REDEFINING SUCCESS, IN AND BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Salesian College Preparatory has been redefining what student success looks like since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In partnering with Stanford University’s Challenge Success program, a team of students, faculty, staff, and administrators identified and designed new ways to carry out the Salesian mission of educating students “to develop [successfully] into good citizens for the betterment of society and the glory of God”.

Through participating in four Challenge Success conferences with a focus on student socialemotional well being, Salesian has been making concrete changes to the daily bell schedule, homework load, and assessment design.

In Spring 2022, Salesian piloted a new bell schedule that reduced the number of classes per day while lengthening the amount of time for each class. The goal was to provide more inclass time for teacher instruction and guided student practice. The school added a biweekly Flex time to its schedule that provided additional opportunities for faculty and students to connect through tutoring, social-emotional learning activities, game play, and physical exercise. The pilot proved successful, and Salesian expanded the schedule with Flex time activities through the 2022-2023 school year.

Salesian College Preparatory is committed to building an effective educational model that truly embraces the uniqueness of every student and supports the individual paths of success that take place in the classroom and over the course of a lifetime.

Flex time were steps in the right direction, and yet, still held untapped potential. In partnership with the Challenge Success team, faculty and staff continue developing the bell schedule, in hopes to improve the rotating order of classes and increase time between students and teachers. Additionally, teachers pursue innovative and meaningful opportunities for Flex time, creating ways to share their personal talents and interests with students beyond the classroom.

Student and faculty surveys from Spring 2023 showed that the revamped bell schedule and

Through the partnership with Challenge Success and the Stanford Graduate School of Education, Salesian College Preparatory is committed to building an effective educational model that truly embraces the uniqueness of every student and supports the individual paths of success that take place in the classroom and over the course of a lifetime. Biggest accomplishment so far. I’m most proud of being ‘Most Improved’ on my softball team this past year. It was a tough season, and I had to learn new skills like pitching. Although it was not easy, I improved and contributed to my team’s success.

How Salesian changed me: When I first got to Salesian I was really shy. I would do what others wanted of me, instead of what I wanted to do. I made great relationships with people who wanted to learn the real me and see me for who I truly am. I am stronger and more confident than ever.

What makes Salesian special? As Salesian is a small school, teachers and students are closer and are able to communicate better. Salesian allows for great relationships to form.
