must have been an odd child, while other 12 year old boys were playing football or hanging out with their mates, I was collecting antiques. Within a year I had filled my bedroom with jumble sale finds, or broken furniture rescued from skips. My poor beleaguered parents, with no interest in such things, would be persuaded to take me on a tour of antique shops, where after much searching I’d spend my pocket money on a George III sixpence or a Doulton cup and saucer. But then, as often happens in youth, the passion waned and my treasures were quietly forgotten. So I was fascinated to hear about the life of John Cameron who has continued his life long interest in antiques and is often seen on TV’s Cash in the Attic, see p.44. We’ve also included a review of some of the city’s antique and vintage shops p.46.

IF THE SHOE FITS

Maricar Jagger, Events Officer at The University of Portsmouth

T

hree years ago Bethan Roscoe was so scared of auditioning for her BA (Hons) Musical Theatre degree course that she nearly didn’t go through with it. Luckily Bethan decided to brave it out, and now she says coming to study at Portsmouth was the best decision she ever made.

Musical Society’s annual show just felt like the next step. If the shoe fits, then wear it! Bethan is very excited to bring her version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella to life, especially on the stage of the New Theatre Royal. It’s a dream come true. She admits that when she goes to the theatre her eyes are always drawn to members of the ensemble. She prefers looking at the bigger picture, but doesn’t see directing as being superior to her peers. She sees the whole process as a collaboration. “I like to see what people come up with and then we work together to create something that all of us can be happy with.” “I’ve been part of a few amateur dramatic shows where the director gets angry at the cast, but I feel that this is not productive, and can knock the confidence of the performers when they are already taking part in something which makes them vulnerable.”

Bethan Roscoes. Photo by James Taylor

Braving it out seems to have become her motto, and at university Bethan began to try new challenges. She has since directed youth productions of Bugsy Malone and Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in her home town, and really enjoyed it. Directing the University of Portsmouth Dramatic and 8

Bethan is determined to try to keep the atmosphere as fun, light, and supportive as possible. Her fellow students have all come from different backgrounds, with different experiences and she thinks that if she can harness everyone’s strengths then they will have a really strong show. Cinderella will be performed at the New Theatre Royal from 28 February to 2 March, 7.30 pm each night and at 2.30 pm for the Saturday matinee. Tickets are available from the Box Office 023 9264 9000.

HALF TERM ADVENTURES Girl About Southsea

I

t’s not so long ago we were driving around the country to see various family members over the Christmas and New Year break. Now half term is upon us, and I feel as though we have earned this one more than most - a well deserved ‘week off’. With young kids this never happens, it's more a week of no school run - which is a treat in itself.

After driving nearly 700 miles during the last holidays, this February half term we are keeping it very local.

The girls love to be outdoors and have an abundance of energy when out in the fresh air. They love to climb trees, explore nature, use their imagination and be free and wild. Although we live in a city, there are many areas on the island that cater to adventurous kids and it never disappoints. Milton Common, Canoe Lake, Foxes Forest, the beach, Bransbury Park, Milton Park and Victoria Park are some of our favourites that always ensure a good nights sleep.

NEW YEAR NEW STYLE It is always a good time of year to refresh your home after Christmas, as the days become longer. The house looks a little emptier and the mass of colours and twinkly lights are no longer there. The old adage ‘out with the old, and in with the new’ is never more relevant than at this time of year. In January, all the leading design houses launched their new collections, including fabrics, wall coverings, sofas, dining tables and all the associated accessories. It’s also time for Peter and I to make our annual pilgrimage to all the best interiors shows including, Maison et Objet and Decooff Paris, The Furniture show and the Spring Fair Birmingham, followed by London Design week in early Spring. One of the most intriguing aspects of the trade shows is to see the latest colour and style trends, and I’m always rather baffled as to how each design company, shrouded in secrecy, can come up with the same colours and styles as the next, and yet each design house will also look quite unique – it all goes to creating the latest ‘New Look’ for the year. We then have the exciting job of whittling down the vast options and choices at the shows to bring you the latest Design House trends for 2019. Do call in over the next few months to see what we have selected.

STREET TALK Neil Maxwell

M

ost new years resolutions are forgotten by January 2nd, but here’s one that’s relatively easy to keep going… shopping locally. The news before and after Christmas has been filled with gloomy retail sales reports and potential shop closures, but you don’t have to look any further than your local high street to see retailers are struggling. I don’t think it’s something as a community we can ignore for much longer, before our high streets, as we know them, are lost forever. I get that sitting at home and clicking on the mouse is easy, it doesn’t involve parking your car or even walking, but there’s huge benefits to throwing on your coat and visiting the shops.

You might bump into that long lost friend, so forgotten you can’t even remember whether you last saw them in person or on Facebook. The exercise of just walking around is beneficial and if you haven’t cycled for ages, get that bike out and go into town. The superb variety of stalls that were in Palmerston Road in the run up to Christmas were a source of so many varied presents that I would not have even thought to search for on Amazon. I brought them home in my bag for life with a sense of excitement, knowing I wouldn’t have to wait in for an enormous box filled with plastic packaging that couldn’t be recycled. The number of independent shops has declined, but generally their USP is that they offer products that you won’t find elsewhere, plus the money stays in the community. Take Southsea Rock as a great example of a quirky 18

shop with products that you definitely won’t find on the shelves in a major department store. Victoriana and Design House Southsea offer fantastic varieties and unique products, whilst Barbara Tipple and Young George offer such unique jewellery. Let’s not forget the outstanding Buckwells butchers, where fresh produce and attention to detail is absolute. But apart from anything else, our shops look great and add enormously to our daily existence. It’s in our own interest to keep our high streets not just viable, but positively buoyant. Yes, our high streets need to change to embrace the competition from the internet and there is much talk of our high streets increasingly becoming centres for leisure and entertainment, but we also have to play our part in keeping our retailers in business. Perhaps if anyone can help show us the way forward, we need look no further than Sir Thomas Lipton (1850 1931). His innovative solutions took retail in the UK by storm, his ideas and energy are still relevant today. There’s lots of information about him on the internet!

away from having black and white wallpaper from Warwick, and high shine white laminate floors sourced from High Wycombe,” said Daisy.

A self-confessed Southsea obsessive, there was no doubt in her mind where she wanted to live and when it came to the look and feel for her new abode, she knew her home would be furnished with pre-loved and funky items that reflect her outlook on life.

When she bought her property, it was in a terrible state and needed ro be completely gutted.

“I love bold – I am obsessed with black and white. It’s so simple and it makes other items placed near it really pop. I love to wear black and white and stripes so when it came to making an impact on my walls, I didn’t shy

Daisy has carved an award-winning career creating fashion from recycled material. She has collaborated with Dior, and was named Radical Designer of the Year. “It all started because I didn’t have the money to get a prom dress, so I made mine out of a couple of bin bags and some magazines. “It’s been the same with my home. Everything I have in here I’ve done myself, or absolutely scrimped to save for it. “My fridge is just a regular model, but I’ve covered it in copper sheeting. “My favourite thing is a magazine rack in the bedroom that I made myself, and a bookshelf going across the mezzanine - it seems to just float there and looks so cool,“ she said. Having since moved her business out to another studio, Daisy admits she loves the clean, calm space she has created as a home. 22

“My studio where I work is the complete opposite. It’s a total mess – organised chaos. “When I come home, I love it because it is clean and simple. “I really love living in Southsea. There’s nothing like going and just looking at the sea, walking through the Rock Gardens, and then coming back to my home,” she said.

ictorious Festival (23-25 August 2019) – the UK’s biggest metropolitan festival – has revealed some of the talent that will grace the award-winning festival on August bank holiday.

Saturday sees a smorgasbord of delights including Brit Award winning singer/ songwriter James Bay, stunning Swedish garage-rockers The Hives and purveyors of high-octane indie rock The Rifles.

Genre-defining Two-Tone legends The Specials play the opening night. With a career spanning more than 40 years, a bag full of hits and still as energetic as ever, it’s safe to say Friday night will be party night!

On the bill for Sunday is the multi-award winning electro-classical fusion sensation Clean Bandit and The Vaccines – a guaranteed festival highlight with their infectious brand of pop-rock.

Said festival director Andy Marsh: “We wanted to spread a little festive cheer by revealing just a smattering of what we’ve got in store for next year. It’s already shaping up to be our best line-up up to date, we can’t wait to announce the rest of it!”

FILM

‘B

Stan and Ollie UK & Canada 2018 Director: Jon S. Baird Cert PG

rit’ Steve Coogan and ‘Yank’ John C. Reilly mirror the original duo in this biopic of Laurel and Hardy’s last tour of the UK in 1953.

Coogan and Reilly both give excellent depictions of ‘the boys’, and the re-creation of 1950s Britain still in the grip of post-war austerity feels very authentic. However they do say that the ‘Past is another country’ and that theme, as well as ‘things changing and life moving on’ runs right throughout the film. It is sad to see these two former superstars being left behind by a changing world. Stan and Ollie is not a ‘warts and all’ hatchet job on the comedy duo. It is a tender, sometimes melancholic, but always reverent portrayal of the dynamics between the two, as the struggle to come to terms with the loss of fame... and fortune, as the world moves on. The genuine

affection shown to them and their films from the past is depicted well especially from Ireland. I think some of that affection is still held nowadays, as I, and many of the greyhaired audience that was there to see the film went out of interest and affection. I realise that I am not of the generation that actually went to watch these Laurel and Hardy shorts when they came to local cinemas in the 1930s (flea-pits my mum used to call them), but I watched them on the BBC and ITV of the 1960s as I grew up Times have certainly moved on. That particular style of naive slapstick comedy has gone out of favour, but

RETAIL IN 2019 Rebecca Coghlan from the Regeneration Team at PCC

A

s you will know from press reports, the past year has been extremely challenging for retailers, both large and small. Portsmouth City Council is taking every measure to support traders, and to ensure the continuation of vibrant high streets across the city. We work closely with Albert Road and Castle Road Traders, creating interest and increasing footfall through events and activities. We support traders in other locations too of course, and in time we are hoping to find a way of establishing a single body of traders to represent all retailers in Southsea. We are keen to engage with stakeholders in the retail areas - agents, property managers and landlords, as well as business owners so that we can build an accurate picture of retail in the city. Work has started on the Future High Streets plan. And we are looking at potential funding for all retail areas of the city.

We strongly believe markets are a great way of drawing people into retail locations, supporting the bricks and mortar businesses. We have a wide range of exciting events lined up for the year ahead. We have a new market provider in Southsea alongside the Love Southsea, Hampshire Farmers and Antiques & Collectables markets. Bert’s & Gert’s, see the panel opposite for details. We hope you will continue to enjoy the markets, while also supporting local businesses in the high streets in 2019. Shrove Tuesday or pancake day is on 5th March this year. If your pancakes are less than perfect then try our foolproof recipe. Makes 8 crêpes 125g plain flour Pinch of salt 2 eggs 315ml milk 3 teaspoons butter, melted Vegetable oil for cooking Lemon juice and sugar or Nutella Sift flour and salt into a bowl. Make a well in the middle and add eggs and a splash of milk. Beat, working in all the flour. Beat in the rest of the milk and the melted butter

Heat a little vegetable oil in a 17.5cm pancake pan, barely covering the base. Pour in 2 - 3 tablesp oons batter, tilting the pan so the batter covers the base thinly and evenly. Cook on a high heat for about 1 minute, until lightly brown underneath. Turn the crêpe with a palette knife or turner and cook the other side for about 30 seconds. Remove from the pan and keep warm, then repeat until all the batter is finished. Serve with lemon juice and sugar or Nuttella.

erendipity has proved to be an essential ingredient in the recipe for success being created at the Portsmouth Distillery. Founders Vince Noyce, Giles Collighan and Dich Oatley have brought gin production back to Portsmouth after an absence of nearly 200 years, and at the same time, have established the first ever rum distillery in the city.

It was a love of rum that prompted former Royal Navy officers Vince and Giles to create the Rum Club Ltd, and the next step was to produce their own rum. “The ‘ginaisence’ that has occurred over the last five years has opened the door for artisan

production of spirits. “People are prepared to pay a little more for an artisan spirit, and that has come about because of the explosion in gin sales. “Before you would have typically paid up to £25 for a bottle of gin from the supermarket but now people see the added value of paying between £30 to £45 for a hand produced gin. “And that certainly helps when it comes to making rum, because it is a lot more expensive and time-consuming to produce than gin,” explained Vince. While it takes up to 38-hours to make gin, five

weeks is needed to create rum. The team has shown its commitment to the distillery business by planning to produce rum that will be aged in wooden casks for up to five years. Having decided to set up their own distillery, finding the right premises was key. “We didn’t want to be doing this in a lock-up on an industrial estate. It had to be somewhere with a story and a bit of history,” explained Vince. With the help of Portsmouth City Council and Historic England, The Portsmouth Distillery Co. found its home at Fort Cumberland at the entrance to Langstone Harbour. Two casemates, brick, barrel-vaulted rooms where artillery would have been stored, have now been transformed. “The fort was used as a military base until the 1970s. During World War II, the Royal Marines anti-aircraft artillery was based here,

and, coincidentally, Giles and myself specialised in anti-aircraft warfare,” said Vince. Being based within such an imposing structure has influenced everything, from the design on their gin bottle label (a pentangle mirroring the shape of the fort) and the names of both their gin and cask-aged rum products. “We are really proud to be producing our gin in Portsmouth, and on the label, you will see the city crest and the legend ‘Portsmouth’s Dry,’” he said. “Being at Fort Cumberland has influenced so much about how our business has developed. We are the first commercial operation to be based here, and we look forward to seeing other creative businesses making their home here too. “It is an amazing place to be – surrounded by history, but also building a future.” 41

THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GAVEL

W

Kate Thompson

hen it comes to being proud of your roots, TV antiques expert and auctioneer John Cameron has probably done more than most to promote the delights of Southsea.

“And then we had a Queen Victoria Naval General Service Medal that made £25,000, because it had three bars on the ribbon – and one of the bars had only been issued to 12 people,” he explained.

As one of the regular stars of the much-loved BBC series Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, John often mentions Southsea and many of its characters.

“The day of the sale, with people bidding in the room, by phone and online, is an intense but exhilarating experience, admitted John.

“People from all over the country have told me they know where I’m from as I always feature my home town.

“We have 600 lots to get through on the day, and will typically have 100 lots an hour. If we keep to that pace, we can ensure people won’t lose interest.

“For me Southsea is unique. I often describe it as being like a patchwork with all sorts of different people living alongside each other in a bohemian area. You’ve got the quirkiness of Albert Road and Castle Road, the history of Old Portsmouth and the old ships in the historic dockyard, and not forgetting the beach and views across the Solent. “With Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, we had a bit of production freedom to showcase ourselves and Southsea is such a visual place, it made sense to me to share that magic,” said John, who is also a presenter on Bargain Hunt and Cash in the Attic.

“My assistant Daniel has been with me for five years. He used to be in a band with my son, but I managed to persuade him to swap the guitar for a gavel. “My school friend Brad does all the photography, so we are a close-knit, family-type firm,” he said. Being a recognised TV expert has definitely helped John’s profile and many people only choose to sell precious family heirlooms if John will be wielding the gavel. But he has never forgotten his childhood growing up on an estate in Portsmouth, and helping his grandfather with his fruit and veg market stall.

John has had an association with DM Nesbit and Co, the fine art auctioneers in Clarendon Road for the past 25 years. He worked as an unpaid intern while studying for his degree in Fine Art Valuation at Southampton Solent University, and joined them full-time after graduating. John’s area of speciality is militaria, and he admits he loves the stories behind the items that pass through his saleroom. “One of my favourite pieces recently was a submariner’s watch by Rolex, which was really interesting for serious watch collectors, and that made £50,000. 44

6 TIPS ON NOT LOSING MONEY FROM YOUR PENSION

K

eeping track of your pension can be difficult at the best of times, and if you have multiple pots it can seem nigh on impossible.

Introduced in 2012, auto-enrolment made it compulsory for UK employers to automatically enrol their staff into a pension scheme, unless they opt out. For each new pension you are charged between £20 - £80 in admin fees. With the average worker changing jobs 11 times over a lifetime that adds up to a substantial sum. Here’re some simple steps to avoid these extra charges:

u Avoid

having more pension pots than necessary. If you change jobs, see if you can transfer your old pension to your new workplace scheme. Some employers will be happy to make contributions to your existing pension pot. If so, keep that one going and avoid any extra charges. v Be mindful of where your money is. Never take it for granted that the fund your employer provides is the best one for you, your pension could be growing more elsewhere, with fewer charges, or a better investment return. w Remember to notify pension companies if you move

house. If you have multiple pension pots, it is easier than you think to lose track of a pension fund, especially if the company can no longer contact you. x Use the government’s pension pot finding service. The government has an online service that allows you to find contact details for your own workplace or personal pension scheme. You can access this here www.gov.uk/find-pension-contact-details y Check back through your paperwork. Most pension providers send an annual statement that includes the current balance of your pension, plus a projection of how much your pension will be worth on retirement. When you find the right document, you can contact the pension provider to update your details. z Get in touch with your old employers. If you think you have lost a pension pot, contact your old employers straight away. They should be able to help you find the details of any lost pension. Keeping track of your pensions can, at times, feel overwhelming. Do feel free to get in touch with us directly if you have any questions around this topic.

February and March. Art all about the sea, and travel, and roads… by Emma Beatty

he Printmakers Council was set up in 1965 to promote new developments within printmaking by a group of artists including Julian Trevelyan (whose work is currently on show in Pallant House, Chichester). It is still going strong, and some 70 members are sending work to Jack House Gallery (19-30 March). The works have all been made new for the show on a theme of ‘Journeys’ interpreted in many ways, from the personal to the physical. They range from fantastical visions of moonlit flight, to Samuel Palmer-esque pastoral country lanes.

The Soup of Souls by Pete Codling. Pictured above is the detail from the top section of panel dedicated to those lost swimming or misadventure in the Solent. This section is 1m x 1.5m. the total size is 3m x 4m

You might have seen Peter Codling’s monumental charcoal drawings in the window of Jack House Gallery last month. Now, there's more new work by this exceptional local artist – eight huge panels on show in the Anglican Cathedral on Portsmouth High Street (through 58

February and March). Codling has been working right high up in the cupola in the Belfry tower for the last few months. This small dome was once used to announce the arrivals and departures of ships from the harbour, and Codling was struck by thoughts of all those lost at sea. Each of the panels is dedicated to a particular story from the Solent such as The Mary Rose, The SS Mendi, navy sea burials, and local fishing accidents. The New Theatre Royal also celebrates our mysterious briny depths in its Festival of the Sea (11 Feb-2 Mar), with a diverse range of live and digital performances. They include Frogman, a “coming-of-age drama and supernatural thriller that uses live performance and virtual reality headsets”, (14-16 Feb). It centres, intriguingly, on the Great Barrier Reef, a coral expert, and a child’s fish tank. The Guildhall’s new studio space has another quirky piece of theatre in The Shy Manifesto (20 Feb) “a bittersweet coming-of-age comedy-drama about a shy boy who’s had enough of being told to come out of his shell”. He delivers his manifesto, exploring adolescence, isolation, selfloathing, and sexuality, and encourages his audience of radical shy comrades to rise up and inherit the earth (about time I say). Radical shy or not, if you love staying in with a good book, Portsmouth BookFest 2019 is back (18 Feb-10 Mar). Organised by the local library service and Hayling Island Bookshop, it has some 20 events: writing workshops, author's talks and more, such as the poetry and

prose open mic event (18 Feb 7.15pm) at Hunter Gatherer on Albert Road. Budding piano players make a date for 5 Feb, when acclaimed concert pianist, Margaret Fingerhut, is at Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral playing favourite pieces by the likes of Chopin, Grieg, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninoff, as well as a new piece by Kurdish Syrian composer Moutaz Arian. It’s the second gig of a British tour to raise funds for the ‘City of Sanctuary’ initiative that supports refugees – a subject close to Fingerhut’s heart, she says, as her grandparents settled here from the Ukraine, Poland, and Ireland. Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra has three concerts coming up at the Guildhall. On 28 February it plays ‘superhuman’ pieces, namely, Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra, followed by Beethoven’s C Major Piano Concerto and his Third Leonore Overture. Then, on 15 March, it

brings big cinematic melodies by John Williams and Hans Zimmer– from Star Wars to Harry Potter, and Pirates of the Caribbean (probably a good one to inspire potential young musicians). On 21 March, BSO turns to English nostalgia with Elgar’s Cello Concerto and then Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia. And finally, how often do you think about roads? Those feats of civil engineering under our whizzing cars? Aspex Gallery in Gunwharf has a new exhibition, Formation Level, all about our streets, avenues, highways, and motorways. It’s produced by former civil engineer-turned-artist and filmmaker Amanda Loomes (until 24 March), who has brought together short films documenting the labour and materials used in road production, as well as drawings and diagrams, some from her own time as a civil engineer.
