O

ne of the pleasures of publishing Southsea Lifestyle, is that I get a sneak preview of all the forthcoming events. One fascinating

trend over the years has been the growth of community markets. For example I can see that on one

day (Saturday 3rd December), it will be possible to visit three quality markets, starting with the popular and vibrant Love Southsea Market in Palmerston Road. Then head to the Castle Road Christmas Festival Market, featuring vintage clothes, records and live music, followed by a stroll along the Common to the new Hotwalls Studios Festive Creative Market - a carefully curated show of the city’s artists and makers. If you’d like to extend your creative experience further, pop along to the biennial Craft Emergency exhibition at Aspex (page 45), to view the work of the eleven selected artist/makers. According to the Crafts Council, ‘the overall value of craft skills to the British economy is £3.4bn’ - creativity and markets, it looks like a trend that’s on the up. Kevin John Dean

FESTIVE HMS WARRIOR 1860

n the 20th September, HMS Warrior 1860 welcomed on board the winners of the colouring competition published on the cover of the July edition of Southsea Lifestyle Magazine. A presentation was held at the Captain’s cabin. Children’s prizes included a key fob made by HMS Warrior’s very own rope-maker, as well as a tour of the ship. The adults were presented with a Christmas lantern, also made on board, and a year’s membership

of the Warrior Association. Congratulations to all the winners, including those who were sadly unable to attend. The standard of entries was extremely high. HMS Warrior 1860 is eagerly anticipating the festive season, with some exciting events: during the Victorian Festival of Christmas, 25-27 th November, the ship will be opening the old Galley on board from 11am-3pm, where you can try some traditional pot mess, ships biscuits and hot chocolate. This year the Warrior is proud to host the Portsmouth City Band, who will be playing classic Christmas songs on the Gun deck - not to be missed. Finally, in the New Year on Saturday 21st January, there will a ‘Burns Night Dinner’ which celebrates Scotland’s famous bard with traditional fayre and entertainment throughout the night, finishing with a Ceilidh band on the Officer’s Half Deck. IN THE RAW Tara Knight

I

n February I discussed how this year nourishing food was poised to have its moment. As I look around town and beyond, I see more and more food establishments offering nutritious twists on classics and menu items such as overnight oats, energy balls and smashed avocado. Healthy food looks like it is here to stay, and indeed the top food trends forecasted for 2017 are centred in health and wellness. One of these predictions is raw, which is something I often get asked about; so here are the reasons why I love raw food. Often associated with plant based (vegan) cuisine, raw foods are sometimes referred to as living and are usually not heated to above 41 degrees. Keeping food raw is thought to help its nutrients, enzymes and vitamins remain intact and therefore be beneficial for our overall wellbeing. For me, it is also deeply tasty: fresh food tastes good.

As a food producer, I believe that we have a responsibility to prepare foods that not only taste and look good, but also nourish and, from a professional viewpoint, raw food can help bridge this gap between culinary art and nutrition. It excites me that new techniques are being 14

developed all the time and it is possible to create raw crackers, pates, ice cream and even jam (yes, really). My favourite raw food – cake has been populart for a while. Raw cakes use replacement ingredients that nourish our bodies. For example cashews or macadamia nuts can be soaked and blended in place of cheese to create “cheezecakes”; caramels can be made from dates and flours from seeds. What is not to like, when a cake tastes great, provides you with good fat and proteins, and leaves you feeling sustained without the sugar crash? Never has the term have your cake and eat it been so apt. Minimally processed fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds can help to support overall better health and also tastes incredibly good when prepared with the right ingredients and skills. But don’t despair if this sounds complicated, or you don’t have access to a professional kitchen as it is easy to incorporate more raw foods into your diet (and most of us do so without even realising it). Add salads and simple uncooked sides to your main meals, try a juice or smoothie, eat fresh fruit and you will be on your way in no time.

Respecting its historic past, (circa 1859), the King Street Tavern (KST), has undergone a hugely sympathetic refit, opening its doors once more in June to friends new and old. A brand new kitchen has been installed which includes a charcoal BBQ oven and smoker, giving the KST signature smokehouse dishes an unrivalled flavour and succulence. Tucked away off Elm Grove and King Street in a tree lined c onservation area, the KST serves its full regular menu six days a week. The Express Lunch menu is available Wednesday - Friday and there’s also the much loved traditional Sunday lunch. The Christmas menu will be available from 21 st November. Not forgetting an impressive range of craft beers and quality of wines. Check out the KST Facebook page for news about its live music and special events.

A TOUCH OF BURLESQUE William Sutton

Joe Black is a Portsmouth celebrity, who has supported Eddie Izzard on tour and performed at festivals from Edinburgh to Wave-GotikTreffen, Leipzig. A leading light of the dark cabaret genre, he has been described as a “drag clown”, “musical comedy misfit” and (by Jonathan Ross) simply “Amazing”.

Joe’s bi-annual HOUSE OF BURLESQUE, showcases comedic burlesque talents to a diverse (and fabulously dressed) audience at the King’s Theatre. His solo show MEET ME AT THE ELDORADO (Wedgewood Rooms, 6 November) mixes 1930s Berlin’s fun, filth and frivolity with songs, stories and charming the pants of his audience. Is Joe Black a character or a real person? It’s my name. But it is an exaggeration. When the makeup and costume go on, I put on this air, confused and awkward, bolshy and confident. It brings out my inner clown. What’s your genre? Cabaret? I facilitate burlesque, and comedy. Personally, I call myself a gin-addled cabaret reprobate, musical comedian, and wonky raconteur. I’m not a female impersonator. I love this old Hollywood, silent movie, vintage look. I’m often called a mischievous imp.

Photo: Ash Photographer

How did you get into alternative performing? I did street performing: ‘living statue’, accordion. I was seventeen. Like the mischievous little clown I was, I covered a Tiger Lillies song ‘Start a Fire!’ in a shopping centre, and got escorted out by security. There’s no invisible barrier between me and the audience. Every night it’s different, because I communicate with the audience and feedback from them. That creates something magical. It’s more polished now, but that training was important. I’ve been doing this nine years, and I’m still learning. 26

What was it like growing up in Portsmouth? As a teenager, I was awkward, quiet and strange. Now I’m loud, bolshy and strange. Portsmouth is not the most forgiving of places sometimes. Running HOUSE OF BURLESQUE, I’ve made somewhere that people can dress up and feel comfortable. There’s that line from CABARET: “Outside it is cold, but in here it’s so hot.” That’s what I love, making that bubble where people feel comfortable, people who maybe feel detached. Tell us about recording at Rant Studios. Paul! Paul ran that recording studio. As a 17-year-old with no money, for him just to let me get on with it was great. I hear those recordings and think, “This is bloody awful.” But I wouldn’t be where I am without that.

Ambitions? Gigs and festivals. A great band whipping the crowd into a frenzy inspires you to get writing. Anyone who makes me think, ‘How did they make that noise?’ Reviews “Charismatic and downright filthy.” BROADWAY BABY “The king of cabaret noir.” METRO “Eccentric, edgy and witty.” PORTSMOUTH NEWS Shows MEET ME AT THE ELDORADO, Wedgewood Rooms, 6 November. HOUSE OF BURLESQUE, King’s Theatre, 28 January 2017. www.misterjoeblack.com t misterjoeblack f misterjoeblac¬kmusic

Most exciting moment? Scariest? Flying to Australia. A lady on Facebook, who runs burlesque events, said, “I’ll put you up and pay you to host my show.” That moment of weird trust: she could have been mad. She wasn’t. 28

Photo: Ash Photographer

Influences? Great song titles! ‘If You Leave Me I’ll Kill You’? (laughs) The songwriting has changed a lot. Originally I wrote to be macabre, but so outrageous that people would laugh. Then I learnt about writing comedy. I like weird stuff: Nick Cave, Tom Waits, but also Tom Lehrer, Victoria Wood, the Tiger Lillies. I like 1920s, 1930s stuff, ridiculous musical comedy, vaudeville, and cabaret. I try to mash all that up.

EDWARD KING & MILTON LOCKS

A

Lianne de Mello

n incredible exhibition of 70 paintings currently hangs in the Portsmouth Museum’s main exhibition space, sprung from the hand of the great artist Edward King. He was committed to St James’ Hospital in Milton in 1925, from where he painted many images of the natural coastline and green spaces around the hospital, like Milton Locks.

dappled sunlight provide food for painted lady and small copper butterflies. The path snakes through tall grass buzzing with an orchestra of grasshoppers and crickets, before opening out to the shoreline itself. Depending on the tide, you might be lucky enough to spot tiny fish in the shallows, crabs scuttling between clumps of seaweed, or oystercatchers foraging on the mudflats. It’s a rare pocket of wildness on a largely urban island. With the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Wildlife Trust is putting Milton Locks back at the heart of the community. In the spirit of Edward King, we recently held a community art day, giving local families and artists the chance to portray the modern day scene.

His scenes of houseboats at the Locks can seem quaint and distant, but the reality is that it forms part of our city’s recent history; there are many in Portsmouth who still remember living, playing and exploring in and around this thriving community on our island’s coastline. The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust-run nature reserve now at Milton Locks is the last remaining section of natural shoreline on this side of the harbour. Hints at the area’s history arrive on the shore regularly in the form of driftwood and seaglass. But what really puts this unassuming hectare of land on today’s map is the array of wildlife that now calls it home. The small wood provides much-needed shelter to birds like starlings and house sparrows. In the summer the nectar-rich flowers that grow in the 30

And it’s already proven itself as an ideal place for the next generation to have their first outdoors experience – with hundreds of children learning about natural history through seashore safaris and treasure hunts on school visits.

There’s more to come, as we build a team of volunteers to help us look after the reserve, and champion green space at the heart of the community. A VERY BIG NIGHT FOR A RATHER SMALL BUSINESS John Worsey

I

t’s nine minutes past midnight, Friday 21st October 2016. I’m sitting on the 11:15pm Waterloo to Portsmouth train with my laptop open. I won’t get to bed for over an hour. The man opposite is dozing in his seat. I’m wide awake. Samantha, my wife, business partner and travelling companion is looking at a screen too. She’s replying to an enquiry about an online order.

I don’t want to shatter any illusions, but let me assure you: You don’t turn over millions from your kitchen table. You see, we might have spent the night in glamorous surroundings, dressed to the nines in our finery, but when the entertainment was announced, we slipped away to catch our train. No night in a swanky hotel for us. Micro Business means Micro Business.

A little over an hour ago, we were sitting in very different surroundings. Drinking wine under the glimmering chandeliers of central London’s Grand Connaught Rooms. Soaking up the expectant atmosphere as the winners of the British Small Business Awards were announced. Joining in the applause. Tapping our fingers nervously as the moment drew closer when the Micro Business of the Year would be revealed. That’s our category.

We might be late to bed, but we’ll be up early. Stocktaking, re-stocking stockists around Portsmouth, then banking. Sitting at the computer, answering emails, ordering ingredients and planning some promo. Assembling and packing online orders, then heading to the Post Office to send them on their way. Picking up fresh materials on the journey home. After dinner, we’ll wrap soap, label balms and get everything together for the market on Saturday. In the midst of all that, I’ll find time to write copy for my freelance clients too.

We didn’t win. But - if you’ll allow me a cliché - simply being there felt like a victory. Just 18 months old, Southsea Bathing Hut. the natural skincare company started from our kitchen table, beat over 600 other entrants to the shortlist. The businessman who sat to our left at the awards lives in our dream home: he’s got acres of land, goats, the whole Escape To The Country package. Earlier, the guy to our right casually explained that he has two businesses. One turned over £14 million last year. The other is just a few years old, so it only managed £7.6 million. We nodded, mm-hm’d and tried to stop our jaws dropping. 32

That’s a pretty typical day for the many tiny family businesses that keep Britain’s economy ticking over. The days are long, the nights are short. It sometimes feels as if every penny that comes in is already marked to pay down the thousand-and-one expenses of business. Southsea Bathing Hut isn’t standing still. Growth costs. That’s how we got to the Grand Connaught Rooms. It costs time, too. It’s months since we had a weekend free to take things easy. Christmas is set to be a whirlwind. But that’s okay. We have a plan. We’ll sleep in January.

COFFIN MEASURERS AND FAKE SNOW

S

Trushali Chudasama

ome 35,000 people are expected to visit the Festival of Christmas in the Historic Dockyard this year. If you have never visited it before and its looming ships, this is your chance – with added elves, fake snow, and a beer tent (25-27 November). The Victorian Festival of Christmas is now in its 17th year – so it is obviously getting something right. Entry will get you into all the attractions including the new-look Mary Rose, HMS Victory, HMS Warrior 1860, The National Museum of the Royal Navy, Boathouse 4 and Action Stations.

This year, alongside the magical winter wonderland, organisers promise a ‘darker side of Christmas in Victorian times’. Historic parts of the dockyard will see a ‘complete transformation’ into a Victorian-style street, complete with coffin measurers, ladies of the night and street urchins. You can drink in a pub modelled on Fagin’s Tavern, and shop at the Christmas market (watch out for Fagin and his pickpockets). Students listen up - you get good value – tickets are only £14.00 for you. This is your chance to see some naval history and drink something other than snakebite; there’ll be plenty of alcohol tasters. Lor blessum! 34

FILM

T

Don’t Breathe USA 2015 Director: Fede Alvarez Cert 15

hree young burglars act on some inside information that a blind veteran has over $300,000 stashed in his house from an insurance payout, following his daughter’s death in a road accident. They decide to break into the house to steal it. 'Easy money, they think. ‘Like taking candy from a baby’. It all goes badly wrong.

They become trapped in a labyrinthine house in a deserted part of town by the blind old recluse and his very nasty dog - and his very nasty secret. It’s the claustrophobic setting and the

menace of the veteran within his own territory that gives Don’t Breathe an extra edginess and fright factor. There is also an ambiguity about the film’s ‘goodies and baddies’. Everyone is tainted in someway, but it all builds to an effective climax with numerous scares and jumps along the way. Yet, as so often in cinema, when a ‘baddie’ is hit over the head umpteen times with a club hammer and collapses to the floor, that should be the end of him, but five minutes later he’s up again, causing more mayhem. How does that happen?

alloween may be over, but this year darkness is going to linger after the pumpkins have been extinguished. This November sees the arrival of Portsmouth DarkFest, a new creative and cultural festival exploring all things dark, supernatural and sinister. Inspired by the Supernatural Cities project (www.port.ac.uk/supernaturalcities) at the University of Portsmouth, and working in collaboration with Portsmouth Writers’ Hub and artists from 1000 Plateaus, the festival will bring together the city’s rich and diverse creative talents to explore ghost stories, urban legends, historical serial killers and ‘Pompey noir’. Celebrating creativity in Southsea and Portsmouth, events include storytelling, live music, poetry performances, public talks, film screenings, plays, art exhibitions, and a ghost walk. The festival runs in venues across the city from 27th Oct to 30th Nov and all events are open to the public. ROBOTS AT KING’S SHIP, BALLET AT JACK HOUSE AND A NEWLY DISCOVERED DICKENS SKETCH Emma Beatty

SAM SCHULMAN AKA LEFTY SKETCH King’s Ship Gallery, Marmion Rd, Preview: 4th Nov, 7-9pm On throughout November First solo show for this self-taught Portsmouth artist who paints and draws on all sorts of found media – wooden panels, walls, doors, skateboard decks, vinyl, cars. He’s most known for his little cartoon robot: beakerbot. Drawn in bright clear colour in spray paint and posca pens. A winsomely benign alien with antenna and wide eyes who you may’ve seen pasted up on lampposts around Southsea. “I’ve always loved robots. I think it's because there are no limits to what I can include. Beaker bot was created by me sketching out a few ideas. I liked the shapes I had created then put some eyes, legs and arms on it and there was beaker bot. I realised that the shapes resembled the beakers I used to use in chemistry lessons at school and that was the name sorted.” Lefty thinks “everyone should have the chance to enjoy art and own a piece” – so there’ll be some excellent affordable prices.

AMARTEY GOLDING: CHAINMAIL Jack House Gallery, Portsmouth High Street Until 20 November Jack House has another first – the premier of a new film by young London 46

artist Amartey Golding, shown alongside new works on paper, including some large-scale life drawings inspired, slightly bizarrely, by Great British Bake Off winner, Ruby Tandoh. The film is Golding’s first venture in video and runs for some 15 minutes. It stars the artist’s brother Solomon Golding – the first British black man at the Royal Ballet. The famous ballet company has quite a few black dancers, but has struggled to find any from Britain – so Solomon’s story is unique.

The brothers grew up in Tottenham, exposed to tough black gang culture – a difficult environment for aspiring artists and ballet dancers. Yet, these different worlds share interests in outer appearance, male uniform and the formalisation of violence. The film mixes allusions to these strands in references to tribal warriors, medieval portraiture and contemporary gang behaviour. It’s beautifully filmed and a first for Portsmouth. Cont’d p.48

TALES FROM THE SERENISSIMA: BAROQUE TROVE – CRAFTWORK INSPIRED BY THE SEA Aspex Gallery, Gunwharf Quays Until 8 January OPERA FROM VENICE New Theatre Royal Portsmouth Ulysses’ Homecoming, Tuesday 8 November, 7:30pm, Xerxes, Wednesday 9 November, 7:30pm Yet another first - a taste of Venetian high culture comes to Pompey this month as The English Touring Opera visits for the first time. It brings two pieces of soaring Baroque opera, one by Handel and one by Monteverdi – both in new productions and accompanied by 50-piece period orchestra, the Old Street Band Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse (1640) starts long after the end of the Trojan War when the weary Ulysses is finally reunited with his wife Penelope. In Handel’s Xerxes (1738), the farcical Venetian tale of a Persian king jealous of his more attractive brother is relocated to the Battle of Britain. With pre-show talks before both performances.

Aspex’s latest craft show has pieces inspired by our local South Coast—from bold ceramics, to delicately hand-crafted silver jewellery and driftwood sculptures. Many are for sale; good additions to your Christmas list, perhaps? Artists include Laura Bennett, a resident at the Hotwalls Studios in Old Portsmouth. Her collection includes tiny hand-pierced sterling silver and birchwood reliefs of Southsea landmarks. Fellow jeweller Alex Yule’s understated ‘Urchin’ and ‘Mussel’ collections are based on her beachcombing finds as a teenager. The smallest of her shell collection – a tiny round sea urchin – has become the model for many delicate silver rings and pendants.

CHARLES DICKENS: THE ART OF THE STORY Portsmouth City Museum Until March 2017 The Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum closes over winter and won’t reopen until February 2017. To tide the gap, a rare showing of the city’s Dicken’s Collection goes on show at the City Museum. On view are some 130 works: watercolours by Kyd, engravings by George Cruikshank, Frederick Barnard and Hablot Knight Browne as well as lithographs, illustrated cigarette cards and books themed by specific Dickens novels. All belong to the Portsmouth Museum’s collections. They include a newly rediscovered study watercolour by Kyd from Dickens’ The Old Curiosity Shop. It goes on show alongside a more finished final drawing of the same scene.

Each and every child deserves happiness and an equal chance at what life has to offer. More info Ellie Milner 07801292553 www.armsaroundthechild.org ellie@armsaroundthechild.org
