’m sure I’m not the only person who feels a bit blue at the end of summer; a time to return to normality, off with the T-shirt and shorts, and into something more formal. The children are back to school, the days are getting shorter and the boiler needs servicing.
I’m pleased to say this issue has lots of positive things to look forward to as we move into autumn. Tara Knight talks about why interesting, tasty food shouldn’t just be something reserved for eating out (p.36). In fact, we’ve got food well-covered in this issue and there’s chance to win top of the range cookware from Kitchenlab (p.44). Walter Dall’Omo has some top tips for autumnal gardening (p.52). John Worsey talks to a very happy and philosophical Portsmouth wrestler, Rishi Ghosh (p.72). And, if you were feeling sad about your children or grandchildren going back to school after the summer holidays, it will soon be time for half term and our Girl about Southsea is looking forward to a low cost, maximum fun, half term break (p.20).

sources of inspiration always bring out the best in me. The first is nature
- from soaring seabirds to the sea spray, bubbles and weave of waves. Our latest collection is inspired by wild yet fragile ferns. Captivated by their shapes and silhouettes, while on a winter break in the mountains, I let beautiful textures and patterns unfurl onto my sketch pad. My other favourite inspiration is our customers.
Whether designing a bespoke engagement ring or remodelling an heirloom for a new life, I seek to understand the person who will wear it. Your lifestyle, much-loved colours, treasured memories all these things and more inspire me to create unique and meaningful pieces: Jewellery for Life.
Whether you own a Charlotte Cornelius piece already or you’d simply like to see what we do, I hope you will come and say hello. We’d love to talk to you about our creative process. You may even get the chance to meet one of our growing team of Goldsmiths and get an insight into their craft. We’ll also launch our new collection that weekend, so you can be among the first to see what the beauty of ferns has inspired. Perhaps you’ll inspire me too…
Our customers mean the world to us, so we like to do special things for you. In September, to celebrate the second anniversary of our Castle Road boutique, we invited customers in for birthday cake, fizz and an extra special game of pass the parcel. Later that week, our experts gave insights into the history, sourcing and cutting of gemstones in a masterclass and private view. From October 13th - 15th, we’ll open our doors at 66

WELCOME HOME...
With such a cool, creative vibe happening in Southsea, it stands to reason there must be some pretty fabulous homes out there to intrigue and inspire us all.
W
hen Jo MacManus was buying her Victorian home in Festing Road three years ago, she admitted there were a few sleepless nights.
Jo is justifiably most proud of the stunning open plan kitchen with its industrial finish brought to life by the edgy Crittall windows that give it a warehouse feel.
“It had been a student house and every room was a bedsit with its own kitchen - there was an over-riding smell of Pot Noodles and unwashed socks,” she cheerfully recalled.
“When I told the electrician I wanted surface mounted ducting, he told me he had spent his whole career hiding that sort of thing.
To make her dreams for the five bedroom home come true, she enlisted the help of Joe Moser from the Design Team Studios and builder Tom Fricker (TWF Building Services).
“The Crittall windows were my biggest outlay but they are my greatest joy,” she said. Having masterminded this transformation, Jo is now looking for the next challenge and her house is currently on the market.

In the tradition of ‘Through the Keyhole,’ we are encouraging residents with beautiful, different and downright quirky abodes to throw open their doors to Southsea Lifestyle readers and share how they have made their mark on the place they call home. Words by Kate Thompson,
Here’s Jo’s top-tip. “With a major project like this you have to rip the place apart before you put it back together. I would
advise not to do what I did and live on site while the work is being done. It’s not good for you or the builders.”

HOUSING MARKET FALLS?
T
Neil Maxwell
here has been a lot of publicity in recent weeks about the housing market and how it has stalled, with prices falling. We’ve just enjoyed a better summer than 2016, so it’s hard to see where this data comes from, and according to the land registry figures, house prices have actually increased by 5.1% this year.
Uncertainty over Brexit has played a part in consumer confidence generally, but I’m not convinced that there are real problems in the housing market locally. I strongly suspect that the growth of newly built student halls will see more family houses come on to the market. As I write, there are currently one hundred and thirty five former student homes awaiting tenants, while there is also a shortage of family homes to rent and buy, which should counteract any imbalance in the market fairly easily. There is definitely a problem with overpricing by some agents and one or two have made a career out of it, wasting what must now amount to centuries of people’s lives with over-zealous valuations. There is a
fine line between maximising the price for a client, which is any agent's legal obligation, and selling a house the next day and remaining confident you haven’t undervalued it. The market continues, in my opinion, to suffer from a shortage of available properties, and has done so for the last couple of years. Any change by the Bank of England to interest rates to counteract inflation has in the past brought a new wave of mortgage products to the market. These mortgage products have stimulated the market, whether it will work with rates going up, we will shortly find out! This summer has seen bumper levels of enquiries from newcomers to the area following recent local events, from the Heavy Horse Show back in May to the Food festival, and the excellent inaugural Seafood festival in June, not forgetting the wonderful Victorious Festival. All serve to remind us what a vibrant place we live in and go a long way in attracting newcomers to the city.

HALF TERM: LOW COST, MAXIMUM FUN Girl About Southsea
The October half term is always a tricky one, being the first of the academic year after the summer holidays and having spent
what may feel like a small fortune on clubs, camps and days out, and the break just before Christmas. Plus with unpredictable autumn weather it can sometimes be difficult to plan activities. So the October half term tends to be a little more low cost, but always maximum fun. When the autumnal weather is a little unpredictable, some of our favourite indoor activities are crafts and playdough. Like most kids, mine love to be creative and make a mess with artistic creations, leaving me to pick up the Playdough and paper cuttings from the floor. We also love Photos: www.facebook.com/TonyPalmerPhotography
I
t feels as though we have only just sent the kids back to school in their new oversized uniforms, yet somehow it’s almost half term already. It really shouldn’t be a surprise to us parents as the school holidays are approximately every six weeks. But after just settling into to the new term time routine after the six weeks summer holidays, we’re back to the drawing board planning activities and days out to keep the kids busy.
Portsmouth Museum and
the
Natural
History Museum are also great places my kids enjoy visiting. The kids are so inquisitive and love to learn and find out new things, the museums are the perfect place. We are so lucky to live in a place where there are so many things to do, with family activities on experimental baking and with half term being so close to Halloween, it’s the perfect time to make spooky cookies.
our doorstep all year round. Many are free or low cost, and of course, always maximum fun.
When the weather is a little more predictable we love to head to the beach, racing across the esplanade on scooters before a treasure hunt, looking for precious stones and pretty shells to bring back and place in the garden, or on the window sill. Canoe Lake is one of our go-to’s. It’s such a diverse and family centric location that can keep the kids entertained for hours. The big playpark is great for kids of all ages, from a sand pit, to a zip wire, there is something for them all. Not forgetting the lake for crabbing and pedalo swans. Southsea Castle is a fantastic piece of history for the kids to explore and enjoy. The cannons, architecture, historic displays inside and the views outside make it a really enjoyable trip out for all. 21
THE KING’S ANNIVERSARY
T
Chris Horton
his month sees the 110th anniversary of one of Southsea’s most loved establishments; The King’s Theatre. A
venue with a very special place in Southsea
resident’s hearts I’m lucky enough to be given a tour by two of it’s long serving archivists, Chris Grant and Peter Rann. Both men are fountains of knowledge, bombarding me with a whole host of wonderful facts and stories they’ve uncovered detailing the last one hundred years or so. “We need to document the history of such an important theatre not just for Portsmouth but on a national level too” states Peter explaining how the theatre’s architect, Frank Matcham, was a world renowned theatre designer who also designed The London Palladium.
Photos: Derek Rodgers, Instagram: imagesurgeon
Sitting in a box seat - incidentally not the ‘best seat’
in the house according to Peter, “These were to be seen in, rather then to actually see” he reveals - I mention my first experience of The King’s was actually on film. The famous Pinball Wizard scene from Tommy was shot here with The Who and Elton John’s performance now part of film musical folklore. With that, the pair proceed to rattle off a who’s who of those that have trodden the boards including such luminaires as Houdini, Laurel and Hardy and Gracie Fields. “Oh, and Dr Who himself!” adds Chris “Well, William Hartnell once appeared in a production but that’s close enough” he chuckles. It even bore the weight of six elephants at one point and although nothing quite so exotic has been witnessed since I’m casually reminded that last year’s Tosca performance did include a Golden Eagle.
22
I’m after more facts and Chris is quick to suggest another. “Did you know there’s a pond under the stage? It’s built over a spring. Matcham realised this so built the stage on brick stilts so that it wouldn’t rot.” Rumours of band members having to get a boat to make their way to the orchestra pit are disappointingly untrue though the water is technically a spring and therefore potentially drinkable, but I think I’ll stick to my interval ice cream next time. Over the next half hour I’m told how it only took a year to build the theatre - looking at the intricate ceiling designs this seems incomprehensible with many of the original features still surviving. Performances carried on throughout the war with a light on the side of the stage signalling any air raids. The productions would continue, though audie nces were offered the chance to leave if they wished. “Most stayed” stresses Chris.
Despite being a fascinating insight into such a grand building Peter is at pains to stress the continued role it plays in Southsea today. “The character of the theatre hasn’t changed over the years.” he says “It’s not like a National Trust property where you have to be careful what you touch, we highlight it’s history but t his place has to earn it’s keep and continue to be a huge part of the local community”. So what brings people to the theatre still in this age of Photos: Derek Rodgers, Instagram: imagesurgeon
domestic digital technology? “You can’t beat a live show” declares Chris as we look out over the auditorium. “Every performance is unique, it isn’t the same with television. You’ve got the wow factor with a place like this”. The simple fact is that Southsea love s it’s theatre. As I step outside I’m reminded of something Chris tells me when I ask why he’s so dedicated. “This place is special, I love it to bits. I pat it every night before I head home”. Looking up at the grand entrance with a smile on my face, I do the same. 24

eye paintings can be seen in Goldsmith Avenue and Exmouth Road - and he still leaves art on the street on a Friday. A former teacher - My Dog Sighs aka Paul Stone, cautioned Art Trail visitors not to mind the creative mess when they come calling. “You will have to take me as you find me - it is a working studio and there are half-finished bits of work lying around. “I get up in the morning, climb into the studio and splash a lot of paint around!” he exclaimed. Social media has played a major role in raising his profile and creating opportunities to work and exhibit across the globe.
“There is a real art scene - it is a creative city with artists who want to make the city bright and beautiful.”
“I get messages in the middle of the night from people in Indonesia and Hong-Kong saying they are following my work - and now I am getting the opportunity to travel to these places and work.” This year alone he worked on a piece of street art in China on a 13 storey building and he came back buzzing from a recent sellout show in New York. While he may spend an increasing amount of his life on the road globetrotting, Paul loves coming home to Southsea. “We are trapped between the railway line and the sea in a place where everybody seems to know everyone.

THE CHANGING FACE OF FOOD
I
Tara Knight
was lucky enough to catch one of my food heroes, Yotam Ottolenghi “in conversation” this summer, where he discussed the changing face of British food. Being born in the Middle East I always assumed my love of his dishes stemmed from simple nostalgia – yet as I listened I realised he is my first true food champion.
When Ottolenghi started his Ledbury Road deli in 2002 with its huge bowls of colourful salads, beautiful baked goods and one communal table for 10; it was representative of a changing time. Up to then, great food had been associated with exclusive high end restaurants and came with a price tag to match; now here was a deli offering exceptional food with no reservations; indeed most people had to take the food away with them. Not just the style of eating – but the quality of the food itself was also changing. With Ottolenghi there were no limp green salads, but exciting ingredients brought together in harmony. Quality food for everyday eating. At the same time other food producers were getting their voices heard – a plethora of River Café graduates like Hugh Fearnley 36
Whittingstall and Jamie Oliver were promoting quality food for the everyday; simultaneously the press began celebrating food as a lifestyle, not just fuel for the family. The face of British cuisine was changing, and although not one person would be responsible for this we were becoming a nation obsessed with better food. 15 years later and a more casual approach to eating great f o o d h a s seeped into the wider British conscience; we are in the midst of café culture and the calibre of food coming out of cafes and available as street food is outstanding. Locally we have so many, of recent note the new Fisherman’s Kitchen takes fish and chips to the next level; and check out Hunter Gather in Albert Road for an evening programme of street food collaborations with the likes of Arepa2go and Carters Texas BBQ. As a consumer this is wonderful; although I love a true restaurant experience, I also want to eat great food all the time. We are living in an age where everyday food that has been shaped by passionate foodies, and I love them for it.

ell… the clocks go back on 29th October, and so starts the descent into darkness and bad weather. It’s time for theatres to pull out their big shows, and for spooky spectaculars in Gunwharf… Dance fans, meanwhile, should dust off their theatre jackets; not only is Strictly back on TV, but there are five top-notch performances in Southsea this month.
Factory Girl at the New Theatre Royal (6 Oct) is dance-theatre from South Korea that tells the story of a worker in a Japaneseowned factory during the Korean industrial boom of the 1930s. Based on a short story published serially in a daily newspaper, the Chosun Ilbo, in 1931.
Factory Girl
There’s more politics in #Je Suis (In Progress) (21 Oct) also at The New Theatre Royal. Choreographer and dancer, Aakash Odedra worked with a group of Turkish dancers to create “a 40-minute experiment in cuttingedge contemporary dance”, with a new score by Nicki Wells”. Its title refers to the “Je 48
suis Charlie” hashtag of 2015 and hints at “the frustrations of life in a homeland that doesn’t know the meaning of ‘home’ anymore”. Less polemical — on the surface — is Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty, danced this month by the Vienna Festival Ballet (19 October, New Theatre Royal). You could find a political angle if you want; written at the tail end of the Russian empire, about dark forces that disrupt a kingdom, it prefigures the Russian Revolution. Even for younger fans, the sweeping symphonic music hints at a manysided world. After that, the New Theatre Royal brings us yet more dance in a Ballet Black Triple Bill featuring Red Riding Hood (21 October). Blending classical and contemporary, narrative and abstract, it’s performed by dancers of black and Asian descent. Works include French choreographer, Ludovic Ondiviela’s Dopamine, a pas de deux about love, lust and passion with an original score created by Fabio D'Andrea, and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s twist on Red Riding Hood (where the wolf is on the defensive). Not to be outdone, the Kings Theatre presents English Youth Ballet’s Coppelia (20-21 October) with 100 local ballet dancers alongside professional Principles, with new choreography by Janet Lewis and Dominic Marshall. The tale of the eccentric toymaker Dr Coppélius and his toy doll Coppélia – features the much-loved early examples of ‘animatronic dancing’.
At The Guildhall, Bournemouth Symphony plays Beethoven and Bizet (5 Oct). Conducted by Kirill Karabits, including Beethoven’s First Symphony and Bizet’s Symphony in C. Then, on 20 October, they play Mozart and Haydn, conducted by Reinhard Goebel, with Mozart’s Sinfonia in G Major 'Neue Lambacher' and Haydn’s Cello Concerto.

AUTUMN BEAUTY

Walter Dall’Omo
ith autumn now upon us, it’s a busy time to be working in the garden. Now is a perfect time to prune those Summer perennials that are beginning to die back and also plants you want to promote a compact habit or flowers for next season. It is also leaf clearing time, the garden doesn’t need to be spotless by any means as leaves provide good protection for wildlife and some insects that are good for our garden’s environment and of course break down and fertilise the soil. Making sure drains are free from debris is also an important task. Spring flowering bulbs are readily available now, and as the ground becomes softer and wetter, planting them is not going to be a difficult task, why not try a low height mix
of Narcissus Tete-a-Tete and Muscari armeniacum for a great colour contrast of yellows and blues. Of course autumn is best known for its affect on plant foliage. Many deciduous leaves turn beautiful colours and look stunning in the autumn sun. If you have a smaller garden, some of the Cornus varieties will provide you with a great display and also with the benefit of winter stem colour too. I particularly like the yellow hues that hostas’ provide before they completely die back for the winter. If it’s autumn tree colour you are after, try Acers for smaller gardens (but keep them protected from the harsh coastal winds) but if you have more space Amalanchier varieties are stunning. Have a great Autumn and enjoy nature’s palette at its finest.

ocal traders and markets need you at his time of year! On the dark mornings, setting up market stalls is a tough job! The traders and market operators are kept going by knowing their loyal customers will be there to support them in the run up to the (dare we say it?) festive period. Southsea’s weekly markets are here until November when the festive markets kick in.

The local markets are imbedded into the distinctiveness and vibrancy of Southsea. Complementing the high street offering and contributing to the growth of the area, the local markets bring a real social, cultural and leisure aspect to the retail experience, and of course, they offer local small and microbusinesses the chance to sell their products as well as test new ranges. Local markets act as a stimulus for the area, attracting people, exposing shoppers to a mix of retail options and encouraging them to explore the local area. Southsea is a prime example of a thriving market environment with four different markets every month.

With short term, one off and day pitches, running a stall presents a viable route for retail and start-up business to trial products, establish a customer base and develop ranges at affordable rates. fter being laid off from work, Jimmy (Channing Tatum) devises a plan to rob his ex-workplace: The Charlotte Motor Speedway in West Virginia, USA. He recruits Joe Bang (Daniel Craig) and his hick brothers to carry out his plan.
This is an oddball film- not a screwball comedy, but a comedy that doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be. Packed with stars who obviously want to work with Soderbergh - his reputation and past films are highly regarded. This is his first film for four years.
caper which trips along nicely with oddball characters, quite a few funny moments, and a twist in the tale. But there is something bubbling underneath that doesn’t feel ‘right’, i.e. the heavy reliance on a Dukes of Hazard Southern US culture: macho fast cars, anti-establishment attitudes, Daisy Duke hotpants, Lynyrd Skynyrd, child beauty pageants, Nascar, and, most worryingly- militarism. Add in his self-referential nods to his filmic career and his digs at the relationship between film and TV, and it starts to feel weird, slightly off tone.
At face value, it is a gentle comic heist Russell Baldwin

OCTOBER BIRTHSTONE - OPAL
he name ‘opal’ comes from the Greek work ‘opallios’ which means ‘to see a change of colour’. In ancient times the opal was known as the ‘Queen of Gems,’ because it encompasses the colours of all other gems. People believed that the opal possessed the powers of each gemstone whose colour appeared in its sheen, making it a very lucky stone. Every opal is truly one of a kind, and as individual as our finger prints.
Opal’s classic country of origin is Australia. It is formed by a solution of silicon dioxide and water. As seasonal rains soaked the parched outback, the water
runs down through the earth, picking up silica from sandstone, and carries this silica-rich solution into cracks and voids, such as natural faults or decomposing fossils. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind a silica deposit. Opal is eventually formed over a long period of time after this cycle has been repeated over and over again.
Opal ring from Barbara Tipple. 15 Marmion Road, Southsea PO5 2AT
There are many types of opal varieties; the most universally recognised and precious is black opal. These can be distinguished by the flashes of blues, greens, and fiery reds and yellows. There is also fire opal, Mexican jelly opal, Ethiopian opal and opal matrix. 57
MORTGAGES FOR FIRST TIMERS
W
Chris Holden
hen I was a baby, in 1970, my parents used to push me in my pram to watch their first and brand-new house being built. I just about remember it – 3 bedrooms, front and back garden and a garage. My dad, a bank clerk at the time, earned a little under the average annual salary of £1600. The new build house cost £4975 – just on the average in 1970.
Simpler times eh? Now in 2017 to buy a similar house as a first-time buyer you would need a deposit of at least £23,000 and a debt free joint (or sole) income of over £50,000 per annum. House price inflation in the last forty odd years has outstripped wage rises by 300% which means first time buyers need to act smart and be thrifty to get a foot on the ladder. But its not all doom and gloom – there are some really excellent deals in the market for first-time buyers and, as a mortgage broker, I
would strongly recommend you follow my 5 top tips to get your first mortgage: u Repay your debts before getting a mortgage. Your monthly debt repayments are taken off your income when calculating how much you can borrow. Don’t rush, pay off the loans and cards first. v Save and save again. The bigger your deposit, the better your potential mortgage deal. ‘Help to Buy’ ISAs are a great way to save and make some cash. w Settle down. Your chances of getting a mortgage are strongly enhanced by having a track record of paying rent, don’t have too many addresses in a 3-year period and ensure you are on the electoral roll. x Be organised. Make sure all your bills are paid on time – don’t miss phone bills or council tax direct debits and make sure you stay within your overdraft limit. All this helps your credit score. y Make a withdrawal from the bank of Mum and Dad. After all – they had it bloody easy in 1970!

IN A MYSTERIOUS MANOR
fter 4 sell-out productions in just 10 months, Torchlight Mysteries is back doing what it does best: creating theatre in heritage locations - in particular, continuing their run of hugely-popular events at Wymering Manor, Portsmouth’s oldest house!
A murder at the Martindale family manor throws the weekend’s plans into disarray, and the local police see fit to send nothing more than a novice Constable to investigate. Smyth plays opposite Maria Kennedy as Archibald ‘Will’ Fitzwilliam and Harriet Martindale, two young friends who join forces to try to save the household from wrongful arrest by cracking the case themselves.
Actor Peter Colley says, “This play has a charming set of characters at its core. I’m playing the Butler with an eccentric attitude to home security!” The company has played to packed houses at a collection of other sites and venues this year, including The Hound of The Baskervilles at New Theatre Royal last month.
Cast member Alistair Smyth explains how excited the team is to be back at the Manor. “We love rehearsing and performing in the Great Hall at the Manor, it’s like a second home.” Having kicked off there last November, with Agatha Christie’s Spider’s Web, they are back this month with their new production, Murder at Martindale Manor, a clever murder mystery play with plot twists and laughs galore, a collection of eccentric characters, and a surprising denouement! 68
Tickets for Murder at Martindale Manor are £15 and available from www.torchlightmysteries.com Some performances are already sold out, so it is advised to book as soon as possible. 11 th-20th October, nightly at 7:30pm (with 2:30pm matinees on 14th & 15th).

ASYLUM – A NIGHT OF GLOBAL SOUNDS
A
SYLUM was launched by Dash Arts at London’s Courtyard Theatre as a response to anti-migrant rhetoric. Now, the Dash Arts team has joined up
with Journeys Festival International and The People’s Lounge to present a live performance from the phenomenal Syrian kanun player, Maya Youssef, winner of the Exceptional Talent Award and recent star of the BBC Proms at The Royal Albert Hall and WOMAD. Maya recently performed at Victorious Festival in The World Music Village and is making a welcome return to Portsmouth. Join Maya for an intimate evening performance that will close Journeys Festival International Portsmouth for 2017, and prove that music is a healer and antidote to what is happening, not only in Syria but across the entire world. Supported by Portsmouth Festivities and Portsmouth Guildhall. Journeys Festival International celebrates the creative talents of refugee and asylum seeker artists,

THE PORTSMOUTH WRESTLER John Worsey
N
ot long ago, Rishi Ghosh spent his days as a social worker, selflessly supporting vulnerable people to live fuller lives. But by night, he transforms into the dastardly Prince of Mumbai. Dressed in ostentatious regal robes, this conceited villain selfishly scours Britain’s wrestling rings; ruining other competitors’ dreams in the quest for personal glory.
Last year, the Prince of Mumbai won five championships, two trophies, a whole lot of boos… and a bellyful of laughs. Because for all his villainy, his real goal is entertainment. “I’m a comedy villain,” Rishi explains, out of character, over a pot of tea in his Southsea home. “How comical it gets depends on who I’m working with. All crowds are different, so how are you going to deliver what they like and get them to make noise?” He might carry off those robes like he was born to wear them, but Rishi was actually born right here in Portsmouth. He learned to wrestle here too, training 10 hours a week from the age of 15, at the old Frontier Wrestling Alliance Academy, under Mark Sloan. Several Academy alumni, including current WWE NXT Champion Drew McIntyre, have gone on to global careers. Today, Rishi’s in-ring career spans eight promotions, including Revo lution Pro Wrestling (RPW) which runs shows at Portsmouth Guildhall, the Mountbatten Centre and around the UK. He recently stepped away from social work to focus on training tomorrow’s aspiring pro wrestlers. As well as being one of the 72
trainers at the RPW Portsmouth School of Wrestling, which runs regular classes for all ages in Fratton, he also has a flourishing business offering one-to-one tuition. Since he started providing personal wrestling training in April, three of Rishi’s trainees have already made their professional debuts. Two had never wrestled before! “I’m unbelievably proud of their dedication, hard work and how they handle themselves as human beings.” Rishi also works as a disability sports coach, which means he can help people with all kinds of physicality perform at their best. “Some of my trainees want to be pro wrestlers and take it very seriously. Others are fans and just want to give it a go. I make sure they have a good workout, learn great techniques and have fun. Some are natural athletes, some aren’t, but the main ingredient is dedication. If you want to make it to the circuit, you’ve got to be training in the ring at least once a week and honing your craft. There are so many different aspects to it character, psychology, technical wrestling, moves, sequences, timing. Showmanship is a huge part of it.” A consummate showman himself, Rishi says, “I used to be embarrassed to tell people I was a pro wrestler, but wrestling has become cool. It’s never been so big in Britain in my lifetime.” If you’re interested in getting to grips with grappling, you can find Rishi on Facebook by searching for “Pro Wrestling Training - Private sessions” or find RPW Academy classes at portsmouthwrestling.com.
