FOREWORD BY THE HEADMASTER Don Bosco believed the purpose of education was the shaping of a ‘Dignified Man’, an education that is a human awakening; the liberation of a child through knowledge, wisdom, goodwill and love. Salesian College very much takes that message to heart and we live life to the full! We are a very busy school and our academic results in 2016 were excellent at both A Level and GCSE. But whilst results are important they are merely the end point and a launch pad for the future. The Salesian year is so much more and 2015-16 was typically full with trips within the UK to Winchester, the Peak District, Somerset, Alice Holt, Tregoyd, Oxford, the Lake District, Westminster, Kew Gardens, Edinburgh and Portsmouth to name but a few. Then Salesian overseas tours took in a Spanish Exchange to Barcelona, Ski trip to the Italian Alps, an Iceland trip, French trip to Avignon, Paris visit, Physics trip to Cern, the Battlefields trip to Belgium, a football tour of Holland, History trip to Berlin and golf and tennis trips to the Algarve. The College’s Share the Light visit to Zambia illustrates the embodiment of Salesian education, especially as this year students from our College joined with Salesian students from Barcelona whilst a distinguishing feature of our Year 12 experience is the annual visit to Lourdes. These experiences outside of the classroom are the essence of those school day memories and of the great learning that happens at the College, whilst also ensuring that we are a fully engaged place of work and play. This College has marked the lives of thousands of students through the years in no small part because of the caring and loving guidance of the staff and 2015-16 was no different. The College was also pleased to welcome many visitors throughout the year who shared their time and insights with our students. Most notably Cardinal Charles Bo SDB of Myanmar (Burma) who was able to join us to celebrate mass during his state visit to the United Kingdom. He spoke movingly about his work over many years in Myanmar to stand up as a witness to Christ in a country that has so seldom respected civil and human rights. He illustrated the widespread reach of the Salesian world and how Don Bosco unites many who may at first seem very different. The College has also enjoyed considerable sporting success with many local, regional and national titles being won in 2015-16. Individually students have achieved significant success supported by the College and its staff. Academic awards for Young Enterprise, for Public Speaking, the UK Maths Trust and Physics Olympiads have also given great depth to the students’ learning. Great joy was also to be found in the numerous public performances of music and drama from Grease to Chopin via the Melodica. The Salesian ideal is to recognise the needs of others and then do something about it. As well as raising in excess of £25,000 in charitable finds, the students and staff have donated immense numbers of hours in events, pilgrimages and charity drives such as their support for the Sean Devereux Children’s Fund, the local Foodbank, the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, Step by Step homeless project, HCPT Lourdes Pilgrimage, the Bolty fund and a very broad range of charities from cancer to emergency famine relief. Money raised for the Porridge Club in Zambia for example means that students in Zambia can go to school having been fed every day because of our efforts here in Farnborough. I must also thank the parents and the PTA who unfailingly support the College in events ranging from the Christmas Market to the great celebration of the Spring Ball at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. Our parents ensure that we are all working together to create this special community, and their support is always very much appreciated by everyone at the College.

SCHOOL CAPTAIN'S FAREWELL SPEECH About 7 years ago, I, alongside the rest of the Class of 2016, was sitting in the front-right area of the Hall. Patrick Wilson, then Headmaster, was delivering his famous, perhaps infamous, annual welcome speech. The older boys at the College may remember it as the ‘Ship Speech’. As I looked around that day, I saw the nervous faces of boys who, like me, having been the ‘big brutes’ at their junior schools, suddenly felt rather small. Suffice to say, that didn't last long! As the years passed and the voices deepened, we all underwent the learning curve that is adolescence. We made mistakes, forged friendships and worked hard (most of the time!). We aren’t the only ones who’ve changed. The College, without losing its warmth or ethos, has progressed with the times with the ongoing construction of new and increasingly impressive facilities. As the most astute among you will have noticed, Mr Owens is now the Salesian Ship’s Captain, to use Patrick Wilson’s metaphor. The last seven years have tragically seen the passing of loved members of our community, whose memories we cherish fondly. However, we have also seen the injection of fresh blood into the Salesian body: new students, teachers and support staff alike have all driven the College from strength to strength. At the end of my time at the College, it is appropriate that I say a few words of thanks on behalf of the Class of 2016: • Firstly, we give thanks to those teachers who have stewarded us through our transformation into young adults; who have instilled in each of us values that we shall carry for life. We are immensely grateful for your support and guidance, even if we might have a funny way of showing it sometimes! • Just as importantly, I wish to thank those who organise extra-curricular activities: be it on sports fields nationwide, or in Maths 4 at lunchtime on Tuesdays and Fridays! You have allowed us to develop beyond the confines of the classroom into the young adults we have now become. • I’d also like to thank my fellow members of the Student Leadership Team for all the different responsibilities you have carried out with such willingness and enthusiasm, for your good humour in challenging moments, and for the grace and decorum with which you have led the Student Body. • Finally, I thank you, the students. You are the fabric of this College. It is through you that the Salesian ethos flourishes. Be grateful for one another. I ask you to give thanks for what we have: for a community that transcends creed, colour and friendship circles, and for an education for life that we the Class of ’16 have enjoyed and that you, the future class of ’22, will profit from in the years to come. Congratulations to those who now enter office: to the new School Captain and ViceCaptains, to the new Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl, and to all those who will take up positions of responsibility over the coming year. I now bid you all farewell, with some parting words of advice: • Work hard: you will reap the seeds you sow. • Be grateful for those around you: they will be there for you when you need them most. • Remember: Virtus Sola Nobilitas: virtue is the sole nobility: it is only by being good that you can become great. Thank you and good luck. Charlie Whitehead

YEAR 7 GEOGRAPHY TRIP - A WALK IN THE WOODS At the end of the first half term, the intrepid Year 7s visited Alice Holt forest for a day of team building and orienteering. In the morning they had a fresher course on map reading before leading routes around the forest. The boys learnt how to read contour lines, symbols and grid references as well as how paper maps relate to the ‘real life’
environment. After lunch the boys worked in groups of five to collect as many markers as possible around the forest, using the orienteering map for clues. Our thanks go to all the members of staff who gave up their time to accompany the boys to make this trip possible.

AUTHOR CHRIS BRADFORD VISITS THE COLLEGE On Monday 9 November, the College was delighted to welcome award-winning author Chris Bradford for an action-packed afternoon with our Year 8 and 9 boys. Chris is best known as the author of the breath-taking Young Samurai and Bodyguard series. His books have been translated into 20 different languages and he has been nominated for 30 book awards. Before writing these books, Chris immersed himself in the subject areas by training and qualifying as a samurai swordman and professional bodyguard. This was to make for an exciting afternoon as he taught the audience some bodyguard techniques and asked a number of volunteers to act out a scenario that involved them protecting him (as the VIP, ‘Justin Bieber’) at a concert full of screaming fans! Later he talked about his Samurai Warrior books whilst demonstrating his very own genuine and magnificent samurai sword. A highly entertaining afternoon finished with a lively Question and Answer session and the boys were then able to buy the books and meet Chris, who signed each book with a personal dedication.

KIDS LIT QUIZ WINNERS The College entered two teams in the regional heat of the Kids’ Lit Quiz at the Duke of Kent School in Surrey on 17 November. The teams had worked hard through many break times to prepare for the quiz by practising questions and sharing their knowledge - in addition to reading lots of extra books in their spare time! There were more than 10 schools participating each with two teams, competing over 10 rounds. When the final scores were read out, Salesian Team One (Thomas Chan, Subigya Ranapaili, Angus Murray and Patrick West) were joint first. They then took part in a nail-biting tie-
break – which they won! They were rewarded with a trophy and Amazon vouchers. Well done to both Salesian Teams. Many thanks to Mr Quick for driving us there and back safely, through torrential rain!
SHAKESPEARE FOR SCHOOLS
Shakespeare Schools Festival is the UK's largest youth drama festival, a nationwide
celebration of the work of Shakespeare with over 1,000 schools participating in 150 professional theatres. A small group of students from the College took the romantic comedy 'Much Ado about Nothing' to G-Live on the 19 October. Keeping with the tradition of having an all male cast, the boys amazed the audience with their fast paced and witty interpretation of the story; leaving the audience roaring with laughter on a number of occasions.
ROTARY YOUNG WRITER COMPETITION Joseph Dodd won the District Rotary Young Writer Competition 2015-2016 and has now been entered for the RIBI (Rotary in Britain and Ireland) Young Writer 20152016.

LOWER SIXTH GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO SOMERSET Following the Prize Night celebrations the Lower Sixth Geographers embarked on a three day residential trip to Nettlecombe Court in Somerset. Having travelled through an impressive front they started by stopping in Bristol to compare residential areas. Starting at St Pauls they recorded services available and carried out an environmental quality assessment in this inner city area, which they then contrasted with suburban Clifton. They then went on to carry out a cost benefit analysis of the sea front at Minehead. On a thankfully dry Sunday morning, they carried out a survey of the River Holford

working from the dramatic Jurassic limestone at the mouth to the wooded and picturesque source in the Quantock Hills. The students were required to collect data in order to analyse how factors associated with velocity changed downstream. The purpose of the weekend was to allow the students to experience fieldwork in preparation for their skills exam in the summer. Fieldwork remains an integral part of all geography education, and there is no substitute for learning directly about the untidy real world outside the classroom. Our thanks to go to the Nettlecombe staff, for their warm welcome and constant good humour.

FR WILLIAM JOSEPH BOYD SDB MBE 1917 – 2016 William Joseph Boyd, affectionately known as Bill by his family, confreres and friends, was born on the 2 November 1917 in West Belfast. He entered the Salesian Novitiate, Beckford in 1937 and made his First Profession as a Salesian of Don Bosco on the 3l August 1938. After ordination, Bill spent a year at the Salesian
Press in Battersea, followed by a year in Blaisdon and two years working for Salesian Publications in Pallaskenry, Co. Limerick, Ireland. Whilst working in Blaisdon he became the Catholic Padre to the Gloucestershire Army Cadet Force for the northern half of the county, holding the rank of Captain. He also became the RC Chaplain to RAF Innsworth. He was awarded the Cadet Forces Medal for his long and meritorious service of 13 years. In recognition of his dedicated Salesian pastoral ministry as a chaplain, Bill was made a Member of the British Empire and he also received the papal award Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice.
FR FRANCIS SUTHERLAND SDB 1927 – 2016 Fr Francis taught in Farnborough for a year (195253) and again from 1974 until his retirement in 1997. In September 1944 Frank went to Salesian Missionary College, Shrigley Park, in Cheshire as a seminarian. He made his First Profession as a Salesian of Don Bosco on 8 September 1947 and his Perpetual Profession on 24 May 1952. He was ordained as a Salesian priest

on 13 July 1958. Fr Francis came back to Farnborough in 1974 and was a very dedicated and enthusiastic History teacher (his excellent examination results reflected his ability). His enthusiasm fired the imagination of his pupils. Frank took over as Deputy Head from Br Michael (who became Headmaster) from 1983 to 1988. He also took over Br Michael’s role as liaison between the Past Pupils Committee and the College until his retirement. His historical flair was again in evidence when in 2001 he produced the splendid magazine ‘Many Lives through Many Eyes’ recalling and commemorating the hundred years of Salesian presence in Farnborough.

BRINGING HISTORY TO LIFE All of Year 9 and History students of Year 10 were fortunate enough to watch a Living History presentation by Dickie Knight. Mr Knight is an experienced presenter, actor and costume maker. Many of his costumes and props have been used in film and television productions. The presentation we saw brought alive the events of World War One in a fun and interesting way and Mr Knight spoke with great passion about this vital part of our History
EPQ VISIT TO THE BRITISH LIBRARY On Wednesday 9 September, 10 Upper Sixth students along with Mr Adam Lyons and Miss Annette White visited the British Library in London. The purpose of the trip was to provide the students with an introduction to research and presentation skills needed to complete the EPQ. The day involved a tour of the library including seeing the famous artefacts such as the original lyrics for famous Beatles’ songs. The students were asked to research a topic and present it back to a small audience which was a challenging but very useful activity.

FESTIVAL OF LANGUAGES
FARNBOROUGH
During the last week in September, Salesian College hosted its third Festival of Languages. This time we welcomed a former Salesian student, Paris RaymanBaccus, who had completed his degree in Languages (Spanish and Arabic) at the University of Durham with first class honours. During our School Assembly,
Paris gave an insight of his university life, his studies and his travels around the world using languages. The Assembly closed with two Argentinian tangos performed by professional dancers, Flavio and his partner Alex. Other activities were daily organised such us a dance workshop, calligraphy and taster lessons in different languages such as Russian, Portuguese, Mandarin, Arabic, Japanese and French Reading competitions. Wonderful themed food was presented during the week as well as a fantastic French Breakfast for the Lower School. It was an interesting and fun week for all of us and we cannot wait until next one arrives to experiment with languages again!

SPANISH EXCHANGE AND IMMERSION WEEK Fifteen Sixth Form Spanish students and three teachers travelled to Barcelona from 10th to 18th December 2015. The aim of the trip was for the students to familiarise themselves with Spanish and Catalan culture as well as improving their fluency, understanding and accuracy of the Spanish language. Our Lower Sixth students were hosted by their exchange partners and their families during this time and attended daily lessons at Salesian College Sarria. Amongst other cultural visits and activities they enjoyed a cinema trip, a Gaudi tour, a visit to the holy Monastery of our Lady of Montserrat and to the Tibidavo Mountain. The Upper Sixth students immersed themselves in a study week in Barcelona, a total immersion course in advanced Spanish, tailored for them. The trip to the Dali Museum in Figueres was a highlight. They were also involved in a cinema visit and other projects. I would like to congratulate all students who took part in the trip for their exemplary behaviour and attitude. My thanks also go to Mr Owens
for making the effort and visiting us, to Mr Melvin and Mrs Kirby-Thompson whose hard work, company and professionalism proved invaluable, to the teachers at Version Original who prepared an excellent course and to the Salesian school in Barcelona who welcomed us so generously and kindly as it has been the norm for the last 14 years. We cannot wait to reciprocate here in Farnborough in the summer term and make the group familiar with British language, traditions and the weather forecast! PERFORMING ARTS EVENING
On Friday 4 December the school held it's annual Performing Arts evening, hosted by Matthew Smith and Seth Thomas. Once again the evening was filled with a variety of performances from students throughout the school. Particular highlights were: Will Gardner and Ben Williams performing Bill and Ben's Geordie Kitchen, Max Coult's hilarious rendition of Tina Turner's 'Proud Mary' with a guest appearance from Mr Berryman. A group of Year 11 Drama students created and performed a silent scene entitled 'At The Cinema' and members of staff got up on stage for the first time at this event and performed a hilarious sketch about a school inspection. There were a number of brilliant singing performances too, Natasha Sales haunting rendition of 'Send in the Clowns' and an original song written and performed by Katina James and Oliver Graham are particularly worth a mention. All in all a fun evening was had by everyone who attended and over ÂŁ600 was raised for Share The Light and Cancer Research.

DREAMPARK THEATRE COMPANY PERFORM BIENVENUE À PARIS On 13th October, the Dreampark Theatre Company performed Bienvenue à Paris to Year 8 and 9 students. The students enjoyed watching the play which featured two cousins meeting in Paris. There was a surprise dinner at the end for the cousin's birthday. The audience followed the journey through Paris and ended with a party in the last scene. The students enjoyed a fantastic performance and some of them were invited on to the stage. Dreampark has been touring shows in French to UK schools for the last 11 years, and provided us with an excellent French experience.
CONGRATULATIONS TO MATTHEW PEARSON DipABRSM AND OLIVER WOODS ATCL Both students gave well attended lunchtime recitals in the Music School at the end of the summer term in preparation for their examination recitals and both make a significant contribution to the musical life of the College. Many congratulations to Matthew and Oliver for their outstanding achievements.
Two students of the College, gained recital diplomas awarded by the London music colleges. Oliver received the Associateship diploma of Trinity College, London for his recital on drum kit and Matthew’s Diploma of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music was awarded for his recital on the clarinet. These diploma examinations are at a significantly higher level than Grade 8 practical examinations and are considered to be an equivalent standard to that of first year higher education.

SIXTH FORM LEADERSHIP WEEKEND In early October, students in the Lower Sixth joined students from Alton Convent to enjoy a fantastic weekend in the Brecon Beacons in Wales at the very beautiful setting of Tregoyd House. The weekend focused on leadership activities and team building which included abseiling, archery, canoeing, Jacob’s Ladder, orienteering and
raft building. We work hard to make the transition into Sixth Form as straight forward as possible. Young people can relax and focus on working well when they are known and connected to others; the weekend serves to complete the transition into Sixth Form life for our Lower Sixth and have time to sink the odd raft!

SALESIAN COLLEGE VS ETON COLLEGE AT CHESS
On the evening of Thursday 12 November, 10 members of the Salesian College Chess Club set off for a friendly match against Eton College. Whilst the journey through rush hour traffic was longer than
anticipated, the warm welcome which we received at Eton and the challenge of the chess games played throughout the evening (and the food!) more than made up for it. Each student engaged in two main games against a matched partner from Eton with a break for refreshments mid-evening. Although a "friendly", both teams were keen to show their skills. 20 games were played with the score being Eton 10, Salesian 9 and 1 draw. Congratulations to all players, but particularly to Nehan Radia, Sam Casey and Oliver Kendall who won both of their games against some tough opposition.
CHARITY FUNDRAISING SLEEPOVER IN THE LIBRARY Twelve boys from Years 8 and 9 donated money to secure their place on the library floor for the evening! Having arrived at approximately 8.30pm on Friday 27 November, the boys wasted no time in setting up their camps for the night. They all then went over to the Sixth Form building for an evening of fun and games including pool, table football and a variety of board games - with sweets and chocolate thrown in for good measure! Once back in the Library, the evening was rounded off with the boys enjoying ‘War Games’ in the dark, led by Mr Maher followed by lights out around 12am. The 2015 Sleepover raised £400 (an amazing amount) for Mrs Mweete’s Porridge Club, a cause close to our hearts. This money will once again be used to provide a nutritious breakfast for many children over the next year.
A huge thanks must go to Mr Maher and Miss Worrall for making the event possible. We would also like to thank Mr Ogden and his wonderful Chartwell team for providing the much appreciated snacks, drinks for the evening and breakfast for the boys in the morning. Special thanks finally to the Maintenance Team for keeping the heating on for us and supporting us through the planning for this much anticipated event!

ENGLISH SCHOOLS CROSS-COUNTRY CUP SUCCESS The English Schools National Cross Country Cup was the first event of the new 2015-2016 season. The U13 team was made up of six Year 8 boys. Oliver Harris (4) and Elliot Allin (8) both ran very impressive races. Tom Horrell-Tidbury (19), Oliver Turner (24), Ben Whitehead (25) and Cameron Robinson (27) were excellent in tough conditions and demonstrated great determination. The first four to cross the line scored for the team event, which meant that Salesian finished with 49 points and were 2nd in the overall team event. The U16 event produced some excellent displays from our boys. Matthew Oakley (12) and Alexander Sparks (19) ran very well. Sam Moors (32) - making his debut, Timothy Marsh (33) and Sam Murphy-Snell (54) finished well. This meant that Salesian finished with 96 points, which was very good against strong competition. After success in the first round, the junior team moved on to the Regional Finals at Beths Grammar School, Kent. It was a tough race and, considering the quality of the field, the boys stuck to their task very well. Oliver Harris (19) was first over the line for the College, with Elliot Allin (23), Thomas
Horrell-Tidbury (28) and Cameron Robinson (45) being the four boys to score. Oliver Turner showed great determination to finish (51). Overall, the boys finished 7th out of 12 schools, which was a great effort!
INTER-SCHOOLS CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Year 7, 8 and 9 boys went to Down Grange on Tuesday 1 December to represent the College in the Inter-Schools Cross Country Championships. MASS OF REMEMBRANCE On Wednesday 11 November, Salesian College held its annual Mass of Remembrance in honour of those who gave their lives in war including our old boys remembered on the Rolls of Honour in the College Hall. The chief celebrant at the Mass was Fr. Nick Gosnell, Chaplain to H.M. Forces., with Year 10 students leading the Mass with a reflection on their trip to the Battlefields of Ypres Salient earlier in the year. The Headmaster read the names of the Salesian College Farnborough old boys who died in WWll before the laying of a wreath by School Captain Charlie Whitehead and Head Girl Raphaelle Broughton and the playing of the Last Post by Year 11 student Alexander Shutak. The College warmly welcomed former Headmaster Mr Patrick Wilson and his wife Helen to the Mass who kindly and very fittingly presented the College with one of the original ceramic poppies made for the

STEM DAY CHALLENGES 30 students from each of Years 8 and 9, including all members of the Salesian STEM Club were recently given the opportunity to develop their science, technology, engineering and maths skills by participating in a one-day challenge, supported by Lockheed Martin UK and the educational charity, The Smallpeice Trust. The theme for the day was "Sustainable Living". The boys worked in small teams to design and construct a storage reservoir to collect rainwater and then developed a pumping system to transfer the water to a second stage storage unit. The students were also required to design and build a cost-effective and efficient wind-turbine. Not only did boys have a specified time limit for their work, but they also had to operate within tight budgetary constraints
and to defined aesthetical requirements. Participation in the project was a great opportunity for students, helping them to further their understanding of the links between scientific and engineering theory and the application of that theory in a working environment. It also provided opportunities for the boys to learn about some of the career options available in the scientific and engineering world. All boys worked hard throughout the day, and a good deal of fun was had by everyone. When the final judging of solutions took place, one team's constructions stood out as being particularly effective and so congratulations are due to Alex LongLeather, Justin Mayhew, Will Barker, Will Gardner and Dominic Page-Tickell.

NATIONAL YOUNG HISTORIAN AWARD Salesian College enjoyed national success in the Historical Association’s Young Historian Awards, with Alexander Gurr winning first prize for the Key Stage 3 World War One category for his entry on ‘The Vickers Machine Gun’. The Director of the Young Historian Project, Dr Trevor James, commented that “Alexander’s entry was the best entry received.” Alex received a book token for £100. George Wisden and Giacomo Lawrance also caught the judges’ eye for their pieces
on the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst and Farnborough Airfield respectively. Both students received a book token for £25.
YOUNG ENTERPRISE BOTH COMPANIES WIN 1ST PRIZE! Two Young Enterprise companies entered the rather cold Basingstoke Trade Fair on Saturday 21 November. Cuppa had a stall selling packaged mugs with witty slogans and ASAP created an e-book with healthy baking recipes for children, as well as increasing revenue by raffling off a rather large bear! Both companies impressed the judges and won equal first place out of 16 stalls for most innovative product. Well done!

ST DUNSTAN’S BAKE OFF Following the sudden death of Mrs Smith during the summer holiday, St Dunstan's decided to hold a bake off to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Research. Each Form group made a showstopper (Mrs Kirby Thompson's storm trooper was epic, Ms Day went for a chocolate extravaganza, Mrs Primmer and Mrs Moseley wisely outsourced and Mr Priest's rugby themed cake didn't make it further than the staff room!), cupcakes and cookies. The standard of entries was incredible this year, and all entries were bought and consumed within 12 minutes raising an impressive £183.
YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS the other families. In hospital, you rarely get the opportunity to share experiences. All the teenagers were incredibly mature, articulate, resilient, strong and determined. It was very humbling.
Nick was nominated by his CLiC Sargent key worker for a Youth Achievement Award. She thought he should be recognised for continuing with his studies and achieving an A in his BCS GCSE whilst undergoing cancer treatment. We attended the ceremony on the evening of 26 September at the Holiday Inn, Sutton. As each of the teenagers walked up to receive their award, their achievements were read out. Needless to say, there wasn't a dry eye in the room. The best part of the evening, however, was speaking to
At our table was an 18 year old boy, James, and his parents. Although he has non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, the treatment is very similar to Nick's Leukaemia treatment. Like Nick, he was diagnosed as he began his GCSEs. James, however, was nearing the end of his three year treatment. He was able to tell us about his cancer experience and how he coped with school. James was there to receive an award for completing his A levels and being offered a place to study Environmental Science at Southhampton University. Many of the teenagers joked about 'chemo brain' and how it made revising so much more difficult. One girl spoke of taking one of her GCSEs the day after she had her transplant. She must have still been in isolation and extremely weak.

BLETCHLEY PROJECT LAUNCH - ENIGMA COMES TO SALESIAN! As part of the College’s ongoing commitment to providing educational enrichment and challenge in all areas of the curriculum, in November the College launched ‘The Bletchley Project Club’ for boys in Years 8 and 9. This project is designed to honour the role of World War II code breakers, based at Bletchley Park doing top-secret work for the war effort, decrypting enemy messages. The launch took place on Wednesday 4 November when 22 Key Stage 3 pupils attended a workshop run by Mr Thomas Briggs, Education and Outreach officer for Bletchley Park, hosted by the College. In
groups, boys were given various problems to decrypt to gain the code to open a locked briefcase filled with chocolate, with each group getting time to use the Engima machine to assist them. One group of Year 9 boys was successful in decrypting the six digit code and congratulations go to the winners Andrey Prince, Morgan Peters, William Gane and Jonathan Bowles. In subsequent weeks, club members have engaged in a variety of code-breaking activities hosted by the different departments, including Maths, English, Languages and Physics, with more subjects to follow.

YEAR 10 TRIP TO THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD On Tuesday 26 January 2016 a number of boys in Year 10 visited the University of Oxford, accompanied by Mr Bunyan and Dr. Carrel. This visit was designed to encourage able pupils in their academic studies and to raise aspirations regarding possible university destinations after leaving school. The day began at Christ Church, where pupils were given a talk by Ms Hannah Wilbourne, the Schools Liaison Officer, regarding admissions and life at Oxford. We then went on a college tour with a current undergraduate student and
had lunch in the spectacular dining hall. In the afternoon, we attended a workshop at the Computer Science Laboratories where we heard presentations from two current doctoral students regarding their current research. After this, we returned to Christ Church to meet Dr Rowena Archer, Lecturer in Medieval History, who ran a question and answer session concerning studying at Oxford or other top-level universities. It is to be hoped that the boys found the day both enjoyable and informative.

goals in the process, Salesian put in an excellent performance against Wavell in the semi-final, winning 3-0, and looking in good shape to take on an excellent All Hallows team in the final. In the first half Salesian College had their chances and were foiled by the All Hallows goalkeeper, and it took two stunning strikes from the All Hallows striker Owen Deans to win the trophy for All Hallows in the second half. Salesian College's player of the tournament was Jordan Addo-Antoine, who scored ten goals in six games, including two hat-tricks. A special mention for William Pinnell in goal who was superb. Sixteen GCSE students spent 5 days in the lovely French region of Provence, discovering the culture of the area and being immersed in French family life. They visited Avignon and its papal Palace, the Roman vestiges in Pont du Gard, NĂŽmes and Arles and studied the artistic influence the area had on famous painters such as Van Gogh in Arles and CĂŠzanne in Aix-enProvence. Evenings and Sunday were spent with their respective French families and our students revised their French skills and learnt about everyday life in France, tasting new food, learning new words and enjoying the South of France lifestyle. This resulted in the team finishing in 2nd place, which was a great achievement. Rui Pinto (30), Mark Gillingham (32), Alfie Mumford (38), Alexandre Gontard (41), Max Jenkins (42) and Daniel Crook (49) all worked very hard in a competitive race. These six boys made up the second team who came 7th in the team event. A LEVEL PHYSICS STUDENTS VISIT CERN
The A2 physics students travelled to Geneva at the end of January this year. The highlight of the trip was visiting CERN, where the LHC particle accelerator resides. The students learnt about how cutting-edge physics is conducted and explored some of the older equipment on display. This was a contrast to the day before, when they
visited the History of Science Museum. It was fascinating to see how science has come such a long way in a relatively short amount of time. The group also visited the UN in Geneva where they were given a guided tour of the new and old buildings, seeing the places where major political discussions are conducted and learning more about the member states. Evenings of the trip were spent out in Geneva, playing pool, eating all-you-can-eat pizza, bowling and seeing ‘The Revenant’ at the cinema. Two 18th birthdays were also celebrated, including mine! All in all it was an educational and enjoyable trip, well worth the travel. Zak Karimjee, Upper Sixth

LOURDES 2016 The Lower Sixth had the pleasure of making a pilgrimage to Lourdes, in the south of France over the Easter break. The aim was to aid the Central Services group from HCPT to help different groups throughout the week, making sure the vulnerable children had a fantastic time. From regional masses to massive gatherings, themed parties to visits to the mountains, the week was full of adventures, experiences and excitement for all. I was particularly content to help organise a pirate and princess themed party with group 42, all of whom were excellent children and full of energy. There were also locations for groups to visit, for example at Hosanna House, there were animals to hold and pet, so many of the
Salesian group were able to go with groups. Similarly there was a trip to the caves and beach where groups could explore and have fun in the sun. The highlight for the majority of us was the HCPT Diamond Jubilee Trust Mass, where we had a large number of the group making up the choir and a special dance group to give visual aid to the songs at the top of the altar. It was the most amazing experience to see so many children all so happy, joining in with the singing and dancing. In all, the pilgrimage was fulfilling and immensely enjoyed by all, staff and students. Olly Graham Lower Sixth

U15 RUGBY SQUAD WIN COUNTY PLATE A commanding performance by the Salesian Under 15 rugby team secured the Hampshire Plate trophy for the second time in four years. Although Cams Hill started strongly at the breakdown, our scrummaging was too strong from the off. Our forwards eased into top gear towards the end of the first half, laying the platform for some spectacular work from the backs, which resulted in ten tries. Leading by 29-5 at half time enabled the early introduction of the strong bench. Very well played, lads.
U18 RUGBY 7’S WIN HAMPSHIRE PRESIDENT’S TOURNAMENT drawing another. They went on to win the final of the Bowl competition, beating Farnborough Sixth Form 24-7. The forwards dominated many of the close encounters, with both scrum halves Dan Bamber and Alex Chalker causing constant pressure which released the backs to score out wide.
On 9 March, Salesian’s Rugby 7-a-side team played in the Hampshire President’s Tournament on blustery pitches at KES, Southampton. The team played extremely well in difficult conditions, winning four of their six games and
Top try scorers were Max Brennan with 4 and Ed Grosvenor with 6. Man of the Tournament was Michael Parnaby, the Captain, who played consistently throughout the tournament winning many turn-overs. The team included: Tom Field; Luke Evans; Josh Lane; Michael Parnaby; Ed Grosvenor; Jon Charles; Alex Chalker; Alastair McKinnon; Ed Wyn Griffiths and Max Brennan.

HOWARD FALCON-LANG On Wednesday 22nd June, Howard Falcon-Lang from Royal Holloway's Geology Department visited the college to deliver an interactive lecture on the topic of past climate change. Prof. Lang captivated his sixth form audience with his recollections from three visits to Antarctica researching the fossil record and what it can tell us about the world millions of years ago. The students learnt that temperatures and CO2 levels have been far higher than present day and that strange species,
including dinosaurs were able to flourish on the continent. Prof. Lang was then happy to take more wide-ranging questions on the topic. The session was an excellent introduction into what opportunities exist in further geographical study. The Depeartment hope to repeat this visit and attend lectures at Royal Holloway in the next academic year.

Lower Sixth Form students who had taken part in the HCPT pilgrimage to Lourdes at Easter played a prominent part in the liturgy, wearing their Lourdes hoodies and sharing their experiences and adding to the joyful atmosphere by leading the music and singing. The Cardinal gave an inspiring homily in which he reflected on the situation of the Church in Myanmar and the hopes of his country as it moves to democracy from military rule. He concluded with ‘May we all be miracle workers in our life by moving from what we are doing towards what we can do.’

ROYAL HOLLOWAY PHYSICS LECTURES This year we have attended the Royal Holloway Evening Physics lectures. Each one has covered a unique and interesting topic in the field of particle and experiential physics, such as Quantum Collective behaviour and the Higgs Boson. The lectures were well designed and allowed the topics, which are normally taught to degree students, to be easily accessible to everyone attending, regardless of age or physics background. The lectures were about and hour in length and presented lots of detail without overloading the audience. This helped us keep interest in what was being said. The lectures also gave an interesting insight into the lives of the researchers as before the lectures there was time to talk and ask questions to
the speaker and the many physics students who were present. Over all the lectures have been a informative and interesting experience which has opened up the possibilities of physics and shown us what may be in store for us if we decide to study in the field. Matthew Lloyd. Lower Sixth

CHESS - THE HAMPSHIRE MEGAFINAL
At 8.15am on Sunday 15 May, 10 intrepid Chess players set off for the challenge of the Hampshire Megafinal in Basingstoke. For many years, the College has taken part in the Delancey UK Schools’ Chess Challenge. The first round is played within the home school, with students competing against each other to win a place at the local Megafinal. In January, 26 College chess players fought it out in a series of seven games to try to secure their places. 10 of our best players won through, hence their seat in the minibus on that bright, but chilly Sunday morning.
Everest Community College hosted the Megafinal this year. Over 200 players from across Hampshire took part in a series of six games to try to secure a place in the next round. Our players performed valiantly against some tough opposition, particularly those in Year 10 who played against other students in each of the U15, U16, U17 and U18 categories. We were very proud of all who took part as all players won at least two of their games. However, star player was Sam Lawrence of 7 St Bede’s who won three games and drew two.

The Salesian College under 14 cricket team concluded a very good summer term by winning the District League final for the third consecutive year. They played against Weydon School at Rowledge CC on
Tuesday 6 July. Captain, Sean Hosty, won the toss and elected to bowl which proved to be an excellent decision as Weydon were dismissed for 74 runs of 17.5 overs with Lukas Brierley (3 wickets for 2 runs off 2.5 overs) and Joshua Fearnett (2-11-3) leading the way. The total was very attainable with the loss of only the wicket of Hosty (9 runs). Brierley (19 n.o.) and Jonty Sebborn (retd. 31 n.o.) steered the side home. This was a thoroughly deserved victory as the team has played 12 matches losing only one all term. Well done to all who contributed along the way!

HOLOCAUST REMEMBERED AT FARNBOROUGH On Thursday 21 April, Year 9 boys from Salesian College Farnborough took part in a day retreat on the theme of the Holocaust and heard the testimony of a Holocaust survivor. After an opening liturgy in the College Chapel, the 100 boys were divided into 6 groups and spent the morning in workshops, helping them to prepare for the afternoon’s speaker. Rudi Oppenheimer, now 84, was eight years old at the outbreak of World War Two. He spoke clearly and engagingly for 70 minutes, giving a fascinating account of his life before and after the invasion of Holland by the Nazis. With the aid of photographs he described the happiness and peace of his early childhood, shattered by the restrictions imposed on the Jews and the deportation of his family to a transit camp and eventually to BergenBelsen. He then answered questions from the boys for a further 30 minutes. Several staff and older students were able to attend part of the talk; these included two Year 12 students who had taken part in the ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ project and had shared their experiences with the Year 9 boys during History lessons.

The day ended with a short closing liturgy in the College Chapel, including an Act of Commitment to learn from the lessons of history and to stand up for those who are oppressed in our world today.

SPANISH EXCHANGE
In December, the 13th annual Spanish exchange programme began with seven year twelve students travelling to Barcelona to spend a week living with a Spanish family and attending a Salesian school in Sarria, the Northern region of the city where Don Bosco briefly stayed. We met our respective partners and their families for the first time at the airport and after spending the first night at home met the next morning at the college for an 8am start. We were able to experience lessons in Spanish and practice our linguistic skills, as well as getting to know the Spanish education system and culture. The Salesian community in Sarria teaches 2000 students the Bachillerato (A level equivalent) and vocational studies like textiles, wood and metalwork, and car mechanics. We received an extremely warm welcome from all the students and teachers at the college. Furthermore the families that we stayed with helped to create a relaxed environment where we could practise and improve our Spanish greatly. During the week we were also able to visit the many tourist attractions of the city. These included Castell de Montjoic, Mount Tibidabo and Montserrat where we were able to hear the choir sing at over 4,000 feet and see the famous ‘La Moreneta’ or black Madonna which is a statue of our lady housed in the

cathedral and marks the end of a pilgrimage for many. Furthermore, we spent a morning admiring the architecture of Antoni Gaudi at Parc Guell and La Pedrera, a house he designed in his iconic style. We very much enjoyed the week we spent in Barcelona, a beautiful and vibrant city, and the friendships we made with our exchange partners whom we waited with eager anticipation to see again in June. On the 21 June, we were finally reunited with our Spanish amigos. During the week, they were able to experience Farnborough in all its glory, as well as visiting London and Oxford where they were able to get a taste of the English culture. Whilst in the capital, we watched the Olivier award winning musical, Kinky Boots at the Adelphi Theatre. We also took part in the walk for Sean at the Sean Devereux Park in Yateley amongst various other activities. All in all, we would all strongly advocate the exchange to others as it is a fantastic opportunity to improve your Spanish skills whilst having a thoroughly enjoyable time. EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL During the first full week of August a group of nine Sixth Form students visited Edinburgh for the annual Fringe Festival. It is the largest Arts festival of its kind in the world, hosting over 3000 shows from 75 countries. Accompanied by Mr Berryman and Miss Kennedy, the students saw an assortment of show styles and genres including musicals, improvisation, comedy and physical theatre. On average the students attended 20 shows each in the five days, including a new musical ‘Paper Hearts’, stand-up comedian Stephen K Amos, ex Salesian students Robbie Smith and Anand Sankar in a hilarious ‘on the spot’ improvisation show, based on the popular television programme of the
1980’s, ’Who’s Line Is It Anyway’. It was a fantastic trip enjoyed immensely by everyone. This was the Drama Departments third biennial visit and given its continued success, it could become an annual event.

YEAR 7 HISTORY AND DRAMA TRIP TO WINCHESTER
On Monday 13 June, Year 7 morphed into medieval monks and took members of staff on a guided tour around Winchester Cathedral. The boys had to use their dramatic skills to film an advert regarding one type of monk from Winchester. There were choristers, abbotts, priors, guest
masters, novice masters and many more. The boys were provided with lots of information to support them and then set about designing and filming an advert to encourage novices to choose to fulfil this role in the monastery.

SCIENCE WEEK The Toothpaste Challenge After brief introduction to the features of a good toothpaste, the boys followed a set of instructions for making toothpaste, including mint flavouring and colour to produce their own versions. They then used the toothpaste made with a toothbrush to clean permanent marker ink from the white ceramic tiles and evaluated their results. Great fun was had by those who attended and there was not too much mess at the end
appear to have that kind of energy anywhere in the Universe and certainly not in the back of our Physics lab. This was a great opportunity for Year 10 and 11 students to find out more about our Universe, the galaxies around us and black holes. In a time when everyone is looking up at the International Space Station and thinking a British man is orbiting the Earth, why can’t we hope that one of our students could be next?
Quiz The Science Quiz (held at lunchtime on Wednesday 16 March) was written by Mrs Lyne and run by Mrs Kelly and Mrs Kent from the library. We had a huge turnout across years 7 to 11 and many of the teams had to stand as all the chairs and tables were taken. The quiz covered all the sciences and the question sheet had to be completed in a set time. This made for a frenzied, excitable atmosphere as each team worked together to agree answers. Mrs Lyne then read out the answers and the winning team were rewarded with chocolate treats.
Paper Aeroplane Competition On Tuesday lunchtime, budding aerospace engineers from key stage 3 were challenged to create a paper aeroplane that covered the greatest distance. Over 100 paper aeroplanes were launched and competition was fierce, but in the final moments Daniel Murray's plane flew to victory. Well done to all involved!
The winning team were : Max Curtis, Will Barker, Morgan Peters, Oliver White, Toby Johnson and Josh Fearnett.
Black Hole Presentation Sometimes, I wonder, if I could travel at the speed of light where would I go? Which galaxy would I want to visit? After Callum Swan’s brilliant presentation on black holes, it is pretty obvious that you need to avoid black holes if you want to survive. Callum’s presentation illustrated what scientists know about black holes, but also what they would like to find out about them in the future. A captivated audience was blown away by the use of excellent similitudes and the idea that, with enough energy, anything could be turned into a black hole (even Mr Owens!). Fortunately Callum also pointed out that we don’t
ICT - WiFi Using a simple WiFi signal booster that plugs into a household electrical socket , and a free app which can be downloaded onto any phone, students were able to test the WiFi signal strength at the optimum distance of 3 meters away. The boys then covered or obstructed the signal booster with various materials including, paper, cardboard, aluminium foil, tin foil, a sheet of copper, sheet of tin and a sheet of lead. Results revealed that the signal was reduced in strength with any material covering the booster, but with lead being the best blocker. However, even with lead the signal still got through - enough to continue to use the internet. In the final challenge, the boys used all of the materials together to try to achieve a complete signal block. They were unable to achieve this result as even with all the materials provided and some extras found around the classroom. A signal continued to register on the app and was strong enough to enable internet use.

YEAR 8 TRIP TO PARIS On Saturday 18 June, 48 Year 8 students and six members of staff (Mrs Stone, Mr Smith, Miss Kent, Mr James, Mr Urvoy and Miss Worrall) left for Paris on a four day fun extravaganza. On arrival in Ozoir-LaFerrrière, the group met the ‘animateur’ and tucked into a well-deserved and hearty French dinner! Sunday began with a full French breakfast, followed by a visit to the “Musée de l’Orangerie” and an art gallery of impressionist and post-impressionist paintings located in the west corner of the Tuileries Gardens next to the Place de la Concorde. The boys had lunch in the Tuileries Gardens followed by a tour on the Bateau Parisiens on the River Seine. After eating ice cream and taking a few pictures of the Tour Eiffel, the group visited the Notre Dame Cathedral and then went to the Montparnasse Tower where the boys whizzed up the 59 floors in just 37 seconds (in the lift, not the stairs!) to take in the spectacular Parisian views.

On Monday the boys went to Parc Astérix, the comic-book-inspired theme park with a Gallic flavour. Whether meandering round the attractions, watching the various shows or taking on the mighty ‘Tonnerre de Zeus’ ride, everyone had an enjoyable day despite the rain. On Monday evening, everyone enjoyed a French evening eating snails and tasting a selection of French cheeses. The boys had a great experience and most of them wanted to eat more snails. On Tuesday, the group left the campus and stopped at the Auchan hypermarket on the way home enabling the boys to put into practice some of their shopping vocabulary as well as spending yet more euros. The return journey went really well and the group made it home safely and were a credit to the school.

The summer Golf and Tennis Tour was the first one to be undertaken abroad by the College. The Amendoeira Resort, Algarve, proved a memorable location for our tour and we have provisionally planned to return in July 2018. The luxury accommodation and food were superb with a spectacular view from the main Clubhouse. We were even fortunate to be present to see Portugal win the Euros! All the boys enjoyed the resort swimming pool every day and night-time floodlit golf proved very popular with both tennis and golfers alike after dinner.
The golfers played six rounds including the two resort courses and the outstanding Oceanico Victoria, home of the Portuguese Masters event on the European tour. Excellent practice facilities enabled all the boys to have constant access to improve their game. The tennis players enjoyed two sessions of very high quality coaching every day from a team of four enthusiastic tennis coaches. Each session focussed on different aspects of the game including conditioning, shot selection and match play. A visit to play at the Pestana Clay Court Club was a highlight of the week.

SIXTH FORM STUDENTS VISIT ZAMBIA meal. This is sponsored by the selling of Porridge Vouchers at Christmas at our school. In addition, students visited families on the Nutrition Programme, run in the local community, to help give aid to those living in extreme poverty. This was a very humbling experience for all.
At the end of the summer term, a group of 15 Sixth Form students and 4 staff from Salesian Farnborough, along with 6 students and 3 staff from Salesian Sarrià, Barcelona, travelled to Zambia as part of the College’s Share the Light Project. The students and staff worked with vulnerable young women in the City of Joy in Mazabuka run by Salesian Sisters. They also visited the City of Hope in Lusaka on two occasions to play sport and visit the school based there. Stepping off the minibuses to a chorus of shouts, hands waving and beaming faces was an incredible experience. It is easy to see why it is called, “The City of Joy”. The students took part in cultural exchange debates on a radio station and at a local school. Topics ranged from importance of educating girls, to responsibility of businesses in helping the community. Students also visited a number of schools to teach lessons and see the Share the Light project in action. An unforgettable experience was witnessing the Porridge Club in action at Luyobolola School, where an incredible 700 students are fed each day; for many this is their only
At Magoye Primary School, students participated in the opening ceremony of a water pump system that members of the Salesian College Farnborough community had raised funds for. This means that children there no longer have to walk ½ a mile to collect water before school. At the City of Joy, the students from Farnborough and Sarrià worked together in supporting the girls with homework, helping at the Oratory for children from the local community and painting murals to commemorate their time there. The students from Sarrià, alongside our own Mark Eaton spent many hours helping to improve the infrastructure of the City of Joy and the environment that the girls live in. At the end of the trip the students all travelled to Livingstone to visit Victoria Falls and crossed into Botswana for a Safari. Seeing (and hearing!) a herd of elephants, watching hippopotamus’ lolling in the cooling waters and bouncing antelopes was an incredible way to conclude our time together. The whole trip was a moving experience for all involved and hopefully a starting point for the students to continue a journey of advocacy for the Share the Light project.
