fter a glorious summer that seemed to continue well into September, I’m trying hard to be upbeat about the autumn. This isn't a season I look forward to, perhaps as it’s a time I associate with returning to school after the long summer holidays, or with the colder, darker evenings to come. It feels like a time for knuckling down to old routines and sewing buttons on to winter coats.
But this is no place for me to discuss my inner psyche, besides, Tara Knight enjoys this time of year and reminds us it’s a time to prepare for feasting and for all off the lovely comforting soups, stews and mulled cider we can enjoy in the coming weeks and months (p.20). As for schooldays, Lynn Nicholls talks about some of the inspirational people who may have set off on a particular career path, only to discover that what they would really like to do is to train as a teacher (p.26). If you are thinking of staying in and hibernating, Emma Beatty encourages us to get out there and enjoy all of the cultural entertainment that our city has to offer (p.40), and if you like walking and looking at art, join the Portsmouth Art Trail on 14th October. There's even your very own trail guide in this month’s centre pages. Kevin John Dean

KASSASSIN STREET - LOCAL HEROES
f you haven’t heard of Kassassin Street, you soon will. These five Pompey boys have been
jamming since they were at college. The band is named after a street in Eastney. Melodic
pop hooks, a psychedelic edge, and the ability to get the crowd dancing, have rocketed the
band from local gigs to an international following. I first saw them at Castle Road Record Store Day. As my wife and I debated whether to hang around, the bloke next to us said, “You haven’t seen Kassassin Street? You can’t go now.”
Half an hour later, we were fans. As they prepare to go out on tour, between Southsea Fest and selling out the Wedgewood Rooms, I asked singer Rowan Bastable and the band a few questions.
Rowan Bastable
Tell us about the yellow jacket. I have developed a passion for all things yellow. Bananas, Marigolds (the washing up kind), Donald Trump’s comb-over... 6
Loved the new songs at Victorious. Is the band growing in confidence? Playing mostly new tracks to a big crowd was daunting but we knew Victorious Festival would be up for a party.
Nathan’s a super-communicative drummer. What is going through his mind? Nathan lives for drumming. But I have control over what he hears live: generally my words of comfort in a sexy French accent. Is your song-writing process always the same? Every song in the set has started somewhere different. From jamming together to acoustic guitar and vocal demos or arrangements recorded in a bedroom. Some come out like the initial idea. Others take weeks of development. It can be exciting, frustrating and hair-pullingly stressful, but great. Tell us the secrets behind one song. We have a new song called ‘Do or Die’. It’s a pick at people who complain about where they are without making an effort to change it. It’s also a guilty poke at myself, often a horrendous procrastinator! Many people in our generation are stuck in a rut, having trained for years to end up in minimum wage jobs, skills wasted. The lack of incentive can get you down. To quote Scroobius Pip, “The system might fail you but don’t fail yourself, just get better.” It must be satisfying to ramp up the set till everyone’s dancing. Getting people jumping about and losing themselves has been a goal from early days. Seeing it and hearing people sing along is an immense feeling. It spurs us on and lets you know you haven’t ****ed it up! Influences? Gigs and festivals. A great band whipping the crowd into a frenzy inspires

What sacrifices does it require to be in the band? I won’t go into specifics, but I apologise to and thank friends, family and loved ones that put up with us hermiting ourselves away. And those who put up with me after a home gig hangover.
you to get writing. Anyone who makes me think, ‘How did they make that noise?’ Worst moment? Four grand’s worth of gear nicked half way through a tour. We finished the tour regardless and had a bloody good time doing it. What do you think of the Pompey music scene? Pompey is our home and we love playing here! I’ve seen killer line-ups announced at the Wedge and Pyramids, so hopefully a bigger wave of Pompey people will get excited about live music and new bands. Best gig? I can’t pick one. Secret Garden Party, where people were going nuts. SOS 4.8 in Spain, where we were treated like kings. Hometown shows at the Wedgewood Rooms or Victorious where you can let loose and know people are behind you all the way. What’s next? We’re back at the Wedgewood Rooms on 24th November, with a tour leading up. Also Southsea Fest is back, so we’ll see you at the Pyramids stage. Ambitions? Someone just told me you can batter and deep fry an avocado with bacon and an egg so all ambitions have been realised. Visit kassassinstreet.com

I was talking to a former council employee recently about the viability of the city’s housing stock. On the subject of students, the former Zurich offices near Commercial Road continues its conversion into student accomodation, and what an amazing project that looks to be. There’s also a huge benefit to employment that this type of conversion or regeneration project creates.

I like to picture the new tree in generations to come, as it colours the cityscape and provides a home for wildlife, but if progress is to be made for the city as a whole, we will have to make some difficult decisions that not only impact on our lives today, but create the possibilities of a better and more sustainable future. I’m reminded of a quote by George Bernard Shaw: “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man”.

FRONT GARDENS DON'T NEED TO BE BARE!
P
Lorien Lotten
eople often ask me what it’s like to work as a gardener and garden designer in a city with such small gardens. Over many years, my team and I have evolved ways of building gardens that make the best of small spaces. Back gardens usually command the most attention, but I’d like to encourage people not to forget the front garden.
There are rows and rows of identical Victorian and Edwardian houses in Portsmouth and Southsea, most of which have a small front forecourt where the bins are normally kept. This space is usually bare and laid to concrete, or has a mixture of tiles and shingle. This is a totally unutilised space and yet, its at the very front of the property for all to see. Think about removing all the concrete and hard surfacing, this can usually be done easily with a Kango hammer and a bit of hard work. Once this is cleared, you may find rubble and hopefully some usable soil, to which you can add some good organic planting compost, mixed with some extra topsoil. Then the choice of planting is yours to play with. You
18
can go for soft grasses with tall Verbena growing through, to attract the bees and butterflies. Scented Lavender, Olives, Jasmine and Rosemary will create a fabulous scent as you pass by. Edible beans, tomatoes and sweet peas on an obelisk will give interest and food in one go. The possibilities are endless and with a bit of watering and care, the planting will soften the front of your home and attract more wildlife to the road. Think of the benefits to the environment of stopping water leaving your property by putting in a slim water butt, which will enable you to water your new plants easily. Also, by having a bed in the front, the plants will soak up any excess water rather than filling our already overloaded drains and helping to reduce the chance of localised flooding. If you don't have a front forecourt, window boxes, hanging baskets and wall mounted pots will have just as much effect and will stand out against the stone and brick of the house. So get thinking, get digging, get gardening and let’s green up our city.

AUTUMN NOSTALGIA Tara Knight

s summer draws to its close and our evenings become longer, we enter the most comforting of all the seasons. Autumn is a uniquely British time for nostalgia – back to school, picking up conkers, wrapping up warm and walking with the cold air o n o u r f a c e , Halloween, bonfire night – all of these triggers signal the imminent feasting at the end of the year. In autumn, as nature is seen to retreat, we are prompted to dig our roots deeper and experience the world around us. Who doesn’t love the crunch of leaves underfoot and isn’t amazed by the beauty of trees and their ever-changing colours? The weather around us and our food choices fall into synchronicity. Food enables a direct connection to our environment through the physical consumption of its seasonal offerings. My emotional bond to food is heightened at this time of year, as I think about comforting stews, crumbles, soups, roast dinners and hot pots; about drinking chai or mulled cider after a cold walk. Who isn’t comforted by autumnal food? I have written previously on the benefits of eating 20
seasonally – the nutritional effects are increased and in-season produce simply tastes better. Coming into colder months your body requires additional vitamins and minerals to help maintain overall wellness – good multivitamins can assist with this, but why not boost your overall levels through eating the right types of food? Green leafy vegetables, such as kale, cabbage and swiss chard are in abundance; they all have nutritional powerhouses with high levels of antioxidants, minerals such as calcium and vitamins, particularly A, C and K. Winter squash season is coming and pumpkins are not just for carving! Pumpkins, orange squash and carrots all contain beta-carotene – this carotenoid not only gives them their beautiful autumnal colour but also converts into vitamin A within the body, which can help aid vision – perfect for darker evenings. Somehow nature always knows what we need and when we need it. Eating seasonal produce can help support our overall wellbeing as well as providing the comfort and nostalgia that we need.

If you would like to see the clothes before you buy, you can view the collection in Southsea on Monday, Thursday or Saturday. Email hello@naranjacloud.co.uk or message via facebook.

SOMETHING UNIQUE
Barbara Tipple gives advice on achieving a perfect piece of bespoke jewellery
C
ommissioning a piece of jewellery isn’t simply the privilege of the rich. Anyone can have a unique piece that is very personal to them, celebrating a person or an occasion to last a life time.
THE STARTING POINT
So where do you start? If you’re commissioning for the first time it can seem daunting, the first step is to do your research. Find a jeweller whose work you admire. You are placing your trust in them to create something beautiful, so examine their work, checking the reputation of both the designer and goldsmith. Have they won awards? Has the goldsmith been admitted to the ‘Freedom of the Mystery of Goldsmiths of the City of London’? Recommendation is essential but it is also about taste and what you love. The process starts with a conversation, an opportunity for you to explore your ideas and engage the creativity of the designer. After the initial consultation, normally free of charge, you may discuss the details of the design, materials, budget and deadline. The designer will provide ideas, sketches and an estimated price. Commissioning is very personal, you are likely to spend some time with the designer, honing the design. Some jewellers are happy to create whatever the client wishes. Others, only what suits their collections. Once the final design is approved it is customary to pay a 50% deposit, with final payment on completion. I so enjoy working with clients and understanding the inspiration for the piece. I’ll try to entwine stories, which are personal to the client into my designs. I then oversee the production to the finest detail. We introduce clients to our collections of rare and beautiful gemstones if desired, and the client can choose the stone ‘that speaks to them’. I work carefully
within a budget and have had commissions from £100 to £150,000. One client chose an incredibly rare stone from our collection to be set into a ring along with a bejewelled display box. I was given a free reign and two years to make the piece, as it was a very technically difficult piece to make.
David Ward at work
David Ward, our master goldsmith, devised an invisible internal hinge to the box. It meant that the beauty of the box was not spoiled by a hinge that could be seen from the outside. The client kindly allowed Goldsmiths Hall to exhibit the piece in their ‘2000 years of Gold Jewellery’ exhibition which fortunately finished the day before the recipients’ birthday. On picking it up and seeing the ring and box finished for the first time, it was heart-warming to see the emotion he felt. .
THE MOMENT OF JOY
Picking up your piece is a very special moment. I love to see people’s faces as they are introduced to the finished piece, knowing that it is both unique and personal to them. As part of the final step we always provide advice on how to look after the jewellery and offer complimentary polishes in our workshop so that the jewellery always looks its best, providing years of pleasure.
Barbara Tipple and David Ward have jewellery shops with workshops attached in Portsmouth and Mayfair. They have been awarded the Freedom of the City of London and Barbara was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Portsmouth. 38

CULTURE VULTURE BRIGHT LIGHTS FOR THE DARK DAYS Emma Beatty After the sunniest summer on record, the nights are finally drawing in. Tempted to hunker down indoors? Don’t be lazy; there’s a bumper crop of sparkling events all over Southsea to light us through the dark days ahead.
ROYAL FLUSH AT THE KINGS THEATRE Pop royalty 10cc are coming to The Kings Theatre (11 Oct). These ‘70s songwriting legends have had their ups and downs over the past 40 years, but Graham Gouldman is still the frontman. He’ll perform the whole of the 1974 album Sheet Music, famed for its exploratory lyrics and inventive hijinks. He’ll then play greatest hits such as I'm Not In Love, Rubber Bullets and Dreadlock Holiday. Even the great Graham Gouldman can’t rival Tchaikovsky for melodic inventiveness. You can compare notes, as The Russian State Ballet brings both: Swan Lake and The Nutcracker to The Kings (21, 22 Oct), complete with a live orchestra. No matter how many times you’ve seen these two classics of classical ballet, they’re always danced differently by each company. There’s also a matinee for children. More bold theatrics as The Ellen Kent Opera Company brings Verdi’s Aida to The Kings (9 Oct). This Egyptian epic is one of the grandest of grand operas. Here it comes with full orchestra, chorus, a temple dance and cascades of glittering fire for the Triumphal March. French soprano Ola Perrier is the Ethiopian slave girl Aida, and Romanian mezzo Liza Kadelnik is her Egyptian love rival Amneris. There’s more high drama in two live RSC broadcasts at The Kings: King Lear (16 Oct) with Anthony Sher as the ‘poor forked creature’, and the less known and rarely performed Cymbeline (3 Oct). The latter, one of Shakespeare’s last and most extraordinary works, is also about a beleaguered British king. (There should probably be some witty word play here on kings at The Kings…). Kings Theatre, Albert Road, Southsea 40
ELSEWHERE IN PORTSMOUTH… Not to be outdone, The Groundlings Theatre stages Macbeth (31 Oct-11 Nov), in an “intimate in-the-round setting” that promises to immerse the audience into a world of “dark magic” Kent Street, Portsea While in Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral, there’s more royal tragedy, in a rare performance of T.S. Eliot’s verse play Murder in the Cathedral (1 Oct). A retelling of the events leading to the murder of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170, at the behest of Henry II. At The Guildhall, there’s more Tchaikovsky from Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in two separate gigs. Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 and Walton’s First Symphony (5 Oct); and Tchaikovsky’s Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture and Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.1 (27 October). At The New Theatre Royal, things are more contemporary with the theatre debut of Maria Alyokhina from the Russian revolutionary pop rebels Pussy Riot in a new work by the Belarus Free Theatre (14 Oct, see p.50). If you’re exhausted from too much theatre-going, get some fresh air on the ArtTrail. It will take you all over the city (14-16 Oct). Just as this went to press, we heard that there’s new work by up-and-coming artist Amartey Golding at Jack House Gallery on Portsmouth High Street (from 20 Oct, dates TBC). Golding was the first artist to show at the gallery when it opened in April 2015 with a series of huge charcoal drawings. Since then, he’s has been working on a new series of drypoint etchings. And finally, clocks go back on 30 October. Get your pumpkins out to ward off the dark. There are lots of spooky events: HMS Warrior has a Ghost Walk (28 Oct). HMS Sultan has bonfire and fireworks (27 Oct). And, there’s a Ghost Race though Foxes Forest (29 Oct). Wear something luminous and don’t forget your headtorch.

JOURNEYS FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL
P
Emily Harris, describes a festival and celebration of refugee artists
ortsmouth will host a wide range of innovative and entertaining activity from exceptional refugee artists from 10th – 22nd October. Journeys Festival International will showcase work exploring the refugee experience, which will include extraordinary theatre, an outdoor gallery, Coffee Shop Conversations and pop up theatre, all celebrating the artistic talent and incredible stories of refugee artists and asylum seekers. Produced by Leicester based ArtReach, the festival intends to create conversation within the community through arts and culture. The acclaimed production Burning Doors by Belarus Free Theatre will be at New Theatre Royal for one night only on Friday 14 October featuring the theatre debut of Pussy Riot’s Maria Alyokhina. The production tells the true stories of persecuted artists, living under dictatorship, who will not be silenced.
And, if you like theatre, Pamodzi Creative Productions & New Theatre Royal will present an immersive, interactive pop-up piece of dancetheatre fusion on Thursday 13 October, exploring the 10,000 refugee children who are currently missing in Europe alone. The Festival will also feature Look Up - a high impact, large scale outdoor visual arts exhibition on the exteriors of iconic buildings across Portsmouth’s cityscape; a series of free Coffee Shop Conversations that give an opportunity to the public to discuss and exchange views with refugee artists over the domestic ritual of coffee and cake; Sanctuary & Sustenance: The Story of Many Journeys to the UK, is a stunning multimedia projection of photography, film and music, that is making its UK premiere in the majestic setting of Portsmouth Cathedral; and on Saturday 15 October, the Guildhall will host a family friendly activity day Let’s Go Fly a Kite, that celebrates kite flying culture in digital and hands-on workshops.
