his issue has Christmas stamped all over it - and why not? It’s been quite a year. So if you feel baffled by Brexit, troubled by Trump and concerned
about climate change, sit back and contemplate some festive fun. If you fancy a night out, check out Lottie Maguire’s pub guide, p.26. Buying Christmas presents? We have a mini local gift guide, p.33. If it’s entertainment you’re after, then there are pantos galore in Emma Beatty’s
Culture Vulture column, p.58. John Worsey has written his annual Christmas story about a Father Christmas who’s life takes an unexpected turn, p.38. Once the festivities are over, it might be time to think about improving your health, fitness and wellbeing for whatever 2019 might have in store for us. We asked some local health and fitness providers to talk about their particular discipline, so that you can choose the right form of exercise for you, p.62. SEEING THE OPPORTUNITY
A good interior designer looking at a room for the first time never sees a problem just an opportunity. All of our designers at Design House have a trained eye for spacial awareness. A lot of customers find that the room they have been using for many years is no longer suitable for their needs, or the new style of furniture that they’d like to add.
Very often people feel that they are restricted by the age or the style of house. We look at the space and visually eliminate all existing items and colours. We then ask if there is anything personal or sacred that the customer would like to keep. It’s important to establish a focal point, this could be a fire place, a patio door or even a plain wall. We then search for products that suits the client and build the room back up, selecting fabric ideas for window treatme nts wall coverings, paint and flooring. We usually put together 2-3 schemes all of which will work in the room but with an emphasis on working to the scheme that the customer prefers. If you’d like Design House to help you see the opportunities within a room you are unhappy with, call in for an informal chat and perhaps take away some free samples?

MIND THE LADDER Neil Maxwell
T
he last of couple of months have been outstanding for both sales and lettings, with many more properties coming onto the market. The activity has stretched across all ends of the market, from garages and starter homes, to a large Thomas Owen house which sold within 72 hours of hitting the market.
This time of year sees the pressure to be moved into a new home by Christmas really heat up. As the property buying process is still caught between Edwardian legal processes, call centre hell, and a ‘the computer says no’ mentality, it takes a tenacious team with backbone to get these through. Thankfully, most of our business is handled by local independent solicitors who know what they are doing, and we are able to realise most people’s desire to move before the big day. The custom of putting Christmas lights on the exterior of properties always adds to the joy of Christmas, and there are several landmark properties who fully embrace this tradition, notably the house by the Good Companion on Eastern Road. Love it or loathe it, they help to diffuse the onset of a dreary winter, and I’m sure the hours that are spent 12
attaching the lights are well worth the cheer they bring to our communities. However, with my estate agent hat on, once Christmas is done, please take them down. There’s nothing worse than trying to sell a house in July when the house next door hasn’t dismantled it's Christmas Lights, causing our external photos to suffer from seasonal disorder. As we look forward to 2019, it is impossible to tell what winds of change Brexit will bring to our shores, but what I can tell you is that with good demand, and relatively few properties on the market, coupled with low interest rates, it is hard to see any immediate change to the housing market. Besides, Portsmouth being a fairly transient community there are always deals to be done. I was really touched to hear that I’d inspired several people to join the Parkrun community following my article in the Oct/Nov edition, but I was rather shocked to receive an invoice for a remedial sports massage from a newbie runner. So can I please make it clear that if you feel inspired to decorate the outside of your house with Christmas lights I accept no responsibility for any falls from ladders! Best wishes for the New Year from myself and everyone at Fry & Kent, with special greetings to all those we have helped move this year.

‘AN AMAZING PLACE TO LEARN’
Lowena Hull is in Year 12 at Portsmouth High Sixth Form, and talks about her interest in computing and technology which has opened up some incredible opportunities…
T
his summer I completed my GCSEs at Portsmouth High School, and have now joined the Sixth Form, where I am taking A levels in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics.
I have a special interest in computing and technology, and the school has been amazingly supportive in developing opportunities outside the classroom. In May, I spoke at the Cog X Artificial Intelligence Conference in London, on the impact of AI on the future of work. After this, I won a sponsored place at King’s College, London, studying robotics and engineering and then gained a place on the GCHQ Cyber First Futures programme at Imperial College where I learned all about cybersecurity. After entering a competition over the summer, sponsored by the BBC and Mastercard, in which teenagers worked in groups to develop AI products, my team was flown to San Francisco during October,
where we pitched to developers at Brighterion. Another highlight was being invited to speak at the World AI conference in Amsterdam as part of ‘Inspiring Juniors’, a collection of 10 girls in the UK selected to serve as role models to encourage more girls into technology. I was encouraged to apply for an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship by the Head of Careers at the school. The scholarship sponsors top students in the UK to develop their skills in engineering. Following selection, I am pleased to be sponsored by Stannah Lifts in Andover. I couldn’t have done all these exciting things without the support and encouragement from Portsmouth High School. Being able to extend yourself beyond the curriculum is vital in technology. Opportunities and a huge range of co-curricular activities on offer make Portsmouth High School such an amazing place to learn.

HOW THEATRE HEALS THE WOUNDS OF WAR Words: John Worsey
2
018 has been filled with echoes of war – from moving centenary reflections on the sacrifices made in the First World War, to ugly revivals of the anti-Semitism which partly fuelled the Second.
At the University of Portsmouth, Dr Erika Hughes uses theatre and performance to help communities heal the wounds of war. The Veterans Project, which played at the White Swan (behind the New Theatre Royal) in November, brings soldiers from the frontline to the footlights, to tell their own stories. It began because Erika's brother, himself a war veteran, was having a hard time talking about his experiences. Determined to help, Erika turned to her drama skills in the hope she could close this communication gap. This inspired her to create an entire performance series where veterans talk on stage, unscripted, about their time in the military. Erika says, “The magic of live performance is in being able to look at and experience other human beings as they truly are, in that moment. This pushes audience members to wonder, ‘Do I see myself in this situation? Or do I see someone I know in that situation?’ It puts their relationship with society under the spotlight.” Erika’s motivation to explore Holocaust theatre is, too, partially motivated by her family’s experiences. Her grandfather was a flight surgeon in the US Army Air Forces, and was among the first to help liberate Mauthausen concentration camp. When Erika’s family installed the internet, her grandfather’s first 18
request was to look up the camp. He gave his family a virtual guided tour and shared his experiences there. Intrigued by how drama reflects on the Holocaust, Erika began travelling to places where she could witness Holocaust theatre in person. She’s lived in Germany and Israel, and is now researching British performances. She explains, “Each culture uses the Holocaust as a way to tell stories about itself to itself, as much as anything else. For example, theatre makers in Germany are aware of both the terribly legacy of perpetrating this tragedy, and the country’s increasingly multicultural population. And so theirs is a very specific kind of theatre that tells Holocaust stories in ways that are less to do with hopeful narratives, and more about the tragic realities that took place.” Following the recent horrific shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, it’s clear that we must not make the mistake of thinking the Holocaust has no lessons left to teach us – nor of demonising those in the military who protect the freedoms we hold dear. Equally, we shouldn’t forget how the human spirit endures. On 30 January, the University hosts Dame Stephanie Shirley, who arrived in Britain as an unaccompanied child refugee, fleeing the Nazis. Her talk, ‘My Family in Exile’, reveals how she built an extraordinary life in her adopted country. It is sure to be a thought-provoking and hopeful beginning to a new year which promises further turbulence for our fragile world.

Parsnip Skordalia Serves 2 Skordalia is a Greek side dish of potatoes and garlic whipped into a dip, thickened with stale bread or nuts and spiked with lemon. This parsnip version is good warm with lamb or mushrooms, or at room temperature as a dip for pitta bread. Parsnips are less likely to go gluey than potatoes when blended. The pungency of raw garlic is all part of the appeal in the original dish, but we recommend you add it a little at a time and taste. 1kg parsnips, peeled and chopped into even sized chunks 1 bay leaf 400ml milk 60g fresh breadcrumbs 80g flaked almonds, lightly toasted 3–4 garlic cloves, crushed 80ml good olive oil juice of 1 lemon salt
Put the parsnips into a pan with the bay leaf and cover with the milk. Bring gently to the boil and simmer for 15–20 minutes, until very soft. Strain the parsnips, reserving the milk. Put the parsnips into a food processor with a dash of the milk and blend until smooth.Add the breadcrumbs, almonds and half the garlic and blend while adding the olive oil in a steady stream. Add half the lemon juice and a good pinch of salt. Check the seasoning and add more garlic, lemon juice and salt as you wish. If the mix is stiffer than you want, add a little more of the warm milk to loosen it. Variations: - Warm up this dish with a clove added to the milk, or pinch of cumin - Replace the almonds with toasted and skinned hazelnuts.

COOKING CHEF KITCHEN MACHINE
Our BEST ever Chef Mince Pie Recipe Preparation time: 20 - 30 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes For the mince mixture, add all the ingredients into a medium pot and bring to the boil and leave to cool at room temperature. Heat the oven to 180oC. To make the pastry, cream the butter and sugar with the paddle attachment, on high speed. With the motor running, add the egg yolk and mix until incorporated. Lower the speed to 1 and add the flour. Mix until dough just starts to clump, but don’t over work it. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured board, and gently work to form a ball. Roll the dough out to 5mm thick, and cut into circles 8.5cm in diameter. Line a muffin tray with the pastry discs and fill with mince mixture. Use a 5cm diameter star cutter to cut out stars of the remaining pastry and place on the mince pies. Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden around the edges. Leave to cool completely and dust with icing sugar to finish.

MISTER CHRISTMAS
A beautiful property, all set for an annual Christmas party and seasonal sparkle. Words by Kate Thompson. Photos: Derek Rodgers.
M
ike Hodges certainly knows how to celebrate Christmas with style. His beautifully renovated home in Southsea comes into its own at this time of year – and his traditional Christmas party where he and Dan open the doors to friends and neighbours has become a much-anticipated date in the calendar. “I started the party as a way to get to know my neighbours when I first moved here, and each year it has grown. “We have about 60-70 people coming now and each party seems to get a little bit grander – which everyone seems to love. “It started off as a bring-a-bottle party, then I started laying on Prosecco, and as things have progressed it’s now Champagne, and everyone dresses up to the nines.
“We hold it on the Saturday before Christmas – and since it has become so popular, we even have a marquee in the courtyard garden so we can accommodate more people. “People now say they’ve got their new dress for the party – it really has become quite a thing,” he said. Dressing the house for Christmas takes up to three days. There are two trees – one of which sits in the bay window and is the focus for many selfies. “I do love to make the house look
special at
Christmas, and I’m always searching for new items to add, such as giant icicles to give it the wow factor,” he said. As soon as Mike saw the former student property
31
that is now his home, he could see beyond the graffiti and neglect. “I have created a traditional look with fireplaces, cornicing, and I added panelling to the front room. I knew how I wanted the house to look, and I was able to design my own kitchen using the CAD drawing system I use to design gardens,“ said Mike, who is the award winning Head Garden Designer at Hambrooks in Titchfield. A soothing colour palette includes four variations of white in the sitting room, and pale green in the kitchen and garden room. “I didn’t want elaborate wallpapers, I wanted the structure of the house to stand out so I used colours that are quite tonal,” he explained. Mike revealed he has got itchy feet and is on the look-out for a home with a larger garden, but admitted it will be tough to leave the home he has carefully created – and his lovely neighbours. 32

THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE PIER Words: John Worsey
P
rofessional Santa, Richard Gwenn, has such an amazing story, I can’t add to it. So here it is, in his own words:
Fitted me like a glove, all the ‘ho ho ho’, making kids smile. Lizzie and me, we never had little ones of our own, so… Yeah.
“I had a good run, John. The plum Santa jobs start in May, believe it or not, with Christmas brochure shoots. In February, me and Lizzie would pack our suitcases and spend spring at our place in Tenerife. You’d want to put your feet up after all those months in the big black boots.
“Thing is, it’s hard to be jolly when… Sorry, it’s just… With my big waistband, I never thought Lizzie would be the first of us to go… Horrible disease, it is. So cruel and quick. And you can’t…
“When I turned pro, I never looked back.
“It’s just tough to be Father Christmas when you wake up crying. It’s hard to spin tales about the elves when the truth is, you live in

“I put a brave face on, of course. But that first Christmas, the closer it got, the lights in the shops and songs on the radio… I just couldn’t do it. So I cancelled everything. Shut myself in. Just sat there, on my half of the sofa, no Lizzie on the other side.

“On Christmas Eve, I couldn’t stand it. So I got in me car and drove, no plan, and found myself in Pompey, on the seafront. Got out, started to walk, and me legs took me onto South Parade Pier… Honestly, I think I was going to keep walking right off the end.
“He went, ‘Seriously mush, are you alright?’
“And then… The strangest thing happened… I know you won’t believe me. But there was a scrabbling, okay? A scuffling, from the shadows. Stopped me in me tracks. I called out, ‘Is someone there? Are you okay?’ “No answer, but I just knew. So I walked right over, into this dark spot where none of the lights reached, and that’s when I saw him. Quivering, he was, shaking like a leaf. He had part of his harness on, but it was frayed through. Must have happened mid-flight. “So there he was, this reindeer, and he’d caught a hoof in the boardwalk somehow. I said, ‘Alright mate, I’m here, it’s going to be okay.’ He looked right into my eyes. And he lit up. He glowed, just like they say about Rudolph’s nose, but all over. And I went, ‘That’s it, mate. You’ll be fine. You’re just a bit lost, okay?’ “I’d love to tell you I freed the poor soul. But I just said warm words and the next thing I knew, he pulled his hoof out, trotted up and licked me face, slobbery and full of love. Then he was up, up and away. A shooting star in reverse.
there? Are you okay?’ I pottered out of the shadows and there’s this feller with a fishing rod. He went, ‘Weee! It’s Father Christmas.’ And this laugh came out of me, ‘Ho ho ho!’ Right from my belly. I said, ‘I think I will be.’ He squinted at me and said, ‘Are you on your own?’ I got a bit choked up at that, even though I was properly jubilant about helping that poor trapped reindeer - a reindeer, on South Parade Pier, can you believe it? “Anyway, that was Rumal. Lovely bloke. Doesn’t really do Christmas, but he loves to fish. Took me back to his gaff, introduced me to the wife, made sure I got warmed up. Properly warm I was too, inside and out, first time in months. “It was after midnight when I got home. Christmas morning. I walked in the living room. Looked at Lizzie’s side of the sofa. And told her, ‘Love, I’m going to be okay.’ Then I pottered over to the window and looked up at the stars. Thought maybe I’d see my reindeer up there, flying past, all glowing. I didn’t. But I whispered ‘Merry Christmas’ for him, anyway. “And every time I say ‘Merry Christmas’ these days, it means more. Because I’m not thinking of mince pies and presents. I’m saying, ‘I know it can get awful dark. But don’t you forget how beautiful the light can be. Because sometimes people do. So let’s be the light for each other.’” 39

SOUTHSEA’S QUEEN OF QUIRKY GREETINGS
I
Kate Thompson
n a digital age when we are more closely connected than ever, it may come as quite a surprise to learn we still love to send greetings cards. Linzi Kelly, who runs the funky gift shop Southsea Rock in Marmion Road, Southsea, admits she was concerned that with the pervasive nature of social media, sales might be affected.
But she needn’t have worried, because people love the card selection she stocks – and it seems the more risqué, the better. “Someone said to me the other day that my shop is like Boots – you go in for one thing, and come out with a carrier bag full of goodies,” said Linzi, who has been running her shop for the past five years. As a nation, we buy more cards per person than any other country – an average of 33 per person according to the latest Greeting Cards Association Market Report. In 2017 the UK public spent £1.7 billion on greeting cards. And at this special festive time, it is worth remembering that nearly 100 million single Christmas cards will be sold – with 900 million in boxes. Linzi attends three trade shows a year, and has a network of around half a dozen agents who really know her taste and can let her see the latest designs for cards.
44
“You have to buy what you like. I do stock very rude cards that I wouldn’t dream of sending to anyone, but they do make me laugh, and people love to buy them,” she revealed. Having first worked at the shop where she now runs her business, Linzi leapt at the chance to make it her own when the previous owner wanted to move on. “It’s not like work really, it’s very sociable and 99.9% of the people are really nice, and they appreciate the fact that what I sell here is a bit different.” She always cuts a colourful dash on Marmion Road, and Linzi admits she loves to bring colour into all areas of her life. The shop is a positive riot, and her Southsea home is a real feast for the eyes. “As you get older, you get a bit more eccentric. I don’t like magnolia or beige at all, and love to surround myself with colour. I was in hospital recently, and when a friend rang to see how I was, I said ‘It’s awful – the walls are beige and blue,” she laughed. “Running a business in Marmion Road is great, says Linzi. “It’s the best road in Portsmouth, everyone is really friendly and we all look out for each other. “Growing up I always wanted to live on an island as far south as possible with my animals so being on an island city suits me fine,” she said.

PLANNING FOR THE BEST TIME OF YOUR LIFE

already started planning this next significant phase in your

So, if you feel yourself slipping into awfulizing, how can you overcome it? It’s personal to everyone, but there are two steps. The first is to take ownership of those things within your control. Sound financial planning and taking some professional advice should be at the top of this list, as without enough money for your retirement, your imagined fears may well end up as a reality.

BENEATH THE RIBBONS AND WRAPPING PAPER…
A
The Reverend Canon Peter Leonard
way in the manger, no crib for a bed… The words of this traditional carol which little children sing enthusiastically whilst wearing dressing gowns, with tea towels on their heads, presents an image of a warm and clean stable on a beautiful starlit night. In reality, the stable would have been dark, smelly and filthy. The animals would not have been gazing adoringly, but making unpleasant smells and noises. Mary would have been exhausted, Joseph bewildered. As for Jesus being woken by the lowing of cattle and not making a sound - he’d have screamed like every baby. It is very tempting to idealise Christmas into something which makes us feel cosy and festive. The reality is different for far too many people. The images of happy families, of feasts, of presents under beautifully decorated trees, are as remote from some people’s lives as ‘Away in a Manger’ is from that very first Christmas. In our city, there will be many for whom Christmas will be at best just like any other day, at worst a painful reminder of difficulties and troubles. In the words of Philip Alston from the UN who recently toured the UK, “Austerity has inflicted great misery on people.” He went on to say that despite being the world’s fifth largest economy, levels of child poverty are “not just a disgrace, but a social calamity.” People sleeping rough. Families with no idea where the next meal is coming from, who cannot give their children gifts because there is only enough money for bills. Lonely people who will spend another long day with no one to speak to.
64
Christmas is wonderful, to be celebrated and enjoyed, but maybe we need to focus on the carol’s last verse, about God being with us forever and loving us. For those that will find Christmas difficult, the presence and love of God can be felt through what we do to help make it a little easier, a little special, something to celebrate. Let’s enjoy the season, the carols and the warmth but, let’s also make sure that we share that with as many people as possible, especially those most in need.
