O

K, I know it’s not original, but we jumped on the New Decade bandwagon to see where it would take us - but all from a local perspective.

We asked people in the street what they hoped for Southsea over the next ten years, p.40, and John Worsey interviewed Steve Pitt of Portsmouth City Council for his vision for the city, p.42. Elly Mitchell takes a light hearted look at ten restaurants ‘to help you kick start 2020 in style’, p.8.

22

I’ve got a good feeling about the next decade, even though I know we face some huge challenges, both internationally and as a city. Whenever I talk to people from all over town, they are always so positive and cheerful. We are a city that innovates and creates, read about The Festival of the Sea and a new app to tackle plastic waste, p.36. Or how retailers are seeing the closure of our department stores as an opportunity, p.32. We live in a special place, and as a community, we can be a beacon of light to the rest of the country! Doing our bit to halt climate change, helping the homeless, tackling racism, giving our youngsters the best start in life… it’s a long list, but let’s give it a go. To paraphrase Jodi Picoult, “You just have to put the past behind you, and find something better in the future”. Bring on the 2020s.

NEW YEAR, NEW FOOD! Ten mouth-watering eateries around Southsea to help you kick-start 2020 in style. By Elly Mitchell

W

hilst the majority of the population perceive the new year as the ideal opportunity to reduce their treat intake and apprehensively clamber back upon the fitness wagon they slipped from over the festive period, I would argue that it is the chance to challenge society's expectation of engaging in unrealistic resolutions, and to instead throw ourselves into trying new, wholesome experiences that give us fulfilment - after all, the gym isn’t going anywhere, and you don’t have to sacrifice pleasure in order to be healthy and happy! From tasty breakfasts to exquisite plant-based dishes, whatever your preference, you are guaranteed to find something to take a bite out of with these ten glorious Southsea foodie havens. .

FOR THE EARLY BIRD...

Because it’s the most important meal of the day!

SOUTHSEA BEACH CAFE

Southsea Beach Cafe is a delightfully unique eatery, providing locals and travellers alike with unbeatable food all year round. Famous for: The perfect formula of exciting, wholesome meals, using fresh, locallysourced ingredients, without crossing the line towards intimidating pretentiousness. Their smashed avocado on toasted sourdough is just one example of how they succeed in taking a popular morning dish, and transform it into a flavour explosion! southseabeachcafe.co.uk Eastney Esplanade, Southsea PO4 9GE

Famous for: Beautifully presented dishes, boasting gorgeous local and wild ingredients, connecting with the seasonality of food. Their brand new brunch menu is a plant-based heaven that will have even seasoned carnivores drooling.

Positioned in a splendidly prime location, directly on Southsea Common, the Parade Tea rooms offer a fantastic pit-stop for those strolling along the magnificent Western Parade. It is hard to believe that this cosy eaterie was once an abandoned substation, now cheerfully demonstrating to passers-by that the world is a much happier place with a cup of tea and a slice of something nice! Famous for: Stunning cakes of all flavours to suit all tastes, as well as traditional high tea served on fine bone china. Indulge in homemade sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, all served on a three-tier cake-stand along with tea and coffee. There is the option to swap your hot beverage for a bottle of champagne or prosecco; the best way to add some class to your cake! paradetearooms.co.uk Western Parade, Southsea PO5 3JF -

FOR THE VEGETARIAN/VEGAN...

Because a plant-based diet doesn’t have to mean just a salad.

BECKETTS Nestled in the heart of Southsea, within the walls of a majestic Grade II listed building, you will find Becketts; a multi-functional eatery

Salt and vinegar smothered over fresh-battered fish, and perfectly crispy chips; a taste of nostalgia that resides deep within British culture; The Fisherman’s Kitchen expertly captures this through their traditional, yet adventurous, menu, aiding in reminding us that a chippy tea can go further than your standard cod or haddock, with an ever-changing specials board that continues to tantalise locals taste buds. Famous for: A ‘think outside the box’ menu that breaks away from the standard offerings of a fish and chip shop whilst retaining unbeatable quality. Try something from the baps and tacos selection, adding an exciting new dynamic to traditional chip shop cuisine. 4 Clarendon Road, Southsea PO5 2EE

DEEP BLUE Greeted by a majestic open space, high ceilings adorned with chandeliers, and unrivalled views across the Solent, if it wasn’t for the open kitchen displaying careful preparation of each dish, you would be forgiven for assuming you were anywhere but a fish and chip shop.

Serving its 20th year, Montparnasse is a pillar of the local foodie community, with an everchanging menu that expertly picks the very best seasonal ingredients, transforming them into high-quality, memorable dishes. Unfortunately, this restaurant will be serving it’s last meal this spring, so ensure you get a taste of the action while you can!

WOMEN SUPPORTING WOMEN

Tamara Gillingham’s take on women’s empowerment in Southsea

WHAT IS A WOMEN’S CIRCLE? A women’s circle is a gathering of women for women. The women can be from different backgrounds, be of different ages and have different life experiences. Circles are a supportive environment where women can share highs and lows, triumphs and sorrows. Jen Sanchez is the woman behind Dimples and Daisies and Liberty. She set up a women’s circle in Southsea for women to have a safe space, where they can experiment with growing from past experiences and find their sense of identity. I experienced my first women’s circle with my eldest sister. I was invited to attend and believed she would enjoy the experience being around women who wanted to connect with each other and learn from one another. There were tears, visible heartache, and laughter. Jen wants to provide an environment where women feel able to let go of experiences they have been holding onto that inhibit them from achieving their potential. The idea is to get women to find it within themselves to turn off the broken record of negativity in their minds.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A CIRCLE? A circle is typically opened by an individual who encourages the group to connect as a collective. The circle was opened by everyone sharing hands, and Jen sent a pulse round; a pulse is when one person squeezes the hand of a person next to them and goes around the whole circle until it goes back to the beginning. The joining of hands is a physical connection, sending the pulse starts to form an emotional bond before words and feelings are shared; it 18

builds anticipation for the moments to follow. There isn’t any pressure if you choose to talk or simply listen, everyone has their opportunity to open up and to respond to someone else’s story, to offer comfort and words of reassurance. As the circle was ending each person said a time where they were put down or wronged, and a positive mantra was given for them to shout out. Hands were rejoined and a final pulse was sent around. Despite there being some tears shed, there was an energy shift as people were getting ready to leave. The atmosphere was lighter, and smiles were adorned across faces and a feeling of empowerment was in the air.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A WOMEN’S CIRCLE? A women’s circle is an opportunity to connect with people you would never come across in your own day to day life. A women’s circle is a place to let out what has been bottled up and churning inside, a place to free angst. It is a safe space to leave your ego and inhibitions at the door. It was empowering listening to each story, how one story can have a profound impact and resonate with another individual. A circle allows for insights to be made; it is a space free from judgement. In its essence a women’s circle is a bearing of souls. A powerful connection happens within a women’s circle, women are sharing the same frequency. Everyone present is being seen by each other; each soul in the room is acknowledged.

PREPARING TO SELL Neil Maxwell

20

20 has started very well for us with activity across all price ranges, and the lettings market following the same pattern. Looking deeper into this lift, the general feedback from clients has been that with the political deadlock broken, there is some certainty that gives confidence for making decisions surrounding property.

the asking price is less likely to be negotiated upon, as any prospective purchaser will have less to bargain with.

With a bumper level of requests for valuations has come a lot of queries about what is worth doing to prepare properties for sale. We always take a pragmatic approach to these questions, as ultimately if we advise clients to spend money, we need to be sure that it is going to provide a return, and the client is going to get their money back as a minimum.

Putting a £50,000 kitchen into the property just to sell it is very unlikely to have more impact on an eventual sale price than a more modestly-priced kitchen. If you’re putting an expensive kitchen into the property because you’re going to live there and enjoy it for some years, then that makes sense. If you went to a lot of expense to sell the house, then drive by two weeks later to see the kitchen you installed going into a skip, then it could be more painful than knowing you have had several years use of it yourself.

It has been my experience that these works fall into one of two categories: the ‘essential’ work that adds to the saleability, and the work that would be ‘nice’ to do. To give you an example of this, a simple redecoration and a declutter of the home would freshen it and enhance the saleability, meaning that

We can only hope that this change in the market turns into a sustained trading period, which given three years of lower national transaction levels, there is a pent up demand to be satisfied. If we can help with an appraisal for sales or lettings please do not hesitate to contact us. 02392 815221.

serving good food and wine in a convivial atmosphere. And so the Royal Naval Club Portsmouth was born. By 1868 the club had 300 members, and the Hampshire Banking Co. in Pembroke Road had been purchased as the club’s premises. Shortly afterwards the Fitzclarence Tavern was bought along with a private home, to extend and complete the building. A castellated tower was also added to take advantage of the impressive views of Governor’s Green and beyond — to Cowes and Selsey Bill. In WWII, several rooms at the club took a direct hit and a gun shop and the Green Row Rooms next door were also badly damaged.

The Royal Naval Club needs a lot of looking after and being an important Grade II listed building, it also means all the materials used must be sympathetic to the original construction. Recently, scaffolding has been erected at the front of the club, as the exterior is being restored, “We obviously take the maintenance of the building very seriously, and once it is finished it will look

Locals often tell us ‘we didn’t think we could join’, or ‘I thought I had to have a naval connection to get married there’, in fact, everyone is welcome to join the club, or to hold a special event here. THE PROBLEM WITH PLASTIC (AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT)

T

he opening event of New Theatre Royal’s Festival of the Sea 2020 sees the launch of a brand new app, Jetsam, to tackle the problem with plastic on Portsmouth’s beaches. Jetsam has been designed to empower the people of Portsmouth to make a difference. Users of the app are asked to photograph plastic litter spotted on beaches to create a heat map of our shores. This information will then be combined with information such as weather and tide to start to predict where the plastic is going to wash up. The app will be unveiled on 13 February with a panel event hosted at New Theatre Royal.

The Problem with Plastic (and what to do about it) is a powerful call to arms. Hear from worldclass expert speakers, download the app, and leave tooled up to make a difference.

SPEAKERS INCLUDE:

Festival of the Sea 2020 focuses on protecting and celebrating the seas which surround our island city. Other events in the festival include English Chamber Orchestra’s Sailing the Centuries on 22 February which features pieces from wellknown composers such as Mozart, alongside rediscovered and new artists, all as varied, passionate, and timeless as the sea itself. At the Square Tower, The Sea Show on 16 February is a quirky and hilarious show for all the family and Nelson – The Sailors’ Story is a highly amusing portrayal of Horatio Nelson told from his perspective as a statue in Trafalgar Square watching over those below. The Festival of the Sea 2020 also includes a summer programme of events including the return of the Portsmouth Seafood Festival. SOUTHSEA BEACH CLEAN By Jake Hughes

I

f you have ever noticed people scouring Southsea beach with litter pickers, it will probably be Southsea Beachwatch. For 10 years, a team of dedicated volunteers have been removing plastic and other litter, keeping our coastline in tiptop condition. For the past 2 years Jane Di Dino has led the team, and apart from the beach cleans they always complete a survey in September. Last year the volunteers collected 594kg of litter and found some interesting things along the way.

dressed pebble was given to one of the children that had volunteered. As well as tackling all weathers, Jane and the team often run into lots of interesting people. In June last year, the beach was invaded by sharks and lobsters – members of Seaside Shuffle, dressed as marine animals. On another occasion, ‘the Portsmouth Pride Parade came along the promenade — it was so colourful and with the upbeat music it made for a real carnival spirit’ said Jane. The last September survey recorded 679 pieces (weighing 10kg), over a 100m area, compared to a national average of 558. As well as taking marine litter off our beaches the data collected is used to run targeted litter campaigns across the country. And to influence policy makers by showing them the scale of the problem, and specific areas where action is needed most. On our beaches, plastic food wrappings from sweets and crisps are the most common type of litter. Cigarette butts are a close second; one of

the volunteers picked up 213 during one event. The organisers of Southsea Beachwatch recommends that people take small and easy actions to reduce their consumption of everyday single use plastic to help reduce what ends up on our coastline. As we head into 2020, we need to take our own bags to the shops and make a home-made lunch for work or school. Carry a reusable cup and portable ashtray. Buy a bar of soap, rather than shower gel and detergent in a bottle. One idea is to take our own containers to takeaways (or find a chippy that still wraps in paper). A small change from lots of individuals will have a huge global impact. If you would like to join Jane and the rest of the volunteers in February, the event has been confirmed and you can register at https://www.southseabeachwatch.co.uk/ our-events

STREET TALK

What developments or changes would you like to see in Southsea over the next decade? We asked Southsea residents for their ideas. Photos by Paul Windsor shops. We need to make Southsea an exciting location so that people come here rather than visit out of town shopping centres.

ALASTAIR GREGORY I’d like to see plenty of locally owned shops, more boutique hotels, a cinema, and community spaces. Some of which will come via the Knight & Lee development. I have heard rumours that a mini John Lewis store could be part of the Knight & Lee scheme, which sounds good. Also, about 20 years ago there was a plan to build a mono-rail system across the city, it was great idea then, but an even better idea today.

OWEN HALES My concern is the lack of affordable housing – to rent or buy. There’s lots of big houses in Southsea that are under-occupied, often by older people who may be lonely or need help. I’d like to see a house share scheme that would benefit both the owners and young people who need housing, who can also provide care and be good company.

BRIGITTE BARKER I’m concerned about the Debenhams ELIJAH I’d like more things to do, a cinema in the centre of town, also art galleries, community facilities, more independent shops, and pop-up stores to fill empty 40

building, but the Knight & Lee scheme is promising. I think in time, we will see a high street revival with more independents and market stores taking over from the

big stores. I hope that in less than ten years the homelessness problem is resolved, it’s so upsetting and it’s difficult to know what to do. Of course, affordable housing would help, and not just for young people, all generations need good inexpensive homes.

homes. The council is good at cleaning the city, but recycling is variable.

DAVE ALLEN Portsmouth lacks a centre, it’s split into several SHAGUN JUNEJE I can’t park near my home – so I don’t drive anymore, but maybe that’s a good thing! I’m looking forward to seeing the seafront development being completed as I see the city becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination.

SIMON MIDDLETON

I’m looking forward to the sea defences being finished, I think we are going to be challenged by more storms and higher seas over the next decade. I want less cars, a better bus service, more pedestrianisation and sustainable

districts, we need a vision for the whole city not just Southsea. Commercial Road is under-rated, I go there to buy new music, and books, things you can’t buy in Southsea anymore. I’m very keen on the ‘Portsmouth Creates’ project; art and creativity could transform this city. Also, the environment is so important, we need to encourage wildlife, reduce Co2 emissions and recycle. A big thumbs up to the people who clean the beaches.

ANNABEL I’d like a more cycle friendly city, the cycle lanes are good on the seafront, but elsewhere they are lacking. We need to become less car-obsessed. Also recycling provision in the city is quite basic compared to most cities in the UK. 41

WHAT DO THE 2020s HAVE IN STORE FOR PORTSMOUTH? By John Worsey

I

t’s the cold, dark and drizzly end of a long, busy January day. But at the Portsmouth City Council offices in Guildhall Square, Councillor Steve Pitt’s enthusiasm is undimmed as we talk about the city’s future. Portsmouth born-and-bred, Steve used to run the music programme at The Cellars in Eastney. Now he’s the Deputy Head of Portsmouth City Council — we talk about the Council’s ambitions for the next decade.

the Kings Theatre to cement Albert Road’s status as an attractive home for independent businesses. He agrees Portsmouth is lucky to have a street populated by indies, at a time of identikit high streets nationwide. That said, he’s also keen to note Commercial Road is doing better than many think - only two units are vacant, and changes to the street market are bringing new energy to the area.

RETAIL RENEWAL

‘We need to celebrate creativity in all its forms,’ Steve says. ‘This city is brilliant at it. But we don’t talk about it. For example — did you know Portsmouth had two artists exhibit at the Royal Academy last year; Sadie Tierney and Karl Rudziak?’

‘Some people say, “Oh no, Debenhams is closing, that’s the end of Southsea.” But the world changes. Let’s listen to people. The community will drive what happens next through demand.’ Just look at Knight & Lee. Re-opening this year, it will feature small units for independent retail businesses, a networking lounge, co-working spaces and bookable meeting rooms, cinemas, a hotel, and a roof terrace bar. The owners of Debenhams will go to community consultation over that building’s future later this year. So watch out and make your voice heard! ‘235,000 people live in Portsmouth,’ Steve says. ‘That’s a critical mass that can influence change. You don’t just have to ask the Council to fix things. Make your own ideas public.’ Steve points to the success of independent brands like Southsea Bathing Hut and Baffled Coffee as examples of how locals can make an impact. He expects the regeneration of 42

A CITY OF CULTURE

Steve was a driving force in getting Portsmouth Creates off the ground, with the City Council contributing 25% of its funding. It’s a Community Interest Company which exists to help ensure everyone gets to take part and enjoy what Portsmouth’s dynamic cultural scene has to offer. Steve says the development of Portsmouth Creates is about ‘empowering the city’s creative community to be its own agent of change.’ Whatever happens with the Council and the economy in the future, this is a way of giving our creatives a toolkit to secure their own partnerships, funding, and opportunities. Look out for its first free public event, Portsmouth’s very own major light festival - We Shine Portsmouth - in November 2020.

GOING GREENER ‘Making the city greener is our number one priority,’ Steve says. ‘The food waste trial has been massively successful, and we’ll be expanding it. The refuse lorry contract is not up til 2021, so we need to be pragmatic, but we’re committed to rolling it out across the city.’

The Council wants to run a public climate summit this year. It will also be paying

FILM

1917 UK/USA 2019 Director: Sam Mendes 118 mins Cert. 15 Russell Baldwin

W

ot? The Whole Year? Sam Mendes’ latest film actually concentrates on one 24 hour period on 6th April that year. A dangerous task is given to two Tommies, and the camera follows their progress across No Man’s Land. A journey into hell — a man-made hell, man-made for the film. It all seemed so perfect — as the Great War should be in our heads. The film’s depiction/recreation of the

burning town seemed very artistic, which undermined the grimmer, realistic approach. It all seemed a bit contrived. Contrived to achieve the best effect from the audience. Full of action and incident. The film is relentless, like a video game. Its tricky use of camera and time doesn’t help. For all its blood and guts, 1917 is a romantic and sentimental film of a snapshot of time. Over the top, Sam, OTT.

f you need an excuse to catch the Gosport Ferry (and who doesn’t?), set out for Gosport Open Art Exhibition at the Gosport Gallery 29 February-21 April. Anyone local can enter and the best works will go on display, and on sale.

Lecturer Ian Swankie talks about Perry’s transvestitism and the subversive messages in his “folksy” hand-coiled pots. Keeping things local, we’ve been asked to give a shout out to the redoubtable local group The Phoenix Players, an am-dram society who’ve been performing for the residents of Portsmouth since 1953, for the past few years at Trinity Church Theatre in Albert Road. For a late pantomime, and some local fun, why not see their Robin Hood, 19-23 February, Trinity Church Theatre. Another theatre recommendation for your diaries: the Kings Theatre is showing Willy Russell’s Educating Rita with the doleful and brilliant Stephen Tomkinson in the

They tell the mythical story of Daphne being chased by Apollo, and how she transforms into a tree to escape his clutches. The pen and ink images run at a frame rate of 10 per second, just hovering between a still and a moving image. They are surrounded by powder pink and blue plywood sculptures inspired by a fabric by British painter Duncan Grant, reinterpreted here by the artist for this beguiling and unusual show until 11 April. On a similarly spring-like pastel theme, the main area of Aspex is showing ice cream-coloured ceramic vases by Brighton University graduate Kitty Hall. These delicate items are all moulded from waste cardboard packaging (you can recognise the familiar grooves and shapes), and are for sale for surprisingly reasonable prices, around £30. museum’s enormous D-Day tapestry. For dance fans, this is a good month. At the Kings Theatre is Giovanni Pernice 24 March, and Aljaz & Janette are together in a Hollywood extravaganza 26

March. Their spritely colleague AJ Pritchard is at the Guildhall 16 March. The New Theatre Royal has its dance festival Flux, with performances from Akram Khan’s company 10-11

March, and Vincent Dance Theatre 31 March, and more continuing into April. Finally, for true culture vultures, there are two operas on the horizon. An Ellen Kent production of Madam Butterfly, Kings Theatre, 28 March, with Korean soprano Elena Dee and Ukrainian Alyona Kistenyova. While at the New Theatre Royal 22 March the Russian State Opera sings Verdi’s Aida with live orchestra in a brand-new production.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE HIGH AND LOW POINTS?

My high point is the art exhibition based on The Snow Witch that was held in Cascades in November. The whole experience was so uplifting and quite humbling. My low point: 10 years fighting writers’ block,- which isn't just not feeling like writing, as some people imagine, but a deep sense of doubt in one's own value as a writer.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT PORTSMOUTH THAT CAPTURES YOUR IMAGINATION? The city is an amazing mixture of rough, gritty, and beautiful. It's poetic, joyous, dark, dangerous, with so many people living close to each other on an island with international connections and an extraordinary history. 58

YOU OFTEN WRITE ABOUT STRANGE OCCURRENCES, HAS ANYTHING HAPPENED TO YOU WHILE WRITING? I sometimes sit in the half lotus position, listening to ethereal music while writing. I once went into a trance and cut off the blood supply to my foot. I got up to walk and crashed into furniture, sending everything flying. My father-in-law told me it served me right, but I have yet to find a moral connection between sitting and bad things happening to you.
