W

e are, all of us, defined by our stories. They are the stuff of our empathy, our hope, our ambitions. Our evolution. They give us our consciousness, our soul. We tell these stories, we all do; we all should. And some few can show them, conjure them visually through language, art, and motion. The tools and techniques for doing this are wildly different today than they were twenty years ago, or even ten. And they call for a new kind of artist: the artist entrepreneur, the artist technologist. Salt Lake Film Society’s MAST exists to discover artists, then connect, nurture, and empower them, grow them into techsavvy artist entrepreneurs. These artist entrepreneurs will then be better equipped to create their art from where they are, raising a diaspora of accessible art in every city across the globe. A diverse and democratic art. A free art. This is our dream. This is our mission. And it’s going to be a whole lot of fun. The program is made possible by an endowment from the Robin M. Woods Legacy Fund for Future Initiatives. MAST’s kick-off consists of three contests: The VOICES SEEN contest will focus around animation. Entrants may submit alone, or in groups, a short animated piece highlighting a distinctive visual voice and style, and an aptitude for visual storytelling. The second is PEOPLE OF EARTH, which is a writing and photography contest. Entrants are encouraged to collaborate in pairs, and should submit an original photograph depicting one person, or multiple people, accompanied by an engaging character profile describing the person or people in the photograph. The last is MICRO-DOCS, a documentary contest. Entrants are encouraged to collaborate in groups, but may work alone, in producing micro-documentaries on subjects touching the history, reality, challenges, progress, and solutions to racism and inequality. All submissions must be received before noon MST on 15 February, 2019 and winners will be announced on March 4. All Salt Lake Film Society dates and locations are subject to change.
