developed his expertise in altering the bias of the wooden bowls, however

still not perfect. Hensell was convinced that there must be a more stable material for making Lawn Bowls. Fortunately, William D Hensell met up with a certain Mr. Roberts, who worked for the Dunlop Rubber company in 1918. Together they came up with a plan to make a hard rubber bowl.

In June of that year Hensell started his own business (originally called WD Hensell) Dunlop would mould the rubber balls then engaged the services of WD Hensell to turn, bias and finish them, creating the first rubber lawn bowls……..

The rubber bowls were extremely popular and quick to take off with many leading bowlers discarding their old “woods’’ for the new “rubbers’’ resulting in wooden bowls completely ceasing and Australia becoming an exporter of rubber bowls. Dunlop soon realized the potential of the rubber bowls and made the decision to bring the turning and biasing of the bowls in house, which resulted in the termination of WD Hensell’s contract.

However, undeterred by Dunlop’s decision

HENSELITE is an Australian owned and operated business, who have been operating for well over 100 years. They are well known for their expertise in manufacturing Lawn Bowls, footwear and sporting accessories.

WD Hensell and his son Raymond, set about improving the lawn bowl yet again. Even though the rubber bowls were a vast improvement on timber, they were still subject to change with variations in temperature. By 1930, the Hensell’s discovered that a compound called “Phenol formaldehyde’’ AKA “bakelite’’ met their requirements. Finally after experimentation and research the father and son team perfected the moulding of the Lawn Bowl. As a result, the HENSELITE name was born in 1930 – a combination of its founders “Hensell’’ and the material “Bakelite.’’ Today, Henselite Lawn Bowls have been used by seven of the last nine Australian Open Men’s Singles Champions included Super Bowler Aaron Wilson.

However, up until the early 20th century, most Lawn Bowls were made in the UK and came to Australia by ship. Originally all Lawn Bowls were made of wood, despite the fact that timber was an unstable material and would change shape with variations in temperature, causing changes in the bias.

Bias refers to the shape of the bowl and its corresponding trajectory when rolled. One side of bowl will be slightly heavier than the other, leading the bowl to curve in that direction. William D Hensell, worked in Melbourne for billiard makers Alcock, Thomson & Taylor. The company had the responsibility of altering the bias of the misshapen bowls that came from the UK.

It became William D Hensell’s role to re-model these bowls before distribution, which is how William D Hensell subsequently

HENSELITE WELCOMES

Gary Willis Henselite, the World's leading lawn bowls manufacturer, recently announced that former Australian representative and Australia's current National Coach, Gary Willis, has joined Team Henselite as an Ambassador. Named as Australian Coach earlier this year, Gary Willis has dedicated his career to the sport he loves, reaching the highest level as both a player and a coach over several decades. “I am very honoured to be named as a Henselite Ambassador, a company and brand that is so well known and so highly regarded throughout the lawn bowling world”, said Gary. “My first game of bowls as a 12 year old was with a set of Henselite Super Grips and my very first game representing Australia was with Henselite ABT-2000s”. Gary first represented the national team in 2000 and competed in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Following his international playing career, he progressed to coaching where he took the helm of NSW women’s state team, men’s state time and guided the Sydney Lions to their first victory in the BPL. He has coached in various roles at the National Level since 2012 including Assistant coach – a role currently occupied by Henselite team-mate, Karen Murphy – and became well recognised as one of the best tacticians and mentors in the country, being twice awarded National Coach of the Year in 2018 and 2020.

“I am extremely proud to be able

to represent Henselite once again. Australian Owned and Made is extremely important to me and I am very excited to be associated and working with Ian, Thomas and the Henselite Team

Henselite Managing Director, Ian Paterson, welcomed Gary on board saying “Gary has been a great ambassador and advocate for the sport of bowls over his time as a player and a coach.” “We have shared values and vision and we all want to see the sport progress. We are looking forward to working with Gary and promoting everything that the sport of bowls and Henselite have to offer.”

Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist, Aaron Wilson, extended the welcome to Gary saying 'It's wonderful to see Gary Willis come across to Henselite. A great genuine bloke with so much experience in the game. He is an outstanding coach and mentor with playing skills to match. He'll be a great addition to the Henselite fraternity."

Why leave a gift in your Will? Leaving a legacy is a considered and thoughtful gift. Some look at it as a reflection of who they were or who they would like to be remembered as. It’s a way of still being part of making the world a better place for all who share it. And there’s a way to make this legacy as powerful as possible, while still making sure your loved ones are taken care of. All it takes is 1% of your Estate left to a charity. That means 99% of your Estate will be passed down to the people you love, while 1% can go to a cause you love.

Dear Readers Leaving a gift in Will is one of the most powerful things any person can do to support the causes they care about. That’s why I have spent the past seven years in the sector, talking to people across Australia to find out what their passion is and see if I can help them make it part of their legacy. Most people I talk to don’t know how much of an incredible difference just 1% of their Estate can make. That’s why I’m reaching out to you today. Kind regards,

Joanne Meredith Gifts in Wills Manager Australia and New Zealand World Animal Protection

The Amazing Grace Pavone Grace Pavone is an animal lover who wanted to give a voice to those who do not have one. Grace made the kind-hearted and thoughtful decision to include a number of animal charities in her Will, as she is a strong believer in helping as many animals around the world as possible. She also wanted to make sure the charities she supports in life can continue to do the important work she is so passionate about. In many ways, Grace is your everyday Aussie doing what she can to help those less fortunate than her. But she’s also part of a small, yet growing, community of people who know the incredible difference their legacy can make. Here is her story in her own words. “My decision in 2013 to bequest World Animal Protection was an easy one. One I am proud and honoured to have made. World Animal Protection work tirelessly to defend and protect voiceless animals of all species, all sizes and every issue worldwide.

I’m confident, that through my gift, this work will continue to expand and that my one voice will be one of millions to make one big voice for all animals in need of attention and action by World Animal Protection.

This work is carried out by teams of amazing and dedicated people (both on the field and behind the scenes) who see the horrors but have also achieved significant changes over the years for animals, including the importance of educating and raising public awareness. I am in awe of them.

Maybe the COVID-19 global pandemic highlighted that those animals have a rightful and respectful place on our planet that we all share. I hope this has inspired others to re-evaluate and consider a gift in their Will to make a better world for all animals.”

Which Equity Release solution is right for you? With rising living costs and an increasing desire amongst baby boomers to take financial control of their retirement, there is a growing interest in Equity Release products to help fund financial goals. Fortunately, there are several ways you can access the wealth accumulated in your home when you need it. The available options generally fall in to two categories – debt-based and debt-free strategies.

A debt-based option is a loan product, where you borrow against the equity in your home. Repayments are not required, and instead the interest charged by the provider will be capitalised against the loan over time, adding interest to the loan amount you have borrowed. Such loans are not required to be repaid until you sell your home, or you pass away. Debt-based solutions come in different forms – you may borrow the funds via a reverse mortgage product offered by private providers or take up the loan scheme offered by the Government (previously referred to as the Pension Loan Scheme). The amounts available via a reverse mortgage and the Government loan scheme may be less than via a debt-free strategy and the interest rate charged will be higher than traditional home loan rates, given the nature of the debt.

A debt-free option is not a loan, and as you don’t borrow money, there is no capitalising interest costs over time. Repayments don’t 10

apply, and instead the entitlement of the provider is capped so you can protect a portion of the equity in your home into the future. You can also sell your home at any time, or the provider will receive their entitlement when you pass away, and your home is sold. Whichever option you may be considering, it is a big decision with lasting ramifications, and it is important that you make the right decision for your circumstances.

Homesafe Wealth Release® is the popular debt free equity release solution for homeowners to access the wealth in their homes. Homesafe is not a reverse mortgage or a loan product and is specifically designed to provide protections for homeowners for the life of the arrangement. For over 16 years, Homesafe (in partnership with Bendigo & Adelaide Bank) has provided a tried and tested solution which has assisted thousands of homeowners by focusing on providing a safe and secure equity release option.

As the popular alternative, the Homesafe option is a part sale property contract, where a homeowner receives a lump sum cash amount today and in return agrees to sell a capped share of the future sale proceeds of the home. Homesafe will only receive its share of the sale proceeds, usually many years down the track, when the homeowner chooses to sell or after they pass away. A special and unique feature of the Homesafe Contract ensures if the homeowner sells earlier than anticipated, due to a unique feature, Homesafe will often receive less than the agreed capped share and the balance is returned to the Homeowner at time of sale.

As an example, John and Jasmine^ from Greensborough in Victoria, approached Homesafe in 2010 as they were keen to pay out the remaining balance of their home loan and to buy a new car. Both John and Jasmine were at the end of their working lives and keen to retire completely, but their home loan was holding them back.

“We were so pleased to find Homesafe 11 years ago. We had worked hard our entire lives and our home was our most valuable asset. We had raised our family in the same home, and it held special memories for us. With Homesafe, we could pay off the mortgage and become debt-free for the first time in our lives. The bonus was the purchase of a new 4WD, which made our retirement so much more interesting!”

John and Jasmine approached Homesafe to access approximately $150,000, and in return sold Homesafe 40% of the future sale proceeds of their home. The amount they received was less than 40% of the value of their home in 2010, as the difference was the unique early sale rebate feature, which remained available to them if they sold their home earlier than Homesafe anticipated.

“We really liked the capped share approach. From the day we received the funds, we knew that we would keep at least 60% of the sale price of our home when we eventually moved on, and that we could also receive some of the share sold to Homesafe if we needed to sell earlier. This peace of mind was priceless when making our decision”. In late 2021, due to health reasons, John and Jasmine decided to sell their beautiful home. As the Contract had not been in place for as long as initially anticipated, when they sold the home, they received approximately 70% of the sale price of their home – being the share they retained, plus some of the Homesafe share due to the early sale rebate. “The decision to sell our home last year was the biggest decision we have needed to make in many years. When everything was finalised and we knew how much we would receive at settlement, it reinforced to us, we made the right decision to go with Homesafe”.

Little Mahalia has known the four walls of a hospital for her entire life. She spent the first five years of her life in severe pain due to a rare genetic condition. Her severe and complex condition causes problems with her organs, and Mahalia relies on a tube to eat. She also lives with a developmental delay and anxiety, requiring regular appointments and therapy from specialists at the Queensland Children’s Hospital. Mahalia has sadly been prevented from having a ‘normal’ childhood, and her mum, Kristie, worries what the future will hold. “When I started researching the condition, I was so unsure what her life would be like. Some kids with her condition don’t walk, talk or live independently. That’s hard to read as a mum,” Kristie said. To manage her condition, Mahalia has an extensive and diverse team of dedicated specialists, including Dr Anita Cohn, a paediatrician at Queensland Children’s Hospital. She works with Mahalia’s family to help her get the very best out of life and is determined to give her a healthy childhood and steady future. “I want her to enjoy those normal childhood things she’s missed out on because of the nature of her condition,” Dr Cohn said.

During her time in hospital, Mahalia and her family were supported by Children’s Hospital Foundation, who believe that all children deserve the greatest possible care.

Children’s Hospital Foundation services help to make being in hospital as destress-free as possible, with Kristie describing the services as a ‘god-send’. Helping just one sick child’s life is worth doing everything possible. Imagine the opportunity to help thousands of children’s lives for many years to come. A gift in your Will helps work wonders for kids like Mahalia, now and long into the future.

HISTORY MADE AS BPL14 TEAMS ARE ANNOUNCED

BY VAL FEBBO Three new franchises, a plethora of squad changes and a historic selection highlight the lead into the Bowls Premier League’s 14th edition on the Murray in February. Among the changes is the return of five-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist and seven-time World Champion, Alex Marshall, who is one of five players to claim multiple MVP honours at the BPL. Marshall will re-join the Brisbane Pirates, who have made a trio of changes to its squad from BPL13 in April. New Zealand Blackjack, English Commonwealth and World Champion Ellen Falkner makes a maiden appearance in the competition in addition to Pine Rivers’ seven-time club champion, Chris Rosanes. The Perth Suns will make history in Moama as the first team in BPL history to enter a tournament with

two women in its squad, as WA stars Cody Packer and Kristina Krsticmake their long awaited return to the tournament to join Dawn Hayman, who retains her place in the team following her impressive efforts in Brisbane earlier this year.

With the Gold Coast Hawks’ return to the BPL, fourtime champion and three-time tournament MVP Aron Sherriff will make the switch from the Sydney Lions to accompany former Jackaroo Nathan Rice and Kelsey Cottrell, who jumps across from the Pirates.

With Sherriff departing the Lions, the Sydney franchise welcomes Aaron Wilson to join Karen Murphy and Ben Twist. BPL13 runners-up Moama Steamers have also made a solitary change, with Kevin Anderson moving from the coaching seat to the green to team up with two-time MVP Ryan Bester and Jackaroo Natasha Van Eldik. The home side will look to join the Tweed Heads Ospreys and Lions with three championships.

Reigning back-to-back champions, the Ospreys, will retain the trio of Aaron Teys, Corey Wedlock and Chloe Stewart, as will the Adelaide Pioneers with Katelyn Inch, Wayne Ruediger and two-time MVP Scott Thulborn.

The Melbourne Pulse will also head to the Murray with the same lineup of Barrie Lester, Gary Kelly and Ellen Ryan, while new franchise Melbourne eXtreme will field Carla Krizanic, Matthew Flapper and Ali Forsyth. Finally, the eXtreme’s fellow debutants, the Tasmania Tridents, have confirmed Rebecca Van Asch, Taelyn Male and Mark Nitz as its squad for BPL14.

#BPL14 will run from February 21-25, 2022 and will be broadcast on Fox Sports, Kayo and Sky Sports NZ. 16

BOWLS AUSTRALIA NOMINATED FOR SPORTS AUSTRALIA MEDIA AWARD BY VAL FEBBO

With over 300 entries across all categories for the delegating committee to cast its eyes over, BA’s continuous work promoting the inclusivity and diversity of the sport proved a strong candidate for the award through channels such as The Bowls Show, ‘The Right Line’ podcast and the organisation’s website.

“The depiction of inclusivity across our channels is something that we value dearly, as bowls is one of the most inclusive sports across the globe.

Bowls Australia (BA) has been nominated for the accolade of Best Depiction of an Inclusive Sport as part of the 2021 Sport Australia Media Awards.

BA has been nominated alongside four other entrants, including award winning filmmaker Peter Dickson for his documentary ‘The Ripple Effect’, exploring the ongoing mental health effects of racism. 2020 winner Amanda Shalala has been nominated again, as have journalists Megan Maurice and Mary Konstantopoulous.

BA CEO Neil Dalrymple is elated with the recognition by Sports Australia, and aims to continue showcasing the inclusivity that bowls

“I am delighted that we have been recognised for the 2021 Sport Australia Media Awards, as they are a prestigious accolade for any recipient.” Dalrymple said.

“It can be played by all ages, abilities and cultures with tools that can aid any bowler to participate on the green and inclusivity is a value that we are extremely proud of.” BA Communications and Marketing Manager Aidan Davis said the organisation was humbled to be in contention for the coveted honour amongst esteemed company.

“Being recognised by Sport Australia for this prestigious award is testament to the many incredible people involved within the sport of bowls from all walks of life and across the breadth of the country, with deeply rich stories and lived-experiences that are crying out to be told to help inspire the next generation of Australians to pick up a bowl, jack and mat and fall in-love with a game that is intrinsically and iconically Australian. “Simply being selected, particularly among such an esteemed company of influential journalists and media outlets, highlights the inclusive nature of bowls, as a sport that can be enjoyed equally by men and and women, young and old, able-bodied and disabled, regardless of ethnicity, and showcases the work being done to tell those stories, and will no doubt help Bowls Australia continue to shine a light on important people and initiatives, regardless of the ultimate outcome in March.”

PARALYMPIC CHAMPION AND TRAILBLAZER FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES DYLAN ALCOTT IS THE 2022 AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR. Alcott was honoured for his powerful disability advocacy and unmatched legacy in sport, when he was bestowed the national honour by Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison. His appointment follows an outstanding 2021 for Alcott, who was named Victorian of the Year in November 2021. Alcott has indicated that his appointment has now elevated the issue of disability funding, (a subject he is passionate about) and has hinted he may have aspirations of entering politics. The wheelchair tennis star, said he was determined to continue to advocate for people living with disabilities. “I’m very purpose-driven. My purpose is to change perceptions so people with disability can live, not just in sport, but in employment, in education, in film, on TV, in dating, going to bars and festivals.’’ Since winning the 2022 Australian of the Year honour, Dylan has called for free daily rapid antigen tests for disabled people, as he vows to spend this year in the role fighting for the nation’s 4.4 million people with disabilities…………………….. Dylan’s determination has resulted in establishing himself as one of Australia’s best and most admired personalities. He has been a tireless advocate for people with disabilities, using his profile to highlight their potential and give them the visibility that he says was missing from mainstream media. However, he claims his true passion is his work as a motivational speaker, and is continually trying to alter and change the way people with disabilities are perceived in the wider community. Dylan’s charity, the Dylan Alcott Foundation, provides funding and mentoring to disabled Australians. STORY COURTESY OF CATHERINE COLUSSO

WILL IDRIS ELBA’S IMPECCABLE CREDENTIALS BE ENOUGH TO MAKE HIM THE NEXT 007? Idris Elba is an English actor, producer and musician. He is one of the top 20 highest-grossing actors of all time. His films have grossed over $9.8 billion at the global box office, including over $3.6 billion in North America. He has been nominated four times for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and has been nominated five times for a Primetime Emmy Award. In 2013 Idris was named Essence’s annual Sexiest Man of the Year, then in 2014 he was presented with a MOBO inspiration Award. (The MOBO Award is an award which recognises the achievements of artists whose music is identifiable as belonging to

genre-rich music of black origin) He was then appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2016 for services to drama.

In 2018 he was named by People Magazine as the Sexiest Man Alive. Followed by the 2020/2021 editions of Powerlist, where Idris was listed in the Top 100 of the most influential people in the UK of African/African-Caribbean descent. Idris first became involved in acting while still in school. He credits “The Stage’’ with giving him his first big break. reviews and recruitment advertising directed at those who work in theatre and the performing arts) After leaving school in 1988 he won a place in the National Youth Music Theatre after receiving a Prince’s Trust grant. However, to support himself in between acting roles he worked in nightclubs under the DJ nickname of “Big Dris’’ and began auditioning for television roles.

Idris went on to achieve enormous success as an actor and singer and is known for roles including “Stringer Bell” “The Wire’’ the biographical film “Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom’’ and “Thor, The Dark World.’’ In 2021 Elba announced he would be releasing a collaborative EP with Australian rock duo “Lime Cordiale’’ titled Cordi Elba. That same year Elba also collaborated with music Legend Paul McCartney on a remix of the McCartney song “Long Tailed Winter Bird.’’

For over a decade Idris Elba fans have been clamouring for the actor to get a “Licence to Kill’’ and become the new James Bond. It seems that speculation is now in overdrive after Daniel Craig bowed out after a fifth and final instalment as James Bond. Fans of Idris are convinced that the multi-award winner is the perfect choice for the role. However, James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli was recently quoted in a podcast as saying “I think we have decided that until “NO TIME TO DIE’’ has kind of had its run. We are not going to think or talk about actors to play the role or storylines. We just want to live in the moment. The Present.’’ STORY COURTESY OF CATHERINE COLUSSO

NECK AND BACK PAIN 26

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

Neck and back pain can range from mild, annoying aches to severe, disabling pain While most spine pain occurs as a part of the normal degenerative ageing process-it can

also be a warning sign of cancer, infection,

autoimmune disease, or a structural problem causing pressure on the spinal cord/ nerves WHY DOES THIS OCCUR? Our spines are comprised of a number of joints around the spinal cord and nerves. As we age,

changes occur as the joints wear out resulting in inflammatory processes such as osteoarthritis. The joints and tissues can also become

overgrown and compress a neural structure, which is called spinal stenosis.

Failure of the joints to hold the bones in

position can result in slippage and deformity.

These are common characteristics of conditions such as spondylolisthesis, kyphosis, or scoliosis. WHAT SYMPTOMS CAN THESE

DEGENERATIVE CHANGES CAUSE?

• Dull, burning, or sharp pain-which can be confined to a single spot or cover a large area.

• Arm/leg numbness or tingling • Sharp, shooting pain that radiates from your neck and your arm.

• Sharp shooting pain that radiates from your lower back to your

buttocks, and down your leg (sciatica) • Stiffness in your neck or back • Difficulties with walking and balance • Difficulties with coordination • Loss of bladder and bowel control, with weakness in both legs are

important symptoms that require immediate medical attention. HOW IS A DIAGNOSIS MADE?

You should see your general practitioner for a medical and physical exam. They may obtain

a CT scan and /or an MRI scan to assess your spine. CT/MRI produces pictures of bones, joints, ligament, the spinal cord and spinal

nerves. Sometimes other tests are needed such as bone scans and specialised x-rays.

HOW ARE BACK AND NECK PAIN TREATED? If you experience back or neck pain it may simply improve with some rest. Over the counter medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, may also help alleviate discomfort. Activity should be modified to avoid movement that exacerbates pain. Physiotherapy, acupuncture, and massage therapy are beneficial. Low-impact exercise programs may improve range of motion, increase muscle strength, and improve flexibility and mobility, increase endurance, and improve pain. Weight loss and improving one’s core strength are also useful.

away overgrown bone, ligament and joint tissue to decompress the spinal cord and spinal nerve. Some operations (for example those that help control the conditions spinal stenosis or sciatica) employ a decompression technique and at times may also require a fusion. The latter involves a surgeon placing titanium screws and rods to stabilise the spine and cause adjacent vertebrae to fuse. There are minimally invasive ways to perform this type of surgery, and can even encompass advanced technology such as GPS-like tracking systems and robotics. If performed for the right indications, surgery can be effective in 80-90% of patients.

WHEN CAN A SURGEON HELP? A surgeon can advise on further treatment if the above suggestions haven’t improved the pain and your quality of life. Your surgeon can assess your imaging and recommend cortisone steroid injections that can alleviate some forms of neck, back, arm or leg pain. An appropriate surgical operation can also significantly improve pain, mobility and quality of life.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SURGERY Most patients are mobilised either on the same or following day of surgery, as early movement has been shown to be be beneficial. You may be reviewed by a physiotherapist to provide advice on stretches, exercises and activities. Sometimes health professionals will design a rehabilitation program to meet your needs. The type of program will depend on the procedure you underwent and your level of mobility. The goal of back and neck rehabilitation is to help you return to your highest level of fitness and independence and improve your overall quality of life. Courtesy Dr Raj Reddy, MBBS, MS, FRACS

WHAT DOES AN OPERATION INVOLVE? Because symptoms, imaging findings and causative factors can vary significantly, a surgical procedure must be tailored for you. A traditional spine surgery procedure involves an incision along the backbone. The surgeon moves muscle and soft tissue aside to gain access to the bones of the spine and the spinal cord. Minimally invasive techniques involve a smaller incision and special microsurgical instruments, through which the surgeon operates on the spine. Minimally invasive techniques may be able to shorten recovery time and reduce the risk of complications. These approaches allow the surgeon to trim

DR. RAJ REDDY MBBS. MS. FRACS.

BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE recently had the enormous privilege of chatting with Doctor Raj Reddy about the things that are important to him: his family, his extraordinary career and the impact that COVID has had on society. Dr Raj Reddy is a dedicated neurosurgeon who strives to achieve the best possible outcome for his patients. His commitment to them is paramount; his ultimate goal is “to help patients return to their highest level of fitness and independence, and improve their overall quality of life’’. He is currently the Head of Department of Neurosurgery at the Prince of Wales Public. He also holds appointments at Prince of Wales Private, St Vincent’s Private, and The Sydney Children’s Hospital. Doctor Reddy’s special interests include complex and minimally invasive spine surgery, paediatric neurosurgery and brain tumour surgery. He manages all neurosurgical conditions, both cranial and spinal. The focus of his cranial surgery is in the management of intracranial tumours, trauma and craniofacial operations in both adults and paediatric patients. Raj graduated from Sydney University in 1999. He commenced his internship at Westmead Hospital and spent the following years working in general surgery, before commencing his neurosurgical training. He completed this in 2009, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

Q&A WITH DR. RAJ REDDY

B&L: Congratulations Raj on your extraordinary career. Why did you become a neurosurgeon, and are other family members in the medical profession? RAJ: Yes, my father is a GP in the Liverpool area so a career in medicine became an appealing choice for me. However, I think my parents were disappointed that I became a neurosurgeon! They wanted me to be a physician, since the life of a surgeon can be demanding. B&L: What led you to follow the brain and spine path? RAJ: The brain defines us, and I find operating on the brain technically and intellectually challenging. Challenges motivate me, and bring out the best of my abilities. B&L: What was your second option if you were not successful in this field? RAJ: I am good with my hands, so I could have become a chef, mechanic or a carpenter. B&L: How does your family feel about your success as a surgeon and the dedication to your work? RAJ: Being a surgeon is challenging, there is no room for complacency and mistakes. My parents and my partner are very proud of the work I do for the community. 30

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

B&L: Any plans for marriage and children? RAJ: The short answer is yes. Unfortunately our plans have been temporarily put on hold due to COVID. B&L: What motivates you to continue doing what you are doing? RAJ: I want to make use of my skills and do as much good for the community as I can. B&L: Can you tell me about your association with the other doctors in BrainSpine and how that came about? RAJ: I am an only child; I’ve always seen the bond and strength siblings have. Hence, developing a group of doctors with a similar mindset has many positives. We brainstorm difficult cases, and manage each other’s patients when one of us is away. B&L: What is the most common ailment you observe in your patients? RAJ: I work in both the public and private sectors; therefore, I deal with everything that occurs in the public sector, mainly trauma and cancer, and mainly degeneration issues in the private sector. B&L: Who do you admire in the medical field and why? Did you have a mentor? RAJ: Yes, Doctor James Drake from Toronto because he is neurosurgical royalty, vastly skilled, and experienced – yet is grounded and acknowledges his limitations. B&L: What is your advice for a healthy mind and body? RAJ: Balance, moderation, and remaining active. B&L: What are your thoughts on the COVID crisis and how should we be dealing with it? RAJ: Unfortunately, the situation is very difficult for the public to understand, because of the changing data. The data does not change because it's wrong, it changes because we are continuously learning more about this disease. Also, the authorities' messaging is not as clear and straightforward as it could be. B&L: People seem hesitant about receiving the jab because of side effects (blood clotting) from AstraZeneca. RAJ: All vaccines can have side effects; however, the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the rare risk of side effects. It's better than getting COVID.

SURECELL AUSTRALIA Australia's leading provider of PRP and Stem Cell therapy

Healing | Muscles - Injuries - Joints

Are you tired of experiencing unrelenting pain every day, caused by degeneration, muscle tears or other injuries? PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) could be the answer for you! Thanks to modern medicine. We are in the midst of being engulfed globally by an ageing population. Life expectancy has now reached well into our 80’s and 90’s and could potentially reach 100 within the next 20 to 30 years. As a result, we are also encountering degeneration and other ailments. As we mature and age, our body’s ability to repair itself diminishes significantly. Injuries may take longer to heal and osteoarthritis may become more pronounced. PRP is an ‘autologous blood derivative’ meaning that the growth factors and platelets found in the plasma component of our own blood are extracted and utilized to promote cell multiplication and the formation of new tissues, alleviating pain significantly. However, for more advanced arthritis and injury, Adipose-Derived Cell Therapy may be more suitable. The use of Mesenchymal Cells is minimally invasive and a safe procedure. What this means is that after the cells are harvested from our own abdominal fat, they are mixed with PRP, and injected into the affected area, where they are able to promote growth and regeneration by releasing growth factors. This stimulates cell multiplication and promotes the formation of new tissue, which then alleviates pain. This innovative procedure can be performed by one of our expert doctors at one of our Surecell Clinics located in most capital cities in Australia. We are now living in a changing modern society, which means that we could be working well into our seventies, making it necessary to look and feel great all the time. Gone are the days when anyone

over fifty was made to feel irrelevant and redundant. With the introduction of modern techniques and medicine, eighty has now become the new thirty. Therefore it is essential to look after our bodies inside and out. Experiencing the feeling of empowerment, knowing that you have pain management under control is truly an amazing feeling. Surecell is a positive way to make looking after our bodies more achievable, and not allow pain to slow us down. Who could ignore Hollywood Legend Jane Fonda aged eighty, strutting her stuff on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards recently? She had everyone mesmerised by her dazzling appearance and attitude, and did not allow age to slow her down.

Construction is well underway on exciting new upgrades to Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge’s community facilities on the back of a record surge in enquiry from over-50s looking for the security and support that lifestyle resorts like this one offers.

Among the resort upgrades currently under construction are improvements to the community hall which will see the installation of a plush 60-seat movie cinema, an exclusive Milon gymnasium system, a heated indoor swimming pool, spa and other new activity rooms. Palm Lake Group managing director Scott Elliott said, when complete, the value of the improvements would be in the vicinity of $5-6 million. “With 44 years of history in developing and operating over-50s communities, it’s important to our family company to continue to spend money on updating our resorts’ community facilities,” Mr Elliott explained. “In a nutshell, these upgrades reflect directly on re-sale prices for our homeowners. Our residents also take great pride in their communities and we want to encourage that and make them feel proud to host their visiting friends and family members in their respective resort grounds.” Mr Elliott said Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge was his family’s first foray into over-50s community lifestyle resorts, purchased back in 1977. Since that time, Palm Lake Group now offers 28 locations across three states of Australia, including three greenfield sites that are currently in various stages of development approval. There are also six aged caring communities in the company portfolio. “Community facilities have always been key to Palm Lake Resort’s market offering,” Mr Elliott said. 32

White was one of the first women to work both in front of and behind the camera. She was also the first woman to produce a sitcom (Life with Elizabeth) in the United States. White initially started her extraordinary career in radio, however she quickly became a household name when she joined the American TV sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1973.’’ In 1985 White was cast as the iconic “Rose Nylund’’ in the hugely successful hit sitcom “The Golden Girls.’’ The sitcom ran from 1985 to 1992 with a total of 180 episodes spanning seven seasons. Professor Ken Butcher, Medical Director of the NSW Telestroke Service and Director of Clinical Neuroscience, Prince of Wales Hospital, said over 1,000 patients have now been treated.

Telestroke – an initiative of Prince of Wales Hospital that connects rural and remote communities with citybased specialists to virtually assess and treat stroke patients. Well done to Professor Ken Butcher and team, this innovative service has made an enormous difference to lives of people affected by strokes. A state-wide service that links city-based specialists to rural and remote health facilities to virtually assess and treat stroke patients was launched in March 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic struck in Australia. Prince of Wales Hospital hosts the NSW Telestroke Service. This service supports Hospitals in regional and remote NSW to care for people who have symptoms of stroke. This is a virtual, telehealth service, meaning our Doctors

always going to be a critical issue." Recently, to adhere to COVID-19 enforced social distancing, despite being only a few floors away, Prof. Butcher used Telestroke to treat a stroke patient in the Emergency Department at Prince of Wales Hospital.

Prince of Wales Hospital leads the way with Telestroke – hailed as ‘a model for COVID-19 care and beyond’

Telestroke uses screen-sharing technology provided by eHealth NSW to enable remote specialists to gain full access to patient imaging as it is processed – allowing timecritical diagnosis and immediate treatment of stroke patients. “Despite the outbreak of COVID19, the Telestroke service has continued to spread this life-saving model of hyper-acute care to hospitals such as Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour," Prof. Butcher said.

More than 1,000 rural and regional patients have been aided by worldclass rapid stroke assessment, treatment, and management via the NSW Telestroke Service? This 24 hours a day, 7 days a week service is vital in saving lives and improved outcomes at hospitals, especially to rural patients who suffer a stroke.

Digital health technology is used to treat a patient in the emergency department of POWH, home to the state-wide Telestroke Service “Telestroke is a model for COVID19 care and beyond, as it’s all about bringing better outcomes for stroke patients. The outbreak of COVID19 got us thinking that this type of technology would be invaluable should NSW Health’s medical workforce be severely affected by coronavirus. “If, for example, stroke specialists had to self-isolate but were well enough to work, they could still deliver care to patients of stroke, which – COVID or no COVID – is

“The patient had transient symptoms following two previous strokes, so we assessed their vital signs and conducted a neurological examination via Skype for Business – I was able to view the patient’s scans, which were clean. It was a good outcome for the patient, and they are now back living independently," Prof. Butcher said.

Professor Ken Butcher's Telestroke pilot has reached more than 1,000 rural and regional patients with world-class rapid stroke assessment, treatment, and management in its first year. This life-saving service connects stroke specialists with local emergency physicians to determine the best possible treatment plan for patients from Lismore in the north to Shoalhaven in the south and into the Western NSW regional areas. There are plans to establish Telestroke in more hospitals in regional NSW.

PRINCE OF WALES HOSPITAL FOUNDATION Graham and Dr. David Murphy share a special bond. Some years ago, Graham’s heart stopped for a total of two hours, and David was part of the emergency team at the Prince of Wales Hospital Emergency Department performing his cardiac compressions.

David is the Acting Director of Emergency Medicine at the Prince of Wales Hospital and Bowling & Lifestyle Magazine recently caught up with him.

Q & A WITH DR. DAVID MURPHY B&L : We love the inspirational story about how you saved Graham’s life by performing cardiac compressions on him when he was admitted to the Emergency Department of Prince of Wales Hospital. How do you feel about that? 38

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

DR. DAVID MURPHY : It’s always wonderful when a person in cardiac arrest does well. We call it the ‘chain of survival’ where early CPR, defibrillation and hospital care saves lives. We see 60,000 people a year in the Emergency Department, and it’s very rewarding to know we can make a difference. B&L : What is your association with the Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation and how does it help your patients. DR. DAVID MURPHY : The ED has had a lot of support from the foundation over many years. I think that committing to leaving a gift in your Will to the Foundation is a good thing to do for your children and grandchildren, and of course it provides funding for lifesaving research. B&L : What were you aspiring to become when you were a youngster and when was the idea of becoming a doctor conceived? DR. DAVID MURPHY : Both my parents were doctors, so the idea of entering a health profession was very familiar to me at a very young age. B&L : What was your second option, if you were not successful in this field, and how does your family feel about your success and dedication to medicine? DR. DAVID MURPHY : When I was younger I would probably have considered becoming a teacher, however now, because I love coffee I think my back-up career would be as a barista. B&L :What is your advice for a healthy mind and heart? DR. DAVID MURPHY : Staying connected with people is important for a healthy mind and a good diet and regular exercise is paramount for a healthy heart. Plus, an apple a day……………………. B&L : What is next on the agenda for Dr. David Murphy? DR. DAVID MURPHY : The Emergency Department is moving to a new building, so we are working to provide better care for all our patients. If you would like to have a confidential conversation on how you can leave a gift in your Will to help support the amazing Emergency Department Team and help fund life-saving research please contact our Gifts in Wills Manager, Grant, on 0418 405 561 or grant@ powhf.org.au.

Professional earwax removal At Earworx we work with Australian’s every day to relieve them of ear wax build up and the associated discomfort, hearing loss and pain this can cause. We take great pride in our exceptional service and our caring and compassionate approach to ear health. Ear wax removal is a delicate process and special training is required to perform this procedure. Earworx is a service that proudly employs only registered nurses who are qualified in the process of Micro Suction and Aural Hygiene Many of us know the disorienting feeling of not being quite right when one of our senses is not working correctly. Whether it’s a sinus infection or head cold impacting your sense of smell or getting shampoo in your eyes in the shower! It can severely impact your ability to enjoy life. The same goes for any loss of hearing. As an example, more than one third of the elderly people in our community suffer from excessive ear wax and this can have a significant impact on their day to day life, and their ability to hear and communicate effectively.

Through our work with patients across Australia, we know how uncomfortable and inconvenient hearing loss from a build-up of ear wax can be. We specialise in professional ear wax removal and use dry, safe and effective micro suction technology to gently and easily remove wax. This is the same technique that is preferred by Ear Nose and Throat specialists. Some people are more likely to experience a build-up of ear wax than others. These include people with narrow, hairy or curvy ear canals, who wear hearing aids, who use cotton buds or other objects such as ear plugs or ear bud headphones, who work in dusty or dirty environments or people with a hereditary disposition to wax impaction.

A build-up of ear wax can feel like blockage or fullness in your ears and can also lead to hearing loss or tinnitus. If you or an older member of your family are experiencing any of these symptoms, our 42

friendly and professional registered nurses can assist you. We are passionate about ear wax removal; it’s our core business and what we do best. The hearing-impaired community in Australia deserve to be treated with respect, care and dignity. These Australians work hard, care for families, and as such it is important that they experience the best quality of life that is available to them. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruption to Earworx services however we are now open with strict mitigation strategies in place to reduce the risk of transmission to both staff and clients. If you would like to know more about these please visit us at www. earworx.com.au.

EARWORX FOUNDER

Lisa Hellwege WAS SELECTED AS A FINALIST IN THE FEDERAL HEALTH MINISTER’S NURSE TRAILBLAZER AWARD 2021...

Lisa is the founder and Director of Earworx and a finalist in the Health Minister’s Award for Nursing Trailblazer’s for 2021.

how long you have been a registered nurse, and when was the idea of Earworx conceived and why?

Lisa identified a gap in the market across Australia for providing a safe and gentle micro-suction procedure for earwax removal after working for many years in the Ear, Nose and throat field. She believed there had to be a better way to access this procedure without extensive waiting times. This led to a process of discovery and entrepreneurship that resulted in the founding of Earworx in 2016, a nurse-led dedicated professional earwax removal service. Lisa’s idea to take a procedure previously only available via an ENT specialist in most parts of the country to the community was embraced by both the medical and audiology professions and by the public. Earworx has now enjoyed national expansion with over 19 clinics nationwide across five states. Lisa leads a national clinical team and has designed and now delivers extensive online education, practical-based training and ongoing support to 19 Registered Nurses working in Earworx. Motivated and inspired by a desire to maintain excellence in standards of care, Lisa works each day to ensure Earworx Registered Nurses work to the highest-clinical levels and are professionally supported within their scope of practice. Lisa is passionate about Earworx clients receiving the same high-quality care at every single visit, no matter where they live across Australia. She is an advocate for the advancement of nursing, and is inspired to empower nurses through their professional development as she believes their education, skills and effectiveness will result in the betterment of Australia’s Healthcare System.

I was working as a nurse for ENT specialists (Ear, Throat & Nose) who specialised in the removal of earwax through a micro-suction procedure.

Q & A WITH LISA HELLWEGE

B&L : Congratulations Lisa on your phenomenal career and of course being selected as a finalist in The Federal Health Minister’s Nurse Trailblazer award for 2021. Can you tell me 44

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

LISA : I graduated as a registered nurse in 1994 and the idea of Earworx was conceived in 2016.

However, after many hours of research, my inquisitiveness led to subsequently recognising there could be a better way for patients to access a “nurse-led dedicated professional earwax removal service.’’ This concept has been embraced by the medical profession and the public, when it became apparent the service I was offering would reduce extensive waiting times of consulting with specialists. B&L : Did you share and discuss the idea with others before proceeding, and what was your motivation.

LISA : My motivation has always been to provide a safe and reliable procedure for my patients and to maintain excellence in health care. Yes I discussed the idea with some fabulous ENT surgeons I was working with, before embarking on my own business. B&L : Where and when was the first Earworx clinic established and where was it located?

LISA : My first clinic was established in 2016 in Hobart.

B&L : You also lead a national clinical team with online education & practical-based training. That is a huge amount of work for one person. Do you have help maintaining this mammoth work schedule?

LISA : Over the years I have been able to manage a new level of operating with the help of my CEO and the support of a very capable and engaged head office team. B&L : What is next on the agenda for Lisa Hellwege?

LISA : Our plan is to continue growing the business , by opening more clinics and continuing to support all our nurses and ensure they work to the highest-clinical levels. STORY COURTESY OF CATHERINE COLUSSO

WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY, AND WHAT ARE THE BENFITS OF REFLEXOLOGY FOR A

better healthier life?

I was contacted a few months ago by professional reflexologist Marie Steinke from Reflexology Association of Australia, enquiring about advertising in my magazine. I had heard about Reflexology however, admitted that I did not know much about the procedure or the benefits of relieving pain through reflex points. Marie suggested that both my husband and I should try an hour long session each to relieve my husband’s very painful shoulder, and a sore hip for myself, which resulted from a fall. Marie organised for her colleague, Sue in Wodonga who is also an independent registered practitioner to treat both my husband and myself. With trepidation we both arrived and were soon put at ease by Sue, who explained the art of Reflexology. I was surprised and pleased that Sue also mentioned that she had been an Emergency and Paediatric Nurse for 40 years. Both my husband and I felt we were in good hands.

Sue’s clinic was a professional, calming and peaceful setting. After soaking our feet, Sue applied pressure using her thumbs, worked on our feet and explained the various pressure points that connected to organs and various parts of the body. We both thought at the time that maybe this wouldn’t work, but to our surprise after the session we were relieved of any pain and discomfort. The soothing techniques used and a feeling of total well-being resulted in a huge improvement to my hip and my husband’s shoulder felt so good, he had more movement back in his shoulder, we were both pleasantly surprised by the experience. This was about a month ago now and we both feel like going back to see Sue for another treatment. Sue explained that sometimes it can take a few sessions depending on the patient. We are both looking forward to receiving another session as I feel that one more session would be perfect. STORY COURTESY OF ROS WREN

Q & A : WITH PROFESSIONAL REFLEXOLOGIST MARIE STEINKE @ REFLEXOLOGY ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA B&L : How long have you been in the medical field and have you always been a Reflexology practitioner?

MARIE : I have been a Registered Nurse for 40 years and Reflexologist for 10 years. B&L : Can you explain how reflexology works?

MARIE : Reflexology has been around for 4,000 years and is a non-invasive therapy where you remain fully clothed. It works on 46

a principle that the feet, hands, face and ears have reflex points and when stimulated activate energy throughout the body which may relate to an organ, muscle or bone. B&L : What ailments can reflexology assist?

MARIE : reflexology can assist with many ailments such as anxiety and stress, the nervous system, fertility, constipation, palliative care and cancer.

B&L : Does the client feel better after one session or does the client require follow-up sessions? MARIE : All clients are different, however many clients have expressed the feeling of “walking on air’’ after receiving a treatment. B&L : How long does one session take?

MARIE : A Reflexology session can last for an hour, however this is subject to your age and state of health and the method being used. B&L : What is the most common ailment that clients confront you with? MARIE : As a result of COVID we are dealing with a lot of stress and anxiety. B&L : Does Reflexology work for all ages? MARIE : Yes it does.

B&L : Do you cater for patients all over Australia?

MARIE : Yes we have 600 Reflexology practitioners around Australia. B&L : What is your advice for a healthy mind and body?

MARIE : Good diet and exercise and have Reflexology treatments every 6 weeks. B&L : What is your advice for anyone who wants to organise a Reflexology session? MARIE : Go to our website www.reflexology.org.au

Did you know that Danish sporting teams use reflexology to help with injury management and prevention? So what is reflexology and how does it work? Reflexology is a holistic, non-invasive complementary therapy which benefits all age groups. It is based on the principle that the feet, face, hands and ears have reflex points that correspond to all the body’s organs and other structures such as muscles, ligaments and joints. These reflexes also reflect disturbances in the corresponding part of the body so if you have a sore knee, the knee reflexes in your feet will also feel tender and tight. By applying appropriate reflexology treatment to these reflexes, the healing process can begin and the pain may reduce. Reflexology can also assist in improving your general wellbeing so that injuries are less likely to occur in the first place. A reflexology treatment can take up to one hour and is extremely relaxing. Only

the fingers and thumbs are used to apply pressure to the congested reflexes and care is taken not to cause undue pain. A trained reflexologist will focus the treatment not only on the area of pain and restriction, but also on stimulating the lymphatic and circulatory systems to take pressure off nerves and reduce inflammation. planet

“ We do not inherit the

earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.

- Native American proverb

For 50 years, Greenpeace has been fighting to protect the environment, and we do so without financial support from governments or corporations. But, did you know that 10% of our campaigns are funded by gifts in Wills? It is a powerful and increasingly popular way of making a difference for future generations. Your gift will serve to honour your memory and leave a legacy for the planet. 48

Greenpeace exists because of everyday people who want to see a positive change in the world. By immortalising your values with Greenpeace, you will be joining a growing community of thousands of passionate people who care about nature and want to be remembered for making a difference long into the future. Many of our supporters take care of their loved ones first, and then leave a percentage to Greenpeace. Every gift, big and small, is incredibly meaningful and enables us to protect the Earth for many years to come.

Learn more how you can protect the future of our planet by visiting our website Some of our recent victories include convincing supermarkets to phase out plastic bags and protecting the Great Australian Bight from oil drilling - As Greenpeace gets no funding from the government or corporations, those victories were only possible thanks to our supporters and volunteers!

Testimony from Maxine Godley, Greenpeace donor and gift in Will supporter: “I want this planet to survive - and be liveable for our new generations ...and it’s already in trouble. The 2019/20 Black Summer fires showed every one of us in Australia - and the watching world - just what our changing climate can do. We can slow that down...and we MUST. I have been watching Greenpeace since my 20s and I’m in my 70s now. Getting older makes us look forward; have we done all we want to do? I’m still fighting fires with a Rural Fire Brigade..and I guess that’s time-limited. I’ve always watched with admiration as Greenpeace does and says the multitude of things I wish I could - or I wish I had. Their non-violence, their courage always watching, always reporting ...their work is unceasing and they do it on behalf of us all. They give our poor battered planet a voice. That is why they are the first on the list in my Will. I want to leave something behind for what is most important to me.”

We understand that creating your Will is a very personal and private process, and we will always respect your confidentiality. Penguins need your help

What's black white, black white, black white…. A waddle of penguins gliding across the ice! There’s no denying that penguins are one of the cutest species going around. But unfortunately, there is also no denying their home in the Antarctic and surrounding oceans is under threat from climate change. Our ship the Arctic Sunrise is currently in the Antarctic to raise the alarm for our oceans in crisis and the threats they face, including destructive fishing, deep-sea mining, and climate change. Our team and scientists onboard have already discovered new penguin colonies that sadly reveal the impacts of the climate crisis.

Arctic Sunrise is an ice-strengthened vessel operated by Greenpeace. The vessel was built in Norway in 1975 and has a gross tonnage of 949, a length of 50.5 metres (166 ft) and a maximum speed of 13 knots (24 km/h; 15 mph). She is classified by Det Norske Veritas as a "1A1 icebreaker" (the second highest ice strengthening notation at the time of construction). 50

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE

We found new evidence of Gentoo penguin - usually at home in warmer parts of the Antarctic - breeding on the eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula, where until recently it was far too icy to successfully raise chicks. Before this discovery, only one solitary Gentoo nest had been found this far south, but researchers have now discovered a colony of 75 Gentoo chicks on Andersson Island. This shows how a warming climate is driving behaviour change of precious wildlife on the Antarctic continent. Governments so far have failed to create protected ocean sanctuaries in Antarctic waters, leaving penguin habitats at risk. A strong Global Oceans Treaty will help protect penguins from destructive industries including industrial fishing and give them the best chance of surviving the increasing impacts of climate change.

Here’s what our scientists currently in the Antarctic have to say: “This is climate crisis happening right in front of our eyes. In the Antarctic, one of the most remote places on Earth, we are seeing a process where this species of penguin is spreading into new habitat and breeding further south: a biological manifestation of sea ice loss.” Louisa Casson, Greenpeace Protect the Oceans campaigner currently onboard the Arctic Sunrise “Penguins are a sentinel species and a great indicator of the health of the Antarctic ecosystem. They are experiencing significant changes in the Antarctic due to the rapidly changing climate and industrial fishing. A recent expedition to the Antarctic found that chinstrap penguin colonies at Elephant Island had collapsed, some by as much as 77 percent in the last 50 years.” Dr. Heather J. Lynch, Professor of Ecology & Evolution at Stony Brook University, one of the expedition’s lead.

In just a few weeks, world governments will meet at the United Nations to discuss a Global Oceans Treaty to create protected ocean sanctuaries. This is the best chance we have at protecting 30% of oceans by 2030. We've received so much support for our Protect the Oceans campaign - adding over 6,000 signatures from Greenpeace Australia Pacific supporters just this week. But we must reach our target of 4 million global signatures to show governments that we're watching and we want protection for our oceans and marine wildlife, now! A new Global Ocean Treaty would overhaul the failing system of global ocean governance that has allowed the expansion of harmful activities and seen wildlife decline at alarming rates.

It’s only together, with your support, that we can push to protect our oceans at the UN.

“I am beyond excited that we can

finally bring this show to Australia. The response to 9 to 5 from around the world has been incredible. The overwhelming positive fan reaction to this universal story tickles every rhinestone on my body. I can’t wait for more people throughout Australia to have a good ole singalong, and the time of their life.’’ DOLLY PARTON

This sensational smash-hit musical was inspired by the 1980 hit film of the same name. The Australian production is being performed by a sensational cast, including Casey Donovan, Eddie Perfect, Marina Prior, Caroline O’Connor and Erin Clare. The musical tells the story of Doralee, Violet and Judy, three enterprising workmates who are pushed to the edge by their egotistical and mean-spirited supervisor Franklin-Hart Jnr.

The three unlikely friends resort to wit and revenge and learn there is nothing they can’t do, even in a man’s world. The mischievous trio dream up a no holds barred scheme to kidnap and turn the tables on their controlling supervisor in the most hilariously defiant way.

Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin played the three main characters in the original movie. The film’s premise successfully highlighted the dynamics between men and women in the work place, portrayed brilliantly by the stellar cast. The musical captivated audiences when it premiered in Los Angeles in 2008 and Broadway in 2009. It received fifteen drama award nominations including an Oscar, Grammy and four Tony award nominations.

The nominations also included a win by the Queen of Country, Dolly Parton for the musical score for her much-loved hit song 9 to 5, which launched her career into popular mainstream culture. STORY COURTESY OF CATHERINE COLUSSO

NEW TRANS TASMAN SERIES DATES LOCKED IN BY LACHLAN WILLIAMS After several delays caused by COVID complications, new dates have been finalised for a much anticipated Trans Tasman Test Series. The Australian Jackaroos will return to the green for the first time in more than two years from June 4-6 this year, taking on rivals New Zealand at the Gold Coast’s Club Tamborine Mountain. The Jackaroos last competed as a unit at the most recent Trans Tasman series, way back in February 2020. A series was originally scheduled to take place at Tamborine Mountain in early March this year but was postponed due to changing COVID travel restrictions between Australia and New Zealand. The series will serve as an important warm-up event ahead of the Commonwealth Games to commence at Birmingham in late July.

Green speeds at Tamborine Mountain will mimic those likely to be faced in the UK, running much slower than usual for the Gold Coast. Teams of five men, five women as well as para disciplines will battle it out during the series. National coach Gary Willis said he is excited to see the series able to go

ahead despite previous difficulties. “This has been a long time coming, and I know our players are really keen to get back out there in the green and gold,” Willis said. “Only about six weeks before the Commonwealth Games, this will be a great chance to test ourselves in similar conditions; we can’t wait.”

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge celebrated her 40th birthday on the 9th January, 2022. She marked her milestone birthday in style, with three new official portraits taken by Italian fashion photographer Paolo Roversi, while the Royal family struggles with yet another scandal… Kate is regarded by multiple members of the media as “the next Royal Saviour’’ and is credited with “keeping the Royal Family afloat.’’

Kate met her future husband, Prince William in 2001, when they both attended St. Andrew’s University in Scotland. The two became friends and reportedly started dating in 2003. Their royal wedding in 2011, was watched by a global audience of 162 million people across 188 countries. Kate was able to transition effortlessly from commoner to treasured member of the British Royal Family. Since her marriage ‘English Rose’ Kate has relentlessly followed Royal protocol, supported numerous charities and undertaken royal duties and engagements in support of the Queen and “has never put a foot wrong.’’

She understands her role perfectly, which is paramount considering the pivotal role she will play in the monarchy as both the wife and mother of future kings. William and Kate are now the parents of three children and preparing for their roles as the future Prince and Princess of Wales and ultimately King and Queen consort. In stark contrast to the blissful life that Kate seems to be leading, her grandmother in- law Queen Elizabeth, who reached a massive 70-year milestone since ascending the throne, and should be reflecting on her life’s achievements. Instead has been forced to take drastic action to help protect her legacy, as the Royals become embroiled in yet another family scandal that threatens to destabilise the monarchy. It has been revealed that Her Majesty has ousted Prince Andrew from the Royal fold after a US judge ruled that Virginia Giuffre could proceed in her civil suit against the Queen’s second eldest son over her alleged sexual assault when she was just 17. Buckingham Palace announced that with the Queen’s approval, the Duke of York’s military affiliations and royal patronages have been removed. It also concluded that the Duke will now be defending the case as a private citizen. It is believed the Queen’s decision was heavily influenced by Prince Charles and Prince William.

Despite wars, family dramas and abdication the Royal Family has continued to endure throughout history. Only time will tell if this latest scandal can be resolved. STORY COURTEST OF CATHERINE COLUSSO
