f you are ever find life confusing and struggle to make decisions, then I have news for you. Making the perfect decision is a myth! Of course some choices are best based upon all the facts that are available to us, but, according to doctors, very often rather than pontificating for hours or days, it’s far better for our mental health to follow the advice of a popular sportswear company and ‘Just do it’.

This issue gives you even more choices or decisions to make. Just looking at the What’s On section: you will see numerous events that make the most of the summer, from champagne at Southsea Castle, to a wildlife watch on the beach (Cumberland Natural History Museum). And just to add to your confusion, we highlight many of the coffee shops on Southsea’s high streets ( p.14). Whatever you decide to do, have a wonderful July. Kevin John Dean

IT’S TIME FOR A CHANGE!

I’

Neil Maxwell

ve written before about how frustrating the archaic legal process, surrounding house transactions has become. It is amazing that apart from some additional bureaucratic measures, nothing has changed in twenty years, despite the introduction of electronic technology

The only attempt, with the introduction of Home Information Packs (HIPS), ended in 2011. Looking back it may well have been because they were ahead of their time, but with clients having to stump up £400 up front for each HIP, you were guaranteed motivated vendors.

process. It wouldn’t take weeks for the surveyor to book an appointment, find works, and then both parties having to enter into a lengthy and testing renegotiation process. At present, it is taking the City Council thirty days to turn round property search information and this is having a huge impact on transaction times despite the volume of sales decreasing in the last two years. Having this information from day one could mean that the legal conveyance time would reduce by up to a third.

Home Information Packs, had they been fully implemented, were meant to contain every piece of information you would require in order to decide on whether to proceed with a purchase and to speed up the legal conveyancing process.

Throughout the house-selling process, I cannot stress the importance of using a local solicitor. So many chains are being held up and transactions lost by the online call centre processing teams who you can rarely get hold of and leave a myriad of unreturned phone calls and emails in their wake.

From survey to searches, it was going to be a one stop shop, and from the vendor’s point of view, any remedial works that would inevitably come to light from the home condition report would be allowed for as part of the offer

So if we do reach a point were political parties are looking for new manifesto ideas, this wouldn’t be a bad place to start, coupled with a review of George Osborne’s stamp duty changes that have driven down transactions by a third.

NATURAL ALTERNATIVES FOR THE HAY FEVER SEASON

t’s that time of year again when all the beautiful blossoms are opening, and gardens and our senses are filled with a riot of colour.

But please spare a thought for those who suffer from debilitating hay fever, it can be an uncomfortable time for them. Did you know that some of our native ‘weeds’ and wildflowers may be able to help?

year is the elderflower (sambucus nigra) The quercetin*** in elderflower is a natural antihistamine; therefore, it may help to alleviate hay fever.

Studies have shown that stinging nettles (urtica dioica) have an antihistamine* and antiinflammatory** effect which may aid those with hay fever symptoms. You can pick the new light green tips (wearing gloves) and make a nice green tea to be drunk at least three times a day to help ward off itchy eyes, coughing and sneezing.

Again, a simple tea can be made from the blossoms or you may want to mix it with the nettle to give you a more interesting brew. Adding local honey to taste will also help with hay fever, as it is thought that the local pollen it contains will help to desensitise you to pollen. A couple of precautions: If you are currently taking any medications, please check with your local herbalist that there are no interactions or contraindications before using herbs.

Another helpful plant found at this time of

Also before picking herbs it is advisable to take a photo identification book and if unsure please don’t pick.

FEELING HOT, HOTWALLS!

o, happy first birthday to the Hotwalls Studios. This month, we’ll find out whether Portsmouth’s bid to become City of Culture 2021 has been successful. Whatever the outcome, it’s a pleasure to see this unique community of artists thriving. In this issue, we profile the diverse creatives

building their businesses in Old Portsmouth’s arches. I spoke to Facilities Manager Chrissie McQueen about how year one has gone and what’s next. “For a lot of the artists,” she explained, “this is their first professional venture. It’s been an interesting journey, finding the balance between making work Photo: Claire Sambrook

and promoting themselves.” Portsmouth City Council has three ambitious goals for the Hotwalls: increasing footfall into the area, creating jobs, and developing a thriving cultural quarter. With around 71,000 visitors to the Studios and Canteen in the past year,

everything is on track. In year two, Chrissie told me, the focus will be on creative development. “It’s all about the artists and the quality of their work. Also, we’ll look at developing use of the Round Tower - perhaps for workshops and exhibitions - and the parade ground - possibly for markets and performing artists.” She has relished being part of it. “I love the depth of different artists. Each studio has its own look and personality. It’s been a real joy to meet these people and see what they can do.” From the Mary Rose Museum to Victorious Festival, Chrissie is right to say “we’re putting Portsmouth on the map.” I also agree it’s a big strength that “Portsmouth is very loyal. People are behind anything produced here.” In the years ahead, that Pompey pride may make all the difference for our creative entrepreneurs.

REFLECTIONS OF A SOUTHSEA LAWYER Michael Rowland, a solicitor specialising in commercial law at Large & Gibson solicitors

C

oming from a large law firm based in an ‘out of town’ business park, one of the attractions of joining a smaller practice, Large & Gibson, based in the heart of Southsea was the opportunity to explore the area, even if it was only a quick stroll along the sea front during my lunch hour. Unfortunately, those opportunities have dwindled over the last few years. Following an accident eleven years ago, my mother needed ever increasing care and support. This meant that most of my life outside the office was taken up with travelling to and from her home in London to visit hospitals or arrange care for her.

We took a stroll along the seafront and reached Southsea Castle. The children asked if they could go inside. I was reluctant, as my recollection, from past visits some time ago, was that there was not much inside and it was damp and uninviting. I could not have been more wrong. The children were enthralled by the talks given by the guide in full Tudor outfit about the history of the castle and particularly enjoyed the activities room, where they could dress up in costumes and sit on the throne.

Sadly she passed away towards the end of last year, but it has given me a chance to start getting my own life back on track. I was recently reminded of what an interesting place Southsea is to live and work in, when my best friend brought his family for a day out in Southsea. I came up with several possibilities for the perfect day, but, as the weather was sunny, they opted for a picnic on the beach. We walked through the town and I began to recall how many of the different properties I had been involved with over the years, whether buying or selling, leasing or purchasing the business, many of which, I was pleased to see, are still thriving. We spent a few pleasant hours on the beach and the children were fascinated watching the boats a and skimming stones across the water. 22

Kevin is a tough and hard working coach who expects the best from all his students, making the academy one of the most prolific and strongly educated in the UK. You have an extensive children’s summer programme, do some children come for the day? Our summer programme, includes full and half days of not just tennis but all sorts of sports. Our performance programme has intensive days too, and we have sessions for tots throughout the 8 weeks. We are open to help any adults too; if you would like a day full of tennis and fitness, we can accommodate that too just ask! Do any of the children go on to win tournaments locally or further afield? Tournaments can be a great way of telling what standard you have reached and help push you on with your game, some people love he challenge and some like to join our leagues for the fun and fitness it brings. Tournaments are not for everyone, but tennis should be enjoyed whatever you decide. One of the great things about the game is that it is loved all over the world; you can enter tournaments from Bournemouth to Scotland or just play a game in the local park in Spain. Our children do just that: they’re quite international players! In fact some of our players have even gone on to colleges and universities in the USA! How about adults, if they haven’t played for a long time, how can they get started again? For the adults that want to get back into tennis, we offer beginner/refresher courses. It’s a little like riding a bike but its the fitness level that you can really feel get better every session. Will you be going to Wimbledon this year? One year after opening, the old arches are buzzing with arty activity. Go celebrate, meet the artists and see what’s been happening in the past 12 months. (I love the shop that sells the cushions made out of Royal Navy’s sailor’s collars, using the same ribbon used by the Navy).

Jack House Gallery in Old Portsmouth has an eclectic summer show from the I HEART ART collective (29 July-19 August). This artists group met in the 90s when its members were studying

at

the

University

of

Portsmouth, back when it was still taught in the John Pounds building in the heart of Portsea—then a place of warren-like studio spaces whose atmosphere ‘invited free thinking and artistic risk-taking’. The group reunite for shows bringing some of that spirit back together. They are a broad range of talents—painting, drawing, installation, film and performance. Meanwhile, down in Aspex Gallery in Gunwharf, you can see the work produced by another collective in Trawl, a celebration of Portsmouth’s long relationship with the sea, bringing local people together to share stories in the tradition of net-making in a project created by Croshare, with artists Sharon Bennett and Tom Jeram-West. Using basic crochet skills, they crocheted a large fishing net, and filled it with made items as well as

Ockham’s Razor

Back indoors, there’s plenty happening in our theatres and galleries. Dance fans should look out for Tipping Point at The New Theatre Royal (2526 July). Aerial theatre group Ockham’s Razor’s new show was crowned winner of the Circus Award at the last year’s Edinburgh Festival. It’s set in the round with five performers transforming metal poles in bizarre ways— balanced on fingertips, hung from the roof, swung, lashed, climbed up and clung to; the action ‘veering from catastrophe to mastery’. Read more about the group on page 42.

those retrieved from the shoreline. It’s shown alongside the Everything comes from the Egg exhibition as discussed last month (til 3 Sep) to accompany Stephen Turner’s Exbury Egg (giant wooden egg sculpture floating in the canal outside). There are drawings inspired by nature: observational studies on discarded packaging using inks produced from oak galls; and small eggshaped sculptures made from dove feathers, mosses, shells, crab carapace and other natural materials. 27

BAGS OF IDEAS

f you are looking for the perfect beach bag, or casual bag, then check out the Beach Bunnies’ collection.

Portsmouth twin sisters, Jani and Jo, love taking holidays, often together. “Part of the fun of getting ready for a holiday is to shop for items to pack for the trip, said Jani, “but we were always disappointed with the choice of beach bags and accessories available, and often we holiday in winter to sunnier climes, but it is impossible to get a great beach bag at that time of year.” So in 2016, the twins decided to design their own range. “We always wanted to do something creative together, especially with our design backgrounds, and so our business grew from a conversation on holiday, around a pool”. The Beach Bunnies’ bags come in two sizes and have matching accessories to colour co-ordinate with swimwear. For people of all ages they are

stylish enough to take you from the beach to town. In fact, the bags are so fabulous, customers often use them all year round. Their range is now stocked in boutiques and a few independent department stores throughout the UK. They also host beach parties, where you can get all your friends together, have a few cocktails and shop all the collection in your home. Great fun. Let them know if you are interested.

JULY BIRTHSTONE - RUBY

he name ruby comes from the word rebeus, the Latin word for red. The ruby gets its vibrant colour from the element chromium and is a variety of the mineral corundum. All other colours of gem quality corundum are known as sapphire. The finest ruby material is created in the Mogok Valley in Burma. These gemstones are famous for their deep blood red colour with purplish hues. Tough and durable, ruby measures 9 on the Mohs scale with diamond

being the only harder natural gemstone. Due to its colour, the deep blood-red has been associated with the life force and vitality of blood. It is believed to amplify energy, heighten awareness, and promote courage as well as bringing success in wealth, love, and battle.

his August, the New Theatre Royal is launching its new performance space, a 60-seat studio theatre created on the

main stage. The opening event in this new creative space is a local production of The Hound of the Baskervilles - but not as the author intended! Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous novel is taken in hand and given a fondly farcical overhaul in this caper through London, Dartmoor, and back to Baker Street! Torchlight Mysteries, fresh from three sell-

38

out productions of the works of Agatha Christie, presents this version devised and written by Steven Canny and John Nicholson, in which three actors play all the parts in a clever comedy, that serves up the original plot of this treasured story as you are unlikely to have seen it before. Torchlight is a company that has recently specialised in presenting pieces of theatre in Heritage buildings, most notably with their Christie productions at Wymering Manor, Portsmouth’s oldest home. Their

immersive approach has turned the drawing room at the old manor into the cosy crime world of Miss Christie, in which audiences are invited to sit and watch stylish productions of the works of the Queen of Crime herself. Their next offering at Wymering is a new production of Murder at Martindale Manor in October. Information on all their productions and events can be found through www.torchlightmysteries.com Before they return with a new production to the old manor, they will be bringing their keen eye for a thoroughly entertaining mystery to the New Theatre Royal, and demonstrating the creative versatility of the new studio space with this high-energy, far-fetched production of The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Company founder Jonathan Fost says, “We are very proud to be performing this great version in the NTR’s new studio space, and given the opportunity to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the publishing of A Study in Scarlet, Doyle’s first Sherlock Holmes story, which was written here in Portsmouth.” Tickets for The Hound of the Baskervilles (30th Aug-2nd Sept) available from the New Theatre Royal box office on 023 9264 900 or at newtheatreroyal.com, and for Murder at Martindale Manor (11th-20th October) at torchlightmysteries.com This version of The Hound of the Baskervilles is an amateur production by arrangement with Nick Hern Books.

The Mummy USA 2017 Director: Alex Kurtzman Cert 15 87mins

here is something very nasty and very evil in the deserts of Northern Iran/ Mesopotamia - and it is determined to rise again and spread its evil all over the world. It heads for the streets of London, causing mayhem with a sacrificial knife which is the key to the after-life. Luckily enough, we have Tom Cruise: America’s Golden Boy to sort it all out and save us. I’m sure that the writers couldn’t have possibly have known about the recent attacks in London, but can it really be a coincidence that the really, really evil mummy (played by Sophia Boutella) is awakened and released by the reckless

and selfish US Special Forces fella? They are not above linking the fundamentalist occupation of a village - where the really, really evil mummy is buried. But the re-boot of a very popular ‘franchise’ series

which has been around since the days of Boris Karloff and the 1930s as a vehicle for American foreign policy? Am I reading too much into it? Perhaps - but does anyone take for granted what America tells us anymore? ‘Bombed’ at the box office - ridiculous ending, uncomfortable viewing.

TIPPING POINT Joe Gorecki

W

ith the help of several long metal poles, Ockham’s Razor and their show Tipping Point have been taking acrobatics firmly out of circus tents and into theatres around the country, blending it with visual theatre for a memorable performance. We recently spoke with the show’s co-director Charlotte Mooney about it.

How does the acrobatics in Tipping Point differ from what you might see in a circus? It’s called contemporary circus and it takes a lot of the traditional movement of the circus while reinterpreting it in a new way. This show is set in the round, so the audience sits quite close and there are five performers with five very long metal poles. Throughout the show, they explore everything these poles can possibly do. The thing people haven’t seen before is the invention in it and the fun, alongside some very high acrobatic prowess. But within it there’s also an element of narrative, you have this feeling of seeing the relationship between the performers throughout the hour performance. Where did the idea for the poles come from? We had wanted for a long while to do a show ‘in the round’ because this is where the circus comes from and it’s a very different experience when you’re sitting across from an audience member. And then we thought what would be interesting aesthetically to have with the circle. These big poles, they’re just so great as they cut it aesthetically but they’re also exciting as well as visually pleasing. 42

Having it so simple, there’s so much you can do with it and it’s really gratifying. The name of the company is Ockham’s Razor: the theory is if you have two ways of doing something, go for the simplest. Has the production changed much since its premiere? Yes, its evolved massively. We started showing it in Autumn 2015 and it’s been touring since with the original cast of five. Every time they come to it, it does change…People will have found additional stories and new things which

really make it constantly come to life. Sometimes it will be little nuances in relationships that change, but they’ll have a big impact. Have you ever fallen off? Yeah! Never in a performance because it gets to a point where what you’re doing is just so drilled into you, but in rehearsals people certainly have: when trying new things, you need to take that risk as much as possible. It’s funny, as so much of circus is about playing with risk and danger, but if you see something where somebody is doing something genuinely risky, you can really clock it as an audience and it is unnerving to watch: there’s a real fine line. See TIPPING POINT Tue 25 or Wed 26 Jul 7.30pm Tickets: £16.50, Student £10 New Theatre Royal 20-24 Guildhall Walk, Portsmouth, PO1 2DD 43

TALKING: A MODERN THERAPY Maria Dantas-Martins

W

e may hide it well, but so many

In the 20th century, Freud’s medical background,

of us suffer from self-doubt,

debates with colleagues, philosophers and intellectuals from different fields, created new psychological approaches where psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and all forms of counselling took their place. Ever since, they have been helping to diminish sufferings, limit discomfort, solve and treat problems, clarify doubts, increase self-esteem, and promote better relationships and integration into society.

anxiety

and

depression

at

different points in our lives. These issues can often lead to relationship problems or difficulties with our children. Prescribed medicines can sometimes help in the short term, but very often a much simpler and more natural solution can

be found in simply talking about our problems with a professional therapist. Counselling or psychoanalysis conjures up images of someone lying on a leather couch in a state of despair or self-obsession. The contemporary ‘talking cure’ is very different, relaxed, informal and supportive. The ‘talking cure’ is an act of catharsis bringing to life, thoughts, and feelings, free from restraint, prejudice or judgement, and allowing a sense of security, relaxation and freedom. The therapist assists and cares, combining ethics and method. Each session allows possibilities for surprises and constructions towards new perspectives. It is a practice where by using our own words we can find ourselves and have an encounter with what determines the problem. When working with children this process might enable them to feel secure, to build better relationships with their parents or to help with difficulties at school. The attention to infancy and early intervention, where required or needed, could resolve effectively problems which would be much more difficult to achieve when they are adults. 44

Ultimately psychoanalysis is a talking method where listening to what the clients are saying is paramount, and a major way to allow them to progress. We are embraced by language, as it is through language that we show what we are. Whatever issues you may have in your life, talking is a process of communication, treatment, discovery and surprise, leading to a sense of relief and comfort. That’s life! Maria Dantas-Martins is presently developing a career in Counselling, Psychoanalysis, Psychotherapy, Child Care and Education. She lives in Southsea with her English partner.
