A MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP THE DREAM THAT MAKES YOU DREAM

Dear Salesian Family,

This year, together with the Salesian family around the world, we celebrate the 200th anniversary of St. John Bosco’s dream. It is the “dream at nine years of age” that directed and set the trajectory of his life, inspired all his teachings, and defined the educational methodology that set him apart from other great educators. In this dream, guided by Mary, the mother of Jesus, he learned that he would transform the lives of young people of his time from unruliness, ignorance, immorality, and undisciplined habits to becoming upright citizens and good Christians, both for this world and the next, through “loving kindness.” He believed in cultivating their full potential not through coercion or force but through the free expression of their authentic selves. He believed that through an education based on “reason, religion, and loving kindness,” he could bring students happiness in this world and the next.

This dream was truly God’s dream for Don Bosco’s life. Each day, with the grace of God, he lived out the dream to its fullest. In doing so, he was instrumental in realizing God’s dream for each of his young people. As followers of Don Bosco, we, too, are helping to realize God’s dream for the lives of over 400 young men and women here at Salesian College Preparatory. Together with them, we dream that they will become scholars, educators, scientists, religious leaders, doctors, lawyers, or whatever they aspire to be, but most importantly, people of service and upright citizens in a world in need of healing and peace. We are supremely privileged each day not only to dream but also, through the pedagogy of loving kindness taught to us by Don Bosco and his disciples, to empower and equip our students with everything they need to realize their dreams. Our faith tells us that God created each and every one of us in His image and likeness. God has a dream that each of us will be the best we can be. Let’s join efforts to realize God’s dream for each of our young people. May our work bear fruit in making the world a better place. We begin this work here at Salesian! Mary, Our Help,

“THE SCHOOL WAS NOT THE END; IT WAS RATHER THE INSTRUMENTAL MEANS FOR IMPROVING THE WAY OF LIFE.” — ST. JOHN BOSCO

KEEPING OUR STUDENTS’ DREAMS ALIVE

Dear Salesian Community Members,

Since our doors opened over sixty years ago, we have worked to inspire the students entrusted in our care to become better citizens of the world. Salesian College Preparatory remains dedicated to nurturing the development of our students— intellectually, emotionally, socially, and spiritually, guided by the teachings of Saint John Bosco. With the support of the Salesian Community, we are able to combine the elements of home, school, church, and playground in a supportive and caring environment.

Our student body is a beautiful mosaic composed of students from many different cultures, races, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds. Providing an equitable education to a student body with many families that qualify for financial aid is often challenging, but a cornerstone of our mission. Our mission is, and always will remain, our guiding principle. In this issue, you will meet alumni who are contributing to the mission and learn why they think it is important. You will meet volunteers and parents who are stepping forward in service leadership, all in the name of keeping our students’ DREAMS alive!

The spirit of Don Bosco is about helping young men and women become self-sufficient and contributing members of society. Salesian College Preparatory aims to provide a holistic educational journey that goes well beyond the high school years. By working together, we can continue to find ways to build and strengthen this special place that many of us call home. There is no doubt that the supporters and donors honored in this issue of Salesian Magazine have been instrumental in keeping our school the vibrant and faith-filled community that it is today. We ask for your continued support to keep Salesian forever.

Thank you, as always, for believing in our mission and for supporting our community.

In Don Bosco,

Congratulations class of 2024

THE DREAM OF DON BOSCO IS STILL ALIVE

A Prayer for the Graduates

God of all blessings, we thank you for the gifts of our daughters and sons, for their excitement, their compassion and love, and for the experiences of the past four years. As they step forward into the world that awaits them, calm their fears with your loving and lifegiving presence. Guide their feet as they move through life, so that they may always walk in your light and live in the promise of your everlasting love. Amen.

AND THEY ARE OFF... THEIR JOURNEY CONTINUES

The graduating class of 2024 are spreading their wings and are off to colleges across the U.S., including UC Berkeley, UCLA, Swarthmore College, UC Davis, UC Irvine, Boston College, New York University, many of our California State Universities, St. Mary’s College, Dominican College, and University of San Francisco. We believe our graduates will make a significant impact on their respective communities and careers.

ACCEPTANCES

“Let us not forget to acknowledge the immense support we all have gotten from our parents, loved ones, and teachers that are here with us today, because anything is possible when you have the right people to support you.”

A JOURNEY TO HERITAGE AND EXCELLENCE: SALESIAN’S HBCU TOUR

This past Easter, an idea by Principal Kenneth Farr II ‘10 and Senior parent Tanara Bailey led sixteen juniors and chaperons on a five-day tour of six Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The tour highlighted each school’s mission, academics, athletics, and campus life, empowering students to make informed decisions about their futures while connecting with Black history and culture. This experience deepened their appreciation of Black excellence and allowed them to envision their own paths in higher education.

WHAT MAKES HBCU’S SPECIAL AND IMPORTANT?

• HBCUs have a rich history of providing high-quality education to Black Americans and other students of color.

• HBCUs excel in terms of degree completion rates for students.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO ALL OF US AT SALESIAN? WELL... WE ARE MAKING HISTORY!

• First Black principal.

• First HBCU trip.

• A unique experience that sets Salesian apart from other high schools in the area.

“The first HBCU Tour left an unforgettable mark on my heart. Our diverse students saw leaders at historic colleges, showing them they too can achieve greatness. I look forward to continuing this tradition and offering more Salesian students this opportunity.” - KENNETH FARR II

Salesian Roots: Alumni Highlights

BUILDING A BRIGHTER FUTURE

Laura Ivancich (Tuffnell) ’09

After earning a Bachelor’s in Theatre Studies from Sonoma State University and an Associate’s degree in Business Management, Laura built a fulfilling career with the City of Merced. For over seven years, she served as a Management Analyst for the Engineering Department, overseeing budgets for Capital Improvement Projects, assisting with project management, and monitoring federal and state grants. Personally, she married her high school sweetheart, Spenser Ivancich, and they have two wonderful children. Laura attributes her success to her time at Salesian, which laid the foundation for who she is today, and she is a proud alumna.

A JOURNEY FROM TEACHER TO JUDGE

Stephen Hedstrom ‘66

Stephen graduated from the University of San Francisco in 1970 with a Physics degree and taught Math and Physics at Salesian High School in 1970-1971. He then attended UC San Francisco Law (formerly Hastings College of the Law) from 1971 to 1974. Stephen served three terms as Lake County, CA, District Attorney and three terms as Superior Court Judge. Now retired, he reflects on

TRUTH DISPELS DARKNESS

William Heidenfeldt ‘94

When William attended Salesian from 1990 to 1994, the school’s motto, “Umbram fugat veritas” (“Truth dispels darkness”), resonated with him more than he realized. Upon returning as a teacher in 2015, that motto continued to guide him as a learner, teacher, and administrator. Salesian taught him to seek truth and wisdom, enriching his life. As a student, educators like Fr. David Purdy, SDB, Mrs. Flannery, Madame Eichman, Mr. Chambers, Ms. Benau, Mr. Kjera, and Coach Anthony personalized the curriculum, inspiring his love for learning. Now, as a Salesian administrator and teacher, he strives to emulate their love and guidance, adapting their approaches to his own style. Salesian education is truly a matter of the heart for this happily dedicated educator.

Last fall, he had the opportunity to meet and ask a question to Vice President Kamala Harris. In the spring, he studied and volunteered in Barcelona, Spain, for three months, briefly returning to the U.S. when invited by the Vice President to her Black History Month Celebration of HBCU leaders at the White House. His experiences at Salesian were pivotal in shaping his path, and he proudly uplifts and celebrates Black education and excellence.

writing, and helped him stay connected to his Catholic faith, which was important to his family, especially after his father became a deacon. He also appreciates the tuition assistance his family received. Maya graduated from CSUMB with a Bachelor’s in Kinesiology in Winter 2021 and earned a Master’s in Athletic Training from CSULB in June 2024. She now works as an athletic trainer for the professional USL Monterey Bay Football Club Union’s 1st and 2nd teams.

The family’s legacy at Salesian has been vital to their achievements, and they are proud to continue this tradition of excellence.

Around Campus

The arts have always been a place for students to express themselves, create, and challenge the limits of what is possible. The Visual and Performing Arts Department believes that the arts are an integral part of education. The arts offerings at Salesian are firmly established and, with your support, help students find their voices and their ability to change the world through their visual ideas. Every single person has the ability to expand his or her own talents when given time and encouragement.

PAVING THE WAY VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS BUILDING

A FOUR-YEAR PATHWAY

Starting in Spring 2023, Salesian embarked on an exciting journey to expand its offerings by exploring a new, four-year program within the Visual and Performing Arts Department. Noticing the growing number of passionate young artists among our applicants, we set out to create a program that would give these creative minds an interdisciplinary experience, equipping them for success in both higher education and careers in the arts, entertainment, and media industries. We’re thrilled to announce that in August 2024, we debuted the first course in our Visual and Media Arts Pathway: Foundations in Art Design.

“Salesian believes that the arts are an integral part of education. The department intends to foster each student’s artistic, musical, or dramatic capabilities in order to allow the student to express his or her creativity.”

Hands-On Learning at Salesian: From Dissections to Prosthetics

Students don’t just learn science—they experience it. Through the hands-on PLTW pathway, they dive into the intricacies of biology by performing dissections, meticulously crafting internal organ clay pieces to fit into skeleton figures, and even working with prosthetics. This immersive, practical approach not only enriches their understanding but also fuels their passion for biomedical sciences, preparing them for future careers in these dynamic fields.

Faculty member Cassie Re had this to say: “Being a PLTW teacher allows me to blend two of my passions — science and medicine. Having the opportunity to teach these subjects to eager future STEM professionals makes the experience even better, especially when I see how excited they get about the curriculum. This program provides our students an amazing opportunity to explore different areas of science and medicine, including biomedical sciences, human body systems, medical interventions, and biomedical innovation.”

LAUNCHING FUTURES IN MEDICINE

Salesian’s PLTW pathway is where dreams of a medical career take shape. Over four years, students dive deep into Biomedical Science, igniting their passion and paving the way to prestigious universities. The Class of 2024 is proof, with record admissions to top schools like UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, and UC Davis, where they will study fields like Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biomedical Engineering, bringing their ambitions to life.

Donors Make Dreams come

FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

On behalf of the Board of Directors, our sincere thanks goes to all of you who have generously contributed to the 2023-24 Annual Fund. Your contributions over the past year have revitalized our learning spaces, funded crucial facility updates, and enhanced the exceptional educational experience we provide.

Your annual contributions are vital in sustaining the excellence of our school. Personally, my support for Salesian is driven by the sense of community I feel in the presence of current Salesian students and alumni. Although my educational experience didn’t include a Salesian diploma, I have watched as a sports coach, teacher, and Board member, the incredible journey our students go on during their time at the school. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the unique environment that Salesian fosters.

Every day, we live out Don Bosco’s mission to provide outstanding education to those in need. I hope this year’s Salesian Magazine captures the incredible work we’re doing at Salesian and illustrates how your support—now and in the future—makes a profound difference in the lives of every student.

Salesian Sports PRIDE Accomplishment

The 2023-24 sports year wrapped up with incredible achievements from our student athletes and dedicated coaches. Here are the highlights:

BOYS BASKETBALL

The team had one of the most memorable seasons in school history, not only winning the League Championship, but, for the first time in program history, the Open Division NCS Championship and the Open Division NorCal Championship. They were 90 seconds away from winning their first-ever Open Division State Championship. The team succeeded off the court with a Team GPA above 4.0.

FOOTBALL

Reached the NCS Championship game, continuing their impressive streak.

BOYS SOCCER

Claimed their first League Championship in 20 years and secured one of the most memorable NCS victory in school history, winning in penalty kicks in the pouring rain.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Won the League Championship.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

The team won the League Championship and the NCS Division I Championship. Special shout out to our very own President and Coach, Stephen Pezzola, Coach Re, and all of the girls’ basketball coaches.

NCS Team Scholastic Award

SOFTBALL

Won their first League Championship in 10 years. Coach Bradbury was a player the last time our softball team won the league.

Our Athletics Program is a cornerstone of the holistic education we provide to our students. We are dedicated to offering a positive, challenging, and fair athletic experience that emphasizes personal integrity, sportsmanship, wellness, and the fulfillment of each student athlete’s potential.

Salesian’s Boys Basketball, Boys Track, Football, Girls Swimming, Boys Volleyball, and Baseball teams were honored with the North Coast Section (NCS) Scholastic Championship Team Award. This prestigious award recognizes teams that excel in both academic performance and interscholastic athletics.

The award is given to the TOP 3 NCS varsity teams in each division or classification with the highest composite GPA of 3.0 (unweighted) or above. This year marks the most teams from Salesian to win the award in a single year.

We are beyond proud of our athletes for their dedication to balancing academic excellence with their sports commitments.

Congratulations to all of our student-athletes!

Salesian in Three Words:

Striving for Excellence

PREPARING STUDENTS FOR SUCCESS:

Salesian’s rigorous curriculum, enriched with challenging courses and activities, prepares students for top colleges and universities. We nurture the whole student through academics, co-curriculars, and valuesbased education rooted in social justice and excellence. Our students are challenged to reach their fullest potential, becoming well-rounded individuals ready for the modern world. Year after year, nearly all our graduates enroll in colleges nationwide.

“I'm always excited by the opportunities available for me to show off my passions, whether that's in theater productions, art shows, or academic achievement ceremonies. Many of the activities outside the classroom are so easy to join, and hard work is always celebrated and respected at Salesian.”

DON BOSCO’S VISION IS STILL ALIVE TODAY!

We gather as the Family of Don Bosco, the Salesian Family, friends of Don Bosco, and young people. We celebrate 200 years of his enduring presence in the Church and the world, dedicated to the well-being and education of the young.

“Salesian provides the high school education to ensure the child is receiving the WHOLE education. Salesian provides the parents and the student with the tools and support to ensure success while also continuing the growth and development for a strong well rounded empathic person.”
