FORETASTE You’ve been perfectly wired to bring heaven to earth. Let it sink in. Only you can bring the image of God into a room, the perspective of his heart into a situation, speak supernatural life into a soul – a tree cannot do this, nor can a dog, nor $50 million dollars – only you. Let’s not be distracted by the very environment we’ve been sent to transform. God is the giver of all good things, yet outside of Him they are only as good as dead. Sex, success, style, spirituality, art, and music are beautiful gifts to indulge in, but become corrupted once detached from their life source. As UNCAGED lions, pursue the fresh meat of purpose and passion and ignore the roadkill of perverted pleasures waiting to bait you back into captivity. You have been WIRED TO WIN, but will only be activated by your true source – the very words and spirit of God. The righteous are bold as a lion, let’s roar.

Relentless

The Power You Need to Never Give Up by John Bevere John Bevere wants to take you on a journey to unlock your tenacity. As he recounts the stories of Jesus and John the Baptist, as well as those of many contemporary believers, he presents a powerful pattern: These pillars of faith do not just hang on and survive troubles. They look adversity in the face and stare it down. Armed with the truth in the Word and the power of prayer, you, too, can join the determined ranks of the army of God.

Addicted To Mediocrity

by Franky Schaeffer

In this provocative book, Franky Schaeffer shows how Christians today have sacrificed the artistic prominence they enjoyed for centuries and settled instead for mediocrity. The evidence for this sad state of affairs abounds. We are flooded with “Christian” doodads, trinkets, t-shirts, bumper stickers, etc., that use God’s name as an advertising slogan--”Things Go Better with Jesus”-putting the Creator of the universe on the same level as soda pop! Schaeffer offers not only an unflinching critique, but specific and practical direction for becoming “unaddicted,” and for recovering artistic excellence.

Imagine

A Vision for Christians in the Arts by Steve Turner Imagine art that is risky, complex and subtle! Imagine music, movies, books and paintings of the highest quality! Imagine art that permeates society, challenging conventional thinking and standard morals to their core! Imagine that it is all created by Christians! This is the bold vision of Steve Turner, someone who has worked among artists--many Christian and many not--for three decades. He believes Christians should confront society and the church with the powerful impact art can convey.

IS THERE NOT A CAUSE?

Blood Brother

is an intimate portrait of Rocky Braat, a young man who longed to find a family. Winner of both the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award, the documentary is about the unmistakable power of love, as celebrated in the story of one man’s decision to move to India and restart his life among the children living at an HIV orphanage. Unlike others who simply passed through their lives, Rocky stayed, dedicating himself to their health and well-being. Director Steve Hoover ventured to India to chronicle Rocky’s newfound life in this beautifully crafted person film. All filmmaker profits are being donated to directly benefit the children at the orphanage and other HIV/ AIDS initiatives. www.bloodbrotherfilm.com 23

EX Don’t let it be your first resort

The ultimate award when Christ Jesus is the source of your relationship is that you can always turn to Him for help. He will guide you in His living word (The Bible) and through His Holy Spirit on how to deal with conflicts within your relationship in a godly manner. When I was a sophomore in college I started dating this guy who I thought was “the one”. At the time we both were not seeking Christ Jesus, so dappling in sexual sin was not convicting to us. We were turning to what our flesh knew best; sin. When we argued we really did not talk it out because that would only lead to more dissatisfaction. Instead of talking things out to come to an agreement most of the times we made things up with sex. What seemed to be a simple action became a bad habit. It’s not a healthy route to have make-up sex or any sex for that matter as an option to fix conflicts between you and your boy/girlfriend. Make-up sex creates patches, patches that cover up problems instead of solving them. The more you turn to sex, the less likely the problem will be fixed. Our relationship was centered on self and anything that was pleasing to us was the answer. I encourage you to not let sex be the first thing you turn to when you are frustrated. Let Christ Jesus be the center in every aspect of your life. He is where your fulfillment should come from not self. Now that I am in a healthy relationship I have not had make-up sex with my fiancé when disputing a matter. After having an argument with my fiancé I cannot lure him into bed and say, “Let’s make this up with a little love making,” instead I ask for forgiveness and discuss the issue in love. If the issue at hand is something serious, we go to the Lord in prayer. The next times you are having issues with your boy/girlfriend do not turn to the bedroom but to Christ in prayer and supplications (Philippians 4:6).

X FILES

Testimony Files Words Rondell Mcleod

So tell us some of the story on how the Lord got your attention and brought you to Him. For starters, I was involved in a homosexual relationship. For me, being in this relationship offered many fulfilled desires that pleased the appetite of my flesh, meanwhile my spirit felt far away from me and I lived life without purpose. One day during that 2 year span, I called out to Jesus requesting that He show me that he’s real and if He was—would He still have me like I was. Shortly after I heard a confident voice (that I myself didn’t have at the time) while I was in thought I heard: I love you, I’m here for you, spend one day with me and I will show you that all that I say I am I am, I will bless you and I will show you my love to you. I listened and I followed, long story short that day was the most unforgettable day of my entire life. I received so much favor from people that day, I would find myself in the right places at the right times, I had experienced so much love, so much joy and so much peace that day. I even remember that night I slept so peacefully through the night which was uncommon for me. Honestly, it still took about 5-6 months to finally let go and be free from the relationship, the emotional attachments and all that came with it but ever since, I made it clear that Christ was the way for my life and I could no longer live life without Him. Have you noticed a change in any habits or desires, especially ones that caught you off guard? Of course! I realized that my lustful attraction was traded in for a real God breath brother hood with males of all different backgrounds. I get to share 32

knowledgeable things with them and they share the same with me. Also I didn’t realized how outrageous I dressed as a gay male trying to express my personality and attract a certain group.. but again, that got traded in for a sense of style that now attracts many different people who requested me to style them or a friend of theirs. It funny but this opened my eyes to truly see that ALL THINGS really do belong to God. What are one or two struggles you’re currently wrestling through, and some of the grace and lessons God is showing you in the midst. I have seen time and time again where I would take the back seat because I felt that I was unworthy or that I didn’t look the part. A crowed would be asked to do something I knew I could do with my eyes closed but I would raise my hand or open my mouth because I lacked confidence. I now see that God has and is continuously showing me my value in Him, He is making me strong, brave and confidant in whom I know I was created to be. Yes I may not look like everybody else, talk like them or even speak the way they speak when they are speaking Gods word but I do know that I am the only individual who can portray “that” particular part of God’s unique personality the way that only Rondell can. Are there any new passions or ideas now awakened in you to influence your generation or shape the culture? 100 to the 10th power Yes! His word echoes through the ages but there is always fresh revelation to be received via the Holy Spirit. And we get to demonstrate that through the creative and unique ways we were all designed with. And need I mention, TASTEFUL, His word says “taste and see that the Lord is good,” so if He’s utilizing us to do his will to attract the attention of the blind, bruised and broken then it’s only fair to continually give them a taste of what He can do and has done for us.. a taste of His love, salvation, grace, compassion. WAITING TO

He Is Worth The Wait

The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him Lamentations 3:25

www.saltymagazine.com

Wait. Wait Sister. Wait Brother. Wait. If you peruse a dictionary, you will find the word “wait” means “to look forward expectantly”, “to hold back expectantly”, or “to remain stationary in readiness or expectation”.

The next time you struggle with waiting to

When was the last time our culture urged us to wait? When was the last time our hormones acted as though they heard a word from the Lord? Even if we did wait, what would we be waiting for? The phrase, “He is worth the wait” is catchy, but is the wait truly worth it? Is there hope in waiting?

presence of the Holy Spirit in you.

If you turn on the television or engage in other mediums (or forms) of entertainment, you may notice the world is unashamedly screaming, “There is no need to wait. Take matters into your own hands. Play God. Be God. Try to manipulate God. Force your life to be the way you want it to be. You are not blessed if you are lacking what and whom you want. There is no need to wait. You are waiting in vain.” The Bible, which is the authoritative Word of God, tells us a different story. The overall Biblical narrative and individual stories within the Bible tell us that God calls His people to wait and to wait with expectation. Adam & Eve had to wait. Abraham had to wait. Joseph had to wait. Moses had to wait. David had to wait. The Prophets had to wait. The early church had to wait. The present-day church has to wait. God’s people have to wait on God. While God may elect certain people to wait for specific blessings, the common thread in our waiting is that we all are called to wait on the miraculous work of God, which is the coming of Jesus the Christ; whether it is His first or second coming, we have to wait on God to accomplish His work. Also, we have to wait on the fulfillment of our personal sanctification. We have to wait on the sanctification of others. Waiting is not abnormal to the Christian life; our waiting should glorify God and build up of the body of Christ. As we obediently wait on the Lord, the truth becomes clear: our waiting is not in vain, and it will accomplish the purposes God intended it to accomplish. 35

have sex, hold back expetantly for the return of Christ, and reflect on the fulfilled promise of the John 13:15 − 17

The next time you struggle with waiting for a spouse, look forward expectantly for the return of Christ, and think about the glorious marriage that will take place before God the Father. Revelation 19

The next time the culture urge you to live your best life now, ‘"remain stationary in readiness" for the return of Christ, and think about the best eternal life you will live with Him in the new heaven & earth. Revelation 21 − 22

Do not allow this world to saturate your mind and heart with foolishness. By the power of the Holy Spirit, maintain a patient heart towards God. “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23). Turn to Christ and wait for Him. There is hope in waiting for Him. He is worth the wait and He is patiently waiting for you. Grace & Peace.

As an entrepreneur, what have been your favorite finds or lessons learned regarding: 1. Time? Valuing your time as a function of money. Knowing what you’re worth, what’s worth focusing on, and how you prioritize your time. I now filter my time and commitments by making sure they align to my core values and core competencies. 2. Money? Trusting God with being a good steward with money. Knowing that He will trust me with more when I have earned his trust with little. And desiring to be a bigger and bigger giver—and that I can’t outgive God. 3. Success? Learning executive humility. And how there is strength through weakness when I’m in God’s will. 4. Technology? Let technology aid you, not consume you. 5. Purpose/Passion? Allow yourself to be coached, trained and disciplined in order to get to the next level. Want to climb that mountain in your finances, weight loss, career goals? Get help, and stick to it and through it. As an entrepreneur, what have been your favorite finds or lessons learned regarding: 1. Time? Every second matters. Time management is key, not just in business but in ministry. Being where God wants be to be has brought some of the most unordinary yet AMAZING opportunities and experiences. 2. Money? Tithe faithfully. Sow strategically. Reap beautifully 3. Success? I think the most important part of success is consistency. If you’re consistent in all the right things, good things will come. And vice versa. 4. Technology? Today technology is known as such a distracting and horrific stronghold, at least for the children of God. In my case, I have found technology as an important part of my growth and ministry. Whether on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or Instagram I have been able to find customers and fellowship from people all over the world. 5. Purpose/Passion? “Do what makes you happy.” I heard this so often, mostly from networking in the job market at job fairs. As an engineer, there are so many opportunities to work and impact lives. As a Christian, I had to align my views with God’s views and His passion and do everything I love for the glory of God. I have never been an artist or a designer, but my passion for serving God and my enjoyment of the creative things in life put me right where I am today.

As an entrepreneur, what have been your favorite finds or lessons learned regarding: 1. Time? My father once told me that if you want to know what a person thinks of themselves, look at how they spend their time. A person that doesn’t value themselves will waste their time on everybody and everything. I’ve taken this to heart. When you value who you are and what you do, you will take full advantage of the time God has given you on this earth. To keep myself organized I use an Evernote and an app called Finish. 2. Money? Matthew 25:14-28 lays out a story about a master giving his servants talents and the servants proving if they were good caretakers of what they were given. This is an amazing teaching tool when it comes to money. If you are looking to be successful in life, start with your pockets. With Money Management, the app MINT has helped Girls of Royalty manage our finances and keep things on track. Being that we also have an online store, we use a software called QuickBooks as well to help us manage our day to day operations. It’s a great software application for small businesses. 3. Success? It isn’t yours. It’s God’s. A righteous man understands that it is God that has made Him righteous in the first place. We can’t even earn our own salvation so what makes us think we can earn our own success? Being truly successful is something that happens through the hand of God. You do have to stay motivated. I connected with some amazing networks that keep me going. I’m always on iBloom.co (network for women) and I’m constantly on mashable.com, forbes. com, and my go-to magazines are Inc., Entrepreneur, Fast Company, and Wired. 4. Technology? Stay with the trends & understand what works for your brand. Someone once told me: “Make God seen everywhere”. In building Girls of Royalty, the best decision I made was bringing live streaming online bible study to people’s devices through Google Hangout On Air. We have used this technology to host huge panels, live giveaways, and so many other events without people needing to leave their homes. Google Apps for Business has revolutionized the way businesses can work together. My team consists of 21 women and they are from all over the nation. We have used various Google apps to create a better flow for a team that works primary online. 5. Purpose/Passion? “The things you are passionate about are not random, they are your calling”. This is a quote by Fabienne Fredrickson that I have saved to my phone and computer. If you can’t stop thinking about it and it’s all you talk about and dream about, talk to God and see what He wants you to do. My focus right now for Girls of Royalty is learning how to focus on improving our service to our women. Even though we are a ministry, having a business like mindset is crucial. The Thank You Economy by Guy Vaynerchuk is a great read for anyone trying to create a better experience for their customers.

Barrington As a former top model agent, I know how important it is for a model to share all of his/her personal and intimate details with his/her agent. We know where our models are at any given time of the day, who they are working with, who they are dating, what they like and don’t like, what their plans are for the future, their family, etc. Likewise, so it is with christ my savior. He is my everything! He is the most important agent in my life, and the world; therefore, that’s the reason for the title of my book “The Lord is my agent… and, he only takes 10%”.

on. I have the best agent in the world; He knew how he would fashion me before i was born, he knew how he would make me shine and for all the blessings and successes I’ve received in life, to HIM and HIM alone, I give all the praise, honor and glory to. I was just a model that he used to achieve all that i did, but it was not given to me for selfish gains, but to be a light, to shine brightly, so that the world would know that the greatest agent to ever live and will forever be, is CHRIST JESUS! No one else! I could never walk in his magnificent shoes, but i will forever try to walk in his footsteps - doing the best i can, to let the world know that i’m being managed, taken care of, by the one and only true god.

I am a model of Christ; a creation of god’s divine hands fashioned by his glorious love for me. Each of us has been individually designed by him to serve a purpose, and to shine on whatever stage or cover of magazine (walk in life) that he chooses for us to be

A typical model agency takes 20% of each model’s earnings, but with god, he only asks us to give back 10%, of what he’s given to us. An agent seeks out work for his/her model and demand to get that 20%. christ on the other hand, does the same. He opens

doors of opportunities daily for us, grants us favors and help, even from those we would not expect to, he blesses us with good health and causes us to triumph even in trials, yet we tend to resent giving back a portion (10%), of what he’s blessed us with, even though he was the one who opened the doors and created opportunities for us to receive the gifts and blessings we receive daily. A great agent should love at all times; he/she works hard to be a blessing to his/her talent, but not all agents are trustworthy; some will deceive in order to stay on top! However, christ is the greatest example of a great and powerful agent. He loves at all times, and keeps our secrets, needs, wants and desires, and as a great agent, he puts us in positions daily to impact other lives! He is THE AGENT… and, we are his models - the model for Christ! I’ve worn many professional hats in my life, most notably as an international top model agent, producer and casting director. I’ve booked, produced and casted for just about everyone in the business - from Vogue to L’Oreal, from Target to Levi’s That is my career - one of which i am blessed to be put in that position. I’ve spent much of my life working in an industry enamored with labels, names and personas but it is last on my list of life essentials. I’d prefer that people know of my love for christ, rather than remark on the illusion of who i am. Still, i am humbly grateful for the dimension of my career and the relationships that i’ve cultivated through the years. Contrary to the usual credit given to a strict regiment of hard work and determination (which i did adhere to), my faith in god is actually what motivates me to stay on course. It is the nourishment that feeds my soul. It is this perspective that balances my purpose, talents, vision and interactions with people.

I just got back from Mauritius and La Reunion (in the Indian ocean), then it was on to Paris, then Miami, then New York, and i am currently back in Paris. I travel a lot which is one of the gifts i did ask the Lord - for me to be able to see the four corners of this wonderful world, before i go home to be with him. In the meantime, i continue to produce for international clients, primarily in New York, Miami, Paris, the Caribbean, North Africa and Los Angeles; basically, anywhere the clients sends me. Public service is also a priority, and i host keynote talks with aspiring models and fashion professionals through an organization that i started in 2011. It is called MiFe, Ministry in Fashion and Education, and through it, I educate, but most importantly speak on faith and inform talent of all ages about entering the world of beauty and never losing a sense of purpose and trust in god. If i can positively impact the life outcome of at least one person, then i feel that i am living the life christ died for me. With the release of “The Lord is My Agent… And, He only takes 10%,” I am curating an inspirational tour for summer 2014. I owe my mother for everything; she taught me the importance of being fulfilled, being committed, working hard and dreaming big while giving praise. Jamaica is a wonderful example of the beauty of God’s handiwork and i am proud to be its native son.

The Substance

(what have been some of the challenges & high points of the journey so far): There were so many challenges along the way that is hard to pinpoint one. I came to america with only $56.00 in my pocket, and nowhere to stay. One of my cousins had a family to take me in, which i knew was a divine set-up by god. When i boldly walked away from the industry as a top model agent on February 28th, after i felt in my spirit that it was time and that the lord wanted me to move on. I was a highly paid 6 figure agent, who took a leap of faith and walked away from it all. However, i trusted god, and knew, as my agent, he would never leave me, neither would he ever forsake me. I think losing my dad a few years ago on my birthday might be a setback, but it was a rebirth of the journey god was taking me on, and losing my mom on her birthday recently when she was killed in a car accident, might have been the greatest challenge i faced, but incredibly, i know my parents are ok; they both loved the lord, so i had to keep trusting god that he knew best and not to worry about it, because i will see them again, in his kingdom. To me, these are all teachable moments they are moments when god tests us.

44

Managing super talents across the world i’d ask myself, “who is your agent?” That answer would always come with the cheeky smile “The “rod! The Lord is my agent.” I chose to interpret those challenges as teachable moments, and learned to trust in my faith which provided me with the belief to go beyond the limitations of my mind at that moment. I have seen the world, given a voice to causes, i believe in, such as bringing awareness to female genital mutilation (FGM) with my dear friend and client waris dirie. I’m deeply committed to various causes around HIV and AIDS. Through work with my client, former miss universe Wendy Fitzwilliam, her philanthropic organization, the Hibiscus Foundation and her role as a United Nations Ambassador, I’ve supported children living with AIDS. I’ve also remained involved in promoting the mission of the LIFEBALL event each year in Vienna, Austria, which is supported by notables such as former President Bill Clinton, Sharon Stone, and Eva Langoria. I love opportunities to share knowledge, and served as a mentor for the USA TODAY ‘Dream Job’ program for students, and volunteered as a Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce Mentor. Greater service means greeted progress. I’ve helped countless people reach their dreams. Through this I’ve learned to be a good friend and a student of life. The ability to give back is the highest point of my journey, and self-awareness is priceless.

The Savor (how do you attempt to remain SALTY in your daily commission as salt of the earth): The Lord blesses me continuously, and i offer him praise by demonstrating his teachings in my approach to life. Knowing that there is a greater power, an existence so great that even the smallest morsel of matter is created by him, I am humbled to live on purpose, to speak with intention and to love fervently - authentically. Life is such a precious gift and as salt of the earth i embrace my gifts as well as my challenges with a positive frame of mind. That means never losing faith in the journey, and finding love and compassion in situations within and beyond my human experience. One day, one life. As said in Psalms 34, “taste and see, the goodness of the Lord,” and in Psalms 23, “The LORD is MY Shepherd (Agent)!”

WIRED TO

WIN Words Robyn-Ann Lawson

Humility and ambition are not antonyms. Too many of us come to Christ and think our desire and ability to be great had to be checked at the cross. But to the contrary, we’ve now been called to do works so awe-filled that men see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. Even further, God has now shared His very spirit with us to overcome the oppressive sway of this world and usher in heaven’s principles to earth. This very spirit that leads us into all truth should be used to infiltrate every industry with a Biblical worldview and show God’s great intentions for medicine, law, engineering, art, and entertainment. As redeemed sons being conformed to the Son, you have every right to bear His great image on everything you put our hands to. One of my favorite Scriptural examples of this attitude is Daniel. Instead of leaving his resident Babylonian culture to their own godless devices, Daniel often challenges or infiltrates these idolatrous customs to

45

outperform his peers and direct attention back to the Most High God. In Chapter 2, King Nebuchadnezzar demands the interpretation of his dream – a clear pagan practice – or else all wise men would be killed. Instead of cowering, Daniel ambitiously speaks up and hijacks this opportunity to press into His great God for a great solution to this political issue. Not only does God grant Daniel supernatural understanding and establish Himself as the Lord of mysteries – but Daniel further goes on to accept the promotion to rule the entire province AND request positions for his friends. Now that’s ambition! … and humility – which just means to fully obey and submit to God’s will and commands - nothing more and nothing less. May we realize that all authority in heaven and on earth was purchased by Christ on our behalf so that we would conquer the works of darkness in our culture and win souls to the glory of our Father (Matthew 28:18-20). You’ve been wired with truth for the sacred and the secular, now abide and go lead!

Take Heart Apparel Words Dayra Galarza

Hey Salt shakers! For this months issue we are talking about being uncaged lions and pursuing what God has in store for us with the boldness of a lion! God has given us so many talents and ideas, if we could use the boldness of the same God who has given us all these amazing gifts to share our talents with the world, imagine the difference we could make! That is exactly what one company did. For this month, we are putting the spotlight on an apparel company called “Take Heart. 46

Take Heart is a gospel centered apparel company that makes modern and stylish apparel, and gives 20% of their proceeds to multiple gospel-based charities! For someone like me who loves fashion and is seeking ways to combine the world of fashion and giving together, this company is both brilliant and inspirational. I asked Take Heart a few questions in an interview that I thought really hit the heart of being bold with our talents, plus some extra things about the heart and soul of Take Heart.

www.saltymagazine.com

What sparked the idea of the company? After going on several short term missions trips a few years ago, I was really eager to find ways to give to Speed the Light, an organization that provides missionaries with vehicles. I did a lot of different things to creatively raise funds, like host a concert, a dodgeball tournament, and an N64 tournament, but the thing that stuck was t-shirts. I had a batch of 30 t-shirts made that featured a photo my mom had taken in 1979 in Sweden and the phrase “Take Notice. Take Heart.” and gave $5 from each tee to STL. With the rest, I made more tees and haven’t stopped since! What has been the biggest challenge of creating and upholding the company, and how did you solve this problem? In August, I moved to from New Jersey to Springfield, MO, bringing Take Heart with me. Relocating was really tough because we had been printing the shirts ourselves and had started building a bit of momentum locally. In Springfield, we sort of had to start from the bottom, but it has proven to be more fruitful than I could have imagined. We’ve built an incredibly strong and gifted team here and Springfield has turned out to be a great place for Take Heart Apparel Co. to really flourish. How and where do you find different charities to give to? There are so many out there, how do you sort out the ones you choose to trust and support? We really put a lot of consideration into the charities we partner with. From the start, our primary goal has been supporting missions and seeing the gospel spread. For that reason, we only partner with charities that actively share the gospel. We believe the greatest gift that can be given is the hope of Jesus. Right now, we allow customers to give to Convoy of Hope, Living Water International, Speed the Light, Gospel for Asia’s Bridge of Hope, Ride Nature, and the A21 Campaign. Each of these are really trusted and reputable charities that each take a different approach globally to share the gospel and serve the needs of others. Tell us a few of your favorite life changing stories working with other charities. This is a hard one! Here’s a cool little story- Starting 47

off, we only gave to Speed the Light through purchases. After several months, I had pooled up about $600 and I gave it in a Speed the Light collection at a New Jersey Youth Convention specifically for Convoy of Hope vehicles. Less than a year later, Hurricane Sandy struck the Jersey shore and not only were Convoy of Hope one of the first relief organizations to arrive, but they actually set up and delivered supplies at my home church, where I was volunteering. I was handing food and supplies out of a Convoy of Hope vehicle that Take Heart could have helped to purchase! It was incredible to see the giving come full circle in such an amazing way. How do you come up with the designs for your apparel and what is your personal favorite design and why? Starting off, I made the designs myself, but they really weren’t anything special. I wanted to have shirts that could be worn by anyone and have artwork that was really exceptional. I always joke that the goal in making “cool” things is to “get the people you think are cool to think it’s cool.” We have just about all of our artwork done by our friend in Ft. Myers, Florida, Joshua Noom. He is AMAZING. If you get a chance, check out more of his stuff on instagram-@joshuanoom. It’s all handdrawn, which is a style we’re really into right now. My favorite design is probably our “Live Generously” design. I really love the simplicity of it and the meaning behind it. That phrase “live generously” has been floating around in our heads for a while and we were pumped to put it out on some products. We love the idea of seeing generosity as far more than just giving financially, but really a lifestyle and a way of taking advantage of every opportunity to lift others up. It was heavily influenced by the verse Proverbs 3:27, which drives a lot of what we do. Take Heart shows us that when our talents, dreams, and ambitions are given completely to God, He not only gives us boldness to complete it, but His grace and favor never leave us as well. So if you have an idea or talent, don’t be afraid, be bold and use your creativity for what it’s made to do, spread His light and bring Him glory! Storing Up Trea Words Jason Topps

What could be better than the American Dream? A steady job, money in the bank and a hefty 401(k) for retirement – coupled with a nice house in the ‘burbs, a white-picket fence, two kids and a dog, a swagger wagon for mom and a sedan for dad. Life couldn’t get any better than that, right? Isn’t There More to Life? I mean, do we just go through life trying to reach the next promotion so we can move into a better neighborhood with a better school system so our kids can do better than we have done? I often think about what Jesus might say regarding the American Dream. Would he want everyone to be a homeowner, everyone to have comfort and the security of a nice economy with nothing to worry about? For some reason, I just can’t believe Jesus would encourage us to pursue the American Dream! Maybe I’m wrong – if so please tell me. But here’s why I think this: Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. – Matthew 6:1921 NIV The American Dream seems to be about earthly treasure – not the treasure of the heavenly kind! So here’s the question of the day: “Are you building up earthly treasure, or are you storing up treasures in heaven?”

48

In order to answer that question we need to understand the difference between earthly and heavenly treasure and then we need to look at our own hearts to determine which one we are really living for. The Heart of the Matter This whole issue of heavenly versus earthly treasure really comes down to the heart. In other words, which do you love more – earthly goods or heavenly treasure? Don’t you just love how Jesus always brings things right back to our hearts and challenges us with our idols? Jesus has a way of reaching down to the epicenter of our souls and challenging our framework and then getting us to rethink our framework so that He is the one we are living for! So, let me ask you: Are you constantly worrying about your money? Do you have an unhealthy preoccupation with your net worth, accumulating more wealth, becoming debt-free, investing, making more money, saving more money, or getting the next promotion? Any one of those things can become an earthly treasure. Again, it comes down to what our hearts love more! What is Treasure in Heaven? In Jesus time, the Jews he was speaking to would have been very familiar with the terms “earthly treasure” and “heavenly treasure.” It was common for their vernacular. In fact, the Jews defined storing up treasure in heaven as deeds of mercy and deeds of kindness to people in distress. Jesus, in Luke 12:33-34 NIV, gives us an idea of treasure in heaven when he says: Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure

www.saltymagazine.com

asure In Heaven in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. We see that Jesus equates selling possessions and giving to the needy as treasure in heaven. If I were to define it myself, treasure in heaven would simply be living life with open hearts and open hands. Open hearts means we have a heart that God has – one for the poor, the weak, the disenfranchised, and the marginalized. Open hands means that we live life with a loose grip mentality so that our earthly goods are not used for our own contentment, but rather are used to have an impact on those who are less fortunate for the sake of Jesus Christ. Jesus himself said he had come to: . . . proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free. – Luke 4:18 NIV We store up treasure in heaven by seeking the kingdom of God through helping others, which demonstrates the greatest of all sacrifices that God made for us! How Do We Pursue Treasure in Heaven? So how should we respond to this?

way to deal with this issue correctly and that is a reorientation back to the greatness of the gospel: For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. – 2 Corinthians 8:9 NIV 3. Rearrange Our Priorities Instead of living for six digits, job status, houses, cars, TV’s, vacations, comfort or security – we should be living for the next level of giving, of helping the poor and of using our money for the sake of the gospel! In other words, our priorities should be set on simplification for the kingdom of God, not accumulation for our own earthly kingdom! Here are some practical ways to rearrange priorites and start living for heavenly treasure: • Build generosity into your budget – start budgeting for giving and start looking to give to others and those in need. • Give time and money to local shelters – the Boys and Girls clubs are in desperate need of volunteers to come and spend time with disadvantaged youth. That’s one out of hundreds of organizations that need help. • Have a garage sale or sell stuff on eBay – and give the proceeds away to a hurting family!

1. Repent from Seeking Earthly Treasure We always need to start here any time we see that we’ve been living for something else besides Christ himself. Turn from earthly treasure and turn to God and worship Him. 2. Replace Earthly Treasure Earthly treasure (and our love for it) must be replaced by a deeper love for Jesus. There is only one

49

• Adopt an orphan or become a foster parent – there are so many kids that need good structure and parents who love them. • Think twice – Instead of accepting a promotion based on money think about whether your job will allow you to invest into others.

(tell us a bit about, and your vision to impact culture): What’s good! I’m JT Dillard, a native Houstonian, and I’m passionate about reaching our current generation. My vision for SDRT is to provide a lifestyle brand for believers who want to send a message fashionably. We die to ourselves daily! We’re no longer slaves to sin, hence SATAN DON’T RUN THIS (SDRT)!

The Spark (what inspired your idea or where do you pull your influences): My inspiration sparked from, what I believed to be, an underrepresented fashion genre in the Christian culture. One that appeals to the urban kid that’s rocking a fresh pair of J’s and his favorite NFL team’s snap back. The hard working young man, who’s often judged by the eyes of the world because he’s tatted from head to toe, yet has been transformed by Christ. It’s for the young woman who aspires to rise above her environment, past and strives to be the change in her community. It’s for all that desire to make a declaration that I’m reppin’ Christ to the fullest.

The Substance (what have been some of the challenges & high points of the journey so far): With any start up clothing line, or any endeavor really, there is always great opposition! From naysayers to limited resources, it’s full of its downfalls that lead you to question if it’s all really worth it. At the end of the day, if you’re passionate about something, you have to work at it. Success doesn’t come easy and SDRT is still progressing forward. Honestly, the high points are seeing supporters lookin’ fresh in new apparel because I know it’s a glimpse of light for the next person. That moment someone stops you and asks, “What does SDRT mean?” and just like that, it’s an opportunity to share the gospel while lookin’ dope.

The Savor (how do you attempt to remain SALTY in your daily commission as salt of the earth): Well, just as salt is used to season and to give flavor to bland food, we as followers of Christ are to bring “flavor” to this world that glorifies God. Through our lifestyle, we aren’t necessarily just supposed to lead people to the water (Christ), but in our actions, make them thirst. Show them that they’re in need of the One called 51

www.saltymagazine.com

Jesus. Especially in the black community, Christians are personified as strict, no fun havin’, hymn singing individuals that suck the life out of everything. And Christ if about life and an abundant one at that. We at SDRT can make that appeal through fashion. We strive to remain relevant, fresh and ahead of the curve with new trends.

Summer

Style Tips Summer is here, but it can be tricky to not lose your class in the hot weather. Here are a few tips for us females, so we dress to frame our face and not our bodies: ₀₀

IF wearing skinny jeans, wear a loose top or dress over it. IF wearing a clingy top, wear a loose bottom to balance the look. Form-fitting pants AND a form-fitting top together attracts eyes to follow the full silhouette of your body, and removes focus from your face – where you want people to greet you J

₀₀

Be cautious with low-waist pant or low-cut tops, wear a cami or undershirt to minimize wardrobe malfunctions. Cleavage and crack are unnecessary, and neither should not even be exposed “by mistake” -despite how the world disciples us, we can dress comfortably everyday without having to always adjust pants and shirts every time we sit down and stand up.

₀₀

If wearing bikinis, minimize focus on your on butts and breasts by covering up with light, easy-to-dry clothing such as a breezy wrap skirt, comfy shorts, or loose spaghetti strapped top. Be comfortable, so you can have fun without being self-conscious or flirty.

₀₀

Aim for beautiful, not seductive. Wear a smile and approachable demeanor so you’re always ready to share your salt.

SALTY BITE

Less is not

More Words Tiffany Thompson

The concept of beauty has been redefined throughout the years and reduced to merely textures of fabrics and lengths of dresses. As followers of Christ, we have been constantly told that we are born to stand out, a chosen generation. Nonetheless, how many times have you seen a group of Christians and quickly merged them with the rest of the world based on their attire? For years I have struggled with the issue of dress code within the church community. Like many young Christians, I grew up under strict rules that instilled principles of how to “look like a Christian.” While some people may gladly adhere to these guidelines, there are exceptions that can be classified as “fashionistas” who struggle with it. You see, the real debate lies within the question of how to create a modest dress code while still maintaining a trendy and stylish appearance. The fact of the matter is, as followers of Christ, we must take a firm stand in our beliefs. There is no use in trying to blend in with a world that is only concerned with fleshly desires and manmade validation. “For you have been bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.” [1 Corinthians 6:20] Everything you do should be a reflection of your Creator. In the same way that we strive to live holy lives in the way that we speak, the people we surround ourselves with as well as the places we go to, we should also place emphasis on the way we adorn ourselves. 54

Dressing modestly has been mistakenly intertwined with a lack of effort and care in self presentation. In contrast, it should be seen as carefully taking the time to portray oneself with dignity and grace which is the ultimate representation of Christ. The way you dress should be associated with restoring souls rather than revealing skin. It is vital that we recognize the responsibility that comes with Christianity. The way we dress should be a means of glorifying God and showing others that they too can be restored and made new. I know the society has a different outlook as your own peers, the media and pretty much every store window at the mall lives for the message of less being more. Nonetheless, shorter skirts will only equal to more shallow compliments and tighter blouses will gain you a few more lustful stares from people with no real substance. You are worth far more than that. In today’s culture, it is a great challenge to ignore the many creative outlets that fashion has cultivated. Style is one of the most effortless displays of self expression. While we have the benefit of freedom within Christ, let us be mindful that we should use that freedom to boldly represent our Master in the best way possible. A simple question to ask yourself before you leave the house is: “Would I wear this to meet God?” It will undoubtedly keep you in check!

When I was a child my mother wouldn’t let me play video games like all the other kids. She always told me that my mind has the most amazing dreams and visions. She would buy old raggedy clothes from salvation army and tell us to put on a play. I guess our creative minds were at work when we were young. Brunch with Lisa McClendon 75

Robyn: So saltshakers, right now I am sitting down with Lisa McClendon over breakfast to get the long overdue scoop. (chuckle) Lisa: I love saltshakers, that is amazing! Robyn: Yes, spread the salt! So the last album came out a few years back and people have been waiting but for those who know, you do a lot, and are a busy woman focusing on motherhood, music, and ministry; music being just one of many things. But for those who don’t know Lisa outside of the music, tell us who is Lisa McClendon? Lisa: Well I am very multifaceted. And I’m learning to even hone that in. Because I am a very creative person and for people that are creative, everything is art. Every move, every blow of the wind, every conversation, every dish.. to the point where I have to learn to shut things off. So I’m very creative which can be a blessing and a curse if I don’t learn to balance, you know. So with that creativity, in addition to being a wife and a mom, I am an advocate for youth, I’m a youth pastor and an advocate for girls in particular. I have a girls organization called Girls Life with Lisa McClendon. So I’m an advocate for justice. I just want things to be right - whether that’s through my music, through speaking, or pastoring. Robyn: Right. When I found out I was like whoa you are working. Lisa: Girl yes, so heavily in the ministry and also empowering women, so I’m learning to know who to be in what season.

Robyn: Right, that is crucial. I remember catching a blog of yours where you mentioned a sermon your husband gave that helped you get a revelation on the difference between your talents and your ministry. Lisa: Oh yea. Robyn: And you were saying how that really helped free you to get back to music – were you referring to the commercial side of music, or… Lisa: Yes, commercially. I have a heart to be right, even when I’m not. So I think I read online where someone was bashing artists that were singing and getting paid for it. So then, it kind of hit me and I was like ”Well, God, am I wrong for receiving compensation for singing?” And I wrestled with that for weeks and in my innocence started thinking, well I’m not going to sing if people have to pay for it - because I felt horrible since I love to sing but it is my livelihood as well. Then my husband came to me one day - he was actually about to preach - and right before he preached he said, “There is a difference between your gifts and your talents. You may go into ministry and you may sing, and they pay you for singing but when you shift into the prophetic, or when you shift into evangelism, into ministry - there is no price tag you can put on the ministry side of the music but they can compensate you for the talent,” and that freed me and I was like “Give me a mic!” Robyn: Yes, Let me sing! Lisa: Yes let me sing! So I was happy because He freed me; I missed singing. I was like if I’m not going to be able to sing without charging anyone, I would rather not sing. And it freed me, because my husband didn’t even know in private that I was praying for freedom about that. Robyn: And even in the Scriptures, He says don’t muzzle the ox. If the ox is helping you work, you are able to live off of that you know. Lisa: Yes it sure is, that’s Scripture. Repenting to Win

Words Robyn-Ann Lawson

The Gospel is only as good as God is good. The moment we begin relying on our good efforts rather than God’s finished work, the Gospel loses its relevance and value. Even after being justified, we retain the joy of our salvation by continuing to practice the repentance and faith in Christ alone that redeemed us in the first place. It is the power of Christ that saves us, and the power of Christ that keeps us saved – what an enduring Gospel! Sin and self-righteousness must be continually warred against as the enemy of our souls – whether big or small; let’s not settle for conquering “big sins” then accepting “small sins” as okay before God, because our good deeds now outweigh the bad. Decide in advance to never agree with your sin or struggle, but to side with God about your sinfulness and receive His grace and His pruning daily. As Paul patterns in 2 Corinthians 12:9, boast in your weakness “so that the power of Christ may rest upon you”. If offended or found in conflict with His Word, conclude that God has a standard and you are not it. Quickly ask for humility and the revelation to grasp His mercy and wisdom in every situation – in suffering and in rejoicing, in the routine and in the adventurous, in His commands and in His silence. Meditate on His right-ness (righteousness) and take comfort in the reality that God alone is good and wise. Do not be conformed to the prideful thinking of this world, “but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2).

78

www.saltymagazine.com

Even now, for many “in the church”, God is becoming increasingly unreasonable the more they learn about Him. As Matt Chandler mentions in his book The Explicit Gospel, our culture has been successful in convincing the majority that “it’s we who are good, and God who is fallen”. Angry, murderous, anti-women’s rights, demanding, distant and irrational – they are convinced this is a God who made up an impossible standard and now wants to shove perfectly “good” people in hell for not meeting it. So even though many hear (and even respond to) a gospel preaching, they don’t really feel it’s good news – just better, maybe, than all the bad news out there. At least this offer promises a ticket out of eternal misery to go spend time with a stiff and boring God, if we choose to give up all our fun on the earth right now. What a deal! Most will not confess this, but demonstrate their true belief by the apathetic and lukewarm regard they now have for their faith. The Gospel is now repetitive, worship only emotional, reading the Bible brings no benefit and prayer proves purposeless. The reality is, God was not received as “Good” in the first place – just convenient. Many times, a deal was only made that they thought would lead to self-improvement and bartering for benefits – but the kingdom of God is not a democracy! There is one King and one Lord, whose government shall reign forever in holiness and excellence. Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord of all – abandon your defense now and receive His sacrifice for your sins. All who go before His Supreme Court without the Advocate will be proven foolish and guilty (John 14:6). Saints, let’s guard our hearts from this great falling away! I am praying that by grace Psalm 119 truly becomes our anthem, and that we can exclaim with the author in verse 68: “Father you are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees.” Disciples, fight to retain the sweetness of the Gospel that was “preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast” (1 Corinthians 15:1-2). Taste and see that the Lord is good… then keep drinking!

The Substance

(what have been some of the challenges & high points of the journey):

I am a Christian Pop singer and songwriter. I make music that you can dance to and sing along with, that has a Christ centered message. I plan to impact the culture by making great quality music that’s just as fun and cool as stuff on the radio, and also living the things I sing about.

One of the challenges I face is expanding. I want to reach more people with my music. I literally meet new fans at every concert, people that would have not heard of me if I had not come there so it’s a one step at a time process.

The Spill (what projects are you planning to serve up

this season): I just released my sophomore album “Forever After.” It’s in Christian book stores and online everywhere. I based the album on Revelation chapter 21, which speaks about eternity and what we can look forward to.

The Spark (what inspired your idea or where do you pull your inspirations): I always pull from my personal experiences and what is going on in my life at the time I’m writing. I love to have an emotional connection with my music and the best way to do that is to be honest, and look inside myself and then write. 81

ife is a Crash Course Words Vicki S. Joseph

www.saltymagazine.com

Wearing a cap and gown and walking across a stage is an overwhelming feeling. It is surreal! Those late night cramming sessions, unrealistic deadlines, brutal homework assignments and of course those close calls, that were equivalent to Indiana Jones sliding through an exit. All the hard work has paid off. Let the celebration begin. As the confetti settles, many graduates are hit with the plaguing question... what is next? Many of us do not have the answer to that question. Why? Well, because life happens! You cannot trouble shoot for a life threatening illness or refresh a page to bring back a loved one or add a filter to change an unforeseen accident. After graduation, we thought we had it all figured out, but guess what? We become students all over again, fresh meat. We dive head first into a crash course called life and the truth is we will always be fresh meat, susceptible to many influences around us but we must stay the course. In this grand classroom, Christ sits as the teacher. The bible is our textbook. Discovering your purpose can be daunting. However, when we graduate in Christ’s classroom, we go from glory to glory. Cliff Notes: 1. Here we thought, the degree would make us successful, maybe a boyfriend would remove our loneliness, a wife would validate us, a house would secure us, or more money in the bank would make us content. Why are many of us still miserable, internally unfulfilled and stuck chasing after the wind (Ecclesiastes 1:14). Something or someone will not fill an internal void that only God can fill. The thirst is real and only God is equipped to quench our thirst for

83

more (John 4:14). An authentic relationship with Christ will not remove issues from our life, but what it will do is keep us anchored in the truth of God’s word. We are in this world and not of it. Our focus should be eternal not temporal. 2. Sometimes the pain hurts so much that you can’t see the glass half full, there isn’t a silver lining and you may not want to pick up your bible, because you’re devastated and heartbroken. Stay where you are, Jesus will meet you. He is close to the broken hearted, and those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). I can’t say because you love Jesus you will not go through tragedy. Job gives a brutally honest, transparent and gut wrenching, recollection of his painful transition experience. All of which he shared his authentic feelings to God. You can too! It will not be a drive thru breakthrough, it may take a life time, but God is with you. He will never leave you or forsake you (Deut. 31:6). Be honest with Him, share your pain with Him and allow Him to comfort you and carry you with His grace. 3. God’s classroom can be difficult but we have a great cloud of witnesses cheering us on, the Holy Spirit is our guidance counselor and Christ is our Teacher. The beauty of our God is that He became flesh. Our teacher can relate to our afflictions because He lived it and then He died on the cross to give us life! One day we will have our final graduation. Wearing a white cap and gown without blemish, our names will be called from the Lambs Book of Life and we will receive our final degree, The Crown of Life (James 1:12) and He will tell us well done good and faithful servant. Keep the Faith!

One of the influences I want to have on the culture is leading by example. I am very intentional about serving family; my wife and baby. Spiritual development is priority and the foundation to everything. The local community and the church are where I envision having the most impact.

The Substance

I do not deserve followers; it’s an honor to be where I am. I always want more than I should. The Lord gave me a gift and I am responsible for stewarding that gift and talent accordingly. I Am Human Nothing Human Can Be Alien To Me Words Carine Normil

86

www.saltymagazine.com

The Roman playwright, Terrence is quoted saying “Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto” in English meaning “I am a human being; nothing human

can be alien to me.” Often times we are surprised by the behaviors of others who hurt us, the people around us or our friends and family. We are shaken by the extreme levels of atrocities around the world and injustices in our backyard. This shock leads to a feeling of helplessness and further leads us to seek redress for our pain and anger through revenge. Nonetheless, the Romans 12:19 mentions over and over again that vengeance is God’s and none other. The Lord even commands you to cater to your enemies. It is almost like your mom forcing you to invite bullies to your birthday party; no one wants to do it but it is not about choice, it is about obedience, forgiveness and love. By inviting those bullies to your party, you are extending a bridge that surpasses your understanding. You may not know the impact that your extension of grace and gratitude will have on their hearts. It may not be an instantaneous change and they may continue to persecute -- but your extension of grace will be remembered as a good deed. Romans 12:21 states “Do not be overcome by evil,

but overcome evil with good.” Resurfacing the above quote from Terrence, which expressed that nothing human can be alien to me (because we are all human); this quote truly speaks to the human capacity to do great good as well as great evil. Thus when we focus on the positive we will do positive work. Likewise when we focus on God’s Love we will love like He loves. Truly unconditional love is alien to the world; the profound grace and forgiveness that we have received from God is indeed alien and it will shock our enemies but it is also there to shake up our lives. The unfathomable grace that we have received is truly something to revel in and to share with those that have yet to give their life over to God. John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. God’s promise is for you to live life with His peace, His joy and His fullness – not constantly reacting to the ups and downs of others. Do not let the enemy steal, what God has given you. Thankfully, the Lord’s joy and peace is an infinite resource, so that we may lift our troubles to Him whenever and wherever.

(tell us a bit about you, and your vision to impact culture): Hi we are Social Club, We are two Misfits who love Jesus, and our goal is to help other misfits. What is a misfit you ask? Well it’s someone who doesn’t fit in. One who is considered to be disturbingly different from others. Those are the ones we are here to help. We love them.

The Spill

(what projects are you planning to serve up this season): We just released misfits 2 available everywhere digitally. We have so much ridiculous stuff coming out and we don’t want to announce anything just yet. You know like a ninja. Hehe

The Spark

(what inspired your idea or where do you pull your inspirations): It’s weird, we just do things we like. We always said we don’t want to follow trends, we want to set them. Like our latest album “Misfits 2” we had a pug on the cover. We just like pugs, it wasn’t intentional like we wanted to make people talk about it, we didn’t care. We just wanted a pug on the cover. God gave you a brain, use it. It’s fun.

The Substance

(what have been some of the challenges & high points of the journey): Challenges have been touring, it’s hard to leave family, miss birthdays to perform at a venue. We’re really family focused. The next challenge that no one tells you about it, how the busier that you get the less time you have for God. We literally 89

have to plan out time for God, we thought it would be easier it’s not. Our motto is “if you’re too busy to pray, you’re too busy.” We wouldn’t trade it for the world, we get to fulfill the God has on our life, it’s just in the process you gotta adjust too. The high points are always seeing lives altered. An atheist in Louisville was changed by one of my performances. Man seeing people come to the Lord through the Gospel never gets old.

The Savor

(how do you aim to remain SALTY in your daily commission as salt of the earth): Staying connected to local church. In the process of making music, touring, interviews, meetings, we intentionally make time to do 3 things. 1. Stay plugged into a local church community, 2. make time to invest into people. We are beyond blessed to see 1000s of misfits weekly, but the biggest impact we have comes from the day to day friends and family we do life with. Who’s keeping you accountable? Who are you leading? 3. Leading these misfits, we want to create a culture of freedom. We encourage people to be who God says they should be, instead of what the world says they should be.

Is Your

Faith ? d o G o t g n Pleasi Words Quashana Henry

As humans, we have faith in so many things. We have faith in our intellect, abilities, cars, household appliances, family, friends; the list can go on and on. Lately I have come to find that it is not necessarily that people lack faith, however, the question as a follower of Christ is, do we believe in the right things and does that hope please our Lord and Savior.

90

www.saltymagazine.com

Recently in conversations, I keep hearing of what I would like to call the genie faith; you know, asking God for something and then waiting until He answers before giving Him glory and believing in Him. Is that faith that pleases the Lord? Of course not, according to Hebrews 11:1, faith is not seen. After asking God for something, is your faith shaken? Hebrews 11: 13 says that so many saints died in faith, not having received the things promised to them. Are we willing to die with unwavering faith, even if the Lord never gives us the things we ask Him for? Could we lack belief because we are not practicing Romans 10:17 which states “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ?” Are we listening to what God is saying? Are we reading His word and allowing Him to write it on our hearts? If not, how can we know what He expects from us? How can we please Him if we are unfamiliar with what that looks like? Is our hope limited because we are not applying James 2:14-24 which explains that faith without works is dead? Seriously! Evaluate where your heart lies with faith unto the Lord. James 2:19 says “You believe that God is one: you do well. Even the demons believe –and shudder!” We do not want our faith to be equivalent to that of a demon. How can we ensure that our faith pleases God? Trust him. God did not call us to trust in our mind, will, and emotions but to believe in Him. Sometimes past experiences and fear cloud our ability to hear, see, and believe in the Lord. Try putting your faith into action. Live a life of worship; one that screams, “I love Jesus,” without you having to say a word.

your vision to impact culture):

Creating a project takes bucket loads of patience. Of course it would be the one thing that was never my strongest point, but God is funny that way. He has grown trust in me for Himself through this amazing process. One of the best things about creating the EP was all the traveling and the new friendships that came from it all. Vegas, Cali, and Florida. I’ve never been anywhere really, so getting to travel so much in such a short period of time was a blast. I definitely love the people I’ve grown to know.

I started as a worship leader in my youth group and now I create a very diverse style of music. I like heavy beats, rapping, then there’s the singing, and pulling out my guitar for an acoustic sesh every now and again. My plan is to make music that virtually anyone can enjoy with a message that everyone needs. Something about music knocks the down the walls in a person’s heart. People love and trust music. So when they listen, they’ll entertain ideas they might not usually.

The Spill (what projects are you planning to serve up this season): My debut EP ‘Stix and Stones’ will be arriving July 29th on Infiltrate Music! I wrote 90% of it myself so its close to my heart. I have the amazingly talented 808xELiTE (who has produced for awesome artists like Lecrae, Andy Mineo, etc) on the production side, and there is only 1 feature but it is Thi’sl so you know it’s hard. I’m really excited for people to hear it!

The Spark (what inspired your idea or where do you pull your inspirations): Life. Just living life, winning, losing, failing, and learning is the best way to create lyrics and melodies. This EP only has 6 songs (and a remix by HXLY KXSS) - I definitely have plenty more experiences I’ve written about that I’m ready to share with the world. I just want to make music that’s relatable so life experience is the best to pull from.

The Substance

The Savor (how do you aim to remain SALTY in your daily commission as salt of the earth): Community, staying in God’s Word, and prayer are the keys to remaining salty. Life is rough. You want to isolate and keep your issues to yourself but Christ set up the community of the church to build each other up and hold one another accountable. Genuine community is one of the hardest things for Christians to remain apart of- but its crucial. Also, I just want to make sure the reason I started music remains, at the base line, a ministry. Entertaining is fun but I know why I write and I don’t want anything to change that.

Christ has completely paid for liberties and full access to His Father, yet we allow the enemy and complacency to rob us of enjoying those freedoms daily. Peace, contentment, provision, and answered prayer are yours in Christ - why settle for less? Let’s get serious with our inheritance and start demanding what He paid for - daily.
