NOVEMBER 2018 E X P L O R E T H E C U LT U R E @ S L F S

WHITMAN HOWARD FRONT OF HOUSE STAFF HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKING FOR SLFS? It will be a year on December 19th.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO APPLY? My interest in film had been developing for a good while. I was renting movies from Tower quite often and would pop into a show at Broadway pretty regularly. I think I slowly came to realize that it was the type of environment in which I’d like to participate.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING FOR SLFS? My coworkers! Getting to work somewhere full of people who share similar interests is an absolute blessing, and it has really been wonderful to develop friendships with all the staff.

HOW WOULD YOU SAY FILM IMPACTS YOUR LIFE? I think it gave me a pathway to engaging with art and its effects in the real world, which I likely wouldn’t have found elsewhere. Film enables growth, whether it be social, mental, or intellectual, through beautiful, emotional

synesthesia that I believe only a visual medium such as film can pull off.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OF SLFS. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES? I enjoy pretending to read a lot, and spend a good portion of time simply moving about Salt Lake, discovering and visiting random locations. I also love to just chat with people!

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE OF SLFS? I hope that longevity will play to our advantage. The domineering heavy hand of companies such as Disney, Amazon, or even large movie theaters has pressed arthouse venues into a

tight corner. Much like film, we need a visual presence in order to remain alive, and this may only be done by continued love of independent cinema. We shall not be destroyed (or bought)!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE AND WHY? Jonathan Glazer’s UNDER THE SKIN. Detached, cold, yet golden-hearted, it tells the story of an extra-terrestrial woman’s attempts to destroy and later love humanity. Sadly, her simple physical existence prevents the will to become human, to live truly. A haunting indictment of the treatment and position of women in a callous world.
