s a lad I remember rugby tackling a boy who was shooting magpies with an air rifle. To be fair, he felt he was doing good, as magpies do predate on other bird’s eggs and chicks. Whereas one could argue, that we should interfere with nature as little as possible. Regrettably, humans have been interfering with nature for thousands of years, and now the chickens, or maybe the magpies, have come home to roost, and we now face a climate change emergency and huge species loss.
54
I therefore thought the very least we could do is to reflect these issues in our editorial content. Neil Maxwell talks about us taking responsibility for the environment, Sarah Nunn writes about plastic litter and Tobi Stidolph has written a short piece about music festivals and their green credentials. In case you are wondering, Southsea Lifestyle is published on paper from sustainable forests and it’s printed in Portsmouth. We are planning more articles about the environment for future editions, so if you want to tell us what you are doing to mitigate your impact upon the environment please get in touch, see below. L
eaving his home town of Hull in 1980, Dave Small joined the Royal Navy and spent most of his 24 year Navy career in and around Portsmouth. He's seen great changes in the city, particularity when it comes to diversity. Dave was in ebullient mood when I met him at 113 Cafe, freshly returned from a honeymoon in Corfu, having recently married his partner, Manuel, on the top viewing platform of the iconic Spinnaker Tower. Manuel’s family, from Gran Canaria, Spain, some visiting the UK for the first, were blown away by the whole experience. Everyone involved in organising the big day was so helpful, supportive, and accepting. As someone who has worked in promoting equality and inclusion, this was really important to Dave. After leaving the Navy, Dave joined the Portsmouth City Council before eventually working for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) campaigning charity Stonewall in London, working across the region to support and develop LGBT inclusion within the workplace. Then the Equality and Diversity job came up at the University of Portsmouth, just when he was ready to end his years of commuting to London. Dave loves his job at the university, where people have the freedom to express their individuality in a very supportive environment. They can discover who they really are, and yet there are people to talk to and societies available for like-minded friends. A great networker, Dave has ensured that the
10
University is in tune with what is happening in the community. The University is sponsoring this year’s Portsmouth Pride event to be held on Castle Field on 22 June. Dave is proud to see that members of the Portsmouth Pride organising committee include students, past and present, highlighting just how key the University family is in taking forward a message of inclusion and diversity within the city. You might find Dave proudly wearing his rainbow lanyard, a campaign he and his team ran in support of LGBT History Month in February this year. We talked about how much this has become the symbol of support
for
the
LGBT
community. The demand from across the university was so high that 1000 lanyards were given away, five times more than the 200 he started with. The enthusiasm from so many people to get involved, and Dave Small
their messages of support, was so heartwarming, and really shows how far we have
accepted LGBT equality over the years. Dave confessed to being an enthusiastic collector of vinyl, and of spending far too much money on records. It’s no surprise that one of his favourite hangouts is Pie & Vinyl. Both he and Manuel also love the diversity of shops and restaurants in Albert Road, and living just around the corner, it is their favourite area to socialise, drink and eat, as they enjoy their new life together. LIGHTING CREATIVITY IN PORTSMOUTH A collaborative project between Anglepoise & students from The University of Portsmouth.
T
he Portsmouth based company Anglepoise set a live brief for their new 90 Mini Mini desk lamp to students from the University of Portsmouth studying a Digital Photography module in The School of Creative Technologies. Over the course of the year, students were able to borrow a lamp and photograph this in a location and style of their choosing. They needed to tell the story of their lamp in the final outcome, and use it as a prop. This could be used in shot to light a person, piece of work, room/table or even outdoors at night. Students were encouraged to be unique and show the product in a different way.

WELCOME HOME Words by Kate Thompson
C
raig Duffy’s home, on a quiet Southsea street, has got to be the city’s most rock ‘n’ roll house.
The former pub, dating back to the 1890s, has been transformed into a beautiful, light and airy home with period features lovingly preserved. A lifetime spent in the music industry, meant Craig had accumulated some fascinating ephemera and he needed a big place to be able to display his musical memorabilia – and he knew straight away that the Taswell Arms was the home he had been searching for. “I looked at a few places where I was living in Chichester but then as soon as I walked into this building, I knew I had to have it. “It looked imposing and was in a brilliant location,
18
100 yards from the centre of Southsea, but off the main roads. “I loved the scale of the building. I didn’t want a house like every other house – I wanted something quirky and different,” he said. He was in a position to be able to buy it for cash but had no money left to do the conversion. He re-mortgaged his house in Chichester and moved into one of the bedrooms in the pub while building work commenced. “I lived here for eight months with no TV, no cooker and I barely had a bathroom. I had a battered old fridge and a toasted-sandwich maker all shared with the builders and to begin with I thought I would live on takeaways but after a week you soon get bored with that.“ “When I got a Foreman grill and a microwave I was sorted for months,” he said.
19
Spending so much time in the space meant he could see how it would work as a home. He marked out the new kitchen area in beer crates and scrap timber, formulated how the dining area would work, as well as how to create a music room that would be the envy of anyone with a love of vinyl. His stunning home has a large open plan entertaining space on the ground floor, five beautiful bedrooms, solar panels on the roof to help with its green credentials, an original air raid shelter in the cellar, a yard for enjoying private outside space, and its location means Wimbledon Park and the seafront are moments away. “I recently met the daughter of the landlords who had the pub from 1940 to the ‘80s, and she showed me where she used to sleep during the air raids as a four-year-old,” enthused Craig. As you would expect from someone who has been tour manager for everyone from The Damned to Damon 20
Albarn’s Gorillaz, Blur, and The Good, The Bad & The Queen, Craig has fitted a wicked sound system which allows him to play music all over the house. Taswell Arms has been witness to some amazing parties since Craig took up residence. After a year as a building site, the work was completed in time for his 50th birthday party, when among others Simon and Yasmin Le Bon served behind the bar. The Damned, Gorillaz, Stiff Little Fingers, Inspiral Carpets and others have dropped by for pre- and post-show drinks Craig captured every stage of the transformation in photos and a book – and now as he prepares to move on to pastures new, the next owners of the Taswell Arms will receive their own copy of this book as part of the sale. “I am really proud of what we have achieved. I worked with a great team of local builders and craftsmen, and feel we saved a beautiful Southsea building that might otherwise have been lost to flats,” he said.

DOING IT FOR OURSELVES Neil Maxwell
Y
ou might remember that the government pledged to make all new homes zero carbon by 2016. That was 3 years ago and not much has changed since. Which is highly regrettable, because without pressure from authorities house builders have little incentive to use greener methods of construction, and ultimately build zero emission homes. Meanwhile the UK’s environmental flagship scheme to insulate the nation’s homes was abandoned in 2013, along with The Green Deal improvement loans, to help householders fund a new boiler, or install cavity wall insulation. It’s all too easy to see this lack of will by politicians in the UK and abroad to tackle climate change as a reason to do nothing ourselves. But don’t take my word for it, Mahatma Gandhi was thinking along the same lines when he said, “You may never know the results of your actions, but if you do nothing there will be no results.“ Changing our home energy systems can be expensive of course, but using different formats such Solar photovoltaic panels, with energy storage solutions are becoming increasingly practical and effective. Switching to an air source heat pump, instead of a gas boiler has saved several of our clients a lot of money, not just in lower costs, but also meaning they only have to pay for electricity - with no gas bill and less emissions. Being close to the sea, individual wind turbines could be effective, but probably too

hazardous and noisy for our neighbours. It’s not so long ago that I remember going to the shops and everything being wrapped in paper, or in paper bags, which is perfectly biodegradable compared to the endless plastic packaging we have today. But I understand Waitrose have brought forward plans to make all of their own brand packaging, reusable, recyclable or home compostable from 2023. They have already removed the 5p carrier bags from their stores, they are introducing more loose fruit & veg and are replacing single use plastic bags with home compostable alternatives. Or forget supermarket shopping altogether and buy from your local fruit & veg shop, fish monger or butcher who can wrap your purchases in paper, or fill your own reusable container. I spend a lot of time both on the water and under it, and it is shocking the scale of plastic cups, stirrers, bottles and other detritus that is floating on the surface, or rolling with the current across the sea bed. Having taken part in several recent beach cleans I couldn’t help myself, whilst diving recently, returning to the surface with plastic cups an old snorkel and a plastic milk crate. Without wanting to sound like a school teacher, it’s time to change our behaviour. And we all can play our part, whether it’s buying a reusable water bottle, using the car less, reducing our energy consumption, eating less meat, not littering, taking holidays in the UK,...the list is almost endless and even overwhelming, but if we can’t rely on our governments, lets start doing it for ourselves.

POMPEY PLAQUES
T here are over 30 plaques in Portsmouth that have been attached to buildings across the city. Architect Mark Harris investigates.
T
he original blue plaques are administered by English Heritage, and were commissioned by the Society of Arts in 1866. From 2000 to 2005 English Heritage extended the blue plaques from London to a select number of provincial cities, including Portsmouth. Emma Gough, press officer for English Heritage, explained “Portsmouth was chosen due to its naval history and its diverse range of historical figures from Rudyard Kipling to Peter Sellers”. Emma also stressed that the importance of the blue plaques was to “highlight the links between people and places that would otherwise go unnoticed”. Generally, the plaques are awarded posthumously, with the detailed criteria varying for each award body. English Heritage has
strong links with the conservation of historical buildings. Their plaques are only eligible for buildings that are still intact from the time of the awardee’s residence. As Portsmouth was severely damaged in World War II, this has limited the number of English Heritage plaques, hence the notable exclusion of Arthur Conan Doyle, although Portsmouth City Council have awarded the author a plaque on the site of his former home in Elm Grove. English Heritage allows members of the public to make a nomination. Other schemes may rely on lobbying or campaigning, such as the one led by Alderman Terry Hall on behalf of the scientist Hertha Ayrton, who lived in Queen Street and led to a blue plaque being given in 2018. So, if you consider that someone has been historically neglected, there is often a process in place to have them recognised. Although blue plaques are also subject to planning permission for listed buildings and buildings in conservation areas. Besides the well-known figures, such as Charles Dickens and Peter Sellers there are many plaques that have equally fascinating stories and are often in unexpected and incongruous places. In the meantime, Here’s a handful of my favourite plaques.. For more information on the awardees, please visit or contact the History Centre at the Central Library.

George Vicat Cole, Artist, 11 Pembroke Road, Southsea The famous painter (1833 - 1893) one of the most popular landscape painters of his time, was born in this house. Known for his paintings of the southern counties, Cole became a member of the Royal Academy in 1880. Today his work is widely soughtafter. The handsome Georgian townhouse is still largely unchanged from Cole’s tim,e and features a unique Hampshire styled bow window. Hertha Ayrton (Portsmouth City Council), Scientist, 6 Queen Street, Portsea Ayrton’s plaque was unveiled last year after a public campaign. Her original home was destroyed in WWII and is now occupied by a 1960s apartment block. Born Phoebe Sarah Aryton (1854 - 1923) in Queen Street, and is one of the foremost scientists in history, helping to make key advances in electronics. Ayrton registered 26 patents, and was the first woman to be nominated as a Fellow of the Royal Society.
Kathleen Marjorie Henderson, Badminton player, 103 High Street, Old Portsmouth Born and bred in Portsmouth (1905 - 2000), she won the All England Badminton Championships ladies doubles on four occasions (1933 to 1936) and represented England six times. Henderson was also known for her daily swim in the sea at Old Portsmouth. Located opposite the cathedral, the building is a typical non-offensive post-war building with redbrick and mock Georgian features.
Commander Norman Holbrook (English Heritage), 18 Grove Road South, Southsea Holbrook (1888 - 1976) served as a lieutenant, he was the first submariner to be awarded the Victoria Cross. The award was for his bravery during the Dardanelles Campaign of the First World War, where he sank the strategically important Turkish battleship Mesudiye. Holbrook’s childhood home is a handsome Victorian stucco three storey house that is now part of St John’s College.
Nevil Shute Norway (Portsmouth City Council), Aircraft designer and novelist, 14 Helena Road, Southsea The author and aviator lived at this large Edwardian villa with its
mock Tudor features, between 1936 and 1940. Shute (1899 - 1960), originally an aircraft designer, he was responsible for the A100 Airship and Airspeed Courier. Not content with this successful career, he wrote over 20 novels including A Town Like Alice and The Lonely Road, many of his books have been adapted for the screen. Next door to Shute’s plaque at 12a English Heritage awarded a plaque to Commander Edwin Unwin VC (1864 – 1950) for his distinguished naval career and bravery during the First World War.

John Westerman also followed in his father’s footsteps as a children’s author. Westerman lived at this handsome Victorian terraced house with its period feature glazed veranda between 1880 and 1900. Another notable Campbell Road resident was Rudyard Kipling, whose childhood home between from 1871 to 1877 can be found at number 4.
Sir Alec Rose (Portsmouth City Council), 38 Osborne Road, Southsea In 1968 Sir Alec Rose (1908 - 1991) became the first person to complete a single-handed voyage around the world when he landed at Southsea beach. Earlier this year, a new plaque was unveiled at Rose’s former greengrocer shop and home that he shared with his wife Dorothy. Sir Alec also has a plaque at the Isle of Wight Hovercraft terminal.

A CLEAN ACT
A
Tobi Stidolph takes a look at Music Festivals and the environment
s the headline act finishes it’s final set, and people hurry to leave the arena, the sea of plastic bottles, cups and even tents left behind after a festival, can be staggering. At a time when we are facing up to climate change and species destruction, a few days of fun leaves behind, what can only be described as a massive biohazard. Fortunately, the UK festival scene is trying to tackle the problem head on. One organisation, A Greener Festival, an environmental, non-profit, which is now in its twelfth year, has recently hosted their annual awards ceremony, highlighting 35 festivals from 14 European countries for promoting sustainability. A winner of an Outstanding Award this year, was Hampshire’s Boomtown Fair. Initiatives this year include a site wide
ban on all single use plastics and a collaboration with WaterAid UK to provide free water refill stations. Every street food trader on site will also have to provide non-plastic disposables for its customers. Victorious Festival is also a plastic straw and polystyrene free site and operates a closed loop cup recycling system - after cups have been used, the cups which are returned to recycling points are collected and recycled into second-life materials. The glitter stalls may only use biodegradable glitter. Caterers must use biodegradable/recyclable serve wear, stirrers & cutlery and no single-serve condiments. This is a great start to what has to be a massive change in the way how festivals are managed and festival goers behave, but what’s even better is people are finally talking about it.

COCKTAIL A-GO-GO AT THE QUEENS HOTEL
R
egulars at the Queens Hotel will notice cocktail duo Matthieu Pagniez and Miroslav Mirchev (Mario) have an extra spring in their step.
and Mario push their boundaries, work very hard and to see them putting their new skills into action. I feel like they ‘own the bar’ now and I couldn’t be more excited to see them evolve,’’ said Farid.
The dazzling duo have just returned from a 3day masterclass in Mallorca – and they can’t wait to show off their newfound skills.
The Queens Hotel Summer Garden Parties are only weeks away and this year money raised from donations will support the transformation of the Southsea Skatepark.
While all the coverage so far has focused on the £7 million refurbishment of the building, Queens Hotel owner Farid Yeganeh knows the value of investing in his staff and he was delighted to send them to the Mediterranean holiday isle to train with cocktail maestro Stefano Di Carlo. ‘’It has been an absolute pleasure to watch Matthieu
“We are delighted to support our local charity, Southsea Skatepark Trust, as part of our Community Hub activities,” added Farid. Read more about Matthieu and Mario’s cocktail adventures in Mallorca on the blog by visiting www.queenshotelportsmouth.com

PERFECT PICNIC
I
Sarah Nunn
n Southsea, our beach is an iconic landmark. Whatever the weather, whatever the occasion, there will always be people enjoying the sea air and the pebbles beneath their feet. While we’re busy enjoying our ice creams or going for a Christmas Day dip in the water, something more sinister is happening on Southsea Beach that we just can’t ignore. Every day, approximately 8 million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans. We all know the terrible impact of plastic on our precious marine wildlife (we’ve seen the David Attenborough documentaries), but what can we do to help with this growing problem? Two-thirds of ocean plastic comes directly from landbased sources, including litter left on the beach. Rainwater or wind carries plastic waste dropped in the street into drains or rivers - which flow into our oceans. Whilst we can’t do much about a cargo ship losing a container overboard, or badly managed landfill sites, we can all help on some level when it comes to litter. There’s nothing better than gathering friends together on a sunny day and heading to the beach for a picnic. Many of us wouldn’t dream of leaving behind
our carrier bags, sandwich wrappers and empty cans of cider, but, unfortunately, some people do. This summer, I’m making it my mission to be a little more eco-conscious with my picnic parties. I’ll be packing my basket with potato salad in a Tupperware box, homemade sandwiches wrapped in beeswax wraps, and a reusable bottle filled with Pimm’s. Whatever snacks you decide to pack, the most important thing is to bring your rubbish home after the fun is over. It sounds simple, but it’s so necessary for the protection of our scenery and wildlife, and it’s so often forgotten in the midst of a good time. There will always be someone who doesn’t abide by the rules, and whilst it shouldn’t be our responsibility to pick up after other individuals, the time has come for us to take the future of Southsea Beach into our own hands, both by trying to reduce our use of plastics, and in the form of local beach cleans. Whether you join an organised event, or just head down to the seafront on your own, picking up the litter you find as you stroll along the beach is a peaceful and pro-active way of reducing human impact on the ocean, while enjoying your surroundings at the same time.

A NOVEL IDEA FROM JIM
Southsea-based quantum physicist, author and broadcaster Jim Al-Khalili has blended science fact with science fiction to create his thought-provoking first novel, Sunfall. Kate Thompson spoke to him about letting his imagination run wild.
C
oming from an evidencebased, scientific background, you can hear the thrill in Jim Al-Khalili’s sonorous voice as he describes being given the opportunity to embellish the truth.
While all the science is based on fact and could come true, the world he creates in Sunfall is drawn from his imagination. Jim admitts he loved having the freedom to create a techno-thriller that includes everything from environmental concerns and cyber-hacking to global politics. “I’m used to writing nonfiction and being in explainer mode. With this book, I wanted to get the science right, but not have it get in the way of the storyline. I’ve created a possible future, and there’s nothing in the book that isn’t feasible,” Creating his characters and seeing how they developed was a new experience for Jim, who is the current president of the British Science Association. “I took on a different persona,” he confided. “I created an imagined universe; it was my own creation, and I had the power of life or death over all my characters. “And it was fascinating to see how my 40
characters became three-dimensional and took on a life of their own.” The idea for writing a novel came about as Jim was celebrating the launch of a previous book, Life on the Edge. “My publishers asked me what I was planning next, and having just written basic popular science non-fiction about things like relativity, quantum physics, and the history of science, I said maybe I should try my hand at fiction. “And before I knew it, I had a lunch date in the diary to discuss ideas for my new novel.” Up to that point the only stories Jim had ever made up were for the delight of his kids and he had never done a creative writing course. “It was a steep learning curve. Luckily, the editor who took me on was prepared to roll up his sleeves to help me. “I enjoyed the thrill and the action and I’m glad I read so much by Stephen King in my younger days,” said Jim. His editor was invaluable when it came to building characters and painting a picture with words. He taught him basic rules, such as ‘show not tell’, and being mindful of the point of view he adopted for telling the story from the perspectives of different characters.
As joint chair in physics and the public engagement in science at the University of Surrey, Jim admitted he had to plan ahead to find the time to write Sunfall. “I couldn’t slot in a couple of hours here and there, I had to look ahead in my diary and block off several days at a time. “From start to finish, it has taken three years to complete. It had to fit in around all my other activities, and go through many iterations, working closely with my editor,” he said. Feedback from colleagues in the world of science has been positive so far, and Jim confessed he had drawn on his access to some of the greatest scientific minds, to help him tell the story. “I happen to sit next to the world expert in dark matter, so all the stuff in the book about dark matter is speculative, but possible. “Alan Woodward is an expert on cyber security, and the BBC go to him for comments – luckily for me he is also a mate, so I could run past him all the stuff about hacking. “And one of my main characters called Sarah is based on a real-life solar physicist, Professor Lucie Greene. It was great to check ideas with her, and it was really nice that she confirmed that what I had written was exactly the way she would have carried out her research.”
COMPETITION If you would like the chance to win a signed copy of Sunfall, simply answer the question below and email your name and address to info@southsealifestyle.com by Friday June 21.
QUESTION: What is the name of Jim’s longrunning weekly Radio 4 programme?

he run up to summer is often a time when we begin to take ownership of our physical health and wellbeing. Along with the longer days and the sense of motivation that seems to come with the sunshine.
the courtyard at LANO Southsea is the perfect space for basking under the gentle sun rays.
However, it can also be difficult to escape the trends of getting a ‘summer body’ and becoming ‘holiday ready’; ideas that are often attached to views of negative self-image. The notion that warmer weather means that we must suddenly strive to fit swimsuit ideals isn’t sustainable and doesn’t promote lasting change or a shift towards more authentic self-care. The issues with these approaches is the short-lived nature of these kinds of fast-track, quick-fix diet and exercise programs. Instead, take an alternative approach: Prepare you summer body in a different way that utilises more well-balanced and sustainable growth. Join us to make an exciting shift towards lasting change and the long-term benefits of physical movement and mindfulness practice. LANO is a multi-style yoga studio, where we like to offer a varied schedule of classes that range from fully restorative to more strength-based, challenging styles of practice, so that taking regular yoga classes can be a sustainable way to exercise and supplement other physical activities. And the best part? There’s always choice. There truly is something for everyone - whatever your age, experience, fitness level or movement history, there is a class bound to deliver exactly what you need to maintain a healthy body and mind. We have both a heated and unheated studio, and now a brand-new outdoor area. Complete with a decked platform for yoga practice outside,

D-DAY AND SOUTHSEA
James Daly, of Portsmouth City Council, describes Southsea’s role leading up to D-Day and local soldiers who later died in combat.
P
ortsmouth played a crucial part in D-Day, and Southsea was particularly important.
The preparations for D-Day began long before June 1944. The seafront was closed off from 1943 onwards - people who lived near the seafront had to have a special pass to leave their houses. The beach itself was closed off with barbed wire for most of the war. Thousands of troops boarded landing craft from South Parade Pier, the Camber, Portsmouth Harbour Station and what is now Portsmouth International Port. Local people watched them marching through the city, and no doubt wondered how many of them would come home again. 27 men from Southsea were killed on D-Day and
46
during the Battle of Normandy. Among them was Private Stanley Anslow, aged 27, who lived at Bush Street East. He was killed on 6 August 1944 serving with the 7th Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment during Operation Bluecoat, when the 43rd (Wessex) Division captured Mont Pincon during the Battle of Normandy. He is buried in Hottot-les-Bagues War Cemetery in Normandy. Before the war he worked as a plumber’s labourer. Since the end of the war Portsmouth has become the place where Britain comes to remember D-Day, with Southsea Common being the focal point. Southsea is also home to the D-Day Stone, which is opposite South Parade Pier. The D-Day Museum opened in 1984, and re-opened in 2018 as The D-Day
Story after a £5m lottery-funded transformation. Now, in June 2019, the eyes of the world will be on Portsmouth as the city plays host to the national commemorations for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. As part of Portsmouth’s programme to mark the anniversary Portsmouth City Council will be installing panels around the city to mark the homes of the 118 men from the city who were killed between D-Day and the end of the Battle of Normandy. These include 16 year old Private Bobby Johns from Stamshaw, a paratrooper who was killed in July 1944. He is believed to be the youngest British soldier killed during the Second World War.

Barbara Tipple recalls her first visit to the V&A as a student, and how the museum has recently acquired a piece of her jewellery.
W
hen recently asked by the curators of the Victoria & Albert Museum’s Jewellery Gallery to donate a piece of her work, Barbara Tipple felt as though her life had come full circle. "As a foundation student at Portsmouth Art College in 1971, I happened to visit an exhibition at the V&A of contemporary jewellery. It was that lightbulb moment; I knew without a shadow of a doubt that being a jewellery designer was my destiny,” said Barbara. Later as a student in her first year at Hornsey Art College, Barbara won her first, prestigious Diamonds International award, which drew attention to her as an up-and-coming designer. A client generously donated a pair of Barbara’s earrings to the V&A Jewellery Gallery. They are a fine example of gold inlay work into mild steel. The design was commissioned by the World Gold Council, and was the very first of Barbara’s Night and Day collection. Twenty-five years later, a new range of Night and Day jewellery can be found in her showroom in Marmion Road.

“We are so fortunate to have such an amazing array of museums, art galleries and exhibitions in this country to inspire every generation to come. The V&A Jewellery Gallery in particular has one of the most comprehensive collections of jewellery in the world and is without a doubt my favourite. I am very happy a piece of my work is now permanently displayed there.” said Barbara.

QUEEN VICTORIA’S TIARA On delivering the earrings to the museum, Barbara was invited to examine Queen Victoria’s tiara, recently acquired by the V&A for the nation. “I felt privileged to handle such a historic piece. Prince Albert designed it himself and commissioned Joseph Kitching to make it, which cost the princely sum of £415.

CULTURE VULTURE
June – D-Day, English Oysters and the Royal Ballet, by Emma Beatty o say that Southsea is in D-Day fever might be stating the obvious. The Queen (and, yes, President Trump) are due on
5 June for a major national commemorative event on Southsea Common. Heads of state from around the world will salute veterans, now in their 90s, whose bravery and ingenuity paved the way for the liberation of Europe 75 years ago. The veterans are due to cross the Channel for Normandy once again in a grand flotilla – reminding us of Portsmouth’s historic role and its fundamental relation to the sea that surrounds it. Security will be high and large areas of Southsea Common will be closed to the public. However, the events will be shown live on BBC, with large screens alongside. Later that afternoon there will be a flypast above Southsea Common by the Red Arrows. In the evening, MV Boudicca departs Portsmouth with 300
D-Day veterans on board for their trip to Normandy to represent the famous crossings that took place 75 years ago. Hundreds will gather to watch as it sails past. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard was bustling last weekend (1-2 June) to commemorate the anniversary but there’s a slew of happenings all over the city . The City Museum has a one-off display of 12 new portraits of D-Day Veterans, commissioned by Prince Charles. Artists include: Paul Benney, Clara Drummond, Catherine Goodman— all students from the Royal Drawing School, one of the prince’s charities. Also on display is work by local portrait artist Karl Rudziak (including his portrait of local veteran John Jenkins, on loan from Portsmouth FC). The show runs until 1 September. Across the water in Gosport a new contemporary gallery has opened, The Yellow Edge Gallery. A not-for-profit, high street gallery, they plan to show a mix of local artists, artists from other parts of the UK and abroad. St Mary’s Church has a D-Day concert (8 June) to celebrate the 75 years of peace in Europe, with a visiting a capella choir from Caen, the Normandy city

that was at the centre of the D-Day operation, all but destroyed by allied bombing. Southwick, the charming Hampshire village just over Portsdown hill, was the planning hub for Operation Overlord where Churchill, Eisenhower and Montgomery devised their strategy. It holds an annual D-Day revival but this year’s is extra special (8-9 June). Visit the D-Day map room, listen to the Military Wives Choir, watch the Royal Navy Cadet Field Gun Challenge in Squire’s Paddock, and see World War II military vehicle displays and motorcades. The New Theatre Royal has its main D-Day event on 9 June. British and French performers mix drama, comedy, and song in a variety show led by Portsmouth comic Tom Swift. Once the D-Day commemorations die down, there’s still lots to celebrate about our unique island city. Not least, the Portsmouth Seafood Festival in Gunwharf (28-30 June) reminds us of the amazing natural harvest in our seas, and the work of the local fishing community. Celebrate the Solent’s finest catches, and see local seafood chefs in action. The Fisherman's Kitchen & Southsea Beach Café – two brilliant new fishy additions to our city’s food life – will serve up local produce alongside live music and events. Portsmouth festivities, the annual summer arts festival, is in its 20th year, also celebrates our seafood culture. Guildhall studio has Poisoned Beds a “story of personal liberation, votes for women and the death of the English oyster industry” (20 June). Take a picnic and a folding chair and head to Guildhall Square to watch the Royal Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet (11 June) in a live feed from the Royal Opera House. And, then, get your best picnic rug out for an outdoor performance of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream (13 June). The New Theatre Royal brings its performers off the stage to leafy Gatcombe House Park, just opposite Roko on the Copnor Road. It’s performed by an all-male cast with Elizabethan costumes, music and dance. Quite a Southsea summer to look forward to!

NEW HORIZONS
A multi-million-pound investment in Portsmouth International Port is set to put the city on the global cruise map and further boost the city’s coffers in the process. . Kate Thompson found out more when she interviewed Director Mike Sellers.
“O
ur ambition is to become a major cruise and ferry port. We want to double the current 50 cruise calls in the next two years, and increase the number of in-bound passengers from France and Spain using ferry services,” explained Director Mike Sellers from his office overlooking the port. From the moment he set foot on the port, he could sense the untapped potential. His career to date had seen him work in ports on the east coast, and he honed his skills in the private sector. “I’ve been in ports all my life and I could see
straight away that Portsmouth had the potential to be quite a significant port. “While the port is successful, and currently brings in £8 million to pay for council services, it hasn’t been ambitious enough, and there is an opportunity to bring in even more money to the council,” he said. In February, the council agreed a £19 million investment package that will pay for the cruise berth to be levelled and extended, as well as upgrading the terminal building so it can deal with increased passenger numbers. “The changes to the berth will mean we can accommodate cruise ships that are 253m long, compared to 240m, which is
what we can currently take. “Those few metres make a great deal of difference. Currently we have ships with an 800 passenger turnaround and with the extension, we will be able to take ships with a 2,000 turn around capacity. “We are not trying to compete with Southampton, where they can take the megacruise ships. For example, bringing Saga Cruises to Portsmouth is one of our ambitions, and we have another exciting target that I’m not able to talk about currently.
“With the new cruise berth, we will lay ducting so we can move towards shore power. Brittany Ferries have one ship arriving this year that is powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), and three more ferries will be replaced with LNG powered vessels. “We are exploring the possibility of switching to electric buses to transport passengers to and from the terminal and, installing fast charging points for passenger vehicles as well,” he said.
“We are looking to take tourism, transit calls and small ships rather than international turn around cruising,” said Mike. He believes Portsmouth has plenty to offer cruise visitors, and both local attractions and hotels will benefit from the tourism boom. Over the recent Easter break, Portsmouth International Port was chosen as the first UK port to debut Viking Cruise Line’s latest ship Viking Sky and Ponant’s mega-yacht L’austral made a maiden call on Easter Monday. But Mike is also aware of environmental concerns over increased traffic at the port and in particular air quality issues. His ambition is to attract government funding under the Maritime 2050 strategy to enable the port to become the UK’s first zero emissions port.

D-DAY – a personal note As Portsmouth plays host to the D-Day 75th anniversary events, Mike revealed a close family connection.
“By 2020 all shipping has to comply with new lower emissions targets, and all ships are becoming much greener.
“We are proud to be playing host to who will depart from the port, carrying 300 D-Day veterans to Normandy, escorted by the Royal Navy.
“We are building on some great work that has already happened here. Our terminal building has fantastic sustainable credentials and we are looking at how energy can be generated in the port.
“On a personal note, I’ve only recently discovered my grandfather was in the first wave who went over to Caen – we owe them all a huge debt of gratitude for what they did,” said Mike. 65
