JEFF VICE A PART OF OUR FAMILY We’ve lost a dear friend, Jeff Vice, a dedicated local film critic and heart-driven SLFS advocate. He has been at official SLFS functions and a familiar voice both online and on the radio. Jeff has been an integral and influential part of what we have accomplished. I don’t even think he realized how much his connection to us helped SLFS. He was a judge almost every time at Local Open Screen, he covered all our content, and he has been a part of our family. His humor, spirit and generous nature will be missed. Our hearts go out to his closest friends, his family, and to the entire film community. May everyone who knew Jeff find a moment to remember the best of who he was, which is all I ever saw. With sincerity and loss, Tori Baker, Executive Director, SLFS

TREMENDOUS ADVOCATE FOR SLFS For many years Jeff Vice was a tremendous advocate for Salt Lake Film Society films as a critic at the Deseret News (even when that wasn’t easy). He continued to support our programming, including our summer late night films, on X96 and with his Big Movie Mouthoff and Geek Shows. He was always willing to come be a guest critic at our Local Open Screen Nights for local filmmakers. For a good 8 years or so we saw him at our theatre at press screenings weekly and I enjoyed hearing his witty insights on the latest films. He was always so fun to chat with, but also an incredible ally to have as a colleague. I and SLFS will miss him very much. short films. And I’m always writing screenplays. Some of them we try and get off the ground, others are more of pipe dreams.
How long have you worked at SLFS? I think four years now.
Any projects you are currently working on?
How did you get started here? I got started because I did the Screenwriter’s Program and was involved with that for a year. And when that ended I didn’t want to be done with the Film Society, so I started out just doing the running stuff. Running the errands and that sort of thing for Sundance and the Art House Convergence and all that, and then kind of just slowly worked my way into the rotation.
Personally, at my company, we have two screenplays -- I was a co-writer on both of them -- that we are developing right now and are trying to attach talent and financing to. And then I’ve also worked with another Film Society employee, Conor Long, on a script of his, so that’s cool.
Do you think it’s important for people to appreciate film?
I do think so, I think it’s an awesome medium for understanding different cultures, different viewpoints, and of I have always loved film, I haven’t always studied film course entertainment, but not just entertainment. It’s a tool though, like I got into it. I’ve always loved movies and I’ve for education, like many other art forms. It’s such a versatile always loved storytelling, but I got into theater first and I got tool for the human race. (Laughs) That sounds dramatic! a theater degree and that kind of led me to being more of a What’s your favorite thing about working here? student of film. My favorite thing is still the very first thing that got me How do you like to incorporate film outside of your involved, which is the Screenwriter’s Program. I just love being a part of that community and seeing what other people job? I’m a co-owner of a production company here in Salt Lake are working on. It’s very motivating to me, so that’s my City that does music videos, commercials, industrials, and favorite thing about the Film Society.
SEE THESE WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
Have you always loved film?

What are your hopes for SLFS? I hope it just continues to find new ways to create new programs that reach out to the community. It’s really cool that it can foster a network of film enthusiasts, people who want to talk about cinema, people who want to see different kinds of cinema, people who want to study cinema, or work in cinema. It’s really cool for bringing all of those different people and opinions together.
What is your favorite movie and why? My favorite movie, everyone at the Film Society knows this because it’s the one movie I always recommend at the Tower, is In Bruges, written and directed by Martin McDonagh, who has been one of my favorite playwrights for like a decade now, and he just started moving over into cinema. He did a short film that won the Academy Award for Best Short a couple years ago, and then followed it up with In Bruges, which I just think is a brilliantly tight screenplay, the characters are really cool, the themes are really cool, and it’s like my kind of style.
