AIDAN CROFT FRONT OF HOUSE STAFF HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED FOR SLFS? Getting close to a year and a half now! WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO APPLY? I LOVED visiting the Tower and Broadway Theaters during high school. I remember I saw Ciro Guerra’s Embrace of the Serpent during that time and it blew my mind. I knew I wanted to be involved in the local film scene and expand my knowledge of cinema, so I thought that applying at SLFS would be a great way to start. Unfortunately, I thought I knew a lot more than I did about film and I ended up applying twice and not getting the job. It wasn’t until I applied for the third time during my second year of college that I got an offer. Third time’s the charm I guess. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING FOR SLFS? I think my favorite part of my job is the fact that I have such incredible co-workers. The people I work with here are so unique, talented, have such fascinating interests. I feel so lucky to be able to be surrounded by these people and learn so much from them. The majority of my growth as an artist and general human over the last year and half has been a result of what these wonderful people have taught me. HOW WOULD YOU SAY FILM IMPACTS YOUR LIFE? As an aspiring filmmaker, film impacts nearly every aspect of my life from my career goals, my personal wellness, to my day to day interactions with other people. Film is the fuel of my spirit and every day that goes by where I cannot see a film that is new to me or one that is beloved by me, I really do feel myself fall into a depression. And that sounds all “woo woo” but it’s very true. Film is also the reason I have the friends I have. We’ve bonded over our shared love and common understanding of cinema and the way that it impacts us and inspires us to live the ways we do. TELL US ABOUT YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OF SLFS. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES? Outside of SLFS I’m an avid but amatuer photographer

(follow me at @aidanpowellcroft on Instagram!). I’m very passionate about the protection of our public lands here in Utah, especially the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. I grew up there and whenever I can, I’ll escape the city and get lost in the canyons for awhile. Save the Grand Staircase and Bears Ears National Monuments! I’m also an actor and every now again you might find me in a production around town. This past year I’ve worked a lot with Riot Act Theatre and have been involved in their productions of The Aliens, Mopey Wrecks, and Anatomy of Arithmetic. ARE THERE ANY PROJECTS YOU’RE CURRENTLY WORKING ON YOU’D LIKE TO TALK ABOUT? I’m going to Westminster College for a degree in Theater Arts and this coming spring we will be putting up a production of Shakespeare’s Othello and I will be playing Iago in it. It’s a great show and I’m very excited to attack such a meaty role. I’ve never played a character before that has entire books written about them! I start rehearsing for it in February and the show will be performed in April. So this is plenty of time to mark your calendars for April 4-6 and 11-13 at 7:30 pm! WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE OF SLFS? My largest hope is to continue to push for the Salt Lake Film Society to be as inclusive as possible. We’ve made a lot of progress just in my time here by supplying our customers with many more audio and visual assistance devices. But I feel like we can continue to push towards opening our doors to a much wider audience. Art House Theaters definitely carry a certain attitude with them and unfortunately it can come off as pretentious. I think this

pushes a certain demographic away from coming to our theaters because maybe they do not have the greatest depth of cinematic knowledge or the diction to discuss film the way the majority of our current audiences do. But film is for everyone. It is the human experience under a magnifying glass. Everyone is entitled to experience this and should feel welcomed to do so regardless of one’s ability to discuss a film’s aesthetics or whatever it may be. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FILM YOU’VE SEEN AT SLFS AND WHY IS IT YOUR FAVORITE? My favorite film I’ve seen here is probably Phantom Thread. I’m a HUGE Paul Thomas Anderson fan and having the opportunity to recommend this film to customers was my greatest pleasure. It’s a fascinating film that marks an interesting change in PTA’s career. He’s spent years creating a cinematic history of the stories of California and then all of the sudden he makes this English drama about a clothing designer? WHAT!?! And it’s GORGEOUS. Every frame is a brilliant painting (and PTA was the cinematographer too!!). The film is about love, work, family and the ghosts of all of these and how they impact us and are carried in our lives. All of these themes are so delicately interlaced into this decadent film which also features an INCREDIBLE original score by Jonny Greenwood. I saw this film in theaters over five times and snuck into it to take a peak at it almost every day I worked. Phantom Thread sweeps me away into the best kind of dream that is really only achieved by special, special films. Some other films I loved seeing here were Good Time, Blindspotting, Roma, and Mandy.

EXPLORE SLFS’S NEW PROGRA

SLFS Launches Media Accelerator Studio In pursuit of our vision to inspire artists, achieve high cultural impact, and add to the quality of life in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Film Society announces the creation of MAST, a forward-thinking content development program for postgraduate animators, game designers, and content creators that will harness the power of tech-enabled and animation storytelling. MAST will significantly grow the SLFS Film Fostering & Education Initiative, which has fostered 150 screenwriters, 4 digital directors, and produced cultural film tours. The program is made possible by an endowment from the Robin M. Woods Legacy Fund for Future Initiatives. MAST will offer a fellowship program, on-site and online labs, and contests, alongside mentoring, networking, and collaboration opportunities, empowering artists to create art where they are, and shift Utah and Salt Lake City from exporting artists to exporting art. There will be a special emphasis on supporting artists and projects that highlight diversity and social conscience.
