ABSTRACT

Empty nest syndrome is a psychological response to the change or transition in life elicited in and affecting almost all members in a family, especially the elderly. This syndrome is a non-clinical condition that many parents face as their children grow up and leave homes to study, for work or when they have gone through marriage. The number of people suffering from empty nest syndrome is increasing as Malaysia become an ageing nation by 2030. The study by the National Population and Family Development Board’s (LPPKN) shows 23% or 538,000 out of 2.4 million senior citizens in Malaysia face empty nest syndrome. This syndrome can lead a person to mental health problems and stress. They feel depression, a sense of loss of purpose, feelings of rejection because of loneliness. With the lack of understanding of the syndrome, people who experience this syndrome doesn’t realize they were facing this syndrome and not to get the proper treatment. However, not all mental health facilities provide an excellent space for empty nest syndrome. Mostly the hospital or therapeutic centre offer a standard treatment service for mental health problem such as a therapist. Therefore, this project aims to provide different treatment way to treat empty nest syndrome, which is with physical activities, mental support and spiritual guide. This project also incorporates a biophilic element, which is plants, natural ventilation, materials, water, natural lighting and pattern to increase the healing process.

PLANNING APPROACH

Site axis defined by the north direction, axis toward lake and pedestrian movement.

To implementation biophilic element, the basement provided a central courtyard and void for natural ventilation and natural lighting.

The building compartment is segregate according to space’s activity to allow natural lighting and ventilation between spaces.

The nodes are determined by the axis.

The centre of the building determines by the intersection of the axis to create a focal point of the building.

A water element is injected to the central courtyard to increase the passive cooling strategy at the courtyard.

Slope ramp to allow public access from the existing promenade.

The building is facing the existing view of Putrajaya Lake.

The basement is for the building parking.

The roof of the building follows the shape of the building form.

The building is the place for the elderly to merge with the public and nature element in the process to treat empty nest syndrome in specifically.

S P E C I A L STUDY

CROSS VENTILATION TYPE

COOL AIR

WHY IT IS CHOOSEN? The courtyard is very suitable in almost all building typologies in all the climatic zones due to its passive tendencies for cooling. The courtyard acts as an air funnel discharging indoor air into the sky than the courtyard acts as a suction zone inducing air from its sky opening. Therefore, the courtyard is applied in this building to promote fresh air inside the buildings in order to increase user comforts.

IMPLEMENTATION

The cross ventilation type relies on wind to force fresh exterior air into the building through an inlet. When wind flows into the side of the building, each side of the building is hit with different amounts of pressure. The pressure changes force the air toward the lower pressure side of the building in the attempt to reach equilibrium. Ideally, having an opening on the lower pressure side allows the interior air to circulate out to the side with the lower pressure.

Elderly Playground

COURTYARD AS A PASSIVE COOLING STRATEGY

WATER ELEMENT Water element used for cooling the building using the evaporative process of water inside of the building. CROSS VENTILATION MODE Cross ventilation of natural ventilation is the most effective method to use compared to single side ventilation type.

WATER ELEMENT COMPONENT

The use of a central courtyard is to enhance air circulation through the principle of stack effect which the air moves through buoyancy effect. The courtyard also uses artificial waterfall as a cooling element to the building. WATER ELEMENT DIAGRAM

The plants in the courtyard expelled oxygen for better oxygen supply in the building, provide fresh air and dilutes odours. A courtyard also keeps room for cross-ventilation, which offers the maximum cooling effect.
