like for you to join the SLFS family.” And at first I was like, Uh that’s kinda corny, but I really feel that! I really feel that we work with a group of people who really care about one another and really care about art. Humanity and art are the two things I value that most and so being surrounded by people who also feel that way is a really amazing feeling.
ASSISTANT MANAGER, BROADWAY CENTRE How long have you worked here? Since September of last year, so 8 months. What drew you to start working for SLFS? My friend Alyssa [Skinner] used to work here, and she said it was the best job she ever had. So it’s kind of like, “Well why wouldn’t I try and get the best job I’ve ever had”? Have you always loved film? It’s funny to hear you phrase the question as “have you always loved film” because I’ve always loved movies, but I don’t think I had any understanding or appreciation of filmmaking as an art form. So the way that I consumed them and thought about them was very different. And that probably didn’t change until I was in college, but definitely I always felt deeply affected by movies and film and cinema, which I don’t necessarily think are all the same things but (laughs) this is a short interview. Alright, so you’ve just been promoted to assistant manager [she fist pumps]; how has your experience working here been since that change? I think I have a better understanding of the mission of the Film Society and some of the challenges of
working at a non-profit. I have a better appreciation for the administrative difficulties in that regard. But it makes me feel even more excited because I feel like I’m in a position where I can be more influential in making sure everyone is on board and that the execution of that vision is something everyone is on the same page about. I have a bigger role in making that happen. What are some of your hobbies outside of SLFS? Well, I also work at the City Library, which doesn’t count as a hobby, but actually encapsulates a lot of my hobbies (laughs). I watch a lot of television, but not on a television. (Laughs.) I watch a lot of series produced for TV on my computer. I read a lot and enjoy cooking and being outside. But not doing anything outside, just going to place to place not in a car. (Laughs.) What is your favorite aspect of working here? Aw, man! I feel like I can never leave this job for so many reasons. I really love everyone I work with. It’s really nice to not have high turnover so you can really get to know people. When I was offered the job initially, Stephen called me and said, “We’d really
What are your hopes for the future of SLFS? I’d really like to see us continue doing great programming. I’m really excited about the Summer Late Nights series and I think that definitely there is a lot potential for exciting stuff to come. Also increasing our role in the community and doing some advocacy for ourselves. But yeah, advocating and getting a better feel for the niche we can really fill in the community. Last question, what is your favorite movie and why? I could give you like five different answers, but the one that I’m gonna say is The Umbrellas of Cherbourg by Jacques Demy. When I first watched it I did not realize it was an opera, which it is (laughs). But it is really visually perfect. To me it very much feels like an art film. It’s really clear to you as the viewer, that someone had a vision and executed that vision exactly as how they wanted to. The art direction is amazing, the costuming is amazing, the score is amazing, the casting is amazing. And it’s the same way I feel about an Almodovar movie or Days of Heaven, the Terrence Malik movie. You feel like you are pulled into someone else’s vision, and that movie for me does that perfectly. There are other movies that do that too, but this is the one right now.
