P
olitics can be riveting, especially leading up to this month’s general election. In the space of a day or two, we can witness, solemnity, aspiration, climbdowns and farce. All came to an abrupt halt after the appalling terrorist attack in Manchester, watching the news became almost unbearable. A year ago, on 16th June another terrible act took place, the murder of Jo Cox - during a divisive EU referendum. In a celebration of Jo Cox’s life and in an effort to unite communities and move forward, The Jo Cox foundation is promoting ’The Great Get Together’ weekend. Read about Southsea’s very own Great Get Together on page (p. 24 - 25). As we enter the festival season, we talk to KT Tunstall and Tom Walker about their music careers, festivals and Victorious (p.26 - 28). On the subject of festivals we are delighted to be part of The Portsmouth Seafood Festival at Gunwharf Quays on 24th & 25th June. A celebration of our city’s fishing heritage and sustainability, cooking demonstrations and of course a chance to sample some amazing seafood. And we mustn’t forget the 2017 Portsmouth Festivities 16th - 25th June.

This month gives us all an opportunity to join a community event, or activity - whatever your interests, politics and beliefs. In the words of Jo Cox, “We have far more in common than that which us divides us”, let’s make June the month we all accept our differences and move forward. Kevin John Dean

“We’ve been gradually improving the courts and facilities since 2013; having this standard of tennis tournament at Canoe Lake is the culmination of a lot of hard work and investment,” said John Cooke, CEO of Canoe Lake Leisure. In 2013, a small group of individuals formed the company Canoe Lake Leisure Limited, in order to safeguard the future of the Canoe Lake public grass courts, as council funding cuts resulted in an uncertain future. The former ladies’ bowls pavilion was soon converted into Greens Café, serving locally sourced and healthy options to all visitors. The latest addition to the site is a contemporary pavilion which will host a range

WHAT TO DO WITH THE HOUSE OF GOD? Neil Maxwell
I
’ve been involved with many housing developments over the years, but the most memorable one was the redevelopment of the former Garrison Church of the Royal Marines Barracks Eastney twenty years ago. It is now known as Grand Division Row, there formerly being four Grand Divisions of Royal Marines based at Scapa Flow, Chatham, Portsmouth and Plymouth. When we were first appointed to sell the site it was boarded up, overgrown and derelict with fox dens, and, believe it or not, a former Royal Marine who built a defendable position in the grounds, from which he refused to be moved as he was defending the church from the developers. He was encouraged to leave as sympathetically as possible and asked to be given first refusal for one of the homes which he duly was. I had sympathy with him coming from a military family and was concerned that the rich heritage surrounding the building would be lost forever. The church itself was an ‘Admiralty pattern’ design, having being designed for the Royal Navy, and there are two others exactly like it in Plymouth and Mumbai. The church did not stand on consecrated ground, so there was no graveyard to worry about allowing each property a garden facing in a southerly direction.
Internally, there were some ornate memorial murals dedicated to fallen Corps members which had to be retained, and the challenge for the architects was to produce an upscale development whilst working around the many ecclesiastical features that had to be retained. 18
Fortunately, the developers had a great architect in Mick Morris, whose vision for the building was a vertical split from east to west giving three bedroom town houses, whilst at each end the ‘Bell Tower’ and the ‘Font End’ provided an opportunity to create two completely unique properties. On day one of the build, with the pews still in place, a digger drove through the double doors and as workmen lifted the pews aside and began to dig a trench for the foundations for the dividing walls, I could not help but imagine what the Regimental Sergeant Major would have had to say. The pews were collected by a specialist joinery firm and turned into front and rear doors, whilst the original doors were all retained. The end result has been a fantastic and everpopular development which has been converted into superb family homes with parking and gardens, most houses having a sea view from the top floors across the seafront to the Solent. Grand Division Row is well kept and maintained, with a building that otherwise could so easily have stood becoming more unkempt and dilapidated, and would doubtless put a smile on the RSM’s face.
EXETER ROAD, SOUTHSEA - £500,000 q This four bedroom semi-detached house is located in a highly requested residential area within a short walk of Canoe Lake and Southsea seafront. Local schooling, shops and transport facilities will also be found nearby, making this an ideal family home not to be missed. Approached via a gated entrance with driveway parking and featuring over 1,460 sq ft of accommodation, the traditional layout comprises a reception hall, front living room, study/family room, dining room with double doors to a fitted kitchen, separate utility room and cloakroom on
p LOMBARD STREET, OLD PORTSMOUTH - £525,000 This attractive Grade II* Listed period two bedroom corner house is located in one of the most delightful rows of properties in the Old Portsmouth Conservation area. Historically, the property, amongst other uses, was formerly an ale-house known as ’The Ruby’ which dated back to the 16th Century with Tudor features in the cellar. The existing house dates back to the late 17th Century with unusual Dutch gables designed by Dutch engineers who added the top floor. The accommodation comprises a split level entrance hall, ‘L’ shaped living room with double aspect sash windows, various cupboards, a downstairs cloakroom, and an ‘L’ shaped modern kitchen/diner with direct access to a small courtyard. Stairs lead down to the original beer cellar (with limited head height). The first floor has a double bedroom, fitted wardrobes to the landing and a sun terrace (which is over the kitchen extension) with stairs to another floor with bedroom, ensuite shower room and a further separate shower room.
the ground floor plus four (two double & two single) bedrooms and family bathroom with separate shower cubicle on the first floor. Externally there is a gated side entrance leading to an enclosed westerly facing rear garden with shed. The house also benefits from gas fired central heating, double glazing and a security system.

LET’S GET TOGETHER John Worsey
T
his month's general election feels to many like a foregone conclusion - a far cry from last June, which brought two seismic shocks to Britain. Few foresaw the vote to leave the European Union. Fewer still would have predicted the assassination of an MP on the streets of her constituency. A year on, Brexit and its fallout still dominate the headlines and political agenda. The murder of Labour MP Jo Cox, known for her humanitarian work and internationalist worldview, has been less frequently discussed. The two are not linked, of course. Cox’s killer is a neo-Nazi whose dark motives are unconnected to reality as perceived by either EU ‘Leavers’ or ‘Remainers’. Most Leave voters I know recognise the same real problems I do - a lack of affordable housing and well-paid work; challenges to public health and social care. I consider the roots of those issues to be here, at home in Britain. Leavers I meet feel that the EU is, at best, an unaffordable burden or, at worst, undermining Britain’s ability to govern in its own interest. But we have much common ground. Sadly, since the referendum, accusations of racism and treachery have been flung around from each side of the debate. Whatever your views, I’d like to believe that the vast majority of us want the same thing - a Britain we can be proud of, with strong communities united by the belief that our collective future will ultimately be better than the past. That’s why I was delighted recently to speak with Jodie Coles. Jodie is organising The Great Get Together 24
Southsea, which is part of a nationwide initiative put together by The Jo Cox Foundation, The Big Lunch, and a host of community groups. It’s a community picnic designed not just to celebrate the life of Jo Cox, but to bring communities together, so we can overcome the divisive rhetoric of the past year. As Cox herself once said, “We have far more in common than that which divides us.” “It feels like the UK has never felt less welcoming,” Jodie explained. “I wanted to do something positive. The Great Get Together is an opportunity to get to know your neighbours, meet people you’ve not met before and come together as a community to support one another.” Jodie and her small team are all volunteers. She told me, “I work in a corporate world, so it’s important for my own balance to do something community minded and try to help people.” You are encouraged to bring your own picnic to The Great Get Together, where there will be a host of entertainment. There is a line-up of bands and a DJ, headlined by popular local act Blackfoot Circle. Kids will be able to learn football and circus skills, and try out musical instruments. The Great Get Together Southsea takes place at Canoe Lake Green, from 12noon 4pm, on Saturday 17th June. It’s free to attend, but if you’d like to donate towards the cost of making it happen, you can do so at gofundme.com/great-get-together-southsea. Most people accept the future may be challenging, but people like Jodie Coles are doing their bit to help us look forward, with optimism, together.

VICTORIOUS FESTIVAL SPOTLIGHT Southsea Lifestyle’s Emma Beatty, talks to KT Tunstall and Tom Walker ahead of their performances at this year’s Victorious Festival in August. For tickets and details go to: www.victoriousfestival.co.uk
S
cottish singer/songwriter KT Tunstall emerged in 2004 with her folk-rock album Eye To The Telescope. She has released four critically acclaimed albums since; Drastic Fantastic (2007), Tiger Suit (2010), and Invisible Empire // Crescent Moon (2013). After her most recent album, KIN, out last September, she’s back in the UK on tour – gearing up for her performance at our own Victorious Festival in August. We spoke to her in her dressing room in Guildford. Her rich mezzo voice with lilting Scottish accent has a tiny hint of rasp. She’s very philosophical and articulate, great to chat to – full of ideas.
SL: Since you first performed at Glastonbury in 2005, you must’ve learnt a lot about festivals. You’ve got a knack for communicating with a live audience. KTT: Festivals are the highlight of my touring year – my sound just works in that setting. I love getting the crowd on their feet, sweating, jumping, letting their hair down. We Brits have a really stubborn determination to enjoy ourselves – even in the mud and rain. I just love the celebratory atmosphere. 26
I’ve got lots of material to choose from too; start off with the uplifting stuff [she’s got five albums to choose from]. I love waiting to see the audience recognise the chorus and all join in. Maybe a ballad at the end, You need to organise a festival like a wedding though – it’s an art, planning it just so, making sure people enjoy themselves seamlessly. I shout out to all festival organisers. It’s bloody hard work SL: You’re famous for your rich vocal range. How do you keep your voice in shape? KTT: I had some amazing vocal coaching years back from Stevie Vann Lange (the singer of the Bodyform ads no less). Singing
and storytelling are what I’ve always done, everything else comes out of that. SL: What are you working on now? KTT: I’ve been over in California for two years, working for the film industry. I’ve written film scores for ‘Bad Moms’, ‘The Smurfs’, and have just finished the music for ‘Three Generations’ a film about gender identity starring Elle Fanning and Naomi Watts. It’s a great movie; I love film. I’m a workaholic; it’s 24/7 for me, not 9-5. Venice Beach is full of creative people. But I can be very lazy sometimes. My favourite escape is just to go the cinema on my own – escape in
the storytelling, lose myself in the big screen. SL: Any new songs? KTT: Unexpectedly, yes. I didn’t expect to write any songs – I’ve been so busy on tour and writing for film, but something about Venice Beach inspired me. So many great artists have come out of there – it’s the home of the big rock song. You can’t help but be a bit inspired. This new song just came by itself, I’m just finishing it.
– hummingbirds, mountains, palm trees. Don’t overthink things. Where I live in Venice Beach it’s just gorgeous, like a kind of paradise. Simplicity is the thing. SL: What makes you angry? KTT: Meanness, unkindness – it’s a waste of time. SL: What makes a good festival? KTT: Good booze, good food, good music and good bogs – the four pillars of any festival.
KTT: Just the simple stuff: nature
SL: And, your top three things to take to a festival: KTT: bog roll, shades, glitter.
looking forward to seeing Elbow play at Victorious – I’m a fan. I Love festivals – I’ve been going to loads since I was 17; as soon as I could drive. My
first was Wakestock on the Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales, a great crowd of us drove down. It was half wakeboarding/ half music. Loved it – even got into wakeboarding.
SL: What makes you happy?
S
inger/Songwriter Tom Walker is just 23 and his effortlessly soulful selfpenned ballads mix hip-hop with blues, and “a splash of reggae”. We asked him if he’s looking forward to coming down to Southsea for Victorious this summer. SL: Have you got lots of festival appearances this year? TW: Not so many, I did loads last year, so I’m really trying to find the time to finish my latest album. [He’s just released the EP recording ‘Blessings’]. But I’ve picked out a few special ones – Bestival, an acoustic session at Glastonbury – and Victorious. I’ve not played in Portsmouth before. I’m really
27
SL: Do you know Portsmouth? TW: No, I’m originally from a little Cheshire village, Chelford, near Macclesfield, although my family are from Scotland. But I live in Crouch End, now, in London – in a flatshare with seven others. We have a great laugh – when I get time to be home, I’m travelling so much these days. SL: Are you surprised by how your career has taken off? TW: I’m doing alright. I’ve been busy since my debut single two years ago, I’ve not stopped. I even made my US TV debut on NBC’s Today Show as Artist of the Month recently. I was a bit nervous as I’d hardly done any TV before but it was OK. I’ve had a few other sidelines; I was a chef (and not much good at that), and a photobooth operative (helping people put on funny wigs in a novelty photos of wedding and
events). But music is my thing. SL: Do you write on your own? TW: I studied songwriting at the London College of Contemporary Music, and it’s something I’d always done, since I was 12. I’ve always played the guitar and drums I love jamming with my mates too. I can write anywhere – in my bedroom. I used to spend ages on the computer deciding which snare drum to use. Sometimes you have an idea. “Just you and I” has got 15 million hits on Spotify now – it’s crazy. It was written after my aunt passed away. Most of my songs are stories from my life, or just sparked by things I’ve seen – I go to a lot of cities and see homelessness and poverty, or little details. But some are flights of fancy, such as ‘Play dead’ about imagining what I’d do if there was a Zombie Apocalypse.
SL: You’re a true singer/ songwriter with such a distinctive voice. TW: I have to use a special vaporiser with special water to keep it going, and I studied music at college. But you’ve got to party a bit. I love a beer on tour. The beer in Germany on tour was amazing. SL: What makes you angry? TW: People talking preachy politics who don’t know what they’re on about. Especially at parties. SL: What makes you happy? TW: Right now, it’s getting home to Crouch End. After touring in the US and Europe, it’s just nice to get back to people you know, and sleep in your own bed. CULTURE VULTURE Emma Beatty
H
ave you seen the giant floating wooden egg bobbing about in the canal in Gunwharf, just opposite Strada? It’s a sculpture/artist’s studio, and normally sits on Beaulieu River on the Exbury Estate. The artist, Stephen Turner, developed it as both a sculpture and a place to stay, exploring ideas of sustainability. He lived there for a year – so it’s fully inhabitable with bathroom and hammock. You can go inside it this month, from 16-18 June or 21-25 June. An accompanying exhibition of Turner’s work is at Aspex Gallery nearby.
No.6 Cinema is also heading out on tour, popping up on Southsea Common in a sleek movie trailer on 17 June (somewhere along Serpentine Road). It will be huge, apparently, so you won’t miss it. There’ll be four screenings. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is at 5pm, and Jaws is at 8pm. Pie and Vinyl will be on hand to provide food. Films and pies – book ahead! This is all part of Portsmouth Festivities, a celebration of arts and culture in some 30 locations round the city. The Maggini Quartet, one of the finest British string quartets, play an opening Gala at the Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral, 16 June, with pieces by Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann. Portsmouth Philharmonia play music by Parry and the last movement of Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony on 17 June, 7.30pm, at St John’s Catholic Cathedral with Portsmouth Chorus, and St John’s Roman Catholic 30
Cathedral School Choir. On the same Sunday (17th), there’s a semi-staged performance of Mascagni’s Sicilian opera Cavalleria Rusticana at the New Theatre Royal, 7.30pm. This is pure Italian opera at its most Italian, in a tale of betrayal and revenge. The dramatic Easter Hymn (famously used in closing sequences of The Godfather Part III ) will surely be familiar. That very same day— for junior Culture Vultures—Ballet Theatre UK’s version of Alice in Wonderland is at the Kings Theatre, 17 June, 2pm and 6pm. Artistic Director Christopher Moore has created a new piece with young audiences in mind. The Royal Ballet did a new version of Alice in Wonderland recently, so it will be interesting to compare the two – the surreal transformations and bizarre characters translate well into dance. Finally, Jack House Gallery on Portsmouth High Street has a coup – a new show of works by artist Amartey Golding who has been working with the gallery for some time. This is a full showing of his Gabosia series a group of drypoint prints he’s been working on since 2013. These strange dense narrative images seem to tell some complex tale. They are inspired by ‘the mysterious circumstances’ surrounding the artist’s death—a way of thinking about how we tell stories and weave connections to provide solace. Some of the faces might be familiar, as Golding finds inspiration by Googling famous faces. 10 June-8th July.
FILM
H
Alien: Covenant UK 2017 Director: Ridley Scott Cert 15
ollywood seems to be going through quite a scifi phase at the moment, ie Arrival, Passengers, Interstellar etc, but Ridley Scott’s original sci-fi slasher dates back to 1978 - thirty-eight years ago. I remember going to see it in New York, without any hype or prior knowledge about it, and it blew everyone away! The first of the real slasher/gore fests. It had ‘the shock of the new’ with bells on.
Thirty-eight years later and we are now watching the latest ‘franchise’ instalment - Alien: Covenant in which the colonising/terraforming craft ‘Covenant’ gets diverted from its purpose by a strange radio transmission and goes to investigate. Covenant follows on Scott’s Prometheus (2012) and references from that film abound.
It has also been hailed as a return to the original format, which placed the Xenomorphs as the main spectacle, rather than following the progress of Ripley in Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection (don’t even mention the Alien vs. Predator spin offs). So the Alien franchise has a long pedigree, lots of fans and high expectations Does it deliver? Not really. Alien: Covenant is a big budget production, full of huge, epic sets and huge, epic themes as set out in Prometheus. It is a monster of a movie, but when it first burst out of our collective chests all those years ago it had that ‘wow’ factor. That has diminished and we are now asked to think more than scream; and in space no one can hear you think.

SHOP LOCAL - IT’S A WAY OF LIFE
T
he Southsea lifestyle can be summed up by its open space, independent shops and market culture, all set against the backdrop of the seafront’s historic castle. With shopping locally imbedded at its heart - it really is a way of life. Southsea cuisine is not just sustenance, but a celebration of the local goods. From café culture, supporting quick stops before work, the lunch time break out, or the after-work winddown, to the night time gastronomy; all play host to a myriad of local ingredients and produce. Not forgetting the local food offerings at the markets, from sweet treats, local street food delicacies and the delicious produce of Hampshire’s farmers.
As thoughts turn to leisure time, nowhere is the Southsea lifestyle more evident than in the retail offering. While away the hours milling around the outdoor markets and boutique shops. The independent nature of the area means that you can slow your pace, take your time, experience the distinct customer service and find that truly unique discovery.
That’s not to say that Southsea is on a ‘go slow’. For those with a ‘shop till you drop’ mentality there’s a diverse range of offerings. High end jewellery, bespoke shoes and accessories, vintage and pre-loved clothing, as well as high street brands, Southsea offers it all. If you have the stamina then your weekend could be a shopping whirlwind! For those that live, work and play in Southsea, shopping locally has a direct connection to shaping Southsea’s environment, defining its 32
look and feel, supporting business, creating jobs and attracting footfall around the area.

BIRTHSTONE OF THE MONTH: MOONSTONE
M
oonstone is one of the three birthstones for the month of June. The others are pearl and alexandrite. The name moonstone derived from its colour and was believed to shift appearance with the phases of the moon.
The most common moonstone comes from the mineral adularia, named for an early mining site near Mt. Adular in Switzerland that supplied this gem. This site also birthed the term adularescence, which refers to the stone’s milky glow, like
34
moonlight floating on water. Moonstone is composed of microscopic layers of feldspar that scatter light to cause this billowy effect of adularescence.
The finest moonstones are found in Sri Lankan mines. These sources of high quality moonstones have become extremely rare. Moonstones are also found in India and America, which can be brown, green, and orange in colour. These are more abundant and affordably priced than their classical blue counterparts.
The moonstone is closely associated with lunar magic and mystery. It is believed to have calming, balancing energies and attune to natural biological rhythms. It acts as a crystal for fertility by igniting passion in new lovers and reuniting old.

THE MISSING YEARS Joe Cushnan
I
have always liked mysteries in books and films, The Lady Vanishes and The Man Who Never Was, to name two favourites. In recent history, the disappearances of Lord Lucan and the racehorse Shergar are still unsolved. Some puzzles are never solved. My own family, decades on, is still trying to resolve a more personal mystery. I am talking about A Father Vanishes and The Father Who Never Was - a man who was there one day and then never seen again by his family and friends. In 1960, my father, John Cushnan, left our Belfast home, his wife and seven young children and c o m p l e t e l y vanished. We never heard news of him again until July 1982, when we My father, John Cushnan, were told he had circa 1957, at 32, died in Clapham, 3 years before he left Belfast London. And there’s the challenge – twenty-two missing years. Why did he leave? What direction did his life take? He left at 35 and died at 57. I went to my father’s funeral and to the wake afterwards at The Rose and Crown in Clapham. It was an odd occasion. My father was a stranger to me. Everyone in the pub talked fondly of John. It emerged that he had changed his name to John Kelly and he’d invented a back story about how he was from Derry.
At the wake, someone gave me some letters, photographs, his old wallet and other small mementos, meagre possessions at the time, but useful clues as I now research his life after 1960. 36
Many mourners shook my hand and one asked: “Are you the son in the navy?” I explained that no one in our family was in the navy. The mourner went on to say that he believed John had a son who joined the Royal Navy in Portsmouth.
Unknown boy from the 1970s – possible link to Portsmouth
Unknown woman from the 1970s – possible link to Portsmouth
So, as I connect the dots in this story, I consider a possible link between the navy and one of the photographs I was given. Is this young boy my father’s son, my unknown half-brother, and did he join the Royal Navy in later years? The boy and the woman could have connections to the Portsmouth area in the 1970s and I would be very grateful for any assistance in identifying them to help solve the mystery of my father’s missing years. This is a personal quest to complete a family jigsaw puzzle. At times it is quite emotional as I uncover another piece of information. I have a collection of facts, clues, assumptions and questions and I am convinced there is much more waiting to be discovered. I know where my father started and I know where his life ended. Somewhere in the missing years, Portsmouth and the Royal Navy might have been part of his story. Fingers crossed, I hope some readers can help. I am happy to be contacted via joecushnan@aol.com

THE NELSON CONSORT
N
amed after Admiral Lord Nelson, whose ship HMS Victory is in dry dock in Portsmouth, the Nelson Consort is an eight-voice chamber choir dedicated to promoting music for unaccompanied voices, drawing attention to lesser-known repertoire whilst also performing more familiar works to a very high standard.
The Nelson Consort has established itself as one of the area’s foremost chamber choirs. The choir has received particular praise for their performance of Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo’s Ubi caritas, and has given the world premieres of James Dunlop’s Windrush, William Drakett’s arrangement of Steal Away, and June Clark’s Run, shepherds, run, all of which were written for and dedicated to The Nelson Consort. In 2015, the choir took part in the Botley Music Festival, and performed as part of the 2016 Portsmouth Festivities.

Since its founding in 2014 by director Oliver Hancock, the choir has forged a strong relationship with St George’s Church, Portsmouth. Known as the Shipwrights’ church – having been built by 15 shipwrights from the dockyard – the foundation stone was laid on a May morning in 1753. It was badly damaged during WWII and has undergone considerable restoration. It’s a beautiful Georgian building, with the perfect acoustic for chamber music. Our concert is at St George’s Church at 7.30pm on 17th June . Tickets are £10 (£8 concessions) and are available on the door or through Eventbrite.com. Titled ‘A Spotless Rose’, the concert programme includes various texts with a summer horticulture tint: I praise the tender flower by Gerald Finzi, movements from the ‘Rose cycle’ by Paul Mealor (of Royal wedding fame), A spotless rose by Herbert Howells, and many more. HOLMES FEST WILL CELEBRATE ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE IN PORTSMOUTH THIS JUNE
T
he writers and musicians of Portsmouth are planning a Holmes Fest at the Square Tower on Wednesday 28th June. The night will
celebrate the arrival in Portsmouth in the year 1882 of one of its most famous residents, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who created legendary super-sleuth Sherlock Holmes while living in the seaside town of Southsea.
Specially-penned stories by local authors will celebrate Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes, murder, mystery, detective fiction, Victorian England and, of course, Portsmouth. Music hall songs will be performed by local entertainers – and Dr Lighthouse will project Victorian film footage on the walls of the ancient tower. The Gosport Steampunk Society invite you to take
48
part in duelling matches with a difference – and you can choose your own poison for the perfect murder thanks to local artist James Waterfield. And if you want to dress up, there'll also be a prize for the Best Dressed Victorian! Doors open at 6.30pm, with performances beginning at 7pm sharp. Refreshments will be available.
Tickets are £7.50 and are available from https://www.wegottickets.com/event/401304 or from Matt on 07985053777. You can find out more on www.facebook.com/ HolmesFest2017. Prepare to be dazzled by local creative talent!
