limate change, climate emergency or environmental degradation - take your pick, they all amount to the same: we have messed up our planet and we have to fix it.
10
Over 1,000 people recently took part in the Global Climate Strike protest at Guildhall Square on 20th September, along with millions of people across the globe. Uniting with Greta Thunberg, who recently spoke so movingly at the United Nations about how the “older generation had stolen her dreams and her childhood”, we felt it was imperative to make climate change our cover story. Inside, a range of articles touch upon sustainability, while John Worsey has written a wry, philosophical piece about how we can each move to finding a greener way (p.40). We also asked three local environmentalists for their take on the crisis and for ideas about what we in Southsea can do to try to reduce our impact upon our beautiful planet (p.38). We don’t want to stop the discussion here, so tell us your thoughts and what you have done to reduce your impact upon the environment: email info@southsealifestyle.com or find Southsea Lifestyle on Facebook.

s the football fans make their way along Goldsmith Avenue, another installation of Portsmouth’s quality street art can be seen raising a glass to all that pass by. Painted on the wall of City Plumbing, this drunken sailor sports the obligatory Pompey tattoos, a city crest on his shirt, and an HMS Victory cap on his head. “The image is very popular with the fans. Quite a few people stop to take a selfie, which is just the effect we hoped it would have.” says
Mark, from City Plumbing. “Previously, the wall was constantly plagued by undesirable graffiti, so when the T-shirt guys at DrunkenSailor offered to have one of the local graffiti artists paint an interpretation of their design on the wall, we were more than happy to give them the goahead. I think it really brightens the place up…it certainly makes me smile.”. The original T-shirt is available from www.DrunkenSailor.uk

AUTUMN STYLE
t a time when we are all trying to live more sustainably, it’s important to be considerate about what we buy.
As we transition into Autumn, rather than completely clearing out your whole wardrobe and starting again, why not invest in a few key pieces that can be mixed and matched and integrates with your old favourites. These items will see you through many years to come if looked after with care. For example: • A neutral long sleeved turtleneck or roll neck, which can be worn underneath a summer dress or shirt • A blazer, looks great teamed with jeans, smart trousers and floaty dresses • A good quality white shirt, can be smart, casual and even work on a night out teamed with (faux) leather trousers and heals. • A (little) black dress, perfect for any occasion, can be dressed up or down and there is a style to suit all shapes and sizes. Emma of Thrive with Style can help with: Personal styling and image makeovers, wardrobe decluttering a n d c o l o u r consultations. Fees are affordable and can actually save you money – helping identify your personal style will mean you only ever buy clothes that fit, flatter and make you feel fabulous!
Or get together with a group of friends for a Style Party, it’s a fun way to all find out your style personalities, body shapes, discover the perfect fitting jeans for you and get wardrobe decluttering tips. LETTING THEIR WORLDS COLLIDE Kate Thompson
W
hen creative Southsea couple Nia and Tim Hobbs decided to set up in business together, they knew it was time for their worlds to collide. A talented florist with a passion for the natural world, Nia could instantly see the synergy that resulted from joining forces with her fashion designer husband. Luvshifting.com is the result and a global audience is now snapping up their range of silk kimonos and scarves created from the material they design in a subterranean studio in Southsea.
10
Tim is perhaps best known as a barber but when he’s not styling men’s hair, he loves nothing more than to create fabulous fashion garments. Each brings their individual talent to the cutting table and together they develop delicious, bold designs that are turning heads. Far from being the least bit twee, their eyecatching designs include quirky additions that might see industrial items, faces, and techie paraphenalia among the eye-popping blooms. Wedding clients can have their flowers captured on silk and made into a kimono and
parts of the deconstructed aircon unit. “The shape of the terrarium influenced the angular garments we made, evolving into a deeply coloured, prism-printed bodysuit,” explained Nia.
the designs can also be used for ties and pocket squares. Not content with simply creating a small scale online business, Nia and Tim regularly let their creativity flow on conceptual designs that allow them to smash through the boundaries.
With orders for bespoke garments and designs becoming a regular occurrence as well as their lucrative wedding work, the duo have their eyes set on designing an installation with supporting merchandise at one of London’s top museums.
They tackle themes such as light pollution and the effects of air conditioning, letting their imaginations take them on a journey of discovery. Sophia, their latest project, was inspired by a trip to New York, when among many vast and inspiring sights, the pair became strangely and utterly fascinated by air conditioning units. Nia takes up the story: “Hooked onto buildings and protruding like bizarre futuristic limpets, we started to think about what types of plants could possibly survive in that environment. “Turns out we weren’t the only people to ponder - there is a piece of research by NASA all about it: Interior Landscape Plants for Indoor Air Pollution Abatement was produced in 1989 and provided fodder for our inspiration.” For the design, they conceptualised taking an old air-con unit apart and having plants climbing all around it. They created a terrarium and attached components and 11

BLOSSOM BOUTIQUE
n September, Blossom Boutique celebrated its second year in business. “It has been both a challenging and exciting two years,” said Blossom’s owner Ava Fraczak. “I’m very lucky to have lots of loyal customers, who love what I do and like to support the business”.
Ava is currently celebrating the excess of Autumn with a window filled with seasonal plants and fruits. “I want to inspire customers with ideas for floral decoration: a simple vase of flowers can look stunning, but there are also so many other possibilities”. Blossom is also getting ready for Christmas, and Ava has bought in some charming Polish ceramics, vases and decorations, along with an impressive range of realistic artificial flowers. And in November, Ava will be running her 3rd Christmas wreath making workshop. With so many exciting ideas it looks as though Blossom Boutique is going to be around for many years to come.

THE SUMMER OF 2019
W
Neil Maxwell
hat a fantastic Southsea Summer we’ve had, great weather, triathlons, fetes and festivals. Including the Victorious Festival – which just gets better every year.
In June, Portsmouth became the centre of the world’s attention during the visit of so many Western leaders. My abiding memory will be of two Chinooks, escorted by Apache gunships that suddenly appeared in the sky like a scene from Apocalypse Now, which landed in clouds of dust on Castle Field as I was wandering by.
part was when he and another survivor, Major Hasler, finally walked into the British embassy in Portugal. Major Hasler was given the red-carpet treatment, whilst Bill was sent on his way to Gibraltar - where he was promptly arrested as a deserter and sent back under arrest to the UK. Talking of Europe and the dreaded B word, I’m pleased to report we’ve had a busy Summer and sales have held up very well. The only wobble we’ve seen was the early part of September when Parliament returned with the news of prorogation, filling the media and bringing a lull to proceedings which has now recovered with activity across the price ranges. In July we said our final goodbyes to Knight & Lee. For those present on the last day it was obvious how affected members of staff were at the closure of our beloved department store. But it was a dignified end, and the Rock Choir outside did much to make the final closing of the doors a very memorable moment.
Years ago, I had the honour of spending a day with Bill Sparkes who was the last surviving Cockleshell hero, whilst taking part in a TV programme. I asked him if he felt the sacrifice his teammates had made was worth the society we have today? He answered yes, because you and I have the liberty to make this programme and to go home without fear of being arrested because of our faith, creed, or colour. Bill’s story of escaping back to the UK from occupied France defied belief, but the funniest 14
Knight & Lee also made a fantastic gesture to us at the RNLI in buying 34 pieces of a jigsaw puzzle at £175.00 each, that we’re selling to raise money for our desperately needed new D Class lifeboat. With the new planning application in place, the plans for the rejuvenation of the Knight & Lee building look amazing. To think that it may soon be home to a 3 screen cinema, hotel, small retail units, co-working spaces and a gym seem incredible, but it will, I’m sure, ensure that the building and Palmerston Road have a special place in Southsea’s future for years to come.

WELCOME HOME
Interior designer Tracey Hewitt is the latest Southsea resident to throw open the doors for our Welcome Home feature - and her beautiful abode does not disappoint, Kate Thompson reports.
H
aving been responsible for styling some of the most delightful homes in Southsea over the past 15 years,
the opportunity to check out Tracey Hewitt’s own property was just too tempting. As one of the interior designers based at Design House Southsea in Marmion Road, Tracey admits she has really enjoyed helping her clients to create rooms that reflect their personality and play to the strengths of their property.
Stepping over the threshold, it’s clear Tracey and husband Gordon have really enjoyed creating a home for their sons Joshua,9, and Thomas,8. The blue/green palette thay have used throughout calms and caresses. Walls are brought to life with the addition of striking artworks - many of which have been created by local street artists. “We moved into this house 10 years ago. I was pregnant with Josh, but that didn’t stop me getting
started on the hall, stairs, and landings. “And Josh was only a month old when I stripped and painted the living room. Since then I’ve decorated pretty much every room, and now we’ve come full circle, and I’ve started putting wallpaper up in the top of the house,” enthused Tracey. A textile designer by training, Tracey admitted she just loves to see the latest fabrics and items coming into Design House Southsea - and many have ended up in her own home. “I love my job, and I am constantly changing and adding items to my own home - it’s my job but at home it is my hobby as well.
see why. She has created an oasis of calm that works perfectly with the scale of the room and the light that pours in. But there are other details she likes too. In the study on the top floor, the main wall is covered in a daring Cole and Sons panel from their geometrics range.“It was too large for the wall and I was concerned about having to cut it. “I get inspired by other people’s homes, and I’ve been lucky enough to work in some beautiful homes over the years. “I love nothing more than re-purposing something that we already have - our kitchen chairs have been repainted so many times - and upcycling charity shop finds,” she said. A top tip from Tracey for anyone considering changing their homes around or re-decorating, is to photograph your room as it adds a different perspective. When asked to declare which is her favourite room, Tracey opts for the master bedroom - and it is easy to Photos: Charlotte Griffiths
“But I realised I could use what was left over in the hallway, and I’m really pleased with how it worked out,” she confided. Artwork by My Dog Sighs, LosDave, M-one, Fark Fk and Roo Abrook makes a statement, and Tracey has also been encouraging her clients to consider local artists. “We really enjoy collecting and commissioning local artists. It’s important to support our local talent . “Southsea is such a great place to live, and part of what makes it so wonderful is our independent shops I am a real champion for them, and urge everyone to use them,” she added. 17
PROPERTY IS ABOUT MORE THAN BRICKS AND MORTAR
T
he recent sale by auction of a beautiful home in Southsea proved being in the property world is about so much more than just bricks and mortar for the team at Chinneck Shaw. “No 3 Cavendish Road was the home of a real Southsea character - Miss Sadie Howe,” explained Chinneck Shaw manager, Lizzie Burt. “Working in property is about so much more than just the buildings themselves - it’s about the relationships. “She was a client of ours and such a lovely lady. She owned properties across Southsea, and she clearly enjoyed a long and fulfilling life.” Friend and colleague, Mark Taylor, has fond memories of working with Miss Howe: “I got to know her because my father grew up living just around the corner from her. When she was older and she inherited quite a bit of property, she asked my father to give her a hand. “He worked the rest of his life with her, and when I left school, I joined him and I began helping Miss Howe too,” he said. During her early life she travelled far and wide including visiting Russia. She was also
18
an active member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. A strong character, Miss Howe was known for being outspoken, but she did have a caring side. “Her tenants were her family. The rents she charged very rarely went up, and she really enjoyed getting to know her tenants,” said Mark. Linzi Kelly, who runs the funky gift shop Southsea Rocks in Marmion Road, Southsea, was a tenant for 35 years with Miss Howe. “She liked me to make an appointment each month to pop round and pay my rent. I would stay for an hour or so talking about her garden, and she loved hearing about my family. “I asked her if she wouldn’t prefer it if I set up a direct debit payment but she wouldn’t hear of it. She told me she looked forward to our nice chats,” said Linzi. Speaking about the recent sale, Lizzie said: “With a guide price of £550,000, No 3 Cavendish Road was bought for £690,000. The new owners will be turning it into a beautiful home for their family and we think Miss Howe would be happy with that.”
We love property Looking after every aspect of property from buying and selling to letting and property management, is what the team at Chinneck Shaw just love to do. The independent family firm of estate agents and chartered surveyors has a great Portsmouth and Southsea pedigree. The firm was founded more than 100 years ago, and it is embedded in every aspect of the city. Proud supporters of Portsmouth FC, former director James Steele Chinneck was chairman of the club in the 1940s, and the company retains strong links. “We are known for our friendly and professional service. Our strength lies in the fact that we understand the importance of building relationships with our clients. “It’s all about people,” said Manager Lizzie Burt. Director Neil Shaw says he loves the challenge of running a commercial organisation, while at the same time creating an environment where staff are happy and where together they all strive to provide clients with the best possible service. ‘It only works if it all works’, says Neil.

TRAIN TO TEACH
ortsmouth City Council has reported the need to recruit 100 new teachers to the city to address the 1,000 extra pupils who will be joining our schools. Once again, the Portsmouth Teaching School Alliance (Portsmouth TSA) has had another bumper year for training teachers with almost 50 new School Direct trainees starting in September 2019 (25% increase on September 2018). Recruiting trainee teachers means the city can ‘grow their own’ teachers’, and address teacher shortages.
Lynn Nicholls, Portsmouth TSA Director of ITT School Direct said “We are extremely proud that we attract high quality trainees to our programme. Once again 100% of our School Direct trainee teachers passed this summer, and all gained teaching posts, the majority in local schools. This outstanding result is testimony to our partner schools and alliance trainers who provided excellent support in their training year”. Our strong track record means increased recruitment figures each year and has also been acknowledged by Ofsted’s initial teacher training inspectors who awarded us ‘Outstanding’ in all areas (November 2018). We also support our partner schools on the Isle of Wight and collaboratively train primary and secondary teachers on the Island. Moudood Hassan, from Portsmouth, who previously worked for the council in public health, trained to be a science teacher and is now teaching at Portsmouth Academy. He said “I am 20

pleased that I was able to train as a teacher through the Portsmouth TSA School Direct programme. While teacher training is generally an extremely challenging venture for anybody, I felt the scheme and school experience was highly effective. I’m well-prepared for my first year as a teacher, and look forward to helping improve the life chances of my students at the Portsmouth Academy.” If you are a graduate and want to train to teach then come along to one of our ‘Train to Teach’ events in the Teaching & Learning Centre in the Grounds of Portsmouth Academy, Cowper Road Portsmouth PO1 5LD on 15 October, 19 November, 3 December 2019, 28 January, 25 February, 24 March and 12 May 2019 from 16.30-17.30. RED BOX PROJECT HELPS GIRLS ACROSS THE WORLD
A project to ensure every girl has access to sanitary wear has led to a change in the law in the UK, and raised awareness across the globe. Joint founder of The Red Box Project is Anna Miles, a teacher at Mayville High School in Southsea, took part in our Face to Face interview.
Words by Kate Thompson
HOW DID THE RED BOX PROJECT START AND WHY? In March 2017, myself and three friends founded The Red Box Project. This followed reports in the media which exposed the connection between young women missing out on their education for the same amount of time, every month. The connection was then made that for some young people, access to menstrual products was not available to them and in many cases, this led to students deciding not to attend school because of the shame and embarrassment they felt.
state school in our founding city; an incredible achievement by our Portsmouth volunteer coordinator, Rebecca Cave.
WHAT HAVE YOU ACHIEVED SO FAR? We have affected real change in fighting for the rights of our young people through the recent announcement from our government in England to provide the support we have been delivering, from early next year. This is something which fills us with a huge amount of pride. Governments in England, Wales, and Scotland have made this commitment and so, whilst our projects based in the UK are beginning to slow down operation, we will remain open for our projects based overseas who are still fighting for this change. WHAT IS YOUR LEGACY? Standing up and fighting for equality can lead to real change. Our volunteer coordinators have worked unbelievably hard, on the ground, to make a difference, and they really and truly have.
Anna Miles
HOW SUCCESSFUL HAVE YOU BEEN? As soon as we launched, we received emails from all over the world. Together, we now have over 5,300 active red boxes, including every secondary and primary 22

PROFESSOR TURNED DJ
Maricar Jagger, Events Officer at The University of Portsmouth
“M
y 17 year old self probably wouldn’t believe that I would one day become a professor,” said Sam Warren when asked about her inaugural lecture which will be held at the University of Portsmouth in November. Born in St Mary’s Hospital, Sam grew up in Fratton. After quitting college at 17, she spent ten years working at various retail, sales and marketing jobs, got married and had two children before she found her calling through education. Sam took A Levels at night school when her youngest son was only 3 months old. Aged 26 Sam went on to do a degree in Business Studies at the University of Portsmouth as a mature student. She was given a free nursery place at Milldam and a small grant that made everything possible. Inspired by the support and teaching she received, she achieved a first class honours before winning a scholarship to do her PhD. After her first lecturing job at Portsmouth she moved to Surrey, where in the space of two and a half years, she won two research grants and was promoted to Reader. She took up her first Professorship in Management at the University of Essex before moving to Cardiff University as a Professor in 2015. But it’s love that has brought her back to Portsmouth
- her partner, whom she met through mutual friends, lives in Portchester - and after 3 years of commuting along the M4, she jumped at the chance to go back home when a Professorial post was advertised last year. Though she was sad to leave Cardiff, the universe clearly had it all mapped out for Sam. “Portsmouth gave me so much as a junior researcher, and now it’s my turn to pay that back.” Sam has always been interested in researching interesting and unusual aspects of management. Today, she is a leading researcher of organizational aesthetics, and is currently investigating female electronic music producers’ careers, while learning to produce music herself. Why women? Only 2% of music producers are women according to the most reliable statistics in the U.S., and at the recent Beatport Top 100 chart, she counted a whole 6 tracks by women. She’s really passionate about what she does. A long-time raver she recently learned to DJ (under the name of Dovetail). “I admire every single woman who has the guts to put herself out there in a male dominated industry and just do it.” When not researching, or making music, Sam is addicted to property shows on television. “A Place in the Sun is my surefire go-to when I need to switch off from reality!” said this person who practices what her artist friend Beatriz calls 'Bonito Living' - finding the joy and beauty in the everyday. Her favourite place is Eastney beach and the Coffee Cup. “Letting Eastney go back to nature, and the general smartening up of the seafront and pier is the best thing the City has done while I've been away!”

Nick Sebley of Extinction Rebellion www.rebellion.earth / Facebook @XRPortsmouth THERE ARE MANY ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES, WHAT WORRIES YOU THE MOST? Apathy. Fatalism. The
HOW OPTIMISTIC ARE YOU THAT WE CAN AVOID SEVERE CLIMATE CHANGE? We’ve just seen 5,000 climate strikes in 130 countries. Millions of people took to the streets. This gives me hope.
lack of political response to the scientific community. Few people seem aware of the facts – we want to change that.
HOW CONCERNED SHOULD WE BE ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE? It's like, you're in a tower block, and a fire has started on the lower floors. How concerned should you be if you live on the top floors and no one is putting the fire out?
THE UK GOVERNMENT IS WORKING TO ZERO EMISSIONS BY 2050, HAVE THEY GOT IT RIGHT? It's just greenlighted the largest carbon infrastructure project in Europe: the 3rd runway at Heathrow. I don't think they are serious.
DO YOU THINK INDIVIDUALS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, OR IS IT UP TO POLITICIANS TO TAKE ACTION? Individuals can green their own life and push for political change; they aren't mutually exclusive, but it’s rare for politicians to enact radical change without pressure from below. . HOW CAN WE MAKE POLITICIANS TAKE NOTICE? Vote. Campaign. Divest from fossil fuels financially. Join Extinction Rebellion.
SUGGEST 3 THINGS PEOPLE CAN DO TO HELP OUR ENVIRONMENT? People tend to sweat the small stuff, but there are 3 commitments that would halve most people's carbon footprint: a) Switch to a 100% renewable energy supplier [often cheaper than the Big 6]. b) Commit to reducing your intake of dairy and farmed meat. c) Give up flying for leisure. 38
Megan Howson of Friends of the Earth www.friendsoftheearth.uk/ Facebook @portsmouthfoe THERE ARE MANY ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES, WHAT WORRIES YOU THE MOST? Worldwide there are huge challenges, but in Portsmouth FoE, we are focussing on poor air quality. Car use is a major contributor, and we are campaigning for safer cycle lanes and routes for pedestrians. We want Portsmouth to double its tree cover, to be more creative about planting trees and flowers around the city. This will help absorb CO2.
HOW CONCERNED SHOULD WE BE ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE? We should be very concerned, particularly in our island city where flooding is a real possibility. FoE would like the country to aim for zero emissions by 2030 rather than 2050.
DO YOU THINK INDIVIDUALS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, OR IS IT UP TO POLITICIANS TO BRING IT ABOUT? Individuals can make a big difference.
However, the larger issues of domestic heating, transport, and local development all need legislation to go forward.

at zero well before that date, and the quicker we change, the quicker we can help others around the world do the same.
Politicians must be clear in their manifestos on how they propose to fight climate breakdown so people can cast informed votes.
SUGGEST 3 THINGS PEOPLE CAN DO TO HELP OUR ENVIRONMENT? Use cars less -- walk and cycle, use public transport. Recycle as much as you can. Buy UK-produced food to save air/ sea miles. The FoE website gives lots of advice.
HOW OPTIMISTIC ARE YOU THAT WE CAN AVOID SEVERE CLIMATE CHANGE? FoE is optimistic that when everyone understands the calamity of climate breakdown and its impact, they will accept change is necessary. The challenge is to persuade people of the need to change.
The UK government is working to zero emissions by 2050, have they got it right? I believe it needs to be
DO YOU THINK INDIVIDUALS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, OR IS IT UP TO POLITICIANS TO BRING ABOUT? Everyone needs to play a part; individuals, neighbourhoods, governments and business. HOW CAN WE MAKE POLITICIANS TAKE NOTICE? Talk to them (in person or electronically) and join protests, they need to know that voters want change quickly if they want our vote.
SUGGEST 3 THINGS PEOPLE CAN DO TO HELP OUR ENVIRONMENT? Share more (we need to buy a lot less) Get outdoors (touch, look and smell the amazing world that's around us). Join with others (share vegetarian recipes, plan holidays by train, share the school run on foot...)
HOW OPTIMISTIC ARE YOU THAT WE CAN AVOID SEVERE CLIMATE CHANGE? I’m more optimistic recently, as more people are becoming aware and are waking up to the crisis. Humans are creative, innovative, and caring - we can save our planet’s future together.
Clare Seek of Portsmouth Green Drinks, which holds monthly meetings to bring environmental groups and individuals together. www.greendrinks.org/ Portsmouth THERE ARE MANY ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES, WHAT WORRIES YOU THE MOST? I’m worried about the cumulative effect of all these challenges and how the poor around the world are affected.
HOW CONCERNED SHOULD WE BE ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE? Extremely concerned...humans have lived far beyond anything sustainable for too long, and

FINDING A GREENER WAY Words: John Worsey
I
t’s been another long, hot summer on the Costa del Portsmouth. And from record breaking temperatures in the UK, to natural disasters around the world, and the success of Greta Thunberg in igniting global debates about the future, it seems a majority of people (though sadly not President Trump) are united in the certainty that climate change is real - and action must be taken! Naturally, more and more of us are getting hot and bothered about the decline of our beautiful world. We’re desperate to make a difference. To do something positive, not sink into despair. One such group locally is The Package Free Larder. Over the summer, they successfully raised £43,765 through crowdfunding, to open a plastic-free supermarket and zero-waste hub. The Larder team are volunteers. They’ll run the supermarket as a social enterprise, with profits reinvested in the shop and community projects. The idea originated with Delphine Laveyne, who envisaged “somewhere people could find everyday staples with no unnecessary packaging, at affordable prices.” Delphine is passionate about resisting “pointless packaging - the type that ends up in the bin as soon as you get back from the supermarket. It’s used for 5 minutes but stays on the planet for 500 years.” So, how does a packaging-free shop work? “To start, customers will be encouraged to bring their own containers to fill and refill. Then, we’ll work with suppliers to see if we can find alternatives to the plastic packaging products are delivered in. We’ll also teach people skills
40
to help them reduce their waste and cook from scratch.” The Larder team are not alone. Across Southsea you’ll find a host of businesses offering produce either free of excess packaging, in recycled and recyclable plastic, or in refillable form. Ron White’s Greengrocers, Southsea Fruit & Veg, Buckwells Butchers, Viviers Fishmarket, Wild Thyme Wholefoods, Southsea Coffee, Southsea Deli, and Southsea Bathing Hut - to name just a few. It’s great that shoppers want to do their bit for the environment. But it’s important not to take the weight of the world on your shoulders. Especially because going green can come with shades of grey! For example… Throw away your single-use plastic drinks bottle and it will spend centuries as harmful litter before it degrades. But in rural areas of developing nations, without piped drinking water, those bottles can be the difference between life and death. Buy a reusable cotton tote bag for shopping, and you’ll be reducing the demand for throwaway plastic bags. But the emissions created in the manufacture and shipping of cotton totes are so much higher, you’ll need to use it thousands of times to compensate! Of course, plastic has some environmental advantages over other materials - from its emission-friendly light weight, to the recyclability of many types. Its durability and potential for reuse can ease the burden on landfill. It reduces waste by extending products’ shelf-life, and protects public health by keeping germs from foods, cosmetics, medicines and surgical equipment. So you can change your relationship
to plastic without having to get a divorce! Like climate change itself, figuring out your response to it can feel overwhelming. The most empowering thing is to educate yourself and make choices that are sustainable. Stop eating meat altogether? Never make another journey by plane… or car? Those activities impact hugely on carbon emissions. But maybe you can’t go cold turkey like that (or, indeed, turkey-free). Don’t make perfect the enemy of good. Instead, place limits that work for you. Delphine suggests, “Sign up to ShareWaste.com and drop your food waste off to someone with a compost bin, or register to collect other people’s compost for your own. Talk about reducing waste and the benefits of this with your colleagues, bosses, school teachers. A lot of the times if you see they can do things a different way that avoids waste at minimal or no cost, they will implement these changes. We should all help each other to reduce our waste.” Ultimately, living more sustainably is about kindness. It’s about being kinder to our planet and its resources. So let’s be kind to ourselves, too. Let’s seek balance and make changes we can stick to. Start with a visit to one of the many local businesses doing their bit to reduce single-use plastic - and look out for the Package Free Larder, which hopes to open by early 2020. If you’d like to find out more about Plastic Free Larder’s volunteering opportunities, find them on Facebook.

A small extract of the River Elbe flowing through Hamburg tells us that it has a metal road bridge 300 metres long with a load capacity of 60 tonnes, the river is 11 metres deep and flows at 0.8 metres per second. You won’t find that on an OS map! FILM
Once Upon a Time In Hollywood USA 2019 Director: Quentin Tarantino
L
ooking back on Tarantino’s past films we can safely assume that he spent much of his formative years in front of a TV and reading pulp fiction comics. That doesn’t necessarily make him a bad person.
Russell Baldwin
His TV diet obviously affected him greatly and his latest offering - his ‘masterpiece’ Once Upon a Time In Holywood focusses on this slice of Americana. Set in LA in 1969 it follows the plight of ageing TV actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo Di Caprio), known for his leading role in a long running TV Western series. He is in danger of being left behind by changes in his industry. He is accompanied by his buddy and stuntman Cliff (Brad Pitt) It also follows the path of the emergent actress Sharon Tate and her friends as they head towards their fate. That’s it really.
We watch these two characters, one fictional, one ‘real’ as they live out their lives in an amazingly re-created Los Angeles of 1969, full of gaudy bars, cinemas and the back lot of trash Western sets and old locations in the Hollywood hills (now occupied by the Manson cult).
It’s an engrossing tour. A humorous ‘Buddy’ movie. A glimpse behind the TV series that we grew up with and so central to the construction of the United States. There are many nods and winks to film and TV culture as the title suggests, the story telling and myth making. The final ten minutes confirm this. Great to watch, but as with all of his films, the ‘Prince of PostModernism’ delivers so much spectacle - made with so much skill, effort and money you come away wondering was it worth all that?

EMPTY BOWLS - PORTSMOUTH 6/12/19
F
or the third year, the Maker’s Guild Potters in Portsmouth are running the Empty Bowls project with St Simon’s Church in Southsea. By purchasing a £7.50 ticket you will be served homemade soup and bread, in a handmade bowl which you can select and keep. Last year the project raised over £1,300 and all the proceeds went to St Simon’s Church, who actively support the homeless and vulnerable. Lynn Nicholls of Art Space and the Maker’s Guild said “Last year the members made over 100 bowls and the event was sold out! The generosity of all involved is incredible, whether it’s making bowls, the soup, or organising the event. Some of The Southern Ceramics Group have also pledged to make bowls. People, including members of the council and the bakery Bread Addiction, have donated their time and money to make Empty Bowls work, and it’s been great to see the community come together.”
Lynn also ran a series of bowl making workshops over the summer where 55 bowls were made in two sessions. Paula Savage attended the event last year and was keen to make bowls in the workshop. “It was a real treat, I made five bowls for the event and it was a great introduction to an art form we don’t see enough of in the city. I’d love to do this again”.
If you would like to buy a ticket and attend the Empty Bowls evening event at St Simon’s Church on 6 December 2019 then contact Mick Walters at St Simon’s Church on 023 92829440.

F
ounded by the artist/blacksmith Lucille Scott in 2013. the Created in Portsmouth Art Trail has gone from strength to strength. “This is such a fun, free event, and a great opportunity for people to see the amazing creativity we have in the city. Some of the artists on the trail exhibit internationally, but are barely known in their home city” said Amy Routledge, who took over the organisation of the trail 2 years ago. “It’s something of a labour of love" said Amy, who works as a community art teacher and local artist, “I like the idea of bringing artists and members of the public together. Also, from an environmental and economic point of view, I think it’s important to support local artists rather than displaying anonymous, mass produced art in our homes”. But, don’t visitors feel awkward about going into artist’s homes and studios? “I really
56
hope not, the artists on the trail are all keen to share their work with visitors and they will have spent many hours preparing for the weekend. There will of course be work on sale at studio prices, but there’s absolutely no pressure to buy”. So what’s the best way to do the trail? “Easy, either pick up a leaflet from various shops, Southsea Library etc, go to our website, or scan the QR code to download the trail (see opposite). Visitors have various approaches, some like to work to a sort of tick list and visit every venue, while other people prefer to visit specific artists. You just need to check the opening times and turn up. Look out for the blue and white paper balls and bunting outside of our venues. I’m sure everyone, visitors and artists alike, are going to have a great weekend” said Amy.

T
CULTURE VULTURE October/November, by Emma Beatty
his autumn sees a flurry of new art exhibitions in and around Southsea, from detailed topographical oils in a
new display at Portsmouth City Museum, via techno-colour super-wrestlers at Jack House on the High Street. These are the shows to put in your diary for the coming months. First up, the second weekend in 11-13 October is the
7th Portsmouth Art Trail, Created in Portsmouth, where local artists open their homes to the public. Watch out for the blue and white bunting hanging outside houses and feel free to go from door to door looking at the works. It’s surprising what creativity goes on behind the quiet facades of our Southsea streets. This is a free event and a good place to buy Christmas presents: from prints and watercolours of Southsea to silver jewellery, copper sculpture or quirky recycled pieces.

In a more fiendish mood, there’s also a new group show at ArtSpace Portsmouth, Brougham Road, opening on Halloween night. Allhallowtide marks the season’s change and the three days of Halloween, All Saints and All Souls. Curated by artists Kate Street & Rhys Trussler, there are works by 14 artists exploring the occult and related rituals 31 Oct-3 Nov, 11am-4pm. Jack House Gallery, on Portsmouth High Street, has two new shows. Heroes & Villains until 30 Nov is a solo exhibition for printmaker Peter Lloyd, who is a Dean of Southampton University Art Dept. There’ll be new paintings by Lloyd on his perennial themes of the wrestler and superhero, who “have more in common than a penchant for tights”. These slightly camp portraits of fictional heroes are, in part, inspired by a family visit to the Black Panther movie. The show has Arts Council funding and there will be an audience panel discussion
Meanwhile, down in Gunwharf, Aspex Gallery stays true to its mission to foster emerging artists with its annual survey of graduate talent from art schools and colleges

Just up the road from Jack House, the City Museum has a new show in its first-floor gallery: “Portsmouth revisited”. Curator Susan Ward has searched Portsmouth’s reserve collection and secured loans from national, regional and private collections to pull off a major new display of works from 1675 to the early 1900s. All showing historic Portsmouth scenes, from Turner's grand Entrance to Portsmouth Harbour to Thomas Rowlandson's Portsmouth Point.
And finally, try to see some of this year’s Journey’s Festival 18-27 October, the annual art exhibition of work by refugees. There are scores of events to see in venues such as the Round Tower, Portsmouth Cathedral, ArtSpace, and Aspex. Look at www.journeysfestival.com for full details.

The show opening after that at Jack House has new paintings by renowned Portsmouth artist Garrick Palmer 31 Oct-30 Nov which, “thematically continue his emotional exploration of landscape”, alongside some previously unshown work from much earlier periods, including paintings, drawings, and prints.
across the South East. The Platform Graduate Award 4 Oct-22 Dec has work by 13 artists from six degree shows ranging from Winchester, Southampton, Farnham, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Chichester. A winning artist will be announced in November.

SAMARITANS COMMUNITY HUB
A
new charity shop has opened, but with a difference - several differences, in fact. Sam’s Place is the first shop for the Samaritans of Portsmouth and East Hampshire.
be a notice board listing stock that might not be on display. “It’s all about keeping everything simple and I must emphasise, every penny raised goes towards our local branch to fund training and our extensive outreach programme” said Anne. Samaritans are best known for providing emotional support - by phone, text or email to anyone 24/7, but the organisation also participates in many outreach projects throughout the community.
The shop, at 6 Grove Road South, features bespoke wrought iron shop fittings designed by Bare Metal Industries complemented by artwork by the popular street artist and designer Mark Jones aka Fark Fk. “The shop includes display units made out of recycled parquet flooring that can be easily wheeled to one side to make the space we need once the shop has closed”. Anne Yendell, Shop Manager explained, “we want to be able to use the shop in the evenings for various events and workshops, from meditation classes, to a monthly book club, and art & design workshops, therefore becoming very much part of the community. We aim to offer a social opportunity for anyone feeling isolated or lonely”. Anne has also devised a simple, colour-coded pricing system for the items on sale, plus there will 66
Brian Stevely, Branch Director added, ‘We are looking for volunteers to help with the shop, but we also desperately need support volunteers in our branch to help with tasks such as administration, finance, fundraising and property maintenance. Hours can be totally flexible to suit your availability, so if you have any of the above skills and a few spare hours please contact: portsmouthsamaritans@hotmail.co.uk or simply ask in the shop.
