I wanted to take this opportunity to bring all of you up to date on a number of different topics affecting your Club. I think that you are going to be very pleased with all of the additions. First, Salina Country Club will be starting a new Club for Kids program beginning on Friday, May 10t h. We will be providing supervised, fun activities for your children, aged 4 – 12 on Friday and Saturday evenings from 5:00 P.M. – 9:00 P.M. The children’s area in the old Johnny’s will be reimagined. Members will be required to stay on property while their children are in the Club for Kids. This program will be on a trial basis with the opportunity for expansion if there is demand from the membership. Reservations are required, with early sign up encouraged. We will be limited to six children and walk ins will be declined if the reservations are fully subscribed. If there is additional demand, we will work to staff the area to allow for additional children. Stay tuned for more detailed information. Second, the “Upper Deck” patio area construction will begin shortly. This will cause some inconvenience while the work is being finished. During the demolition phase, the doors on the East side of the Clubhouse will be closed. Additionally, the Deck itself will be shut down until it is safe to use. We anticipate the work to begin next week, and additional communication will be forthcoming, to give you updates on the process. We are all looking forward to having this work completed; the new space will be a great addition to the Club. Third, I need to announce a change in the hours of operation of the restaurants. Beginning on Sunday, May 5th Johnny’s Up and the Grill Room will close for food service at 5:00 P.M. The Men’s Card Room and Johnny’s down patio will continue to be available for drink service.
I know that the last update is going to be extremely popular! I’m pleased to announce that beginning on Friday, May 3rd and continuing on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the summer we will be providing drink service on the old patio outside of Johnny’s. Hours of operation for the patio will be from 12:00 to 8:00 P.M., but of course we’ll stay later if you’re having fun! We’ve had numerous requests and are happy to have this member favorite staffed again for limited service this summer. Once again, thank you all for being members of Salina Country Club! It’s a very exciting time for our Club and I’m very grateful that you’ve chosen to join us! Brad McMillan 44
May is one of the best golf months of the year at SCC. Not only is it one of the best months for golf weather, the May golf calendar includes fun events for whole family. Here are some of the highlights: May kicks off with Men’s League on the 8th, followed by Beat the Pro’s May 9th. SCC will also be hosting a couple of corporate events during the month of May, they are the Good Samaritan Swing on May 24th and the Community Bankers event on May 29th.
11th and May 25th.
For the ladies, we will continue our Tuesday clinics at 5:30pm each week. The clinics are always fun, casual, and open to all lady SCC members. We will have clinics on Thursday May
Memorial Day we will be having a new event, in terms of the format. This year, we will be starting with a 2-Person Best Ball event. We will have a number of flights including Men’s Gross, Men’s Net, Women’s Gross, Women’s Net, Couples Gross, and Couples Net. Make your own tee times and groups. Sign up for the tournament will be optional as you arrive that day. We will begin taking tee times for Memorial Day on Sunday, May 19th, beginning at 7:00am, and will take them alternately by person and by phone. May 23rd is our Salina Country Club Summer Kick-Off. There will be all kinds of fun activities, contests, food and drinks. Make plans to attend as this will be one of the best events of the year. Here, we will also have schedules and registrations for all of the junior summer activities. The SCC Junior Golf Camp returns by popular demand on May 30th and 31st. Junior camp is for all levels of junior golfers and is a great opportunity for kids to get more one on one instruction. This camp is open to SCC kids ages 5 and up. Sign up in the Pro Shop or call for more details.
On the other hand, Summer Junior Golf schedules and program details are available in the Pro Shop this month as well. The SCC Junior Golf program is open to all SCC juniors ages 5 and up. This year will include thorough instruction on swing, short game and etiquette. Also returning this year is the very successful SCC Summer Junior Sports Academy, an eventful day that includes Golf, Tennis, Swimming and lunch all in one on Wednesdays and Thursdays in June and July. Call us for more details and registration. I am looking forward to a great month of golf at SCC. As always please let me know if there is anything I or my staff can do to help enhance your enjoyment of the club. Rob Carlson

Spring has finally made its appearance and has brought some great days to get on the course. The golf course is greening up including some Bermuda. The trees are coming back to life as well. The rough may take a little bit longer. We have raised the height to allow the grass a chance to survive the summer heat.
Every spring the rough is thick and normally thins out during the hot temperatures. This can cause bare spots. By raising the height, it will allow the grass to fare better this summer. I feel this is the best option to have the best conditions year round and reduce the amount of seeding and disruption of the course when fall rolls around. The fairways are growing in great. We have mowed them down to stimulate growth. The reason we mow the fairways shorter and raise the rough is based on growth habits. The cool-season rough grows in clumps and the warm season fairways, and tees, grow by rhizomes and stolons. The stolons or runners grow above the ground and by mowing lower we allow them to get more sunlight to help them root down. This will help grow more plants and grow more rhizomes that grow under the ground. The rough does not grow in this manner, so mowing them lower only hurts them during the stressful summer months. Once the zoysia really starts growing we will start aerifing them when we have the opportunity. This will especially help the tees so they are a little softer. So far, I am happy with how the course has come out of the long winter. We plan to open the driving range tee when it starts really growing to make sure it can heal properly. There are plans to sod some of the bare areas on the tee. We will move the dividers around the tee box to allow the turf team to sod and not disrupt your practice time. When the driving range tee opens, that will also be the time when we change the cart policy to “in-season and place the gates out to direct you to the fairways. This way we help the rough, so that you are driving mostly in the fairway. I am very excited for this golf season. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know. Thank you. Chris Rice

Happy Sunshine Salina, Summer is right around the corner! The trees are filled with leaves, the flowers are blooming, and baseball has begun! As the seasons change, so do the focuses at the club. As mentioned last month, the pool and Snack Bar have been a major focus. We are excited to announce that the pool will be opening on May 18th with the Snack Bar shortly after. Dive in then, or wait until Summer Kickoff on the 23rd to get your feet wet. We are excited to be celebrating Summer Kickoff with The Astronauts this year! Games and music with drinks and food; why would you start your summer any other way? An advanced congratulations to all of the graduating Seniors from the surrounding high schools. It is a monumental time in your lives. Enjoy every minute of it, or at least celebrate it up at the club! Throughout the month of April, we have been working strongly with some of our beverage partners in order to create an elevated wine list for Johnny’s and The Grill. Bold flavors, pairings, and famous vineyards featured at YOUR club. We will communicate a release date in the next couple weeks, but are excited to build a list accustomed to your feedback and boost your elegant dining experiences. To accompany this, we will also be working out The Grill menu. As we feel confident in our Johnny’s options and execution, we now want to build a more elegant atmosphere in The Grill Room. Thank you for those who attended BINGO and Trivia Night last month. The feedback was fantastic and we are excited to begin hosting them more frequently. Please make your reservations in advance so we can ensure we play in the right space. In addition, our BINGO machine may be the oldest in town, come check out the antiques of SCC! Thank you as always for being such great members! Chris Nickell 8

May is my favorite month!! Mainly because it is my birthday on the 14th!!! I believe a bill is being passed to make it a national holiday. This is a gift we all can enjoy. With that being said I am only excepting the following gifts. (The Die Hard trilogy, only the finest Japanese whisky, dance classes at the community theater, payment to Bob Moeller’s office for my dental implant or a new car…. time for an upgrade.)
Now back to the newsletter. Our next passport dinner, we are going to explore the pantry of Israel. Please be sure to make reservations in advance. Doing so will better prepare the kitchen to meet your expectations and enhance your dining experience. With that being said, I am pleased to inform you that we are planning to have a second run of the France passport series. We had great feedback and I would like to redo the experience for all of those who missed coming out for our creations. I am proud to say, we are exploring the idea of hosting a few charitable dinners in the next six months. One that stands out to me is “No Kid Hungry,” an organization that is a child advocacy to raise money and awareness to aid children that are not getting sufficient meals, food education, good food at school and so on. With your help we can contribute to a forward-thinking campaign. If there is an organization that you are passionate about, please let me know and I would love to collaborate with you and support and assist in fundraising. Lastly, remember we have implemented a daily special on the Johnny’s menu. Please stop in and grab a $2.00 Taco on Tuesdays or enjoy a basket of Fish n’ Chips on Friday paired with one of Chris’s seasonal cocktails or local brews! I look forward to serving you, Chef E
