Greetings from the GM! I would like to start this by thanking all of you who were able to attend the Special Membership Meeting last month. For those of you unable to attend, thank you for providing your feedback. It was great to see so many gathered to support their Club, and the depth of feeling about Salina Country Club was evident. March was a very active month for the Club. Food and Beverage events were plentiful throughout the month, and we certainly hope that you were able to make it out. April is going to be extremely busy, with action starting to heat up on the golf course and tennis courts as well. Highlights that you should be aware of: •
Easter Brunch on April 1st
•
Ladies Golf Kickoff and Dinner on April 3rd
•
Junior Golf begins April 6th
•
Men’s League begins April 11th
•
Tennis Social begins on April 25th
•
Tuesday Free Ladies Golf Clinics begin on April 10th
Food and Beverage will be continuing with their selection of “Value Nights” and a “Fine Dining” Prix Fixe menu. Stay tuned for the timing of these events. As you can see, there is a little something for everyone at Salina Country Club. Please let us know how we can better enhance your membership experience. Once again, thank you so much for choosing to be a Member of Salina Country Club!
See you at the Club, Brad McMillan
Golf season is upon us! We’re excited about all of the Junior programs to be offered at SCC this year. In addition to our regular summer Junior programs, we will be continuing the success of the SCC Junior Sports Academy. Academy days will be Wednesdays and Thursdays in June and July, and will include golf, tennis, swimming, and lunch. Other Junior programs this season include Rob Carlson’s after school clinics, beginning now and continuing through May. This follows the regular summer SCC Junior Golf program on Wednesday mornings starting in June. Another series of after school clinics will be held in the fall. There are going to be many options and opportunities for fun and learning for the kids this year. Call the Pro Shop for more information on all junior golf programs. Men’s and Women’s Leagues will begin in April and are open to any and all SCC golfing members. Men’s League sign ups will be by team, but if you would like to play and do not have a team, be sure to call the Golf Shop, since we always have teams looking for players. Women’s League will be signed up individually, and the Golf Shop will divide players into teams. We will also be adding specific FREE clinics and competitions every month from April through August. This month we are focusing on putting, making sure everyone is on the right track going into the golf season to eliminate those frustrating 3-putts, and making more putts in general. The clinics will be held on April 7th (yes, Masters Saturday!), the first being from 4:00 pm to 4:30 pm, and the second from 4:30 pm to 5:00 pm. Call the Golf Shop to sign up for one of the two FREE clinics. (You do not have to participate in the clinics in order to participate in the month long competitions.) The Ladies Golf Association will begin their season in April with the annual social on April 3rd, with weekly play starting the following week. Also beginning Tuesday April 10th, and continuing through the season, will be the “Get Golf Ready” clinics for the ladies. All clinics begin at 5:30 pm, and are for everyone from beginners to experienced golfers… and are free! The 2018 Golf Calendar is available on the SCC website, and hard copies are available at the Golf Shop counter. All golf policies and prices for this year are also available on the SCC website. As always, for more information please call the Golf Shop and we’ll be happy to assist. I’m looking forward to a great 2018 season at Salina Country Club! Rob Carlson
The golf season is finally here, even though Mother Nature has not received the memo! The golf course is starting to green up with each small rain, compared to the last two years when our fairways would already be green. This year I feel we actually had a winter and the course is showing it. The fairways are just now starting to show a little green down deep. With some warmer weather they should start popping out of their winter nap. The greens are looking better each day, but they are looking for some warmer weather. The sod project is complete with the exception of some small patch work on #12 and #14. The weather set the progress back a week, but I accounted for an extra week just for that reason. We were able to complete the majority of the work before we hosted the Kansas Wesleyan spring golf tournament. I am very pleased with how the three fairways and the #9 tee box turned out. The roots on that tee box will not limit tee placement or damage the mowers anymore. The next project is cleaning up all the stumps that were ground out. We will pick up all the grindings, fill in with soil and finally sod the areas. The other project will be the fence along Country Club Road. This will not get done all at once, so in between getting the normal course activities such as mowing, raking bunkers and changing cups the fence will be replaced sections at a time. We do plan on getting it done as soon as possible and still provide great playing conditions. This is a busy time regardless of projects, with fertilizing the cool-season grass and mowing on a more consistent schedule. We also will be aerating greens on April 30th and May 1st. The crew and I are excited for the golf season and are excited to get out with the new mowers that we received last month. We have been raking the bunkers with our new mechanical rake and so far have been really pleased with the results. The new bunker rake has even saved us time and can be done faster with better results. I believe once we start using the other new equipment you will be able to tell the difference with the better quality of cut which should equate to a better playing surface. I hope to see you all soon with all the leagues stating this month, it is an exciting time for the club and the golf course. —Chris

Bon Appetit! March was a great month for Food & Beverage. Crab Fest was a great success and we look forward to offering this again next year. Chef Eric’s Tide to Table Oyster Tasting has been enjoyed by all in attendance. Pasta Night made another triumphant return and Johnny’s Up was the place to be for March Madness. Having many different things to offer our members is what makes Salina County Club a fantastic place to be. We are looking forward to continuing to offer new and exciting options for you. Keep an eye on the club calendar for upcoming events and specials. Quick reminder to everyone that Mother’s Day is fast approaching. We will have a splendid Mother’s Day Brunch for all members and their families on May 13th. Make your reservation today and reserve your table. Enjoy the good times! Steven
Administrator Professionals’ Day April 25th Join the SCC for a lunch special to celebrate the hard work of Administrators!
Hello everyone! The warm weather is upon us and spring is my favorite time of year! Keep an eye out for some exciting new produce to be featured in our specials in the Grill Room. Last month was busy with the March Madness crowd coming in to support their favorite teams. Thank you for your patronage—we love the fun atmosphere! My highlight of the month was our first Tide to Table Oyster Tasting. This event focused on the seasonal offerings of oysters from both the east and west coast. For those that attended, they got a briefing on the availability, harvesting techniques, and tasting terminology to compare from all six varieties that were available for the evening. Steven paired the oysters with a sparkling wine that was introduced by our local wine representative. I had a great time and I hope all of you enjoyed it as well. One more highlight for March was Stir Fry Night. This was a new take on our pasta night. We decided to change the ingredients a bit but keep the same format. It was a successful evening. It had a little something for everyone. Men’s League and Ladies Golf will be starting soon, so for all those attending just follow the smell of the grill. I’m sure there will be cold drinks and good food close by. Talk to you soon!
Chef
