n our loft, carved into a wooden beam, you can just make out the names and dates of the men who built the house in around 1898. On another beam, scratched in biro, someone has written ‘Dave woz here 1978’. The front step worn away by countless footsteps, the redundant picture rails and fireplaces are all reminders of former inhabitants. I think it’s fair to say that most of our city’s housing stock is Victorian, or at least pre-Second World War. But what to do with the numerous commercial buildings that are no longer fit for purpose? Mark Harris takes a look at some of his favourite historic buildings that have been re-used and re-fitted for our time (p.8).

I’m sure previous generations would have had much the same worries that we have to contend with, but it was probably never quite as busy and as stressful as life has become today. John Worsey, speaks about anxiety, and how he has learnt to cope with it (p.43). While David West talks to Kate Thompson about a glamorous holiday in the Bahamas, all filmed for TV but confronting issues surrounding body weight and self confidence (p.64). We think it all makes for a thought provoking read. As ever, if you have a story to tell, or maybe you would like your home to appear in our Welcome Home feature (p.16), we’d love to hear from you.

CASTLE ROAD CLOCK TOWER, CASTLE ROAD The focal point of Castle Road, the Clock Tower is now used by various creative enterprises but many readers will remember the previous occupiers, the Fleming brothers’ antiques shop. In fact, since the building opened in 1903 it has been home to a car showroom and another antique dealer, Ernest Smith, whose name still survives on the clock. Last year it was awarded the city’s best restoration project by the Portsmouth Society.

BUYING OR SELLING A HOME OFTEN RAISES LOTS OF QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS. HERE ARE A FEW QUESTIONS I HAVE BEEN ASKED RECENTLY… Neil Maxwell AS IT’S SUPPOSEDLY A SELLER’S MARKET, SHOULD I SELL MY HOUSE BEFOREHAND, SO THAT I CAN ACT QUICKLY TO BUY THE BEST POSSIBLE PROPERTY AT A LOWER PRICE? Breaking the chain could solve a lot of problems with the sale of your own property, and potentially allow you to pounce on a bargain. Things to consider are the rental costs of another property, any storage costs, and finally, two lots of removals. But putting yourself in a chain-free position does give you the upperhand. IS IT WORTH SPENDING MY SAVINGS ON HAVING A NEW KITCHEN OR BATHROOM FITTED TO MAKE SURE I GET THE BEST RETURN ON MY PROPERTY? Making the house look its very best will ensure you get the best price, but remember it’s not your ‘forever’ kitchen or bathroom, so don’t go over the top. We have carried out many projects for clients like this, and on the most recent occasion, a £25,000 spend got the client an extra £90,000 compared to the starting valuations. THE HOUSE WE'D REALLY LIKE IS A BIT ABOVE OUR BUDGET. WE COULD TRY FOR WITH AN INCREASED MORTGAGE, BUT ARE INTEREST RATES LIKELY TO INCREASE SUBSTANTIALLY OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS? At the moment, all the talk is of rates going up, and after such a prolonged period of low-level interest, inevitably the only way is up. When, this will occur is not certain, but getting a fixed rate mortgage will help to insulate your monthly budget for several years from any rate rises. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THE VALUE OF PROPERTY IN SOUTHSEA KEEPS GOING UP. WILL PRICES EVENTUALLY LEVEL OFF OR EVEN FALL? Whilst values of homes in Southsea seem to be 14
going up, it really feels as though prices have levelled off in the last couple of months. There is still an underlying requirement for more homes in the city, and with a shortage of land and new builds, it’s very hard to see this situation changing. Given the shortage of the current supply, prices will probably stay at the current levels. I HAVE INHERITED A HOUSE, SHOULD I SELL IT STRAIGHT AWAY OR MAYBE RENT IT? The answer to this lies in the value and material state of the property. Getting valuations of the current condition and improved condition will allow you to make sure any capital expenditure does not take it above the current, or improved value. As a long term letting investment, the income and capital growth makes this a very sensible path to take. With house prices doubling roughly every 15-20 years since WW2 it will become more valuable in the long term. WE HAVE FOUND A LOVELY HOUSE BUT SOME OF THE HOUSES NEARBY ARE NOT WELL MAINTAINED, SHOULD WE STILL BUY IT AND HOPE THE NEIGHBOURHOOD WILL IMPROVE IN TIME? If you are comfortable with the area there is absolutely no harm in buying the property. Try to visit the road at a variety of different times and days to see how you find it. It’s often advisable to knock the doors of neighbouring properties and introduce yourself. Clients in the past who have done this often found that once they have started renovating their house, other people in the neighbourhood soon followed suit - improving the street beyond recognition.

CLECTIC is a tricky look to pull-off, but interior designer Lesley Taylor’s practised eye ensures her Southsea home is the perfect backdrop for her ‘60s and ‘70s design artefacts.
“There are no right angles in this house – the whole top end of the road is on a skew. When I moved here I needed more space and that meant I had to buy more furniture. “Luckily Southsea is great for picking up bargains. I went to Fawcett Road and Highland Road and got some really quirky bits and the look has just evolved from there,” she explained. Put ting old with new and overlaying a smattering of treasured items is key to creating rooms that have
harmony and Lesley admits she likes to encourage her clients to inject some personality into their living space. “Some people just want a white box (although there aren’t that many in Southsea). I work with commercial clients such as the Seacrest Hotel and I like to think I help them to bring their character into the interior,” she said. More than just making rooms look perfect, Lesley’s study of interior design has helped her to embrace the concept of material culture and how you can understand so much about a person through the clothes they wear and the space they call home. Ask Lesley what’s the one article she would save in

TEACHING TEACHERS
he UK is facing a shortage of secondary teachers, particularly in STEM subjects, (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths). To help address this problem, The Portsmouth Teaching School Alliance recruits graduates, many of them leaving successful careers in other sectors, to work in the classroom. “We are pleased to say 63% of our recent intake of secondary trainees are specialising in STEM subjects,” said the Director of the Initial Teacher Training, Lynn Nicholls.
Amy Sanchez
“Recruitment of teachers has been one of the biggest challenges of being a head teacher. I believe we need to ‘grow our own’, and feel much more confident about this thanks to the Portsmouth Teaching Alliance,” said Natalie Sheppard, principal of Portsmouth Academy.
Mike Richards
Mike Richards (maths), had a career as a research scientist, before deciding to change careers to teach. Amy Sanchez (physics), read physics at Oxford and then worked at Portsmouth University prior to teaching. 22

Blade Runner 2049 USA 2017 Director: Denis Villeneuve Cert 15 2hrs 43mins
inally, the sequel to the much lauded Blade Runner (1982). Directed not by Ridley Scott, but by Denis Villeneuve, whose intelligent sci-fi Arrival recently grabbed our attention, but written by the same writer of the original, thirty five years ago.
Not the original story, of course. That was by Philip K. Dick - Do Andrioids Dream of Electric Sheep. Scott took that novel and added the dystopian urban neon decaying postmodern locations of Los Angeles in 2019 which were so memorable, ‘Techno Noir’, it was termed. Ryan Gosling takes the main role as LAPD officer K. He becomes involved in a mystery which is a legacy from Harrison Ford’s original officer - the Blade Runner, still hunting down the bio
engineered humans called Replicants. It is a long film - two and three quarter hours. You don’t have to be a sci-fi geek to appreciate this film – but it helps. You don’t have to have seen the first film – but it helps. I lost the plot a couple times, but it is the look, the tone, the aesthetics of this film which are so engrossing. Ryan Gosling is excellent as the lonely Chandleresque detective wandering the alleyways and avenues of a world where something very nasty has happened and the old world order is trying to hang on. It’s a bleak, desperate, joyless, vicious warning of a film. Excellent.

show is said to be “bigger and better than ever before” – with more budget for fireworks. Stores stay open until 9pm. Nadine Coyle from Girl’s Aloud, and 2016 X Factor winner Matt Terry are hosting. Then fiery skies turn to icy, erm, floors – as the Guildhall Square opens up its much-anticipated Ice Rink (18 Nov-2 Jan). It’s going to be real ice (not the slippy oil alternative used in smaller temporary rinks) and will measure some 646 square metres, big enough for 215 skaters per
Elsewhere around the city, have you seen the bright pink and orange posters – high up on walls in unexpected places? Maybe you had to crane your neck to read the wording? These are all part of the Journeys Festival International, in collaboration with Aspex Gallery (on show until 29 Nov). Two Portsmouth-based artists, Natalia Michalska and Majid Dhana, worked with members of the Portsmouth refugee community to make these huge creative portraits of local refugees and asylum seekers, incorporating original poetry written in collaborative workshops. Also at Aspex (until 26 Nov) is Platform 2017, an intriguing show of mixed works by 12 art students from local universities. They’ve been short-listed for this exhibition, and one will be chosen

The trigger was the sight of a passenger wearing one of those pollution masks you see in news footage of congested Chinese cities. In my anxious state, this seemed to prove something: There’s a sickness in the air. We’re trapped with it. There’s no escape from this plane. My heart started pounding, my breath caught in my throat. I tried to distract myself with my headphones, but I couldn’t let go of the anxious thoughts. Awful scenarios of a plagued plane flooded my terrified imagination. This happened even though I knew, on some level, what was really going on: I’m having a panic attack. I just couldn’t make it stop.
A few days after panic at 40,000 feet, I visited a website, headspace.com. I downloaded their app onto my phone, and so began an ongoing journey into the world of mindfulness and meditation. I’ ve used the app every day since and it has been genuinely life-changing. Mindful meditation has given me a wholly different way of understanding anxiety. It has helped me to be more aware of the thoughts and feelings that drift through our minds like clouds across a clear blue sky, and to see troubling emotions in a new light. It’s not that I never feel anxious anymore, but I am anxious less often, and less severely, because I have a changed relationship to my

RETURNING TO PORTSMOUTH Emma Beatty
J
essica Hayles spoke to us in her dressing room in the Lake District, performing Rosalind in As you Like It at the intimate 300-seat Theatre by the Lake. She was getting ready to bring the play down to the New Theatre Royal, for three days this month (23-25 Nov), in this new production by Kate Saxon for the award-winning Shared Experience company.
this imaginative whacky wonderland – the Forest of Arden. The sharp suits of the political world become colourful, comfortable modern dress – a bit like what you might wear to a festival. The Forest is a wild, abstract place. It’s got a feeling of liberty, almost dreamlike, an imaginative space where comic characters live and love can happen.
Originally from Bath, Jessica made her TV debut in Doctor Who for the BBC. She used to come to Portsmouth as a child, so remembers the sea and pier and is “really looking forward to being by the south coast, after all those months up North.”
TELL US ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION: It’s modern, exciting, colourful, full of movement and music. We transpose the Ducal setting to a modern political world – the Duke becomes a Prime Minister. It’s not completely our world, but a world you’ll recognise. Rosalind is the Prime Minister’s daughter.
As You Like It at Theatre By The Lake. Jessica Hayles (Rosalind) and cast. Photo: Keith Pattison
Two shepherds live in the forest, and Rosalind gets involved in their love story. Then, there’s Touchstone, the fool who woos Audrey. In our production, Audrey is a cross-dressing man, a short of Little Bo Peep/Grayson Perry mashup.
TELL US A ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER: She’s bold and

quick-witted. She’s breaking out of the restraints she finds herself in and the pressure that’s put upon her. She finds her feet as Ganymede - as a boy – more than she could as a woman in that world. She gets caught up in the dramas of the forest and follows her own story to its conclusion – falling in love with Orlando while dressed as a
man. She dresses up to disguise her identity and through that finds her freedom. That’s what the play’s about, partly. Does Orlando fall in love with her as a woman, or a man? Does it matter? Is the love real? Freedom of expression, on Rosalind’s part, is wonderful to explore for me as an actress—that freedom to be whatever you want.
HOW HARD IS IT TO ACT AS A BOY? Do you have to cross-dress? – It’s modern-dress, so she wears khaki combat trousers and converses and hides her hair under a cap. Is she totally convincing as a boy? That’s up to the audience. She slips up sometimes and that’s part of the excitement of watching it. “But surely, she’s slipping,” you think, “Surely, he knows she’s a girl.” Rosalind is very clever – watching her grab that back and entice Orlando is part of the dynamic.
CAN YOU QUOTE SOME MEMORABLE LINES?: “Men are April when they woo, December when they wed” That’s to say, men are more comfortable when they wed, their excitable younger selves just go for what they want. Rosalind is wise, and can see this in Orlando, she’s telling him “I’m aware of what men can be like”. “Maids are May when they are maids, but the sky changes when they are wives” Here, Rosalind is challenging Orlando, saying she knows what men are like and she knows their love is real and she knows it’s going to last.
SHOULD I BUY A TICKET?: If you’re curious about Shakespeare, this is a perfect production to watch. You’ll definitely understand it, it has elements that really uplift you, full of comedy, music, movement, colour. It really is a production made for sharing – and it’s about love – the art of love.

DESIGN BRIEF
A
Walter Dall’Omo
s much as we all love our garden spaces, you might be thinking about changes to a part, or all, of your garden. First make a wish list of things you would like to include. Think about how you want to use your space; what materials do you want to use for hard surfaces? What features would you like to include? How much aftercare will there be? Perhaps you have a particular colour palette for the planting scheme? Just as important is making a list of things you want to avoid: deep, inaccessible planting borders, poisonous or irritant plants are just a couple to consider. Once you have completed your wants and needs, now the creative fun begins! Drawing a scaled base plan, making several copies allows you to try various shapes and layouts of how the space could look and feel, whilst
making sure that the balance between hard and soft landscaping feels right too. When you have a definitive plan, taking into account any level changes, you can start choosing whether you want a traditional, contemporary, formal ,or informal style. Choosing materials and plant groups will also help determine how your garden will look. When you are ready, you can start quantifying your materials and finding good sources for supplying what you need to realise your design. The process of designing your garden doesn’t need to be hurried, and you can of course adapt your design; it is sometimes very difficult to see past what you already have, if you have been seeing the same view from your windows for many years. Be creative, and good luck putting pen to paper!
From front forecourt or driveway to intimate courtyard or wildlife garden, we can create an outdoor space to suit your style and budget. We work with and for you, from consultation through design, to installation and maintenance. Make contact with us today to start the journey to your new living lifestyle.

WHITE DOG GALLERY
ur galleries have been part of the Southsea community for over 40 years, and the Lee-on-the-Solent community for 7! We’re a family run business with a small team of happy, dedicated, trained staff. We aim to create a friendly atmosphere offering help and guidance on buying art and art supplies. We also have expert knowledge on framing. We all love art and beautiful things and look forward to sharing our passion with you!
Who doesn’t need to buy a gift at some point – but especially at this time of year. Our gifts are unique and design-led, and we work mainly with small, independent companies and individual artisans to bring you an exciting and distinctive selection. Due to many of our gifts being exclusive to us, you won’t find them in every shop on the high street.
We frame to the standards of the Fine Art Trade Guild, the industry standard, demonstrating our ability to care for your artwork and give you the best advice. Whatever you have that needs framing – be it a family heirloom or photo, perhaps a painting or military medals– we’ll discuss the best way to frame it, ensuring it’s cared for and protected, as well as looking superb! 48
We have the largest range of local art on the south coast. Supporting and working closely with over 30 local artists, we display work in a variety of styles and subject matter. So if you’re looking for something for your own home, or maybe a memento for someone leaving the area, we always have something to offer.
In our Southsea store we have a full range of art supplies – from paint and brushes, paper and card, through to mediums, palettes, easels and sketch books. And if we don’t have an item in stock, we’ll do our best to order it for you. Furthermore, it’s possible to order and collect supplies from our Lee-on-Solent store too!
We currently have a large collection of work by the internationally renowned marine artist William L Wyllie. Our collection: Wyllie, A Life
We have a first class fine art printing service. So if you’ve ever thought about putting your artwork into print, just pop in to see us and discuss your requirements. In addition, we have a greeting card service, so again, if you have an image that you want to produce as greeting cards, or even a personalised Christmas card, then come in for a chat and we can explain all about it!
in Sketches comprises of watercolour sketches, pencil sketches, photographs, unsigned prints, some small unsigned etchings, and memorabilia personal to Wyllie and his immediate family. Much of the work dates back to his youth, making it rare and extremely collectable.

THE 2-MINUTE BEACH CLEAN Plastic in our seas is a serious problem, Tom Greenwood, Sustainability & Environment Facilitator at the University of Portsmouth suggests a way to help…
O
rganised beach cleans are fantastic and many dedicated groups in Southsea give up their time to clean up plastic and other litter from our shoreline. But what if you can’t make it to an organised meet-up? No problem, try the 2-minute beach clean instead!
Small family run business, anything from plugtop to rewire Tel: 07837 998773 02392 358253 rob@camberelectrical.co.uk
I decided to try the 2-minute beach clean myself and in a small patch of beach no larger than a tennis court, I was able to find 25 bits of plastic in just 2 minutes. That’s 1 piece every 5 seconds, which is quite alarming and surprising, especially as at first sight beaches in Southsea usually look free of litter, but look closer, just below the surface of the sand and pebbles… Marine animals can often eat plastics that they confuse for food. This, along with chemicals and toxins associated with plastic, can pass up the food chain to larger animals and even into our food chain. The next time you take a walk down to the beach why not try a 2-minute beach clean? Just be careful of any sharp objects and have something to collect the rubbish in - which you can deposit in a nearby litter bin. #2minutebeachclean

MORTGAGES FOR FIRST TIMERS

Chris Holden
re you retired? Do you have a reasonable private pension and a house worth over £200,000? Well – if you answered yes to those questions, congratulations you are part of an economic powerhouse and you CAN get a mortgage.
a market which is both low risk and with massive potential. Did you know that: -
The ‘grey’ pound is undoubtedly hugely powerful – the generation that is approaching retirement, or has recently retired, with a guaranteed employers pension (often index linked for life) and who got on the housing ladder in the 1960s or 1970s are in a unique position. Neither the generation before, nor, I fear, the generations after, will have such a potent combination of increased life expectancy, disposable income and property equity. And yet until recently this market has been poorly treated by the mortgage industry – inexplicably obsessed with not lending into retirement despite the guaranteed pension income and instead offering equity release which does not suit many borrower’s circumstances. At last, however, there are Lenders who have realised that this
u You can now get a mortgage with a term that takes you up to the 95th birthday of the youngest applicant? v This is a mortgage – not equity release where interest is rolled up and repaid at either death or the sale. w You can make interest payments each month and downsize your property at the end of the term to repay the capital. x Most loan purposes are accepted – including release of equity to assist children or other family members, debt consolidation and home improvements. y A variety of rates are available including some competitive 5-year fixed products. Whilst this market is expanding – it does not yet include some of the major mortgage players such as the big Banks and Building Societies. I recommend you contact a mortgage broker to assess your needs and find the most suitable product and lender. Good luck and let’s unleash the ‘grey powerhouse’.

confidence issues and weight concerns and it takes on a whole new life,” he confided. Out of all the contestants David was the lightest in weight at just over 18 stone and the heaviest was around 36 stone. Mentor Mel helped guide the group to start accepting their bodies and become more body confident. “Now the show has completed filming I have fully embraced my body and all of its imperfections. I truly believe that you can learn to love your body and that everyone is beautiful, we just come in different sizes.

weeks, after some scary casting interviews, I was flying out to a tropical island in the Bahamas called Eleuthera. Excited but nervous I had absolutely no idea what was about to come,” said David. After being kept separate from the seven other contestants by show producers for 24 hours, David finally arrived at his destination - the world’s first and only Plus-Size Resort. “I was totally overwhelmed but decided quickly to just embrace it and enjoy every moment as I will never get this opportunity again.” Over the next 10 days, David spent every moment with his fellow ‘guests’ getting to know each other and tackling daily challenges such Yoga, Canoeing and even a Fashion Show. 64
