GUIDING EDUCATIONAL PRINCIPLES

ST. GEORGE’S SCHOOL

is a strong academic university preparatory institution with selective entrance standards. Offering a Boarding Program for Grades 8–12 and a Day Program for Kindergarten to Grade 12, St. George’s is committed to its mission of “Building Fine Young Men. One Boy At a Time.” The School encourages the pursuit of excellence in all endeavours, and is committed to the healthy growth of body, mind, and spirit. Character development, leadership, and service opportunities are integral to the School’s mission.

St. George’s School acknowledges that we are situated on the unceded traditional territory of the Musqueam First Nation.

Since the School’s founding in 1930, the concept of the “well-rounded boy” has been the defining characteristic of a St. George’s education. Mindful of their ethical, intellectual, physical, and social development, we educate and support boys to achieve fulfilling lives here and after graduation; to be lifelong learners; and to engage meaningfully with their communities.

Naturally this Annual Report will be read through the lens of the exciting realisation that the School’s generational efforts in constructing a brand new Senior School nears its thrilling conclusion. It’s an approaching moment of definition for St. George’s School, humbling to behold knowing it has been our extended community whose support has allowed this transformational work to occur. This is the outcome of the incredible contributions of many in our school community, over many years. Their audacious vision, dedicated commitment, and resilient determination has guided us through several significant challenges to arrive at this moment where the final stretch is in sight. Their selfless stewardship has brought our School to this moment of transformation. And alongside that I want to continue to emphasize that as we prepare to move into the new buildings and experience some exciting change, some critical fundamental aspects of our School will not change. This School remains one that is focused on its mission — a mission that acknowledges that every boy is wonderfully unique, and a desire that we support those same boys to become men who make a positive impact in the community they choose to serve. This call to service threads its way throughout the history of our School. The outcome of this thread of fundamental values is seen when we gather generations of our graduates together, sometimes in parts of the world far from Vancouver. They are different, of course they are often separated by decades. But at the same time, they are similar. They espouse the similar traits of service and brotherhood, and desire to commit meaningfully to their communities. Our Graduating Class of 2023 were incredibly successful in wonderfully animating the outcome of a school desiring that each boy understands and excels in his understood area of passion, and equally feels the responsibility to use that excellence for positive impact on others. And this now becomes our focus, to graduate young men who step into the world as attractively relevant, equipped with the skills and values that a modern, rapidly changing world needs from them. As you read this Annual Report, I hope you are able to see that we are a School that understands the need to change, innovate, and move forward, but equally, we know the importance of values and traditions that have held true for generations. MR. DAVID YOUNG HEAD OF SCHOOL

So many successes, great, and small, and so much continuing change — all under the confident leadership of our remarkable Head of School, Mr. David Young. There is everywhere a renewed sense of purpose, vitality, and commitment. The Grads of 2023 achieved a bumper crop of university acceptances from institutions around the world. We wish them all tremendous success. The Grads of 2024 are now walking the halls, set to make their own unique mark during their final year at Saints. The boys are thriving in an increasingly complex world. Our educators are motivated, engaged, and passionate about our mission. We have been honoured as one of the Top Employers in BC for the 12th straight year! This is a time of even greater ambition. This spring, we committed to an exciting new Ten-Year Strategic Plan — special thanks to Ms. Seonaid Charlesworth, Dr. Martha Piper, and Ms. Andrea Thomas Hill for all of their inspired leadership and support of Mr. Young with this important effort. Thanks as well to Mr. Mike Mackay for his dedicated leadership of Advancement, Mr. Nigel Kirkwood for his meticulous leadership of Finance, and Ms. Shanni Eckford, our tireless Vice Chair, for her leadership of Properties and Facilities. Topside, our dreams of new academic buildings, a dining hall, and the Matthews Quad have become a magnificent reality. This generational effort has been advanced by many past and present school leaders; board members and trustees; volunteers; and donors (hopefully including or soon-to-include YOU, Dear Reader)! In particular, the School is indebted for the years devoted to this task by Mr. Prentice Durbin, Mr. Paul Dunstan, Mr. Peeter Wesik, Mr. Robert Orr, and Mr. Paul Leslie — thank you! Thank you as well to the many hard-working members of our Foundation, SGPA, OBA, and Society Board, and in particular Ms. Christina Brown and Mr. Owen Cameron for their dynamic and creative leadership. Working together, you have created, sustained, and expanded a community that supports, enriches, and advances our boys. This is my final year as Society Board Chair. Serving in this role has been the honour of a lifetime. Thank you to all for your many kindnesses, generosity, and support. I wish all the very best to Ms. Shanni Eckford, my successor as Board Chair who will be exceptional. In the immortal words of Andy Bernard, in one of the last scenes of The Office, the beloved TV series: “I wish there was a way to know you were in the good old days before you actually left them.” Sine Timore Aut Favore

DEVELOPING CHARACTER OUTDOOR EDUCATION AT ST. GEORGE’S SCHOOL

2022-23 marked a full return to Outdoor Education programming at St. George’s School. We were so excited to see our students build a sense of adventure and community as they travelled all over this amazing province and explored its natural spaces. Students bonded over shared experiences, overcame shared challenges, and developed their teamwork and communication skills. Throughout this school year, students in Kindergarten–Grade 10 experienced Outdoor Education Trips building in difficulty and length to suit each age. Our Grade 10 Discovery Program was once again a huge success and the students became an incredible team on their 21-day final expedition. Students in Grades 11 and 12 had the opportunity to engage in leadership roles by joining trips with the younger students as Student Leaders. It was an amazing year, and all students should be proud of their accomplishments.

More than 90 years ago, we recognized the educational value of including a strong Athletics Program for boys at St. George’s School. Decades later, we offer a diverse array of competitive and recreational programs to challenge our boys athletically and socially. Our coaches work to ensure that positive character development is always integrated into each boy’s experience on and off the field, during practices, games, tournaments, and on trips and tours. The ‘pursuit of excellence’ is a key element in the structure of our Competitive Sport Programs, ensuring our athletes are prepared to continue their growth and development at the next level. Great memories, wonderful experiences, and strong relationships are expected outcomes from our co-curricular Athletics Program.

The Junior School offers the PHE and Athletics Programs. The PHE Program offers students the opportunity to experience a variety of sports and activities in a fun and safe way. The program is designed to enable all students to gain a better understanding of different sports and activities through skill-specific practices and games. Student engagement is always high as they are provided with time to learn or refine these specific sports skills. To further promote competition, boys are divided into four Wings (Clark, Fell, Mac, and Tupper) and take part in a very popular Wing Games Intramural Program on a weekly basis. In Gameplay, the students are taught how to play and are offered guidance on tactical knowledge that enhances their understanding. All elements of the program are designed to promote students’ health, well-being, and selfconfidence. The program also develops their team-building skills and grows their character. The Athletics Program also provides our students with an opportunity to participate in specific sports. At varying times during the year, these sports are available to our students before school, at lunchtime, or after school. The program builds on the foundational work of the PHE Program. The following sports are offered at the Junior School: soccer, cross country, swimming, volleyball, basketball, rugby, golf, track and field. The varying sports allow our students to continue developing individually, whilst also growing their team playing skills. Through a competitive and hard-working environment, our students enjoy taking part in all these opportunities and representing the School.

THE ARTS AND APPLIED DESIGN, SKILLS, AND TECHNOLOGY AT ST. GEORGE’S SCHOOL

NURTURING CREATIVITY

Whether it’s designing/building/lighting stage sets, acting, creating high-tech animation, painting, drawing, sculpting, or programming, St. George’s students love to explore and develop their talents. The choices at our School are unparalleled and include opportunities to act in semi-professional productions; play in one of ten major bands and ensembles; take a master class with renowned international artists and musicians; compete for one of the much-prized arts scholarships; or exhibit their work publicly. Students are also creatively engaged in applied design skills through business simulations and competitions, building robots, writing code, or crafting exquisite pieces in our woodshop.

PORTFOLIO DAY

ART PROGRAM AT THE

This is a special day for St. George’s students applying to art schools as representatives from top-end schools meet our students to provide one-on-one critiques of each artist’s work in preparation for their portfolio submission. As a result, five students from the Class of 2023 were accepted to art schools last year. Students were encouraged to consider the following when preparing to make a decision about studying art in a post-secondary institution: • • • • • •

Research the different schools and their programs, as not all schools offer the same programs. If they know the program interests them, research which schools have that program. If they are interested in a double major, determine which programs can be combined with art. Determine the portfolio requirements for their schools of interest. Determine other requirements needed. (Essays, letters, specialized portfolio challenges, etc.) Note the deadlines for Portfolio submissions.

The Applied Design, Skills, and Technology (ADST) Department engages students in the Design Thinking Process and uses it as a framework to stimulate creativity and problem solving skills. Whether it be in Woodworking, Computer Science, Business, Drafting, or even Robotics, students enrolled in the ADST elective courses embrace the opportunity to work on passion projects. In ADST courses, students are often faced with design challenges that require unique and creative ways to solve problems. Some students work alone or in team environments. Students who are organized in teams are intentionally taught how to work collaboratively in order to ensure the best use of each team member’s strengths.

Theatre Arts, as a part of Saints Arts, offers a wide array of performance, technical, analytical, and creative courses spanning both stage and screen. Theatre Arts courses encourage students to develop their awareness and use the elements of drama, technical theatre, film study, and creation to invent works that are related to their personal interests and experiences. In these courses, each student expereinces being a performer, audience, playwright, technician, designer, and director. Through the process of taking on roles, students develop and express empathy for people in a wide range of situations. They develop the ability to interpret and comment on a range of works and activities and evaluate their own and others’ creative work.

THEATRE ARTS

A REFUGE AND SANCTUARY FOR THOSE LONGING TO EXPLORE, CREATE, PERFORM, AND BELONG.

SENIOR SCHOOL SENIOR SCHOOL PRODUCTION OF THE WIZARD OF OZ: The Saints Players Theatre Company presented their production of The Wizard of Oz from October 26–October 29, 2023. The members of the cast, crew, and orchestra — led Mr. Wes Boise, Director, Mr. Rob Murray, Musical Director; Dr. Dean Markel, Musical Supervisor; and Mr. Marcus Stusek, Producer — worked tirelessly to put on this amazing musical. This production included 20 St. George’s student actors as well as one student from Lord Byng Secondary, four students from York House, nine students from Crofton House School; and one from Little Flower Academy. Additionally, 16 Junior School boys and girls were cast as munchkins. There were also 13 crew from Saints and one crew member from York House School. The show was a resounding success as the students took part in six sold out shows!

The Junior Saints Players Theatre Company presented Star Warts: The Umpire Strikes Back on February 9 & 10, 2023. Directed by Mr. Stephen Sarmento, this was the largest musical produced in the history of the Junior School with 76 students in Grades 4–7 from St. George’s School, five students from York House, and one student from University Hill. The show was a huge success with a sold-out run. On May 31, 2023, the Junior School proudly produced the Primary Musical Squirm!, starring 148 students in Kindergarten–Grade 3. Led by Ms. Teigan Paish an Ms. CJ Colville, this presentation provided many of your young students with the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience for the frist time!

GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP GLOBAL STEWARDSHIP AT ST. GEORGE’S SCHOOL

Service Learning continues to flourish under a mandate to give back and educate in meaningful ways through three areas: community engagement, philanthropy, and awareness campaigns. Students’ commitment to Service Learning and charitable endeavours are tracked during their time at St. George’s School. Students achieving 300 hours of volunteer service, with at least 100 hours taking place in their Grade 12 year, are honoured with a Level Five Service Award and submit a written piece documenting their experiences, with reflections on what their volunteer work has meant to them.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2022-23 Returning to ‘normal’ in Global Stewardship was a theme for our year, as students were once again energized to engage with the community. Keen to identify opportunities for students to volunteer, mentor, and make an impact, we reconnected with long-standing community partners, relationships that were paused during the pandemic, and created new partnerships with schools and organizations in the Lower Mainland. Global Stewardship encourages students and faculty to create an ethic of care within their everyday interactions with each other and with the world around them. We do this by providing educational opportunities to examine important topics such as climate change, food security, sustainability, land stewardship, poverty reduction and inequality, social justice, and reconciliation. The Grade 8 and 9 Experiential Education Workshops during Flex Days provided time for extended workshops and field trips, enabling students to learn from experts in the community and develop empathy and care for our neighbours. Many projects were launched by passionate students who wanted to make a difference in their communities. Humans of Saints is a storytelling project that invites us to learn more about our wonderful, diverse community. Saints Sprouts is our community garden project, where a team of students manage and maintain a number of productive garden beds and an indoor herb garden, providing delicious greens for our School Lunch Program. One of the major highlights of the year was the success of the annual Hamper Drive. After being forced to reevaluate the program during COVID-19, we built on what we learned about our recipient families’ preferences in order to better serve their needs. The entire St. George’s community rallied together to provide tremendous financial support for our greater community. More than 1000 individuals in over 260 families received grocery gift cards, staple pantry items, and care packages of cleaning and hygiene items to help provide for their needs during the holidays. We are looking forward to Hamper Drive 2023!

Our students are terrific! It’s little wonder when their parents are enthusiastic and creative community builders. The St. George’s Parents’ Association organizes many events, including a speaker series, social events for parents, a spectacular Saints Fair, used uniform sales, and a run/walk that gets everyone moving.

As an impressive byproduct of many SGPA events — with the Saints Fair holding a key position — substantial funds are raised to support the School. Some important examples of the impact of SGPA fundraising: SUPPORT FOR THE

OUR FACILITIES

A WORLD CLASS SCHOOL St. George’s School enjoys two beautiful and spacious campuses adjacent to the 2000 acres of Pacific Spirit Park in the Dunbar neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia. Our Campus Master Plan was developed to ensure our school community’s facility needs will be met for decades to come. The plan will be executed by way of a multi-phased fundraising campaign which began in 2014; phase I of the campaign was completed in 2016, surpassing the initial goal of $40 million. Already completed or underway are major restoration projects for our two heritage buildings and renovations of all classrooms at the Junior School, including the library. Most significantly, construction of the transformational new senior campus will be completed in 2024.
