t may be quite small and nothing to get too excited about, but look carefully there it is... the beginnings of a What’s On guide (p.37). The What’s On guide was always something Southsea Lifestyle prided itself upon and until February 2020 and the beginning of the first lockdown, the number of events, from across the city would often run to five pages or more. We also welcome back Emma Beatty’s Culture Vulture column, tempting us with some intriguing exhibitions and looking forward to the re-named and re-branded, Ports Fest arts festival 2-4 July. And, just when you thought the only live music you’d be listening to this year would be a busker in Palmerston Road precinct, Victorious Festival comes to life - we have a description of what to expect down on the Common this August bank holiday weekend 27-29, (see p.38). Of course the temptation is to think everything has returned to ‘normal’, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves, we must still be careful and follow the guidelines to keep ourselves and our community safe, and then maybe, just maybe, by the end of the year, our What’s On guide will be filling the pages of Southsea lifestyle once more! Now as he takes up the role of Executive Chef at the Queens Hotel in Southsea, Simon will be bringing his passion for food to the new menus he has created for 1865, the new signature restaurant. “On family holidays in France when friends would be off buying toys with their pocket money, I would make a beeline for the markets to buy olives and cheese. “I’ve always been interested in local produce and with experience I have learned the importance of letting just 8

Food and Beverage Manager Jodie Chamberlain couldn’t be more excited about launching Restaurant 1865, which is named after the year the original house was extended and converted into a hotel. “We have focused on creating a relaxed fine dining experience that focuses on using the best possible local produce to make delicious food. “We want 1865 to be the restaurant you choose because it offers the best food in wonderful surroundings - and we can’t wait to welcome you to your table,” she said.

ingers crossed that as we move into June and July, we can start enjoying eating outdoors with friends because we want to, not because the government says it’s our only choice! I am sure many of us will be dusting off our BBQs and enjoying gardens to the full this year.
I want to share with you a “party piece” recipe that never fails to impress and is far easier than it looks - homemade BBQ flatbreads. For me a BBQ is not complete without them now, and they normally end up being the star of the show.
As a child, the smell of charcoal being lit brought on a warm fuzzy excitement for the onslaught of burgers, sausages and processed cheese slices. In a way, that excitement still exists today, but my taste in food has changed. Whilst burgers and sausages will always be brilliant and easy BBQ go to’s, I love finding other meals that work well on the BBQ and it turns out the options are limitless.
The recipe is so simple, it uses yogurt in place of water and yeast, and it requires no kneading or proving - what’s not to love!? To feed four people, you will need: 500g Self raising flour 500g Plain natural yogurt (full fat works best) 1 tbsp Olive oil 1 tsp Sea salt ½ tsp Bicarbonate of soda (1 tsp dried oregano and ½ tsp smoked chilli flakes optional)

Mix all of the above together in a large mixing bowl, and add a little more flour towards the end if the mixture is too wet to handle. The dough should be wet and sticky,
but with a floury coating on the outside. Leave the dough aside for 10 min or so to rest, or until you're ready to cook. When you’re ready, cut the dough into chunks, give a little extra dusting of flour, pat down into roughly 2cm thick pieces and place directly on the hot grill. Don’t be tempted to prod and turn them too soon, wait a minute or two until they are charred and come away easily. Repeat on the other side and serve. They should take just 2 - 3 minutes each side and be nicely charred and slightly puffed up. I served them here with lamb chops which I marinated in a fabulous locally made Pomegranate and Cardamom rub by Cut To The Smoke (available from The Southsea Deli). Finished with pickled red onion, fresh parsley, harissa yogurt and a shower of pomegranate seeds, it was an easy and satisfying BBQ meal, but not as you know it.

BEHIND THE SCENES
ven a global pandemic cannot halt the celebration of love!
With weddings back on the scene, it feels like the perfect time to share an insight into our coastal wedding collaboration with innovative London-based photographer, Ester Keate.
With bold colours, sustainability and celestial themed jewellery on the rise we wanted to push the boundaries of traditional wedding imagery and instead combine our coastal location with interior glamour and contrasting textures. Showing our exquisite nature-influenced, ethically handmade jewellery can be out of this world. We found the beautiful French model, Malaika, and with the talented make-up artist, Alex Reader, we managed to get together on an especially cold and windy day in March to shoot our Amora collection 12
From earthy, natural rose cut diamonds, to the celestial spheres of sparkling diamonds and ethically sourced, hand-picked gemstones, our Amora rings are inspired by the elements on earth and in the heavens.
Therefore, to really capture the enchanting quality of each ring, we chose outdoor shots, natural local backdrops and clothing that strengthened the feel of each look and style. Despite the ease of simply booking a studio, we wanted to make use of our magnificent coastal environment. Which, given the seasonal weather, meant bringing hot water bottles, blankets and lots of hot coffee! But wow, was it worth it! After freezing on the beach at the Hotwalls, we ran for The Queens Hotel pillared foyer for an exotic backdrop, and then on to Hideout Coffee for use of their secret, glamorous retro-pink basement. Joining forces with our designer friend David Western Couture the vivid colours and bespoke nature of the dresses complimented our handmade jewellery perfectly! IT’S TIMES LIKE THESE WE LEARN TO LIVE AGAIN Neil Maxwell
I
’ve stolen the title above from the Foo Fighters, but it seems very pertinent to emerging from the various lockdowns and heading towards the ‘sunlight uplands’ of a post COVID-19 world. Not quite sure how Churchill would feel being quoted in the same sentence as the Foo Fighters, but hey ho!
The enforced closure of March, April and May 2020 allowed us to pursue various projects, that are now bearing fruit for the benefit of our customers and staff. But apart from the first lockdown, Fry & Kent has been working consistently throughout the year with high demand keeping us on our toes.
Looking back on the last twelve months, personally and professionally, I’ve been really struck as to how so many of us have been stretched mentally and been forced to cast aside everything we took for granted three years ago, yet for many people I’ve spoken to reconnecting with our local community and environment has been a pleasure money couldn’t buy.
As I’m constantly visiting and valuing properties across the city, I’m amazed at the volume of junk mail emanating from estate agents being put through letterboxes of people’s homes, especially empty properties. Apart from being irritating and wasteful, I can’t imagine home-owners are going to choose to sell their most valuable asset on the strength of a few promises on the back of a flyer. It’s far better for potential sellers to ask people they know for recommendations of estate agents, investigate exactly what each agent is offering as part of their service and to be certain that the chosen agent really understands the local property market.
It has also been a time to innovate — with many of us turning our hands to long forgotten skills, be it sewing, joinery, DIY, or… taking time to really understand how New World Sauvignon compares to Chablis and Sancerre, ably helped by Dave, Karen, and Christina, at Camber Wines. To be able to walk around the shops again has been fantastic, albeit with a slight queue here and there, yet the buzz of life coming back to Palmerston Road has been palpable, coupled with the work well under way at the former Knight & Lee building — the promise of better days ahead for the precinct is very reassuring. 24
Strong local demand for both sales and rental properties, puts property owners in a good position, but in many ways getting the valuation and marketing just right is more important than ever. Hopefully, as we gradually return to a semblance of normality more property will come onto the market, ‘It’s times like these that we learn to move again’.

THE HISTORY HOUSE
When award winning interior designer Richard Dewhurst moved into Atlas House in Old Portsmouth, he was always destined to leave his mark. By Kate Thompson
“I
t is an interesting house and one of those where more features reveal themselves the longer you stay here,” Richard explained.
When Richard is working with clients his aim is to create convivial spaces that people can live in comfortably — and his own home fully reflects that aesthetic.
While careful work outside revealed an early Georgian facade with 16th century origins, the treasures inside include the original staircase with 18th century panelling.
“When we moved in, everything was painted white. White walls, white woodwork, beige carpets.
An exposed wattle and daub wall discovered in the 1980s has been expertly dated to 1545, meaning someone would have been living in this house when the Armada attacked Portsmouth, and may even have witnessed the sinking of the Mary Rose.
26
“I immediately ripped up all the carpet to reveal the original floorboards, which I had re-stained to retain the patina and leave the years of history intact. I've refurbished both bathrooms and the kitchen, and fully redecorated throughout,” he said. Working with the history of the building,
“I decided we needed to strip off the paint at the front. When we did, it revealed this amazing brickwork that has lifted the property. People kept coming up to us in the street saying, 'Wow, we didn't realise this building was here, what have you done to it?” he recalled. “There is something to be said about living by the sea.- you immediately feel you can relax. It really is a tonic!” Now Richard is moving on to pastures new, and Atlas House is on the market with Fry and Kent.
Richard has skillfully incorporated modern design that makes the most of the light, space, and location. “We’ve got three roof terraces here, including the ‘crows nest’ as we call it, where you have the most incredible skyscapes and sunsets,” he revealed. It was the transformation of the exterior that really excited local people.

BEYOND THE CHAPEL DOORS - ART SPACE PORTSMOUTH
W
alking past the former Methodist chapel in Brougham Road, you’d be forgiven for not realising that the building has been converted into studio spaces, used by a diverse range of professional artists all under the auspices of Art Space Portsmouth. 2021 is officially the 40th anniversary of Art Space, although the story began a few years before. At the time artists from the Art College were using workspaces above a betting shop in Fratton Road and a private detective agency in London Road. One of the artists, John Thomson, secured an Arts Council grant and with artists Ken Devine, Steve Chettle, and Andy Mansfield, began looking for a larger space to work. The local authority was approached and generously offered the

deconsecrated Methodist chapel in Brougham Road. The chapel came with a peppercorn rent, a long lease, a grant to repair the roof, and soon became Art Space Portsmouth. Portsmouth was perfect for the purpose of art studios, it offered cheap accommodation, easy access to London, and the city offered good coastal light. It was an exciting time and Art Space quickly became a significant part of the artistic life of the city. Art Space was initially composed of 13 studios on the ground floor, and a large 144sqm gallery space on the first floor, which became Art Space Exhibition or ASPEX as it became known. Art historian and curator Les Buckingham was appointed the first director in 1984. Under Les Buckingham, ASPEX Visual

CULTURE VULTURE IS BACK Flaming June: summer in the city. By Emma Beatty
M
anifestations of a Cube is a new geometric wall drawing by local artist Jeannie Driver. You can see it in the window of Jack House Gallery as you walk by until 19 June, an intriguing mix of the twoand three-dimensional. Bits of recycled paper, charcoalcoated wool, graphite, steel and blue paint interplay like a drawing that’s come to life and started to distance itself from the wall behind. Alongside it are some of Driver’s recent drawings partly inspired by the dazzle ships of WWII, made for her contribution to the Isle of Wight’s Quay Arts exhibition ‘Dazzle & Disrupt’.
documentary about how cancer cells work, and part evocative art, inspired by a fascination with natural systems made using scientific modelling techniques. These extraordinary images all hang on the cold-hard hook of devising therapeutic approaches to cancer. It’s the culmination of a long-term relationship, between local artists Vicky Isley and Paul Smith over almost two decades. In Search of Chemozoa, Aspex Gallery, until 18 July. Far more down-to-earth, items of stone and metal, are on show at Portsmouth City Museum, celebrating different jewellery techniques in a selling exhibition from Contemporary Jewellery Wessex Group 8-20 June. See unique designs by 13 local makers, from silversmithing to copper work, to stained glass, acrylic and enamel. Ports Fest arts festival has brought a host of cultural goings on to the city for 20 years. This year, it’s been hard to plan but it aims to bring lots of amusements to the first weekend in 2-4 July. As we went to press, things were being finalised. Check here to find the latest: www.portsfest.co.uk

BIKES TO YOU
I
’m Alastair Moreton and I am the owner of Bikes To You. I’m from The Wirral and came to study at The University of Portsmouth, I loved living by the sea so I decided to stick around. Since graduating, I began work at a local printers, which allowed me to interact with people in Southsea. I’m now really excited for my own business to be a part of this fantastic community.
Cycling & mountain biking have been my hobbies for years — you will often find me at the Queen Elizabeth Country Park flying down the trails or cycling around sunny Southsea. For me, it is all about getting outdoors, being active, and enjoying the freedom of peddling around on two wheels.
I started Bikes To You to share my passion for cycling, encourage you to get active and give you the opportunity to try out the latest eBikes on offer. They are super simple to ride and offer an effortless way to cycle regardless of your fitness level. Just hop on, pedal and let the electric motor do the work. After my first ride on an eBike, I was eagerly awaiting the next chance to hop back onto one. They really are that great! I launched the business this June. If you see me around I’m always up for a chat.
THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW: • Hire costs — £30 for 3hrs | £39 for 7hrs | £99 for Weekend | £179 for Week. • All eBikes come with a helmet, lock & pump. • You are not required to hold a UK licence to ride an eBike. • Your eBike will be set up for you and I will explain how it works before sending you on your way. • You should have no issue getting the eBike in & out of your home. Charging cables will be supplied if needed. It’s as easy as charging your phone. • Kids under 14 are not allowed to ride the eBikes but bike seats are available for little-uns weighing up to 22kg. • All eBikes are delivered. They can be dropped off at your home or the place that you want to go for a cycle, just let me know during booking. • Just ask to borrow a phone mount for the bike
After living in Southsea for 8 years, I have seen how popular cycling has become in Portsmouth. After all, cycling offers an eco-friendly, fun, and efficient way to get around town, and has personally always been my go-to method of transport.
