From the principal Dear Parents,
dations. The school, in collaboration with parents, determine what can reasonably provided for the student.
Below is a list of frequently asked questions that have been submitted to me. I hope the answers will help you to better understand why we operate a certain way and make some of the decisions we do. Why do we start the school year earlier than the public schools? Answer: Our accrediting agency (TCCED) and the Superintendent of Catholic Schools require us to include 180 instructional days in our calendar. Teachers must have 10 professional development days in addition to this Archdiocesan and state regulation. HISD is required to have 170 instructional days in their school calendar. In previous years PK started later than the rest of the school. Why did that change? Answer: This was changed by our accrediting agency to include PK in the full 180 days of instruction. Why must our children take the standardized tests in the spring? Answer: Standardized testing is used to track the students’ progress and to assess the effectiveness of our curriculum. This is not the high stakes testing you hear about in public school that is tied to bonuses or salaries of teachers or administrators. Must all children take religion? Answer: Yes. Religion is a major subject and is required of all students attending St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School. Do you provide accommodations for students? Answer: A student must have diagnostic testing on file that recommends accommodations for a learning difference. This testing is valid for three years and is reviewed periodically to determine if there is still an educational need for the accommo-
Accommodations give an unfair advantage to other students. Answer: Accommodations are meant to level the playing field not give an unfair advantage to anyone. This is why we carefully look at individual situations to make sure they are needed. Who do I contact when my child is having difficulty? Answer: The first person to contact is always the teacher. He/ she is in the best position to answer your questions and address your concerns. If the situation goes unresolved, then make an appointment with the principal. Teachers are directly responsible to the principal not other faculty or staff members. May my 8th grader shadow at another school they are interested in attending for high school? Answer: Yes, if the school allows them to do so. Arrangements must be made with the high school they want to visit. Since we take our students on tours and invite other high schools to come and speak here, shadowing is marked as an unexcused absence. It is recommended that a student use our days off in the fall to schedule their visits. Second semester visits do count against the 8th grader as they pertain to their exemption status for finals. I realize there are more questions that parents are interested in getting answers to and I will continue to address them in future correspondence. Yours in Christ, Carolyn Sears M.Ed.
From the PTO President Dear Parents, I admit I googled “scripture about serving others” to see what the Bible had to say. There was mention of helping the poor, the sick, the needy, but there was nothing about the service involved with keeping school events, such as Book Fair, Breakfast With Santa, or Hospitality going the way St. Vincent’s does. And then I stumbled upon Galatians 6:9-10, which reads “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have the opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” As someone who spends a lot of time volunteering at our school (and enjoys every minute of it!), this passage really spoke to me. We are a strong community because of service serving each other, serving our children, serving our faculty and administration. And one of the best parts of serving this community is seeing the fruits of our labor unfold right before our eyes. Maybe you labeled books after Book Fair and later found one of those books in the hands of your child. Or, maybe you made muffins for the monthly teacher appreciation meal and then heard your child mention just how important their teacher felt

because of the efforts of the parents. Or maybe you decorated for the Auction and then saw the children having lunch on the Tiger Patio, or playing under the shade trees by the playground, or discovering something new with the microscopes and new lab equipment in the Science Lab. All of these enhancements were made possible by our own PTO. Just like the scripture says, we have so many opportunities to serve and to be a part of something that does good for this community. Parental involvement, in any capacity, is the critical component to the success of our PTO and our school. We are truly blessed with a fantastic faculty and administration, and when the parent community supports their efforts, it enriches our school beyond measure. Thank you all for everything you do! If you have any questions or want to get involved, please contact me at 713-3201077 or Khamhog@yahoo.com. Yours truly, Kelly Hogan PTO President 2015-16

SCHOOL BOARD NEWS The close of the first nine weeks of school also brings the wrap-up of this year’s successful Annual Fund Campaign. The School Board showed its commitment to quality and affordable Catholic education with 100% participation in the campaign as in previous years. We are in the process of completing the strategic plan, which outlines the goals for the Board and school. In accordance with our efforts to increase transparency, the board continues to post a copy of the strategic plan and minutes from monthly meetings. These documents can be found on Edline under the School Board contents folder. If you have an interest in serving on a School Board committee this year, please reach out to any member of the 2015-2016 School Board Executive Committee.

Wow! Our community of support is AMAZING. During our five-week campaign in September, 90% of our parents made a tax-deductible gift to show their support of our school and to help keep St. Vincent’s affordable and excellent. Thanks to the good work of our Annual Fund Chairs, Jeff and Anna Courville, and their team of Class Captains (see below), St. Vincent’s raised close to $400,000 in five weeks from nearly 300 families. This is the most successful Annual Fund in our five-year history. The secret to

Middle school students at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic School observed Pope Francis addressing a joint session of Congress in Washington, D.C. this week. The following story was reported by KPRC Houston, Channel 2 News. HOUSTON As Pope Francis addressed Congress in a joint session in Washington, D.C., there were 160 students who gathered to watch history in the making. Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students from St. Vincent De Paul Catholic School were in attendance. "The speech was incredible," said William Hearne, who is in the eighth grade.

During the hour long speech, Pope Francis urged leaders to lean toward compassion regarding immigration.
"I come from a background where immigration is a big part of my story. To me that is what makes this country unique," said Alisha Collaco, who is also an eighth-grader at St. Vincent De Paul. "I liked that he mentioned the Pope Francis touched on so- golden rule, and we should cial, political and humantreat others the way we rights issues. Many thought would want to be treated. Members of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School choir were invited to sing "O Canada" and "The Star Spangled Banner" to open the Houston Dynamo home game against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday, August 29. The participating choir members sang beautifully and did their part to support the home team in their 20 victory over the Whitecaps.

"It was nice that he mentioned Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Being African American myself, because of what he did I have the opportunity to go to a school like this now. I think, like the pope mentioned, dreams are the basis on which progression starts," said William.

SPORTS NEWS VOLLEYBALL With relentless focus and tireless effort, St Vincent de Paul volleyball players excelled on the court throughout the season. Their dominant win-loss record is only part of the story; during this impressive season, they showed humility as they rejoiced in their numerous victories, and grace in their rare defeats.

I appreciate all of the wonderful support of the staff and parents. I love these kids!!"
Coach Jena Edwards was new to SVdP this year, coming with an extensive coaching and volleyball background. She echoed Coach DeLeon's sentiment, saying, "This was my first year with the SVdP volleyball proThe sixth grade team, loaded with gram, and I've loved every minute of athleticism and volleyball experience it. These are amazing athletes! I'm despite the relative youth of its play- thrilled for them, and excited about ers, had zero losses, and they look to the future of SVdP sports." continue their unbeaten streak in the future. The seventh grade, working with more advanced rotations, only had one loss, but made up for it in dominating fashion the following week. This year's eighth grade team was undefeated in regular season play, and clinched a district championship as well. They took second place in the largest public and private middle school tournament in the state of Texas at the Bellaire Middle School tournament. As this article is being written, they are preparing for a deep run in the GHCAA playoffs to contend for a GHCAA Championship.
