he city looks forward to Victorious Festival in August but there are other festivals on the horizon. Boathouse 4, a relatively new attraction in the Dockyard has a festival from 5th - 7th August. Meanwhile, we are delighted to announce Portsmouth's first seafood festival, at The Camber Dock in Old Portsmouth on 3rd & 4th of September, brought to you by Portsmouth Fish Market, Southsea Lifestyle and our partners, a great opportunity to celebrate our city’s fishing community and its seafaring past. To mark the occasion of the festival, we are launching a pop-up radio station, presenting local people, features and music, which we will be taking on tour around the city. There will be more information in our August issue and on both our own and Strong Island’s social media, but if you, your business/ organisation would like to get involved, in either the radio, the seafood festival, or both, do get in touch via: john@southsealifestyle.com we’d love to hear from you. Finally, we hope you like this month’s cover, featuring one of our city’s great landmarks, HMS Warrior 1860. The ship is badly in need of some serious restoration, (see p.47) We hope you will show the old lady how much you care by sending HMS Warrior your coloured-in artwork. Have some fun in process and perhaps win a prize - further details on the inside back cover. Kevin John Dean

he way we eat and how we choose to fuel our bodies can greatly affect our moods, hormones and energy levels. these in turn determine our level of happiness and self-esteem. Good health is not simply being physically fit; it is also about what is inside. Modern life can be stressful. Many of us struggle to keep up with the fast pace and live with tiredness, stress and sleeping problems. For some, these progress and we’ve

cause a 20% drop in mental and physical energy. Ideally we should aim to drink around 1.5-2 litres of fluid per day. Our brain is around 60% fat (yes, really!), so in order to keep optimum brain function we need to be consuming good fats such as omegas 3 and 6. These can be found in oily fish, poultry, nuts, seeds and avocados. Certain foods may help

So what can you do to support good mental, as well as physical, health? A common problem that can lead to symptoms such as irritability, anxiety and tiredness, is imbalanced blood sugar levels. OVER A BREW…

I

t’s amazing where a conversation over a cup of coffee can take you; as I find myself sitting with the Buddhist teacher Noah Levine and discussing the idea that Buddha was in fact a revolutionary. Noah is known for his philosophical alignment with Buddhism, punk and counter-culture, and has helped clear the way for a new generation of mindful activists who feel disaffected with modern society and for whom meditating communities don’t align with their own alternative perspectives. It is refreshing to hear a man talking about concepts like compassion and forgiveness, alongside honesty about his troubled past filled with drugs and violence; and it is interesting to see how these experiences have contributed to his future path. I was lucky to have the opportunity to ask Noah a couple of questions regarding his perception of Buddhism.

Martyn: You suggest that contemporary schools of Buddhism are not necessarily teaching what Buddha originally intended; what do you mean by this? Noah: Interestingly, less than 10% of professed Buddhists meditate. Meditation is the core precept of Buddhist practice. Having studied for the last 28 years, reading a Noah Levine lot of original scriptures, I feel confident in understanding original Buddhism, and have found that much of what is presented as Buddhism, in different traditions like Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana and Zen – is not in line with Siddhartha’s message, the original teachings. I don’t feel frustrated about it. I think it makes sense. Just like in Christianity, you have what Jesus Christ actually said 12

and then you have reports of what Jesus is supposed to have said. It just gets so far away from the message of the founder. Martyn: So what does it mean to you, Noah? Noah: Buddha simply means awake or awakened, not worshiping a statue or needing paraphernalia, but to simply sit and be mindful. We often talk of relationships, but it is the very relationship with ourselves that is so defining. Meditation can transform lives, it probably saved mine. Martyn: With the rise of 24 hour culture and a social media lifestyle, what place does Buddhism hold now? Noah: Let’s get this straight: Buddha was a revolutionary! His teachings were both radical and against the stream of his culture. To be honest sitting still and practicing is a pain, but its benefits are amazing. It isn’t a quick fix, but a long journey. Martyn: How do you understand karma? Noah: Simplistically, karma means action. It is not really what happens to you, because stuff happens to everyone. It’s how we as individuals manage what has, or is happening. That’s our karma. Are we angry or has our ego been bruised? Are we acting with compassion toward others and importantly toward ourselves? Everything is transient - feelings, situations and even materialism, it is our relationship with these elements that sets us on our karmic path. I would like to thank Noah Levine for his time and teaching, and everyone at Southsea Sangha for making me feel so welcome. Information is available at www.southseasangha.com for anybody interested in meditation and mindfulness. For more information about Noah Levine, check out www.againstthestream.org

Le Corbusier-style LC1 Basculant Cowhide Sling Chair

A

touch of class this month, readers. A Le Corbusier-style LC1 Basculant Cowhide Sling Chair, no less, found at Roberts of Southsea on Castle Road, a fertile hunting ground for high quality furniture.

The architect, designer and writer known as Le Corbusier (which means crow-like one in French) was born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret in Switzerland in 1887. Although controversial and deemed a revolutionary at the time, he is widely considered a pioneer of modern architectural style and is famous for his theories on Modernism in architecture. He also cocreated Purism in art, with his friend, the painter, Amédée Ozenfant.

replaced the oak frame with chromed steel, and saddle leather was used instead of a light canvas seat and back. Surprisingly comfortable and ergonomic, thanks to the tiltable backrest and sloping cushion, the chair could be customized to the perfect angle for the sitter.

As a young man, he travelled widely across Europe gathering inspiration for his future designs, and worked alongside famous architects, such as Peter Behrens. On his return to Switzerland, he opened an architectural business with his cousin, and they worked together until 1940. His career spanned 50 years and his buildings are still standing in cities across Europe, India and America. After moving to Paris, he was appalled by the overcrowded living conditions of people in poverty. To alleviate the problem and improve social housing, he designed apartments that could be stacked on top of each other, even drawing up plans for an ideal city (Ville Contemporaine), that were sadly rejected by the French government. He was once quoted as saying that “chairs are architecture, sofas are bourgeois" and began experimenting with furniture design in 1928 with The LC1 ‘Basculant Chair’. This was based on an 18th Century wooden version used by the British army officers on campaign in India. The ‘Colonial Chair’ was originally foldable, so perfect for picnics. He 14

HOTLY TIPPED CREATIVE QUARTER

Portsmouth City Council has responded to the demand and provided a place where creatives can sell their artwork directly to customers, while also conserving a historic monument.

After a year of restoration, this historic monument is now home to some of Portsmouth’s most talented artists and designer-makers, with a deli-style eatery.

Hotwalls Studios is based on an innovative business model designed to support economic growth in the creative industries and secure the future of this important part of the city’s heritage.

Empty arches, once artillery barracks, have been converted into 13 working studios, using £1.75m from the government’s coastal communities fund, £100,000 of council funding and £40,000 from the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire.

Specialist conservation architects and an experienced construction company were appointed to undertake the painstaking work of transforming the historic monument into modern and functional spaces.

The transformation of the former barracks into the studios has brought new life to this part of the city's heritage, which is tipped to become highly soughtafter studio space.

Feeding all this creativity is The Canteen, a delistyle eatery offering wholesome, seasonal, locally sourced food.

Portsmouth has a thriving creative industry, with many successful established artists and companies, but there is a lack of affordable studio space.

Lucy and Bill Branson, the team from The Tenth Hole Tearooms, are behind the new venture. Lucy said, “We were blown away by the prestigious location

and unique opportunity at the Hotwalls.

opportunities to strengthen the city’s economy.”

“Having established ourselves in the city we were looking to expand, but with a new offer.

The site is fully accessible to the public. Studio opening times will vary, dependent on the working hours of artists and designer-makers in residence.

“We’ll be serving artisan sandwiches and freshly baked pastries, with great coffee and fresh juices.” The Canteen will serve food to eat in the unique surroundings that this historic monument offers, including the stunning waterfront deck, along with a take away option.

The Canteen is open 8am-5pm all year round, staying open until 9pm from May to September for wine, craft beer and sharing platters.

A spokesperson for the council said, “This has been an incredibly exciting project and the transformation of empty arches into functional and attractive studio spaces is remarkable. “With all the studios occupied we can look forward to the artists and designer-makers building a creative community, alongside the additional attraction of The Canteen. “The project has given a new lease of life to this incredible heritage site, while helping the city’s creative industries and providing new jobs and business

SMARTIE’S TOP TIPS

our garden is like an intimate conversation between close and special friends - you have the choice to simply observe or actively take part in influencing its shape, tone and colour. Over time a maturing approach allows you to objectively re-evaluate, and in a relaxed manner, make any necessary changes to further enjoy your garden space. Perhaps the following suggestions are what your garden needs to hear, in order to help influence the potential beauty of this intimate relationship with nature. Is there enough planting? Have shrubs been planted too close to the lawn or path so that they need constant pruning? Are the path and paved areas even and easy to walk along without tripping? Is there enough colour, and does it

18

complement and not jar or clash? Is there bare earth in the borders waiting for weed seeds to germinate? Does your lawn need re-shaping, enlarging or reducing to allow deeper borders for more plants? Have you considered planting a tree or a specialist shrub appropriate for your garden? Always start with the best garden tools you can afford. Essentially, a sharp hoe, a border fork and a border spade for removing the roots of weeds. This is also an opportunity to converse with your immediate neighbours, possibly making peace with them first, so you can perhaps share tools and any garden knowledge gained over a friendly hot mug of your finest conversational tea. Enjoy your garden! Smartie, the foreman, signing off.

PHOTOGRAPHY WALKSHOPS

I

Paul Gonella, Strong Island Media

t is hard to believe, but this June saw the first anniversary of Photography Walkshops - Strong Island's community walks for photographers of all ages and abilities, which started with a walkshop in Old Portsmouth. Strong Island Media have been running photography workshops for many years, but always in partnership with other arts organisations, schools and museums, most of which were outside Portsmouth. They thought it was time to start their own photography workshops at their favourite places in and around Portsmouth, combining practical learning about many different photography techniques and skills, along with exploring inspiring local locations.

Sarah Rivas Shown are some photos from the many different photographers that have come along on walkshops in the last year, on the 26 different walkshops both in Portsmouth and other places such as Bosham, East Head, Emsworth, Lee-on-Solent, Portchester, etc. Visit the website to find out more and also see the upcoming summer photography walkshop dates shown below.

IT’S A HOME, NOT A DEAL

H

Neil Maxwell

ow much should you spend on refurbishing that kitchen or bathroom in your home? What is too much and what is too little? The price tag for each side of the equation is obviously going to be dictated by your budget and perhaps by how long you plan to stay in the property.

The quality and cost of the fittings obviously add to the saleability, but not necessarily the value. It is not a given that two similar houses next door to each other, House A with a hundred thousand pound kitchen and House B with a five thousand pound kitchen, that House A will be worth a hundred thousand pounds more than its neighbour. I was asked to value a house in precisely this situation when the market was really struggling, and having recently sold the house next door. The homeowners could not understand why my valuation figure was similar to the property next door, given the value of the luxury kitchen that they had fitted (which had a six figure price label). As the discussion evolved, the owners promptly pulled out the clever ironing board attachment discreetly hidden within a kitchen cabinet to demonstrate why their house was worth so much

more than the house next door. It seemed a slightly surreal moment, and after a moment of silence we all started laughing, but it serves to highlight the difference between spending money on a house because it’s your home and wanting to enjoy the fixtures and fittings, including the designer kitchen and bathroom for years to come, compared to a property that may be a short term stepping stone to the next property which perhaps you don’t wish to expend large amounts of money upon. Doubtless, if both properties had been on the market at the same time the more expensive kitchen would have helped sell that particular house that much quicker. Our advice would be, with a limited budget to spend, get the basic layout right. Don’t be afraid to spend money altering the structure if required, perhaps giving you a more practical kitchen or kitchen/breakfast room; this will add value. Work tops and door fronts can always be changed if you have a good quality kitchen carcass. As a rule of thumb we estimate that your spend on the kitchen and bathroom should be between 5-10% of the property value, but there are no hard and fast rules to this.

FESTIVAL HAIR Edward Chase

a top knot or plait when raining, once dry undo your style for waves and texture again.

PRE FESTIVAL As your hair is about to take a

DAY THREE Hair hangover! The best thing to do

battering give it some TLC with a deep conditioning treatment. This will inject some moisture and will also help keep your hair smoother whilst away.

DAY ONE It’s all about clean hair! Save yourself some time by washing your hair the night before, and whilst damp loosely plait and leave to dry naturally. In the morning undo the plaits, separate with your fingers and don't overload with products (this will make it greasy quicker) For textured waves, spritz on some salt spray and leave to dry naturally or defuse.

DAY TWO Hair starts to get greasy and the shower queues are endless. Don't despair, dry shampoo was made for festivals; a quick spritz and massage-in will freshen up your hair, minimising the amount of oil on your scalp and giving you added volume too! Brushing your hair will help remove some of the dirt collected during the day. Use a tangle-teezer as they are much gentler and won’t cause any damage. If you have a fringe, lather some shampoo into it and use a bottle of water to rinse. Velcro roller it whilst you're getting ready to give it shape, or try a scalp plait across your hairline. Use the weather to your advantage: wear hair in

28

is get it out of your face. There are several ways to style which keep it under control: plaits, a simple ponytail, messy bun or a loose fishtail will always look effortless. Don’t worry about keeping it neat; the festival vibe is all about being casual. Short hair? Wear a hat to cover greasy, dull hair and protect you from the elements (you’ll also be protected from any unflattering images that appear online later!)

ACCESSORIZE Get back to nature as flowers add instant hippy chic. Whether you go for a floral halo or wild flowers intertwined into a plait, make sure you include some flower power! Acting as a focal point they'll draw attention away from hair that's starting to look dishevelled. Feathers are also very popular at the moment!

THE HEADLINE LOOK Go all out and add glitter to your parting/hairline! To create glitter roots, section your hair into small, messy buns, mix glitter and clear extrastrong hair gel in a bowl and use a small brush to paint directly on your roots. After the festival, invest in a good hair mask and relax – you and your hair deserve it!

WILD THYME, I THINK I LOVE YOU

S

John Worsey

itting in the juice bar, co-director Kelly Kemp reflects on the evolution of Wild Thyme Wholefoods. It is a little over one year since this unique shop opened its doors on Palmerston Road.

“At the start,” Kelly recalls, “Our vision was half shop, half takeaway. At first, people came in to get their organic veg. But now, we offer many products that are so important to people, but so difficult to get anywhere else. Household goods, beauty care, sports nutrition - there are lots of things you can buy vegan elsewhere, but they might be full of toxins, or not organic, or not natural.”

I have to admit, when I first stepped inside Wild Thyme I was taken aback by the incredible variety on display. On reflection, I’m not sure what I was expecting - aisles of Quorn, perhaps. But here are soya protein supplements for body builders, gluten free homemade cakes, aromatic bath oils… all totally natural, mostly organic, and processed as little as possible. Kelly has seen plenty of customers like me go wide-eyed at the possibilities. “People buy here for all kinds of different reasons. They might be really into juicing, they might follow a paleo diet - based on what early humans may have eaten -

Wild Thyme is a worker’s co-op, owned and controlled by seven directors. It runs on a not-forprofit basis, with workers having equal pay and status. Although the busy shop has a handful of part-time support staff, if you pop in to fill up a basket you’ll probably find the juicer, shelf stacker and till operator are all directors of the business and eager to help you get the best from your trip. Kelly is full of praise for the business model. “The level of engagement you get from people who belong to a co-op is completely different from that of a person who is paid to show up. We agree every decision we make. And everyone shares a passion for what we do.”

Kelly, Mario, Fran and Pip

they might just be trying to get a bit healthier… It’s great to see the journey people go on when they first come in just to get a few things and then, all of a sudden, they’re in every day.” I ask her about her own journey to a healthier lifestyle. She remembers initially becoming a “junk food vegan”, explaining, “I wanted all the stuff I was into already, but vegan versions. But when you become vegan, your perception changes too. You start to think more, not just about eating animal products but also about all the other things you are putting into your body. Eating healthy, wholesome food makes me feel better mentally and physically.” Kelly’s journey to become a director of Wild Thyme is equally thought provoking. “I’m a qualified business change manager, specialising in large IT integration projects. But I was drawn away from the corporate world by a much more mutually-run model of business.”

Most, but not all, of Wild Thyme’s directors follow a plant-based diet. One thing they all share is a commitment to careful sourcing. “We like to source locally where we can. It’s partly about ingredients - for example, we don’t want to fill the shop with sugary products. It’s also about ethics. If something is fair trade, or sustainable, or promotes healthy values, that is a priority for us.” So shopping at Wild Thyme is more than an opportunity to get healthier. It’s a way to support ethical business and local enterprise. And it’s your chance to eat cake guilt-free. What’s not to love?

HEAVEN’S LIGHT OUR GUIDE: A LIGHTNING TOUR OF PORTSMOUTH’S WRITING BOOM William Sutton

“I

didn’t know there were so many writers in Portsmouth,” said a Blackwell’s reader, as she queued to have Bodies of Water signed by VH Leslie. Victoria’s novel straddles contemporary and Victorian London with touches of fantasy and horror.

“Portsmouth ain’t literate.” So everyone says. When I moved here, I believed them. Yet Tongues ’n’ Grooves popular poetry nights suggested otherwise. Likewise, Write-Invite story nights at Rosie’s Vineyard. Portsmouth Bookfest is flourishing. Writers with Portsmouth connections, like Michelle Magorian, draw crowds; Neil Gaiman filled the Guildhall, signing books till 2am. Portsmouth Writers’ Hub was relaunched by literary dynamo Tessa Ditner. Meetings at Café Parisien (last Thursday of every month) welcomes newcomers alongside established novelists, poets and playwrights for workshops, readings and socials. Zella Compton’s play How to be a Girl! lit up the New Theatre Royal’s main house with provocative debate. Maggie Sawkins’ show Diving into the Wreck presents an insight into addiction; her poignant Zones of Avoidance won the Ted 34

Hughes Award for new poetry. Young adult writers include Tom Harris (The Amber Room) and Dee Kirkby (the Portal series). Christine Lawrence’s novel Caught in the Web evokes the world of 1970s mental health care. Archivist John Sadden wrote the wonderful Pompey historical novel Mudlark. Literary lion, Matt Wingett rediscovers local histories, from Recollections of John Pounds to Lake Allen’s History of Portsmouth; Matt writes plays, novels and non-fiction such as Conan Doyle and the Mysterious World of Light. Don’t forget crime writers, like Graham Hurley and Pauline Rowson. Visit Iceland with Quentin Bates’ captivating Sergeant Gunnhildur novels. JS Law’s submarine thriller Tenacity is “addictively readable”, says Patricia Cornwell. Pete Adams’ crime capers Kind Hearts and Martinets have leapt to mainstream success. Diana Bretherick’s criminological background gives her Turin chillers a murderous edge. My Lawless mysteries explore Victorian London’s

darker side. Christopher Berry-Dee is king of true crime. Cathy Wilson’s Escape from Evil reveals a serial killer’s world.

Opportunities keep springing up. News website Star and Crescent presents hyper-local tales and national scoops. Front Room: Words at Aurora Café (first Thursday of the month) showcases poets such as Sam Cox and Stella Bahin. Collections like This Island City and Portsmouth Fairy Tales [for Grown-Ups] showcase local talent. Watch out for workshops (eg Voices from the King’s, and Murder at the Theatre), performances (Day of the Dead) and book launches. Portsmouth’s literary scene is flourishing. And if I’ve left you out, come and meet the Writers’ Hub.

It’s an odd film to place. It’s comic tone is disrupted with unexpected shock moments and slightly tacky Hollywood party gimmicks.

The Nice Guys made me laugh. Not too sure about Russell Crowe’s acting ability, but he does provide a ‘Bud’ Abbott comic foil to Gosling’s Lou Costelloand he can smash a baddies face in really well and of course they all deserved it.

It is full of seventies film and political references and jokes, but it's main comic thrust is aimed at the pre- p.c (political correctness not personal computer) world. It is a rough and tumble environment where the ‘isms’ and ‘ologies’ which have become

NEW SHOW AT KINGS SHIP Hand Pulled Haiku: Screen prints by Christian Bennet 1-29 July The Kings Ship Tattoo Studio opened its new gallery space last month and this is its second show. See screen prints by local illustrator, designer and printmaker Christian Bennett. The first exhibition took inspiration from oriental design, and this one follows suit; Bennett’s work is inspired by 17th century Japanese haiku master Matsuo Basho. You might see more works in this genre at the annual Portsmouth Tattoo Convention 2016 (31 July) at the Guildhall.
