us. It is fair to say it was an ugly game and we were disappointed to come away from there with just one point.

I am writing todays notes as we prepare to set off for the away fixture against Frome. It is the fifth week on the trot we have had to endure a long away trip having done Redditch twice, Truro, Tiverton and now Frome. I, as I am sure everybody will be, pleased to have this one behind us; the last of the long midweek journeys.

St Neots excellent form continued as they carved out a well-deserved victory over the improving Deeping who had not lost in their previous four league and cup matches. The victory moved St Neots within six points of fourth placed Cogenhoe with three matches in hand. St Neots were once again solid in defence with skipper Nicky Hurst continuing his rich vein of form and Gary Watts back to his best and in the second half there was a welcome return after injury for Jon Hoggett as the longer-term injury list begins to diminish. Deeping began well and almost went ahead in the seventh minute when Dave Robertson beat Steve Young to the ball to lob goalwards but Nicky Hurst got back to clear off the line. Home keeper Dan Bircham then produced a quality save to push away a shot by Gary Walker after James Hatch had used his pace to outwit his marker on the quarter hour and St Neots thought they had forged ahead two minutes later when Steve Kuhne put the ball in the net but he was ruled offside. Deeping had two more gilt edged chances to take the lead, first a mistake by Matt Endersby let in Aaron Last but his shot was too close to Young who saved well and then poor marking at a corner

gave Wayne Oldacre a free header but again Young was equal to his effort. The impressive Ricky Dear saw a shot pushed for a corner and then St Neots went ahead after a controversial decision five minutes before the break. Steve Kuhneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s header from a Cameron Clark cross looked to have cleared the bar unaided but the referee judged that Bircham had got a touch and awarded a corner and from Mark Franklinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cross Nicky Hurst won the ball in the air for James Hatch to stab home from close range. The half time break saw a deterioration in the weather and St Neots kicked off the second half against a gale and driving rain. For ten minutes they struggled to get the ball out of their own half but as the rain subsided they began to boss the play again. After 68 minutes Mark Franklin set up his second goal of the match with a free kick to the far post headed back by Gary Watts for Steve Kuhne to apply the finishing touch. St Neots then sent on substitutes Jon Hoggett and Sean Murray for Franklin and Walker and apart from a Robertson volley that flashed wide the home side produced nothing to threaten St Neots two goals cushion.

Ten minutes from time Steve Kuhne claimed his 38th league and cup goal of the season rising unchallenged at the near post to head home a Matt Endersby corner and that clinched the three important points. St Neots: Young, Clark, Endersby, Watts, Hurst, Dear, Franklin (Hoggett 68 mins), Maltay (Jordan 81 mins), Kuhne, Walker (Murray 76 mins), Hatch. Subs not used: Grant and Fox. Goals: Kuhne 2 (68 mins & 80 mins), Hatch 40 mins.

Young Guns Reach More Cup Finals Our young guns have achieved more success in reaching numerous cup finals. SAINTS U8s Under 8 Saints Sky have reached the final of the Hunts Mini Soccer “Champions League” U8 competition. The final will be held against Rowdies at Needingworth on Saturday 26th April 1130 kick off. Well done to Johnny, Luke, Archie, Shay, Kane, Tom and Lewis and best of luck for the final! SAINTS U13s Hunts FA Cup Semi-Final   St Neots Town Youth 4 Feeder FC 4 (3-2 After Penalties) Feeder took the lead mid-way through the first half, when a shot was deflected into the top corner after some excellent work from their central midfielder, but St Neots got back into the game when Billy Mobbs got above the Feeder keeper to head home the equaliser.

After the break the hosts had the better of the game and Mobbs put them in the lead when he side footed home, only for the visitors to level again shortly after. Jack Garwood thumped home a far post volley from a corner to put the hosts in front again and Mobbs then completed his hat-trick with a tap in after the keeper had blocked his initial effort. The home side looked likely to extend the lead, with the post and the visiting keeper preventing the Saints from going further ahead. However there was to be a dramatic finish as the Feeder centre forward pulled a goal back in the final minute, after an excellent run, & there was still time for the visitors to get the equaliser in the dying moments after a long range free kick was scrambled home.

In the resulting penalty shoot-out Charlie Robertson, Josh Jarvis & Owen Smith scored for the home side, while Ashley Brewer made three crucial saves to send the Saints through to the cup final.

These two mid-table sides slugged out a hard fought and competitive draw that could have gone either way. Just the one St Neots team change saw Ed Adjei preferred at full back for Jordy Nkinga as St Neots sought to emulate their 5-0 home thrashing of Hitchin in the Red Insure Cup back in October. However since then Hitchin have moved up nine places in the league table – now just in the top ten – and they looked a more confident and compact outfit. Ironically Alasan Ann who made thirteen appearances for St Neots in the first half of the season returned as a Hitchin player and he was in the thick of the action picking up a yellow card for a rash challenge that was only inches short of being a penalty and at the other end he almost won all three points for his side with a late thundering shot that Nathan Abbey was happy to turn over his cross bar. There was a quiet start to the match with both sides happy to play patiently and wait for openings before a Lewis Hilliard cross split the visiting defence but needed a far post touch and then after a good Hitchin build up Nathan Abbey was perfectly placed to save from Mitchell Bryant. After 18 minutes Matt Nolan got the ball in the Hitchin net after determined play by Hilliard but the Referee had spotted an off the ball infringement and the effort was ruled out. Hitchin then forged ahead two minutes

later when an attack down the right saw the ball moved inside to Bryant and he sent in a surprise shot on the turn from 25 yards that left Nathan Abbey motionless on his goal line. Hitchin then had a good spell of possession with Charlie Smith seeing a shot deflected for a corner and then curling in a free kick that led to Alasan Ann heading wide at the near post. However St Neots always looked lively on the break and they were rewarded four minutes before the break when Adjei broke up an attack and fed Jay Davies who cut in and unleashed a shot that gave Bermudian international goalkeeper Tahj Bell no chance.

The second half began untidily with both sides flexing their muscles and conceding a string of free kicks that saw a caution issued to either side. Stuart Pearson had the first real second half opening but he hooked his shot over the bar and gradually St Neots began

to dominate. They sent on Jordy Nkinga pushing Adjei forward on the left and his pace quickly created a couple of openings with Nolan putting the first cross wide and then just failing to get on a low cross in front of a gaping net. Then in the last fifteen minutes St Neots pushed forward in search of a winner with substitute Shane Tolley on alongside Nolan and he set up his strike partner with a sublime flick but off balance Nolan again shot wide. Chances became limited in the last ten minutes with both sides concentrating on not losing but that almost worked in Hitchin’s favour as a minute into add time a Callum Donnelly corner was not cleared very far and Alasan Ann produced a blockbusting volley that looked certain to clinch all three points but Nathan Abbey was able to react to turn the ball over his cross bar. Neither side deserved to lose and the bumper crowd of 464 must have gone home satisfied.

Maybe St Neots were due a below par performance and maybe it was affected by their lengthy midweek trip to Tiverton.

More substitutions by both sides did little to add any rhythm and then with three minutes left the only real quality play of the match produced St Neots second goal. A Hilliard shot was deflected for a corner which eluded the packed area but Hoyte retrieved the ball and his clever hard low cross was converted by Tolley. Not a pretty draw but both sides seemed happy with their point.

Towards the end of the first half both Matt Nolan and Shane Tolley were caught in fractional offside positions and then three minutes before the break Biggleswade went

ahead as Lee Smith split the St Neots back line with a perfectly weighted cross and at the far post Sam Reed crept in between Dean Cracknell and Ryan Frater to head the ball in off a post. St Neots responded from the restart with a great run by Lewis Hilliard but under pressure Matt Nolan at the near post could only flick the ball over the bar. Half time substitutions saw Ed Adjei replace the limping Dean Cracknell and Andrew Iwediuno on for Russell Short and the match came alive. In the first five minutes there was a goal from each side and another outstanding chance. St Neots levelled after just two minutes when Matt Nolan chasing a ball to the bye line was brought down by Ian Brown and a rather fortunate penalty awarded which Jay Davies confidently smashed into the roof of the net. However parity last just two minutes and then at the other end Peacock flicked on a low

throw at the near post and Sam Reed notched his second goal of the match aided by a defensive deflection. With momentum maintained a minute later the home side could have further extended their lead but the partially unsighted Nathan Abbey did well to punch a Peacock header away. Midway through the half play became scrappy but St Neots almost levelled when Ryan Frater rose to win an Arthur Lee free kick but Brown punched clear.

The pleasing thing for St Neots was that despite being unable to string two passes together at times during the game they persevered to show the character to keep going and snatch what in the end was a deserved point. The first half was almost a non-event. In that first 45 minutes neither keeper had a direct shot of any consequence to save as the match resembled a midfield game of chess. The home side played with just one man up front swamping the midfield area and the quality openings by either side were non existent. A strong breeze and a bobbly pitch made conditions difficult but any excuses offered would serve to mask what was a disappointing first half by both teams. Nat Peacock did create one good opening after ten minutes but the unmarked Craig Daniel usually so good in front of goal totally miss-kicked well wide. St Neots persisted in sending over high crosses easily fielded by home keeper Ian Brown and it was not until 27 minutes that the first real chance arrived created by Peacock but Ian Allinsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s run towards goal was blocked by Nathan Abbey.

GREENIES GREETINGS

Great Commitment From Everyone Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to Rowley Park, The Cozy Stadium, for today’s Calor League Premier Division fixture. Today we extend a very warm welcome to the Officials, Players and of course, the Supporters of Bideford Football Club and we hope you have an enjoyable stay with us up here in Cambridgeshire before embarking on a safe trip back down to North Devon later this evening. Since our last game here, which ended in a 1-1 draw with Hitchin Town, and once again seems an absolute age ago, the lads have played two matches in what has become a really busy month of March and we were due to complete the calendar month’s fixtures prior to today’s game on Wednesday evening with another gruelling midweek trek to the southwest with a visit to Frome Town in our final re-arranged fixture. The first of the two completed games was our Red Insure Cup Final First-Leg down at Tiverton Town. After setting off from the Cozy Stadium at 13:15, the team and it’s band of supporters arrived at the ground almost five hours later and then put in a very good shift on a bumpy surface and the

hard work resulted in us gaining a very credible 0-0 draw with our promotion- hopeful hosts. This sets up the Second–Leg on Tuesday 8th April here at the Cozy very nicely and we of course hope to put on a good show in front of a decent crowd and atmosphere. The trip ended with us returning to The Cozy at just gone 03:15, Wednesday morning so I’d just like to thank every single person who was there, be it officials, players or supporters, truly great commitment from everyone.

Last Saturday saw us make the thankfully, short trip over into Bedfordshire, as we headed down the A1 to take on our near neighbours Biggleswade Town and it turned out to be that man Shane Tolley, who seems to have perfected the knack of scoring at Langford Road, who rescued us the point with a late equaliser. This was of course after we went behind just before half time and Jay Davies had pulled us level shortly after the break, scoring from the penalty spot and Matty Nolan

08) Arsene Wenger (FRA) One of the most shrewd and tactically sound managers to grace the game, Arsene Wenger is best known for changing the “boring, boring Arsenal” into the team that play the best football in the country.

07) Helenio Herrera (ARG) Helenio Herrera is one of the most important, influential, and successful managers in football history. He pioneered the use of psychological motivating skills and ensured that all his players believed they were going to win.

This was never more evident than in the 2003/04 season, where he lead an Arsenal side containing the likes of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, and Dennis Bergkamp to an unbeaten season, the first of it’s kind in over a century.

It obviously worked, as Herrera picked up 16 major trophies in his time as a manager. With Atletico Madrid he won two league titles, adding another two to that tally with Barcelona later on. He also won two UEFA Cups with Barcelona and a Spanish Cup.

Despite being accused of lacking a “killer touch” at times, Wenger’s trophy cabinet isn’t exactly empty. He has won two French league titles, a French Cup, a Japanese league title, three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and four Charity Shields. He was also voted World Manager of the Year in 1998.

His most successful spell came with Inter Milan, where he won three league titles and two European Cups. He added an Italian Cup with AS Roma later on.

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

Jimmy Greaves THE GREATEST GOALSCORER EVER Born 20/02/1940

Jimmy Greaves was a player who struck fear into the English league, the Italian Serie A and the world. Greaves is famous for missing out on England’s World Cup winning final due to a leg injury, which resulted in his substitute, Geoff Hurst, playing a somewhat vital role in the game. No one would have thought him replaceable though. Greavsie was one the most legendary football players England has ever seen.

From East to West London and then to Italy

Born in East Ham in East London Greaves was a cockney through and through. Being born in 1940, the East end of London wasn’t the easiest place to be a baby. At school, Greaves found football provided the perfect escape. He was very talented at a very early age and it led to him being spotted by a London club on the other side of the city, Chelsea. Jimmy made his debut for Chelsea in 1957 at the tender age of 17. Within a couple of years of being at the club, he not only secured a concrete place in the first team but became the youngest ever Top Goalscorer, scoring the most goals in both the 1959 and 1961 seasons. Just before Jimmy celebrated his 21st birthday, he celebrated his

100th League goal: a record for a player of his age.

….and then finally back to East London

Although we think of it as usual now, in 1961 it wouldn’t have been that common for a foreign club to come asking for an English lad. But his reputation at Chelsea meant that the European giants, AC Milan, heard about Jimmy and he signed for them in 1961.

You can take the man out of the East end but you can’t take the East end out of the man. In 1970, when Jimmy was 30, he returned to his roots in East Ham by playing for his own team, West Ham United.

The East Ham boy found it hard to settle in Italy, although with 9 goals in 12 games you’d never have thought it. He decided to move back to the UK and it would have made him the first £100,000 player in Britain . . . but for one pound! The shrewd, clever and reputable Tottenham manager, Bill Nicholson, brought Jimmy back to London for a fee of £99,999, meaning that he didn’t have the pressure of being the first to cost a hundred grand. This would turn out to be a pretty smart move as the success Jimmy showed whilst with Spurs suggested a man without any pressure at all. To North London People knew Jimmy was good at scoring goals but no one on earth would have been able to predict just how good he would prove to be in the ten years he was with Tottenham Hotspur. When he finally left the club in 1970, Jimmy had notched up arguably the most impressive statistics any striker in the English game has ever had for one club. He played 379 games and scored 266 goals. He was unsurprisingly the League’s top goal scorer over four seasons in the top flight. All in all, Greaves would finish his career with the record that still stands, of being the top goal scorer in six seasons of competition.

He had always expressed a desire to play for the Hammers and, now at the latter stages of his career, he would do them the service. He scored twice on his debut against Manchester City and would proceed to enjoy 38 games for West Ham that season and score a pretty reasonable (for him) 13 goals. Jimmy’s days of glory might have been over but he remained a first team player and important goal scorer not only for West Ham but also for Brentwood Town, Chelmsford City and Barnet FC, playing well into his thirties. They were much smaller clubs but he proved he was no less of a player. For Barnet he scored around 25 goals but no one really counted. Greaves’ tally might not have beaten Bobby Charlton’s, who played many of his games alongside Jimmy, or that of the ultimate goal-poacher Gary Lineker, but his records are perhaps more impressive being the third highest scorer with 44 goals, because they all came at a much higher rate and in a shorter period of time than any of the others. He still holds the record for the most number of hat-tricks for England (which came to six).

Mike Kearns Welcome to the officials, Players and Supporters of Bideford for todays fixture. I hope you have a pleasant day with us. I missed our previous encounter but by all accounts it was a very close game with our opponents coming out the winners by the odd goal in five. Bideford have had an excellent season and have been there or there about in a play off position all season. A great turnaround from last seasons final position.

The last match I attended was the home fixture against Hitchin where we were very close to breaking the magic 500 attendance. I know that Hitchin had a reasonable amount of support but I thought that our following was very encouraging and I hope that today’s attendance is the same or better. It makes such a difference to us as a club for of course financial reasons but also for the players to play in front of a good crowd, the atmosphere is just great. Looking at our form since the New Year and I must say how well Gary,

I and im sure everyone cannot wait for the new season to start where I wont be surprised if we are looking down on most other teams. That’s not being big headed just a show of confidence I have in our management team and the players.

It is taking time because both Mark Davies (Blueprawn) and myself want perfection for our site and that is what you will get however long it takes. I can tell you one thing though Manchester City were voted to have the best web site in football well I think ours will be better.

As I have said before we will with your help give it a real go next season. So lets all do our bit and enjoy the ride. Our next home fixture will be the second leg of the Red Insure Cup final against Tiverton Town where it is very much a winner take all game as we drew away in the first leg some three weeks ago. I think that our supporters will show just what is achievable with us having by far our best gate of the season. Can we get say 600, I think we just might do that. So I will wait and see if my prediction is anywhere near that figure. We have been working very hard on improving our web site and will very soon be launching more exciting additions to what I believe is one of the very best web sites in football (and I mean football).

A bold statement you might say, well yes it is but we have looked at nearly every web site in football and those in Europe to see just what makes a great football web site.

Club History Founded in 1946, the club played three seasons in the Exeter & East Devon League before joining the Western League in 1949. Bideford had a request to be elected to the Second Division denied, and had to play in the Third Division instead. This was the only season the Western League ran a Third Division, and Bideford won it without losing a game. Two seasons later they also won Division Two, and so took their place in Division One.

Bideford AFC gained promotion from the Toolstation Western Premier League at the end of a fantastic 2009/10 season, in which they did the double winning the League and the Westinsure Devon St Lukes’ Bowl where they beat Exeter City 2-1 in the Final. Bideford AFC were promoted to the Evo-Stik Southern League South & West Division in May 2010, the first time they have played in the Southern League in 35 years. After finishing that first season in a credible 10th place, the 2011/12 season saw them crowned Champions by an impressive 11pt margin, gaining promotion for the first time in their history so the Southern League Premier Division.

The club spent three seasons at that level before the expense involved and increased travelling took its toll, and they had to drop down back to the Western League. With the subsequent abandonment of second and further replays, this record is likely to stand for a very long time. Two more Western League titles followed in the early 1980s.

In FA competitions, Bideford AFC’s record is quite impressive, reaching the First Round Proper of the FA Cup on four occasions, and reaching the Semi-Final of the FA Vase in 2003/04. In 2008/09 the FA Vase campaign saw Bideford reach the quarter-final stages, where they were knocked out by an impressive Lowestoft.

Who calls the shots?... Sean Joyce A former League professional, who played for Cambridge United, Doncaster Rovers, Exeter City; Torquay United and then Non-League with Elmore and Taunton Town. Sean took over as Bideford Manager, when he stepped up from Player when Dudley Barry and Brian Shannon Stepped down during the 1998/99 season. Bideford were at that time a struggling Western League Premier division side, and since then, Sean has taken the club from success to success, gaining Promotion to the Southern League South West Division one and then up to the Southern League Premier.

Rob Dray Assistant Manager Rob was formerly Manager of Bridgwater Town, and lives in the area where he runs his own catering business. Tom Kelly First Team Coach Tom is a former Bideford Player, who is also a former League professional. He was born in Bellshill in 1964 and Started his career with Gartcosh United going on to play for Hibernians; Partick Thistle; Queen of the South; Hartlepool United; Torquay United; York City; Exeter City; Torquay United; Weymouth; Teignmouth; Ilfracombe; Taunton Town; Bideford AFC; Bridgwater Town; Stoke Gabriel; and then Bovey Tracey where he was Player Manager. Tony Beal Physio Tony lives here in Bideford with his family, where he works as an engineer in South Molton. GOALKEEPERS Steve Oliver Steve lives in Bideford, and is now in his second spell with The Robins, after signing from Ilfracombe Town. Steve is an accountant and lives with his family in Bideford. Matt is the Club captain, who leads by example on the pitch, and has a massive engine, putting in a nonstop performance in every game he plays. Matt was a professional footballer with Torquay United gaining the nick name “Pitt Bull” for his energetic tackling, he made 239 appearances, and scored 10 goals, He also won promotion with them after they won the Second Division. He also played for Truro City before Joining the Robins. Matt is 31 years of age, and lives with his wife in Marldon, Paignton. He works with Learning difficulties patients. Matt has made over 190 appearances for the Robins, scoring over 30 goals in the process. Matt has won the St Luke’s Bowl three times, and also the Western League Premier Division as well as the Southern League Division One South and West. Last season Matt was the Bideford AFC Club Player of the Year.

There’s never a dull moment supporting your favourite team, the beautiful game has been kicking around for years but will always throw up some lunacy! Check this beauty out! Bernie Slaven’s canine quandary ”There was an explosion of green,” said David O’Leary, remembering the reaction to his winning penalty for the Republic of Ireland against Romania at the 1990 World Cup. It put them through to the quarterfinals, where they would meet Italy. “The biggest mistake was standing still. I nearly got killed by all my team-mates.” Only one of them might have meant to do any harm: the substitute Bernie Slaven, who had spent the whole of the tournament on the bench. “I basically trained for six weeks with a group of fringe players,” Slaven

told the Glasgow Evening Times in 2003. He was pleased to be there, but didn’t hold out much hope of playing. “We called ourselves the Muppets.” By the time Ireland reached the knockout stages, Slaven had had enough. He wanted to get home to his dogs. “I became a figure of fun when I called home on that trip,” he recalled. “While others were speaking to their wives, I would go on the phone and say: ‘Put the dog on.’” The Middlesbrough forward was taking his dog for a walk when he found out he’d been called up to Ireland’s World Cup squad,

and once left Ayresome Park at half-time to take the dog out, after being substituted. “I could see the floodlights and hear the crowd from where I was walking, which was surreal,” he said. Not quite as surreal as the picture that Tony Cascarino, Slaven’s World Cup room-mate, paints in his autobiography. “I’d be sitting in the bed alongside and Bernie would be howling like Lassie into the phone: ‘Woof, woof, aru, aru, woof!’ He’d be kissing the receiver and lavishing affection – ‘Hello, lovey dovey’ – on a dog! The first time it happened, I nearly wet myself.” “The reason was simple,” Slaven explained, trying to save everybody a change of underwear. “I got more sense out of her.” Unfortunately his canine chum couldn’t get her chops around the words “Brian Deane” or “Neville brothers mare” to warn Bernie off betting that Boro wouldn’t beat Manchester United at Old Trafford in December 1998.

Did Somebody Say Own Goal?

Back on to the unusual again and we travel to Scilly to spend some time in the Isles of Scilly Football League, which is officially the smallest football league in the world.

Our final bizarre world football story is a personal favorite of mine and one that comes from the Madagascan football league—another league that some you might not have spend a vast majority of time in, though I can’t for the life of me think why not. Pretty much, all you need to know is that AS Adema beat Stade Olympique de L’Emyrne 149-0 and they did it without scoring a single goal of their own.

The league features just two teams—Garrison Gunners and the Woolpack Wanderers—who play each other every week in the league to determine who will be the champion for that season. Played from mid-November to late-March, the two teams play each other 17 times over the course of a season, with the champion coming from a typical first-past-the-post system. But the pair still receive plenty of knockout action as well, with The Wholesalers Cup and the Foredeck Cup—which are both played over two legs—as well as a Charity Shield that customarily kicks off the action-packed season ahead.

The result stands as not only one of the most stupid protests ever made in world football, but also the largest defeat in the history of professional football.

The only time that the two teams don’t play each other in the league is when they meet in the Cup, which again, is only played between themselves.

In the second last week of the tournament, SOE had been held to a 2-2 draw by DSA where a controversial late penalty decision had done away with SOE’s 2-1 lead. The draw squandered any chance that SOE had to beat AS Adema in the championship race, so in their following game, they decided to protest the harsh decision by scoring own goals. Repeatedly. 149 of them.Spectators at the game say that SOE would kick the ball off and shoot it all the way back to their own goal, where their goalkeeper would watch it go in. Following the match, the Madagascan Football Federation suspended the SOE coach Zaka Be for three years and four of the team’s players until the end of the season. All the other players from both teams received an official warning for their involvement in the incident.

Information Addict Lee Kearns Put quite simply we are in a world where information is King. I freely admit I have an addiction to finding out about information that wouldn’t generally be part of your every day, normal conversation. discussed or expressed. People get fed up when I text one word answers but then they keep on texting me and I keep responding the same way. Text conversation, twitter conversation, facebook conversations all have their place and are all useful tools for communicating but we need to be careful that we don’t allow our Kids to become void of personality and charm. My wife thinks I am a wealth of pointless, meaningless dross (I have explained that you never know when you may need to drop into the conversation that there is a superman somewhere in every episode of Seinfeld or that Kangaroos can’t hop backwards) and to be truthful she may be right, but interestingly she will always insist on being on my team when it comes to a game of trivial pursuit. Unfortunately we live in a world where we have a fountain of knowledge readily available but we are consumed by non-descript fictional fantasy lives, where we can communicate with anyone in the world in real time without talking and without listening and where our kids will grow up without conversation and an understanding of the consequences of what they say will be lost to them and I for one believe, in the most part, the world is a poorer place for it. It’s not that I see social media and the modern Mobile phone as the enemy it’s just that it does take away a basic human attribute which is to talk, listen and to understand what is being

Wonderful non-league

grounds There are many great new stadiums in Non League football, ours is one of them. But what about those lovely old grounds with those beautiful old stands. We take a look at them up and down the country.

Great Yarmouth Town – Wellesley Recreation Ground (Eastern Counties League Division One) Wellesey Recreation Ground, Wellesey Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk NR30 1EY Without doubt the 120 year old grandstand at the Wellesey is the single most photographed ground in non-league history. It is understandable as everything about its construction is aesthetically pleasing. From the dog-tooth fascia board, turned roof supports, roof gable and pierced roof ends down to ornate dressing room window frames it is just a joy. The opposite side of the ground has a not unattractive run of covered benching. However it is the 1,000 seater stand, built in the summer of 1906, that is the ground’s pride and joy. It even manages to avert the eye from the ghastly all-weather athletics track that replaced a cinder track in the early 1990s. It was also during that time that the stand was closed for patronage under the Safety of Sports Ground Act due to the presence of large amounts of inflammable timber. However, the preservation order on the stand assures its survival for many future generations to enjoy.

Crook Town – Millfields (Northern League Division Two) Millfield, West Road, Crook, County Durham DL15 9PW A very famous club from the old amateur days, being five times winners of the F.A. Amateur Cup. The club is renowned throughout Europe and even played the mighty Barcelona no less than ten times between 1913 and 1922, losing only four times. So close were their ties with the Catalan club that they even borrowed Barca’s famous goalkeeper, Ricardo Zamora for one game. Crook also went on tour to Norway in 1963 and, famously, to India in 1976 when crowds in excess of 100,000 flocked to see the side from the Northern League. In 1898 the club left their Welfare Ground at Bankfoot having purchased a new site in West Road for the princely sum of £625. The ground at Millfield expanded rapidly and the original grandstand was replaced by the current 500 seater in 1925 at a cost of £1,300. The rest of the ground was steeply banked with ash to create a massive capacity. Millfield was packed for an Amateur Cup tie against Walton & Hersham in 1952 when the official record gate of 17,500 was set. Contemporary press reports put the real crowd as being in excess of 20,000 as entrance gates were barged down. In the late 1940s and fifties the ground never saw a match with a crowd of less than 4,000, remarkable for such a small town with a population then of 12,000! Although the crowds are long gone, Millfield remains a classic venue, albeit one under constant threat of redevelopment or relocation.

St Neots Town Youth & Saints Chairman getting some of the day job done, being with the family and doing all you can for the Club. With a very supportive wife, a daughter that is perhaps forced to like football (she would prefer to be shopping I am sure) and a son that is playing at a good standard for his years, I am allowed to commit seven days a week to youth football.

A week in the life of the Chairman of St Neots Town Youth & Saints Football Club... This is our first season as the new Youth & Saints following a merge with St Neots Town Youth and St Neots Town Saints and as you would expect we have been very busy. With the merge we have around three hundred children playing football. We now have our ‘Youth’ which are the Grassroots Team (of all abilities) and our ‘Saints’ which are our ‘Development’ squads, both playing now under the same banner ‘St Neots Town Youth & Saints FC’. It’s also pleasing that we have teams at every age group from 5 to 16 years and the under 21s with the under 18s hopefully coming across under our registrations next year. With support from Mike, Lee and Iain we continue to develop the club, whilst still pledging ‘sport for all’ and a ‘pathway for long term player development’ within St Neots Town. As youth Chairman the job is perhaps not advertised as a ‘juggler’ but its all part of the daily routine of

Typically the hands on part of the week, tends to be coaching the Under 13’s Development Team on a Monday and Thursday evening, coaching the Under 7’s Team on a Wednesday evening, managing the Under 7s Saturday Morning, officiating the Under 21’s on a Saturday afternoon and then Sunday its match day for the Saints Under 13’s. Between coaching, I meet new coaching staff with the Head Coaches, meet fundraisers to discuss events including a tournament planned for the end of season, talk to current coaching staff regarding any issues and if I get time I don’t mind helping out with a bit of white lining.

I enjoy the coaching and I continue to progress my qualifications, perhaps helping new coaches as a mentor and to provide the teams I coach with better skills. I am also blessed with a strong committee, each having particular roles, our Treasurer looks after the purse strings thankfully (it’s very tight this year with the investment in kits, registrations, insurances, pitch hire, etc), Vice Chair supports the drive and passion for the game, Child Welfare Officer, Secretaries, Procurement officer, Fundraising Team, Head Coaches and Physio. The Committee meet on a regular basis but during the week, as we are all voluntary the emails do not stop, and communication is prime for our success. As we move the Youth on, with apprenticeships now on offer, the U21’s playing UCL Division One and everyone with the aim to play for the Senior Team and beyond we feel we have the early foundations to make this club a success for the Town, the Club and the players for tomorrow.
