e regret to announce The Camber Seafood Festival has been cancelled. Despite enormous support from the fishing community, businesses and residents, our plans were sunk without trace by unforeseen circumstances. However, I’m pleased to report the plans for the Seafood Festival 2017 are already underway.

On a brighter note, we've just hosted a ‘pop up’ radio station, involving people from across the city of all ages, playing their music, talking about their lives, the arts, culture and the challenges we face in our community. As with the magazine, everything we have tried to do, (including the seafood festival) has been done from our own resources, with no external funding, simply because we believe in creating a better, more cohesive society. Sorry if this sounds a bit grandiose, but the sentiments are sincere, and if they chime with you, get in touch and lets talk about how we might work together. This issue carries several inspiring stories of community action: Our cover story - an update on the work by Canoe Lake Leisure to make tennis accessible for all, (see p.6-7), Martyn Knight’s interview with the Portsmouth charity, Don’t Hate, Donate, (p.10) and a thought provoking article by seventeen year old Beatrix Bee about remaining European despite Brexit (p.24). Finally, our city is propelled by its entrepreneurs, so do read John Worsey’s article about loving your own business (p.16) If your business needs some loving promotion, again, get in touch. Together, we can achieve great things. Kevin John Dean

A QUIET REVOLUTION Kevin Dean
Earlier this year, Southsea Lifestyle published an interview with John Cooke, chief executive officer of Canoe Lake Leisure. After the enterprise's first fully operational summer, we asked John to bring us up to date with developments. Sitting in the company’s busy Greens Café, I asked John to remind us of what Canoe Lake Leisure’s overall aims are, or, using business speak, its mission statement. “Quite simply, to provide high quality leisure and sports facilities, (particularly tennis), for the community”, said John. Looking out of the cafe windows, it was obvious the artificial grass tennis courts had become very popular, but I’d also noticed the grass courts were being played upon too. “Yes, the Victorian grass courts have now been restored and to Lawn Tennis Association standards, with the help of Neil Stubley, head groundsman at Wimbledon, using lasers and specialist compacting machines to ensure the ground is perfectly level. The grass courts will close at the end of September, until April, but the four floodlit artificial grass courts and two hard courts remain open all year.”
The grass courts prior to re-seeding. Photo: SkyPixel.Solutions david evans
“Next year we are planning a Futures tournament,” explained John, featuring players who are ranked 200 - 300 in the world, “It will be either pre or post-Wimbledon and the public can still use the same courts that the pro tennis players use. Tennis is often seen as quite an elitist sport, but we want to be totally inclusive and have tried to make it as affordable as possible from £4 an hour (per court) for under 18s and
On arriving at Canoe Lake I met John directing a builder’s lorry onto the site of the new pavilion. “It’s going to be a fantastic provision, a very contemporary design and again, apart from being a tennis pavilion, it will have multiple uses and be open for the community to use, from yoga classes, book clubs to personal training. On the first floor there will also be a garden terrace and coffee bar, so we can also host birthday parties and other celebrations - we hope to be ready from spring onwards next year,” said John. The company has also been building links with
local schools and John is particularly proud of the pupils with severe learning difficulties, who have been playing tennis, or gaining work experience in the cafe. There was one question I was longing to ask, how was all the new infrastructure and staff wages (at least 20 people are employed by the company) being paid for?.”We don’t receive funding from the PCC or the taxpayer. The funding for the entire enterprise is completely philanthropic.” Leaving the café, walking past the sunlit tennis courts, I began to think about another visionary sporting facility on the other side of the island... Ben Ainslie's Land Rover BAR, which naturally commands attention and publicity, while Canoe Lake Leisure is equally ambitious and revolutionary yet goes almost unnoticed, but then that’s just the way Canoe Lake Leisure prefer it.

students and £6 per hour (per court) for adults, or if people become members (£50 under 18s and students and £120 adults), they can book a court on-line and use the facilities more or less whenever they like.”

FERMENTING FOR HEALTH Tara Knight
I
n his book The Art of Fermentation, Sandor Katz attests every human society on earth has fermented foods in their diet. This long cultural history seems to be driven by both health and necessity, as lactic acid fermentation is an efficient way of preserving food.
In the west we are rediscovering their benefits and as such, fermented, probiotic rich foods are having a revival. I am excited to see foods like kimchi and sauerkraut being featured locally on menus and in independent shops.
Familiar foods like bread, beer, yoghurt, cured meats and cheeses, all undergo fermentation on their route to deliciousness. Other fermented produce, such as sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi, and the drink kombucha (fermented tea) are now more commonplace. The fermentation process causes the growth of bacteria, and as lactic acid is produced, food is transformed from the usual and mundane to mouthpuckeringly sour and enlivening. Beneficial bacteria (such as Lactobacilli) thrive in the fermenting environment, the pH level of which is similar to our 12
own stomachs; by eating fermented foods we can maintain good levels of friendly bacteria in our intestinal tract. A myriad of research demonstrates that an ideal balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut forms the foundation for physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. A century ago Eli Metchnikoff, the Nobel peace prize winner was the first to suggest that consuming lactic acid, producing live organisms, maintained the vitality of the large intestine which could lead to a longer and healthier life. Indeed the term “probiotic” used to refer to nutritional live microbial supplements (beneficial bacteria) literally means “for life.” The deemed health benefits of good levels of beneficial bacteria are numerous; they help keep unfriendly bacteria at bay which can keep toxicity levels down and they are indicated to assist with metabolism and immune function. Antibiotics, stress, illness and diet can all deplete levels of beneficial bacteria, and fermented foods are a good source of beneficial bacteria, which can help replenish. Wendy Budd of Budd’s herbal apothecary in Albert road has been brewing her delicious Kombucha for clients for over 15 years and as people become more interested in alternative methods to improve their wellbeing, she has seen it become very popular, so much so, that she is in the process of getting it licenced. Thankfully I see this as more than a passing fad; our worldwide ancestors, after all, have promoted the health benefits of fermented foods for many years.

A LABOUR OF LOVE John Worsey
I
’ve spoken to some diverse entrepreneurs this year. From fitness to fashion to food, they all have one thing in common. When they talk to me about their business, their eyes light up like lovers’. This shouldn’t come as a surprise. A big reason cited by people who quit their day job to pursue the dream of running their own business is a desire to “do what I love.”
Yet it takes a lot to do well in business. Vision, commercial savvy and passion for what you do are all essential. But none of these things make success easy. As a start-up, the odds are rarely in your favour. It’s a huge challenge to simultaneously pay down your monthly costs, find ways to fund your growth, and keep enough in the bank to pay yourself at the end of another month of 18-hour days and 7-day weeks. The lows can be crushing. After all, you put your heart and soul into your business. It’s all personal. The flames of passion can sputter and die. The rewards of remaining faithful to your dream through the rough times can be extraordinary. Watching your business take its first uneasy steps into unaided profit, your heart swells with pride. Hearing glowing feedback from happy customers, you beam from ear to ear. Winning a new contract, you break spontaneously into song. Even as the driver asks you to stop that tuneless racket or get off his bus, you can’t help but grin. I think there’s a certain kind of love you need to 16
succeed in business. Let’s call it true love. A love that’s deeper, stronger, more complete than you’ve felt before. A love that fills the gaps in you. A love that glimmers even in the darkest places, and stays true through the most testing of times. The journey you go on as you make a success of your business is much like the journey of a marriage. Along the way, you realise that a true and meaningful relationship has sharper corners than any fairytale romance - but it is so much more magical, too. I am lucky enough to be married to someone who helps me to find the best in myself. For the past couple of years, I have also had the privilege of supporting her on her own journey of business growth - from conception to awardwinning reality. At both the peaks and the troughs it sometimes feels as if we have given birth to an unruly baby. But the love we feel for this fledgling business is enough to see us through every long day, late night and early morning. I think that’s because the business is so much a part of her. How could I not love it? As the days grow darker and the year sheds its last remaining days, you may soon find yourself contemplating a change. Perhaps you feel the urge to set up a business venture of your own. Ask yourself this: are you simply passionate about your idea, or do you truly love it? To put it another way, will you stick by it for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health? If your love is true, you’d better put a ring on that idea before it gets away.

BACK TO SCHOOL MADE EASIER Jane Prescott, Headmistress, Portsmouth High School
D
uring the school summer holiday, children get the chance to relax and have a break from the routines that exist during the term time. However, at some point, the vacation has to end and there is a return to the orderliness of school life. Even if your child is not changing schools there is much that is new at the start of the school year. Unfamiliar teachers, classrooms and even schoolmates may mean that adjusting to the regularity of school takes time. To give your child the best start, preparation before the big return day is needed. Getting back into a sleep routine is essential to cope with a whole day in school. Whatever your age, having enough quality slumber hours is important, but so is going to bed at a time which gives sufficient hours of rest. Getting up in the morning with time for breakfast and gathering all equipment needed for school saves rushing too much and arriving at school tired and unprepared. Making sure ahead of the first morning that shoes still fit and the uniform has been purchased also ensures for a smooth first morning. Children seem to go through a growth spurt over the holidays and it is surprising that what fitted them in July no longer is the right size in September. As children move through school, their needs vary as to what is required, so check if there are any new additional items. Depending on the age of your child talking about what may be new and unfamiliar helps prepare them for the unknown. Small children in
20
particular respond well if they are talked through adjusting to a new part of the school or teacher. Older children perhaps need guidance on preparing for higher level study and how they are going to organise their work. Throughout the holidays, try to encourage regular reading and some writing to keep skills learned in school active. Using summer blogs is one way to develop this interest. Whilst some children are avid readers, some are less keen and taking them to the library and allowing them a choice of book, which very well may not be fiction, may entice them to read more. Whilst writing postcards may be old fashioned, sending an email or helping children use social media to communicate with relatives such as grandparents is a fun way of practising writing. There are many writing and creative competitions available to a whole range of ages which provides a focus for activity. Whatever the preparation before the return to school some children find it hard to adjust to the new routine. In those early days, as a parent, it is best to provide a listening ear to their worries as they get used to an unfamiliar setting. However, if the child sees you becoming upset then this will not help them settle. Do mention your concerns to the school who will have a strong pastoral system to help with the minor niggles that go with a new academic year.

HOW TO REMAIN EUROPEAN
A
Beatrix Bee
s the first wave of repercussions following Brexit are starting to be felt across Britain and, indeed, the rest of the world, many Remainers and even Regrexiters are frantically searching for some sort of way out (or way back in, more accurately) from this increasingly noticeable societal change.
Now, I’m not going to say that I have the perfect solution, but I do have one which is not far off; I propose that we all learn another European language. My reasoning is that not only can it do wonders for our brains (studies have shown that bilingualism can offset certain types of dementia by over four years, for example), our CVs (which equals £££), and our love lives (the classic ‘voulez-vous couchez avec moi ce soir’ etc., etc.) but it also provides a prime opportunity to open up discussion with our formerly fellow EU buddies - thus hopefully soothing somewhat awkward international relations - and gives us the ability to connect with a completely different culture, which is just plain fascinating on its own.
ideal location in which to initiate a quest towards European multilingualism. As one of the most densely populated cities on the continent and as a hugely popular tourist destination, Portsmouth is filled to the brim with all sorts of language and culture, and with people willing to impart knowledge of their mother tongue, especially around this time of year when hundreds flock to Portsmouth to attend one of the many English summer courses available. Even just walking down the typical street and noticing the vast array of foreign shops and cafes can

FOUR STUDY HABITS FOR THE NEW ACADEMIC YEAR
t’s back to business after the freedom and fun of the summer holidays. Let’s hope our children will have the initial excitement and enthusiasm for a new year motivating them through the first half term. Forming a few good habits early can help them when facing new challenges later.
messages, gaming or TV. x Study Space - create a study area away from above distractions, ideally a quiet, well lit area, having materials and equipment to hand including spare reading glasses if needed.
Effective study skills can often make good students into great students and so here are 4 great study habits to help your child get the most out of their learning this year.
u Study Planner - schools let children know the topics they will be studying nowadays. A long term plan of the year ahead helps to focus their learning and avoid last minute cramming before exams. v Study Schedule - sticking to regular homework sessions on a timetable will make life easier as it becomes part of the daily routine. A calendar and a weekly plan leading up to due dates will give everyone a clear view and help in allocating time to getting things done. w Study Time - designate a ‘communication blackout hour’ or until homework is done, no phones,
We don’t think that parents should have to do all the work, so this kind of support for children is a good way to help them take responsibility. Generally, the rule of thumb is: if you are working harder on their homework than they are, it is time to back off! A happy new academic year to you and your family! www. ilovetolearn.co.uk 023 93 968626

REALITY VERSUS VIRTUAL SOLICITORS Neil Maxwell
A
s I waded through a heaving mass of ‘Dear Homeowner’ letters in one of our empty properties recently, I came across a card from a firm of solicitors advertising their services, this resonated with me on my return to the office, where I was presented with a complex legal issue caused by a call centre based firm of solicitors who seemed to have no knowledge of anywhere beyond the route to their refreshment facilities.
It served as a reminder of how whilst the internet is fantastic for finding that unique retail product you can’t find locally, using a solicitor based on an industrial park in Staines Birmingham or Manchester with Team Z as your contact point for the sake of saving a couple of hundred pounds does in my experience cause endless hold ups, delays and frustration. The great thing about local solicitors is their accessibility. You can drop that paperwork off or pop in to see them and, in the worst case if they’re not taking your calls, camp out in their offices until they speak to you. 32
If an estate agent is to have any longevity, establishing relationships and mutual respect with other local estate agents, solicitors and mortgage brokers is essential in resolving issues that could otherwise sink a sale. I understand that before electronic banking and the internet it was normal p r a c t i c e f o r solicitors to visit the seller’s solicitors with the file and a bankers draft in hand to carry out what’s termed as legal completion of the transaction and this often involved travel to far flung parts of the country. Given the rise of internet security issues and identity fraud that many people have suffered one wonders if the old system may have to be resuscitated! Going back to my original point it always amazes me how the ‘Dear Homeowner’ letter writers find time to do so, surely the time would be better spent actually selling some houses and speaking to customers rather than wasting the valuable resources our planet has to offer.

ike and Dave are (man/boy) brothers. They are also ‘Party Bros’. They have that hallowed status and that’s all they seem to do. It’s the American way (and the movie is full of flag waving symbolism). However, their gross-out excesses have ruined many family occasions and their father has finally had enough. They cannot go ‘stag’ to their sweet sister’s wedding in Hawaii - they must bring dates - nice girls to calm them down. It all goes badly wrong, but it’s very funny. The ‘nice’ girls they choose are as crazy as they are, but disguise it well.
it is very American and its target audience know what they are getting. It comes from a long line of gross-out movies, which seem to compete to raise the bar of excess with each production. Being British and a bit old, I was sometimes lost. What was said (on all levels) and I was also shocked as boundaries were transgressed (it’s amazing what a 15 certificate now contains), but as usual, it all ends happily and everyone is better for it.
Let’s be clear, this isn’t ‘Woody Allen’, but Russell Baldwin

SEPTEMBER SHOWS, A FEW ARTSY EVENTS THIS MONTH Emma Beatty
BARBARA BESSANT, ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE Until 15 September Aspex Gallery has a new artist-in-residence working in its new studio; pop in and you might see her at work. Barbara Bessant is an original member of the gallery’s ‘Generate’ group, a specialist workshop for people with dementia, supported by the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group. Over the last year, she’s developed a unique artistic style, guided by workshop leaders Laura Fazackerley & Roy Eneas. “They started me off drawing shells, before moving me onto painting landscapes. I couldn’t believe it. I was actually painting.” She now specialises in boldly colourful abstract oils. “The progression that Barbara has made over the past year is truly astounding and we are excited to work with her during the next couple months to further develop her practice.” Aspex Gallery, Gunwharf Quays
JOHN GREEN, DOCKIES – Part 2, works on paper From 8 September Jack House is showing a group of smaller works on paper by local painter John Green—all on the Dockyard theme again, following the successful show earlier this year of major oil paintings. The new works are hung ‘salon’ style: in collective groups, filling the walls—prints, drawings and sketches. Green, a former rigger from the dockyard is entirely self-taught, but is a strong, sophisticated picture maker. These works are important documents about the lost world of Portsmouth’s shipping—all the ropes, wires and manual techniques, but they’re also wonderful works of art in their own right. Jack House Gallery, High Street, Old Portsmouth .
THE KINGS THEATRE is screening two plays live from
40
London’s National Theatre this month; if you can’t get along to see the real things, this cinematic option is pretty good.
NT Live: The Deep Blue Sea 5 September,
7pm Terence Rattigan’s The Deep Blue Sea is set in the stifling domesticity of 1950s London. Helen McCrory plays a scorned lover, suicidal at the end of an illicit affair. Carrie Cracknell's new production and McCrory’s star performance have had a series of rave reviews.
NT Live: The Threepenny Opera 24 September,
1pm A new version of Brecht and Weill's avantgarde musical. With Rory Kinnear as the charming murderer Macheath, Rosalie Craig as the besotted Polly Peachum and Haydn Gwynne as her mother, Mrs Peachum. Adapted by Simon Stephens and directed by Rufus Norris. Kings Theatre, Albert Road, Southsea
THE RAILWAY CHILDREN 16, 17 September, 7pm
Live on stage, a new musical adaptation of the children’s classic by E. Nesbit, produced by Stephen Kingsbury and Ben Sleep. It stays close to the original book and Nesbit’s subtle critique of the English class system, as three adolescent siblings move up to rural Yorkshire and wonder what has become of their estranged father. New Theatre Royal, 20-24 Guildhall Walk, Portsmouth
TAPAS FESTIVAL 15, 22, 29, 30 September, 7.30pm Part of the appeal of the Groundlings Theatre is its unique setting in an 18th century schoolhouse in Portsea. This show helps you explore its many spaces with a series of smaller, bite-sized shows staged in secret spaces and mysterious hidden corners. There are ten shows of comedy, music and dance to choose from, none more than 20 minutes long. Pick and mix theatre, tapas-style. Groundlings Theatre, Kent Street, Portsea

Pub Sign from Winfields Brewery at The Raven
I
came across this sign at Parmiters Antiques on Albert Road, a family run business that has been trading in Portsmouth for almost 25 years – you’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the large gold dog on the roof! I absolutely love going there because you never know what you are going to find. Ian Parmiter is extremely well known in the antiques trade for his specialist knowledge of 20th Century Antiques and has featured in Homes & Antiques, Antiques Gazette and onscreen for the BBC and ITV – a legend in his own lifetime, no less!
He pointed out this charming old sign that used to hang outside The Raven pub in Bedford Street, Southsea. I managed to find some information about the pub and brewery on a brilliant site called http://portsmouthpubs.org.uk a mine of information for anyone wanting to find out more about Portsmouth pubs, past and present. The Raven is a true “locals pub” and draws its custom from residents of the surrounding Somerstown housing estate. Built in a typically austere style in 1966, it replaced a pub called The Middleton. Originally under ownership of Brickwood’s until it was swallowed up by Whitbread in 1971, it became a free house under the ownership of current
licensee Tony Winfield in 1992. At much expense, Winfield installed a microbrewery at the rear of the pub in late 1995, producing a number of low gravity milds, bitters and stouts for sale exclusively at the pub, including Winfield’s Bitter (3.7-3.9%), Winter Mild (3.9%), Stout (3.8%), Best Bitter
(4.0%)
and
a
brilliantly named 4.5 per cent strength bitter called ‘Raven Mad’. Fiercely loyal to his regulars, the publican had a policy of discouraging ale drinkers from ‘outside’ to visit the pub. As most of the locals were predominantly lagerdrinking, this meant that the brewing operation was sporadic and shortlived and ceased within two years. The pub is very much alive and well however and plays an important role as a community hub, raising funds for various local charities. The interior of the pub is more comfortably furnished these days and there’s a range of entertainment on offer – including a pool table, live music on Saturday nights and a meat raffle is drawn on Sunday lunchtimes. Although you will struggle to find a Winfield’s Bitter there these days, one or two cask beers from independent breweries are offered at the bar, which everyone is welcome to taste! 45

SOUTHSEA CYCLES
Words: John Pryde. Photographs (unless otherwise stated): Paul Gonella/Strong Island
G
raham Childs has been in cycling since the late ‘80s, having started his career at Butlers Cycles in Eastney and later with Cycle World in Waterlooville and Peter Hansfords, Horndean, before heading to London to take up a role with Action Bikes. Graham is also a GB triathlete and an all round ironman. Kevin Watkins his business partner, comes from a Naval background and has a keen interest in fitness and wellbeing and some years ago attempted to swim the channel but was not able to complete his challenge due to a freak tidal change, with the swim being aborted just a short distance from the French coastline.

Southsea Cycles is a joint venture between Graham and Kevin and their ambitions are very much aligned to a philosophy and a strategic plan which has sustained them through their first year in business. Situated on Albert Road, slightly east of Francis Avenue, the business enjoys a healthy footfall, but the partnership is proving to be successful around some core values and principles: customer service, customer experience, product 50
knowledge and a robust after-sales service that ensures long term customer relations. The business provides a range of bikes that the community actively wants, a choice that includes bikes for children, ladies bikes, heritage, mountain,
hybrid, racing and electric. A big focus is put upon ensuring all budgets are catered for. Graham takes control of the day to day running of the business, and is supported by Mike who is store manager and extremely well versed on his subject. The service department is now a very efficient area of the business offering repairs and services to new and existing customers. Looking to the immediate and long term future, Graham and Kevin are very keen to grow the business through building partnerships with other local businesses and organisations, consolidating their retail and online business and now working towards some exciting and innovative projects and initiatives which will come to fruition shortly. Do pop in and say hello. www.southsea-cycles.co.uk tel 02392 297549 info@southsea-cycles.co.uk

ACTIVE LIFESTYLE Luke Newton
I've had the pleasure of getting to know Portsmouth Cathedral's Canon Chancellor Peter Leonard over the past year and I’ve learnt how important keeping an active lifestyle is for him. Peter, you’ve mentioned that you previously had a string of excuses for not exercising. What happened to lead you from a sedentary lifestyle and what got you training?
When I was a child I was very overweight. This led to being bullied at school and a lack of confidence which held me back from participating in sport. I did some rugby because of my size and basketball at secondary school due to my height, but very little else. As I got into my twenties I slimmed down, but could never really motivate myself into exercising consistently or regularly. It wasn't really until I was in my thirties that I began to take exercise seriously, when I discovered spinning classes! With hindsight, it wasn't so much the activity itself, but the fact that 52
I was doing it with other people. I discovered that I need people around me, a trainer telling me what to do when exercising, to motivate me. If I attend the gym on my own, as I have done for many years, I tend to just waste my time and certainly don't push myself. However, when with others or being trained by someone, I will push myself and feel motivated to do so. How important is keeping fit to your overall wellbeing? Massively important! It is time set aside for me and incredibly valuable. I have a very demanding and at times stressful job and so to have scheduled time in my diary for classes, or a personal training session, is brilliant. It allows me to switch off and to consider myself for a while. It reduces stress, has improved my confidence levels and gives me a general sense of physical and mental wellbeing. You regularly take part in the Great South Run, but you'd be the first to admit you’re not the keenest of runners. What does it mean to you? I was offered a chance to participate in 2010 - I was working as a primary school teacher and was offered a sponsored place through the local School Sports Partnership. I had never done anything like that before, but agreed and then trained hard. The day itself was amazing - there was such a great atmosphere in the city and along the route, and I not only thoroughly enjoyed it, but completed it in a very respectable time. The sense of achievement was incredible. I’ve done it every year since, not only because I enjoy it, but to remind myself that I can achieve things I had previously thought I never could. I’m not a great runner and struggle to train for it alone, but it is worth it on the day. Peter is hoping to start a Cathedral running group in partnership with Run! City Portsmouth next month for those new to running. Full article on strongisland.co

ow many times have you bought flowers for the home or as a gift for a loved one, and your beautiful bouquet has wilted and even died within a week or a few days? Liz, who began her own florist business, Rose Clover, from her home near South Parade Pier in February, explained, “it’s very difficult for most florists to predict what they might sell over a given trading period, which can affect the freshness of the stock, whereas I can travel to the flower market to hand pick the flowers I need on the morning of each customer's order. This allows me to work closely with the suppliers, and indeed the seasons, to ensure I obtain the freshest, fairest priced flowers available,“ said Liz, who trained with the prestigious Judith Blacklock Flowers of London.
Rose Clover’s designs vary from elegant and sophisticated soft country tones to big bold splashes of colour, combined with a mixture of textures. Liz endeavours to pick the longer lasting flower variants wherever possible. Besides the beautifully crafted arrangements, Rose Clover also offers low maintenance house plants in some very stylish pots. If you’re in need of any indoor greenery, it’s definitely worth checking the company’s
website. A lot of the products are Scandinavian in style, but Liz also collaborates with independent artists and crafters. This month Liz is launching a new range of fairtrade baskets from The Basket Room, an ethical lifestyle brand who specialise in handwoven sisal baskets made in Africa. Colours range from neutral black and grey to vibrant pink and yellow.
Liz will be at the next Castle Road market on Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th September, but if you can’t wait until then, you can view and buy Rose Clover’s product range in Bureau of Change, 154 Elm Grove from Tuesday 6th September.
