CHEMICAL TUBULAR FLOW REACTOR

GENERAL Educational and experimental unit representing, in laboratory dimensions, an industrial tubular flow reactor. It has been designed to evaluate the influence of the temperature and of the contact time on a chemical reaction between two components. For an efficient laboratory use, the two components chosen are the acetic ether and a 40% solution of caustic soda. The results of the reaction are different degrees of saponification by varying both the temperature of the reaction and contact time of the two components in the reactor. DESCRIPTION The carrying structure and the main panel are made completely in electro wended stainless steel and it is of bench top design for an easy laboratory use. On the rear side of the unit there are the chemical components tanks having a capacity of 20 litres and the washing thank having a capacity of 10 litres. The drain tank having a capacity of 45 litres is in the lower side of the unit and collects the chemical resultant of the reaction. It can be easily removed for washing and it includes a drain valve. The two chemical components are pumped in the tubular rector by means of two independent high precision electric pumps. Pumps delivery can be adjusted continuously by means of regulation valves and flow rate is directly measured by means of two flow meters with flow conversion curves calibrated for the density of the two chemical components. The tubular reactor, made with a special plastic chemical resistant tube coil, is immersed in a transparent thermostatic bath with an electric heater and a stirrer for a fine temperature regulation of the bath. The coil reactor has a total length of 20 metres and an inside volume of 500 ml. The reaction temperature can be regulated by means of an electronic thermostat up to 80 C째 with a precision of +/- 0, 1 C째 and bath temperature can be set and read by means of a digital thermometer. The two circuits of the chemical components are independent and the mix happens inside the thermostatic bath. A thermometer is mounted to detect the temperature at the reactor discharge. A sampling tube is placed just before the drain to the collecting tank. A third circuit, using the same two pumps of the chemical components, has been provided for washing the reactor after experiments sessions using common water. The result is a chemical reaction inside the tubular flow reactor and the reaction temperature can be regulated by means of the bath thermostat while the contact time is regulated by varying the chemical components flow rate. All the electric switches and controls are in a waterproof control board on a bench side.
