WHAT’S YOUR TERRAIN?

Camping Types and Styles

CAMPING

pastime among

is a favorite many outdoor enthusiasts that are looking for nature’s raw beauty There is no other feeling like that of a cool autumn breeze that greets you as soon as you emerge from your shelter after a good night’s sleep; the feeling you get when you have spent all day fishing in the lake and you ’ ve finally caught your dinner Whether you are in the mood for luxury camping or primitive, a solo trip or one filled with the familiarities of your family, we all have a camping “type ”

Do you prefer peace and quiet, with zero camping neighbors, and no service on any of your devices? Or, are you more apt to choose a camping trip that includes air conditioning and a working toilet? Find your camping style here, and you’ll soon be on your way to having the time of your life in the simplest of places From being on the road, to being in your tent, these camping styles will help determine which terrain is right for you

The first of the camping styles is the most simplistic This is primitive camping; good, old fashioned wilderness at its finest Also known as backpacking, this type of camping requires little to no equipment, and anything you bring with you must be carried on your person Most backpackers or primitive campers will purchase a lightweight pack, and fill it with lightweight materials These campers will bring one or two outfits, and wash them as they move through the woods, depending on how long their trip is going to be.

Most primitive campers plan to backpack through miles of wilderness, so these camping trips will last anywhere from 72 hours to several weeks Because of the lengthy time spent in the wilderness, these campers rely a lot on their skillset to live off the land From knowing what plants are safe to eat, to fishing and/or hunting for their own protein sources, primitive campers very rarely bring prepackaged foods along with them Of course, you want to make sure that you have a few nutrition bars with you, some coffee or tea, a water filter, and a Firestarter kit Tools are the most important thing to have in your pack if you ’ re planning to do some primitive camping, with a good knife being the star of the show

Primitive campers often choose rough terrain to backpack through Expect boulders, steep cliffs, rocky hillsides, extreme weather conditions, and being without most of the comforts of home, such as toilet paper and clean socks Primitive campers take their hobby very seriously, so they research the land extensively before just diving in If you are a primitive camper, then you know to always carry a compass and a laminated hardcopy of a map of the area If you ’ re a beginner to the camping realm, primitive camping should not be the first style you try out Instead, opt for an easier trip with much more user-friendly terrain, such as our next camping type: convenience camping

Convenience camping, or campground camping, is the most popular type, and it is what we ’ re all used to This is the type of camping that is usually done in established parks that offer amenities, such as restrooms and shower facilities, electricity and charging stations, firepits, grills, and more Rangers regularly monitor these parks to ensure that the wildlife surrounding the campground is not disturbed, as well as the campers themselves Rules apply to all campers who enter these parks There are usually fees and permits that are required to camp in these places, so be sure to plan for this

Convenience camping means that you receive most of the comforts of home, so you ’ re free to enjoy nature without having to adapt to its sometimes-harsh conditions Being that this type of camping is mostly done in established parks, the terrain is easy, but can be difficult is some of the more primitive sites The added benefit of having security makes convenience camping ideal for families with young children Most of these parks will ask that you reserve your camping space ahead of time, as these campsites can reach their capacity quickly Certain parks may even offer cabin rentals, which is a step above the regular camping trip, bringing us to resort camping

“Convenience camping, or campground camping, is the most popular type.”

Resort camping is informally referred to as “glamping ” While there are many styles of resort camping in general, most experienced campers will argue that sleeping in anything other than a sleeping bag inside of a tent outside is “glamping ” Resort camping is defined as doing away with the tent and the mosquito nets, and opting for a fully-functioning cabin or cottage in the backcountry Some resorts offer all the comforts of a 5-star luxury retreat, such as gourmet meals, gui ded excursions, plush towels, an outdoor spa, and more

Resort camping doesn’t have to be luxurious It can simply mean having

the comfort of a toilet and four walls

However, most resorts offer additional amenities, such as day trips, nightly events, and community gatherings, which makes this type of camping seem far more advanced than the traditional styles, like primitive and convenience camping

Whether you are reserving a luxury cottage with a private chef, or just booking a stay in a simple backcountry cabin, resort camping is among the more costly of styles Because of this, the terrain is usually as easy as it gets, with most of the resort being on paved, level ground Guided horseback riding lessons through the mountains will be as rough as it gets

These types of resorts can get quite expensive, and are recommended for couples and adults only Resort camping gives you the opportunity to enjoy yourself, without having to worry about setting up camp, breaking it down, keeping your space clean, and fending off animals Resort camping is for those who enjoy observing nature in smaller doses and love having all the comforts they know close by

Mobile camping is our last camping camping means that you ’ re in an RV or some sort of vehicle that will g from campsite to campsite Most m campers will travel to several ca grounds during their trip, usually ov a span of several states Cross-cou campers lean more toward RVs fo type of camping, because it is more venient to have a “home on wheels, tha n just a carload of stuff Shorter cross-country primitive campers m car, being that they can take a muc along with them, and then leave the eral weeks while they explore an a

Local campers may choose an ATV ilar to convenience camping, mobile lows you to take more stuff with y

more comfortable trip Having an ATV with you when convenience camping means that you’ll also be able to explore the land further than the other campers Be sure to bring a map with you before you go riding off into the unknown, and always check with the park to make sure that they allow ATVs within the campgrounds Most parks do allow these types of vehicles inside the park, but certain areas may not, due to endangered wildlife or a lack of established trails Mobile eral can be done on a variety of terrain, oads to dangerous hillsides Depending ur vehicle of choice is, you could be enn air-conditioned ride, or bouncing on a backwoods trail

camping inspires travelers to hit the road ll tank of gas and a heart full of ambition bile campers choose this style because of o explore miles and miles of land Mobile an RV is perfect for all ages, because having athroom, and sleeping quarters inside, all fortable long-distance trip

u ’ re a primitive camper with a lightweight knowledge of the wilderness, or a resort hatprefers luxury in nature, there is a campe that everyone fits into What’s your ter-

MAN Building the ULTIMATE

A MAN CAVE

is every guy ’ s safe place It’s the one room in the house (or garage, or shed, or wherever!) that he can call his own No kids are allowed in, and no wife wants to enter But a man cave shouldn’t just be about personal space It should display all the things that make you who you are, from old trophies, to posters of your favorite ball players This space isn’t about mastering feng shui, or matching the carpet with the throw pillows – forget that!

There are a few questions that need answering when it comes to building the ultimate man cave: What’s the theme? What’s the point? Are you happy? Once you ’ ve addressed these factors and finished building, your man cave will have all the guys hanging their heads over their beers with envy

The theme is important, more so if your man cave happens to be a room in the house You’ll need a specific reason to have your own room – single guys, just trust us, when you ’ re married, you’ll need a legitimate reason Sports fan? Avid Hunter? Great! Bring home trophies, lots and lots of trophies! The rest of your family may not want your kills hanging on the wall in the living room, thus forcing you to take your memorabilia elsewhere Let this happen, it’s a prime excuse to have your own designated space You’ve found your theme, and now you can begin building

CAVE

Most designers will tell you that too much of one thing can be a bad thing This is not the case when it comes to a man cave If you have a bunch of antlers that you ’ re proud of, hang ‘ em up! Put that signed jersey in a frame and slap it on the wall, next to your million-and-one newspaper clippings of the team’s highlights throughout the years. It is important that everything you ’ ve collected is displayed, lest it be boxed up and labeled as “get rid of it, honey ”

“Most designers will tell you that too much of one thing can be a bad thing. This is not the case when it comes to a man cave.”

Themes also make people happy They know it’s your man cave, they expect to see things you like in there Having fluidity throughout the space gives visitors the illusion that the room serves a purpose, which makes the room acceptable to those who may have initially disapproved If you don’t plan on having any visitors in your man cave (highly unlikely), then ignore this – throw everything everywhere and have a blast!

What’s the point in having a man cave if you ’ re not going to spend time in it? Whether we like to spend our Saturdays cleaning the house or not, we can all agree that it feels so good to sit on the couch in a clean space that smells nice

and doesn’t give us the creepy-crawly, “maybe I’m on an episode of Hoarders” feeling

Therefore, keep it liveable! You’ll be spending time in it, most likely with your friends, so make sure there is plenty of seating available, and that the guys aren’t walking smack-dab into that old sock smell There also needs to be plenty of things to do A big television is a given (get one now if you haven’t already), but extra games are good to have on hand, such as a pool or foosball table, and a dart board A game table for poker and card games in general is also a must-have item No more hosting poker night at the kitchen table and being yelled at every ten minutes for not using a coaster

“You need a TV, some kickass gaming systems, comfy seats, a killer sound system, and plenty of snacks...”

If your man cave is more internally focused, then make sure you ’ re including things that serve a purpose for you If your man cave is your garage, you’ll need ample workspace for tackling projects and lifting weights, and striking manly poses while no one ’ s watching! A good amount of shelving for tools and accessories is a must Storage is key Without storage, you have clutter, and with clutter, no purpose

The point of having a man cave is to spend hours on end in it, enjoying the little things, so keep it stocked! Snacks and beer (preferably a kegerator) are imperative, especially if you ’ re in need of some serious peace and quiet Which brings up the next necessity: soundproofing When you and the guys are watching the game, you won’t want to have to turn it down for any reason, so make sure you ’ re soundproofing the room and insulating the space well, especially if you ’ re in the garage Any “outdoor” man caves should be prepped according to weather conditions, otherwise you run the risk of having all of your things ruined

A man cave is meant to make you happy You can go there when no one else wants to watch the golf tournament that

you ’ ve been dying to see You can kick back and relax in that recliner that your wife has been threatening to throw out for years until you moved it out of her sight You’re able to crank up your stereo and listen to your favorite tunes while staining that bookshelf you ’ ve been meaning to finish for months

If the space doesn’t make you happy, then it’s not a true man cave You need a TV, some kickass gaming systems, comfy seats, a killer sound system, and plen ty of snacks, but you also need that feeling of relief as soon as you walk in Make it a place where you can invite your friends and have a good time

Man caves don’t have to be the stereotypically awful, dingy rooms that everyone immediately thinks of With a little thought put into the design, your man cave will be the best one on the block Turn awful to awesome by adding a few toys, creating a theme, and making the space – we have to say it – inviting Pretty soon, your whole crew will be drooling over your prized eight-pointers on the wall and your brand new game table, and they’ll be thinking of ways to build their very own ultimate man cave

NORTHERN OUTDOORS ADVENTURE RESORT | THE FORKS

Northern Outdoors is the top outfitter and resort in Maine to book if you ’ re searching for the ultimate whitewater rafting adventure When they opened in 1976, the sport of whitewater rafting was figuratively “just learning to walk ” The infancy of the of the activity allowed the guides of Northern Outdoors to pioneer the rivers in the area, making each trip eventful and more popular by the season In 1983, they built the main lodge and officially named themselves Northern Outdoors Around this time, they also opened the resort for year-round fun, by adding snowmobiling, fishing, and other activities

Today, you can raft through the Kennebec River, the Dead River, or the Penobscot River with confidence, as each guide is an expert on the water The scenery is unmatchable and the safety is a given, so whitewater rafting can be enjoyed by the whole family during your trip The main lodge is where most of the goodies are, but there is another camping location, the Katahdin Adventure Base Camp, that is three hours away

For the best combination of luxury and immersion in the outdoors, rent one of the Northern Outdoors Club Cabins The Club Cabins are extremely luxurious, with floor-to-ceiling wood paneling and hand carved furniture throughout Giant windows that open up to the pristine woods that surround the cabin make for a beautiful view Each Club Cabin is a short distance

away from the main lodge, so the community amenities are never too far away

At the cabins, you’ll find a fully-equipped kitchen, jacuzzi tubs, gas fireplaces, satellite television, a private deck with charcoal grills, and plenty of seating for your entire group The cabins can accommodate up to 7 people, and range from $350-$550 a night, depending on the season The winter season is peak season, so it is more costly than the summer season is, but the “best value” week for the winter time is from December 30th to January 28th, and from February 26th to March 31st

The main lodge provides a variety of luxury amenities to make sure that your rustic retreat is exactly how you imagined it would be Northern Outdoors has all of the regular perks, like a swimming pool, an oversized outdoor hot tub, a full-service restaurant, WiFi, and a game room, but they also have one thing that most resorts don’t: their own brewery!

THE KENNEBEC RIVER BREWERY OPENED AT THE MAIN LODGE IN 1996...

The Kennebec River Brewery opened at the main lodge in 1996, after several staff members began playing around with the thought of creating their own microbrews The relaxed atmosphere of the brewery makes for a great ending to your daily activities, as they pour you a cold Big Mama Blueberry Ale, or a Bear Naked Black Lager These originals are just a few of what the brewery offers, with Bear Naked being a German “dunkel” that is smooth, creamy, and chocolatey The Big Mama is selfexplanatory; a blonde ale with natural blueberry flavoring and a fruity aroma If you ’ re in the mood for a surprise, try the Brewer’s Choice, which is “whatever Mike feels like brewing” that day

Whether you feel like heading out for a day of elk or deer hunting in the southwest, or spending your vacation time whitewater rafting and camping out in the northern Maine woods in a luxury cabin, these resorts are here to make sure that you are more than satisfied with your pick of a rustic retreat Plenty of wood carvings and plaid, amazing outdoor expeditions, good food, andgreatpeople, make for an unforgettable stay, and top ratings ensure the upmost satisfaction every time

A A’S PARKS

Planning the Perfect Fall Adventure

The autumn season is the best time for exploring nature in general The air is crisp, the weather is perfect, and the animals are active Really diving head-first into the wilderness and being able to experience all that a park has to offer , is what most outdoor enthusiasts want, so why not try out the top-rated destinations for the cooler seasons? Gear up and come along, as we venture through the parks of South Carolina, Colorado, and the Northern Maine Woods!

Congaree National Park S o u t h C a

Congaree National Park is an old growth paradise that protects the largest area of bottomland hardwood forest in the country Exploring Congaree National Park in the cooler months means fewer insects and beautiful weather The park is nearly 27,000 acres in area, and is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including bobcats, feral hogs, turtles, turkeys, otters, deer, coyotes, and snakes

Camp out in the park for a night or two! Backcountry camping is free, but venture into the primitive sites at your own risk There are two popular campgrounds within the park, Longleaf and Bluff The Longleaf Campground is $10 per night, and $20 for group sites The Bluff Campground is $5 per night for a regular tent site If you sign up for an annual pass, there are additional discounts that will be given along with that Longleaf provides restroom facilities, but Bluff does not There isn’t any running water at either campground, but water is available 24 hours a day at the nearby Harry Hampton Visitor Center

Congaree National Park is known as the “Home of

Champions,” because of the beautiful old growth forests and the “champion trees” that call it home Congaree has one of the largest concentrations of these “champion trees” in the world! Fifteen species here are the tallest, including loblolly pine, cherrybark oak, swamp chestnut oak, sweetgum, overcup oak, American elm, and the common persimmon The loblolly pine stands at 167 feet tall, and the height of the oaks range from 130 feet to nearly 160 feet

There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy here, especially while you ’ re camping, such as canoeing and kayaking, hiking, nature watching, and fishing Hiking is self-guided or ranger-led, depending on what you feel more comfortable with Brochures for self-guided trips are available at the visitor center If you ’ re up for a true hiking adventure, try taking on the Kingsnake Trail, which is over eleven miles in length, and winds through some of the most beautiful – and pristine – parts of the park The Kingsnake trail is also the most likely place to spot bobcats! With gorgeous scenery and amazing fall weather, this is one of the best parks to travel to in the cooler months

Rocky Mountain National Park has a very high elevation, one of the highest in the country, that ranges from 7,000 feet to nearly 15,000 feet The highest point in the park is Longs Peak, which has an elevation of 14,259 feet The variety of ecosystems makes Rocky Mountain one of the most unique parks in the nation. There are four distinct ecosystems within the park: montane, subalpine, alpine tundra, and riparian The riparian ecosystem is one that thrives on the banks of rivers and occurs throughout the entire park The variety of different habitats allows for nearly 400 species of mammals and birds to thrive within the park boundaries Spectacular sightings include the gray wolf, the American bison, and the grizzly bear

There were a recorded 4 5 million visitors that came to see the park in 2016, so you may want to plan ahead before dropping in Take advantage of the free park shuttle in case parking lots become full Call ahead for campground reservations and always check the weather before heading out Popular campgrounds, such as Glacier Basin and Aspenglen, will fill up quickly, so reservations are a must if you ’ re wanting to camp out here The Timber Creek Campground is on the west side of the park, and usually fills up last, so that may be a better option if you are planning a quick, last-minute trip. Located in the Northern Maine Woods region, Baxter State Park is a hardwood forest habitat, with native trees, such as maple, birch, beech, spruce, and more The park is nearly 210,000 acres in area and much of the land is covered in these beautiful trees Baxter State Park is also home to the state’s highest peak, Mount Katahdin Mount Katahdin is a very steep formation, formed from “ a granite intrusion” that, over time, was weathered to the surface The Penobscot Indians named the mountain, as “Katahdin” means “The Greatest Mountains ”

There are 215 miles of trails to hike within the park, such as the Traveler Loop, which combines four trails to extend your hike for more than 10 miles Easier day hikes include: Roaring Brook Nature Trail, South Branch Falls Trail, and the Sandy Stream Pond Trail The Roaring Brook Nature Trail is a leisurely nature walk through the Roaring Brook and highland bogs, with several great viewing points of Mount Katahdin There are observation platforms and plenty of level pathways for an easy hike The length of the trail is 1 2 miles

The South Branch Falls Trail is only a mile round trip, and is considered to be a quick hike, simply for viewing the South Branch Falls Head down to the pools to watch the water cascade down, and don’t forget your camera! The Sandy Stream Pond Trail is also a quick hike, being only 1 5 miles round trip, and includes sightings of moose! There are also excellent views of Mount Katahdin on this trail, and of course you’ll get to see the Sandy Stream Pond

Some trails and campgrounds within the park will require a reservation, so make sure you plan in advance if you ’ re looking to camp overnight or stay in the area for the weekend Parking spots are better off being reserved, as the remaining spots are first-come, first-served

Whetheryou’re looking to camp outamongstthe waterfalls of the Northern Maine Woods, searching for the vast scenery of the Rocky Mountains, or wanting to view the champion trees of the Congaree, the fall is the best time for all three Of course, the beauty here is year-round, but the weather and the season makes for a beautiful time to explore America’s parks!

FISHING

TOP TIPS & TACTICS [

Going fishing in the fall doesn’t have to mean that you are limited to certain types of fish and specific areas of interest. You can cast a line anytime, anywhere (law permitting). Knowing how to adapt to the weather changes is the most important part of fishing year-round. Whether you’re hoping for “off-season” crappie, a pike with attitude, or a trophysized bass, these fishing tips will whip y our casting game into shape!

Bass will be moving this time of year, so it won’t be too hard to reel one in.

First and foremost, you have to know the land If you have taken a liking to a certain area for your fall fishing excursions, it is important to know where the best spots are, and where specific species will be lingering For example, if you are fishing for crappie in the fall, you will want to make sure that you ’ re hunkering down near cover, like low-hanging trees, tall grasses, and shallow banks Crappie will be moving up into shallower water as the weather starts to cool down, because the depths of the lakes will be too cold and without much food In the southern region, the weather will still be slightly warm, so you won’t have to worry about sticking to the shallow water as much, but it is best to judge based off of the daily temperature

Bass will be moving this time of year, so it won’t be too hard to reel one in The fall is when bass aggressively attack food to fatten up for the winter season Because of this, they will be going after anything that moves in the water The most important thing when it comes to fall bass fishing: choosing your lures and bait wisely Live bait is usually always preferred over lures when it comes to bass because of the smell that will attract them However, lures can be quite beneficial if you know how to jig and crank Another tip: go where the shad are Bass will follow the shad up to the banks, which is where they will be going for warmer water Go for a bobber in the shallower areas, and move it around a bit You will have to expect that the bass will be more lethargic during the calmer days, when the water is cold and there are barely any breaks At this time, it’s best to go deep and keep little movement on some live bait

66 | Fall 2017 | Adventure Outdoors

No matter what fish you are searching for, it is never a bad idea to cast several lines at a time, all with different sinkers and lures If you have the option of grabbing half a dozen rods, set them all out accordingly, with a enough space in between, and anchor down Simply wait to see what works Perhaps that day they’ll prefer the crankbait crawdaddy, or the bright lure with a glittery tail and a bobber Other days, they may go for only live bait, possibly even a piece of bread soaked in pickle juice

When you have a handful of rods out, and you are testing all these different combinations, once you find what works, stick with it if you are looking to bring home a bucket full Keep in mind that the best bait is going to be what the fish are used to seeing during this time of year If you are fishing with spring frog baits in the fall, you may only get a bite or two, if any If you are fishing with bait that matches the season, you are much more likely to snag a lunker

Since you know the land, the weather, and now, which bait combo is working, you can adjust your times accordingly If you are a morning fisherman, you will need to know the movements on the water for that day If you are more prone to fishing at night, then you will have to adjust your lights accordingly, and expect that certain species won’t be out Fishing at night will mean that you will have a better chance at reeling in a big one if you are hanging out in deeper waters This is more true for the northern areas, where the change in temperature won’t be as dramatic During the day, you will definitely want to move toward shallower water When in doubt, always stay near vegetation The greener the better This is where small baitfish will be hiding out and feeding, w to stock up on its food

Catfish move similarly to bass, in that they will be aggressively attacking their food sources as the water gets cooler For catfish, it is best to stay near the shore, and if possible, along the rocks Catfish will be moving to the shores for coverage during the day, and the rocks bring them comfort, so that is where they’ll be most likely to bite Catfish are one of the smarter species, and will not bite at a lure, unless you ’ re lucky It is recommended that you stick to live, smelly bait when casting a line for these fish Because you are probably going to catch your prized catfish near the rocks, you will want to ensure that your line is a strong one Catfish are hard to reel in, and the rocks only make it harder, with the probability of your line breaking against the sharp surfaces

as you pull them up A strong line makes for an easier reel

Pike is another good fish to have a strong line for These fish are extremely aggressive during the fall, for the same reasons as bass and catfish, but they are much more likely to fight and cut your line in an instant Using a predatory line is your best bet Pike are fast, and will be located farther north Because of this, the waters here will be colder, meaning the fish will be attacking your bait with angst Go for a crankbait or some type of lure that you can move at a rapid pace with ease This will create a challenge for the pike and they will instantly become interested Once they lock on, prepare for a fight

The Great Pee Dee and the Little Pee Dee rivers are just two of the many waterways to explore and discover in the Pee Dee Region of South Carolina. These pristine and historic waterways offer adventure and an appreciation of nature that can be enjoyed by all.

Freshwater fishing is where it’s at for the fall season, especially with so many fall bass fishing tournaments going on, as well as trout and pike adventures If you are considering signing up for a tournament or group fishing trip, you will need to check for permits and fees Deep sea saltwater fishing excursions are fun, too, but they’ll require an entirely different set of equipment, as you will be dealing with bigger fish than in freshwater If you ’ re considering saltwater fishing this fall, we suggest booking a charter that will provide you with all necessary gear and training

Always make sure that you are fishing legally, and brush up on which species are illegal to throw back, as well as which ones you must release Purchase a species guide ifyou are not too sure about the types of fish thatyou will be picking up, and always make sure you have a tackle box with plenty of extras As long as you follow these guidelines, you will not leave empty-handed

BATTLEFIELDS & BURIAL GROUNDS

In R emembrance of the American Revolutionary War

Yorktown Victory Monument

IS A DIFFICULT War PILL TO SWALLOW

BUT REMEMBRANCE BRINGS US HOPE AND WISDOM GENEROUS PORTIONS OF OUR AMERICAN HERITAGE COME FROM THE BATTLES WE’VE FOUGHT TOGETHER, AND IN THE PLACES THAT WE LAY AT REST WITH ONE ANOTHER

A look into the battlefields and burial grounds of two very important sites that tipped the scales in our favor during the American Revolutionary War will help us to understand the significance of honoring their sacrifices

The decisions that were made, the lives that were lost, and the history that lives on through these monuments and cemeteries, churches and homes, will be what reminds us of what we fought for and what to do (and not do) in the future Take a walk through the battlefield of Trenton, where a surprise attack put one foot back on the ground for Patriots. Or, visit the Nelson House in Yorktown, where Lt General Cornwallis stayed during the final battle that provoked a British surrender Take in the American Revolutionary War culture, and celebrate the value of general remembrance

TRENTON, NEW JERSEY

//////////////////

The Battle of Trenton was a small, but mighty battle that took place during the American Revolutionary War The battle began on the morning of the 26th of December, in the year of 1776 The timing of the battle during the war was what made it so influential George Washington crossed the Delaware River the night before and led the Continental Army to the battlefield in Trenton, where they fought the Hessian soldiers The Hessians were German soldiers that were contracted by the British to fight for them in the American Revolutionary War The British hired nearly 30,000 German soldiers, which made up a quarter of the British Troops that fought against the Continental Army

The Continental Army had been fighting an uphill battle – literally – and had been forced to retreat from New Yo rk to New Jersey and even Pennsylvania Because of Washington’s plan to cross the river overnight, the Continental Army was able to surprise and capture the Hessian soldiers that were waiting for them in Trenton Although the battle was bloody, it was brief, and with nearly the entire Hessian force being captured, the Battle of Trenton was considered a huge victory The timing of this battle was pi votal, because after so many defeats, a victory this swift boosted the Continental Army’s morale, thus causing an increase in enlistments The Battle of Trenton cost us some soldiers, no doubt, but we gained so many more from its outcome

“We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.”
- BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

Today, you can visit the site of the Battle of Trenton, via the Trenton Battle Monument

The monument is placed where the Army was positioned for the fight The monument was erected from 1891-1893, and stands at 150 feet above the street level

At the very top of the massive granite pillar, stands a bronze statue of George Washington with his hand extended, pointing in the direction in which the Army was to fire At the bottom of the monument, there are

two additional bronze statues, both guarding the entrance One is a statue of Private John Russell, who became known for being the one that guided the Army across the ice-cold waters of the Delaware River

The other statue is that of Private Blair McClenachan, who also had a hand in the Battle of Trenton

Visit the monument and explore the grounds surrounding the commemoration

to the soldiers who would not give up, even if it cost them everything Nearby in several church cemeteries, including the First Presbyterian Church and St Michael’s Episcopal Church, you can actually visit the gravesites of many of the soldiers who lost their lives during the battle, as well as several important figures who took part in the establishment of the thirteen colonies, and even signers of the Declaration of Independence

YORKTOWN, VIRGINIA

The Siege of Yorktown, also known as the Battle of Yorktown, was the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War French Army troops fought with the Continental Army led by George Washington, and eventually made Lt General Cornwallis of the British Army surrender After Cornwallis surrendered, the British government negotiated to end the conflict and the Continental Army was the victor The battle lasted for days, but eventually ended on October 19th, 1781

The importance of the Siege of Yorktown was that it effectively ended the war Today, you can visit many historical sites in the area that pay homage to the significant battle, including the Yorktown National Cemetery and the Yorktown Victory Monument

The Yorktown National Cemetery is located just next to the actual site where the British surrendered to George Washington Most of the bodies buried at the Yorktown National Cemetery are of Union Army soldiers, but there are ten known confederate soldiers and several wives that are buried there, as well Out of the total of 2,204 burials that took place in the cemetery, there are only 1,596 marked graves Only 747 graves within the entire cemetery are of known soldiers, family members, and participants in the war

Yorktown National Cemetery

//////////////////////////////
“Atop the giant mon ument now stands a figure of V ictory, which was put in the original figure of Liberty’s place, after it was struck by lightning in 1942.”

The location was originally chosen because of the 600 original burials that took place there These 600 were the Union soldiers that were dead in this spot from battle and various wounds Because the battle was spread over an amount of days, with many being injured or killed, a lot of soldiers from both sides were spread out and buried in various spots around the battleground In 1866, the Yorktown National Cemetery pledged to remove the surrounding dead that had been buried within a 50 mile radius of Yorktown, and reinter them with the original 600

The Yorktown Victory Monument is one of several major sites to visit within the Colonial National Historical Park. It wasn’t erected until 1884, even though plans to build the monument were underway just five days after the surrender in 1781 Money to build the monument was an issue, but just before the surrender’s centennial, the nation pulled together to re-motivate the construction Atop the giant monument now stands a figure of Victory, which was put in the original figure of Liberty’s place, after it was struck by lightning in 1942 The nearby Nelson House makes for an eerie visit as well, as it is believed to have been Cornwallis’s headquarters during the final battle

No matter which monument you decide to visit, or which battlefield you choose to walk through, you’ll be getting a great amount of knowledge about the history of this country and what foundations it was built on. These two American Revolutionary War destinations, however, are the pivotal sites that brought true resolution to an ongoing conflict that definitively shaped our nation

When it comes to sticky situations, or times where we find ourselves in a predicament, we often use critical thinking skills to find a solution Whether we’re trying to change a flat tire, or trying to survive a natural disaster, it is expected for us to become frustrated, and even a little panicky. The best thing we can do is prepare ourselves for the worst, so when problems arise, we can handle them with ease, and if (knock on wood) the worst ever does rear its ugly head, we know how to handle that, too.

Take this advice, study it, and apply it daily. It will not only help you prepare for the worst, but it will also steer you away from bad advice that is often given out by inexperiencedpeople It is often said, “you never really know what you’ll do untilyou’re put in that situation.” While this is true, it is never a bad idea to prepare for multiple scenarios. Practice makes perfect, but in this case, we hope you never have to deal with anything more than a simulation.

First of all, “bug-out” bags are a waste of time You will end up filling them with unnecessary things that you ’ ve probably never used before in your life, only to get stuck in the wilderness and have no idea how to survive If you are skilled in outdoor living, by all means, pack yourself a last-resort bag, but if you are a beginner, all tools will be worthless to you until you know how to get the most o ut of them Most lists for these types of bags include things like radios, binoculars, a laminated map of the area you are in, etc This equipment is great for a day hike, but horrible for trying to survive a disaster The number one reason for this: the last thing you want to do in a crisis is expose yourself out in the open You are basically walking into chaos looking for a solution; you can’t fight fire with fire if you are going in blind Also, having a map of the area you are in makes no sense, since you will most likely be looking to either hunker down (meaning very little outside travel) or get out of Dodge

Stay indoors if at all possible Make yourself a shelter in the safest, most interior portion of your home, such as a basement or the center of your house If you are really committed, you will probably already have a shelter made that is prepped and stocked with nonperishables and other survival goodies, like weapons and books Staying indoors will eliminate most outside threats, especially if you take precautionary measures to make sure your home’s exterior is as protected as possible

Practicing everyday physical fitness is also important We don’t often plan for the worst, but training to make sure your endurance is in good shape will help you in a physically challenging situation Test your cardio skills, build your weighttraining abilities, and maintain your physical appearance as best you can In many “do or die” situations, the first ones to make it out and to safety are those that are smart enough to initially notice danger, and fast enough to escape it

we dont often plan for the worst, but training to make sure your endurance is in good shape will help you in a physically challenging situation.“ 82 | Fall 2017 | Adventure Outdoors

items, along with bottles of water You will want to remember to change these items out once in a while, as most of them will never be used – and thank goodness for that!

This piece of advice is a little on the scary side, because you’ll have to put your trust in someone, but it is well worth it if you have that someone that you can count on This is where you use the buddy system, not just when it comes to your family, but being able to trust a nearby neighbor or a friend that doesn’t live too far away During big disasters, larger groups are generally safer than singular travelers or small groups Put your confidence in someone nearby that you know, and make a plan that they two of you can count on if there ever comes a time where you need to team up

“Having a weapon is useless if you do not know how to use it, so if you own or are thinking about owning a firearm, make sure you take it out to clean it and use it periodically.”

Practice defensive skills. This could not be more necessary, especially if things go super south Having a weapon is useless if you do not know how to use it, so if you own or are thinking about owning a firearm, make sure you take it out to clean it and use it periodically Do NOT use your firearm without the proper permits and legal documents that your state will require You will have to do your research, depending on your area ’ s rules, to make sure that you ’ re following all of the necessary guidelines It is highly recommended that you take a professional course at a shooting range, with a licensed instructor, before you purchase a weapon and while you ’ re training with it

Of course, these are the basic tips for staying alive, and preparing for the worst Keep in mind that all of these suggestions are solely based on the fact that whatever you ’ re facing will be a make-it-orbreak-it situation, and this skillset should not be taken lightly Having this knowledge will allow you to breathe easy through the small stuff , and more than likely, make it through the hard stuff , too

A Hero Forever

Arlington National Cemetery

As civilians, we hear so many stories of war, and of death, and of soldiers that are constantly fighting for our freedom We listen to the legends that movies and books are modeled after, and we try to understand what those front lines must have been like Only those who have genuinely gone through these situations will know what that feels like; What fear and terror, and even sudden death, feel like

Today, we ’ re recognizing a war hero who endured those trials in World War I He is one among many that have helped to bring us victory, freedom, and safety over the years

This is the story of Henry Johnson, a Sergeant in the U.S. Army. This is the story of a man who fought for his life and the life of the fellow solider fighting beside him; A story of a true hero, one that will remain remembered forever

Henry Johnson was a young, straight-forward, African American man from Winston-Salem, South Carolina He moved to New York as a teen, and in 1917, Johnson, who was then in his early twenties, enlisted in the 15 th New York Infantry Regiment, an all-black unit for the National Guard The unit was renamed the 369th Infantry Regiment when they set out for France during World War I The men in the unit were known as the “Harlem Hellfighters ”

This unit that Johnson was in was known for being very poorly trained, and the men often only performed minimal duties that required “menial labor,” including digging, stocking, and unloading ships. Because of this, Johnson never thought he would be on the front lines during the war; he was wrong

time, stood watch with a fellow soldier, Needham Roberts, on a midnight shift to make sure that there weren’t any nearby Germans that may have been planning a sneak-attack Unfortunately, the Germans were doing just that Around 2 a m , Johnson heard someone cutting the fence wires, and before he knew it, Johnson was face to face with German troops

Johnson knew he had to warn his unit and still defend the perimeter, so he sent Roberts back to tell their troops that they were in

oward camp, but quickly ght instead Roberts was whilst trying to make it hnson had him lie down the darkness

ompletely out of ammo, and the Germans were on top of them Johnson waved his rifle around and kept them at bay until it broke and they completely swarmed in The German troops were trying to capture Roberts and carry him off, but Johnson refused to let that happen He pulled out his last and only working weapon, a Bolo knife He began stabbing flesh until he couldn’t see anymore He killed four Germans and wounded more than 20 additional enemies. He saved Roberts and protected his trench “Every slash meant something, believe me, ” Johnson stated, “I fought for my life ”

After the parade and congratulatory welcome-homes faded, Johnson ran into several problems with getting on military disability He couldn’t hold a job because of his injuries He couldn’t take care of his family; His marriage failed, and he passed away in his 30s Henry Johnson was no more than another fallen veteran, and he had barely been able to live life

Johnson was buried with full honor in the Arlington National Cemetery Theodore Roosevelt named Sgt Johnson as being “ one of the five bravest Americans to serve in World War I ” In 1996, well after his death, people were still recognizing Johnson’s efforts and undeniable bravery; Former President Bill Clinton awarded the late soldier with the Purple Heart “The Army awarded him the Distinguished Service Cross, which is the country’s 2nd highest military decoration ” Finally, on June 2, 2015, Barack Obama held a ceremony in the White House, and awarded Henry Johnson with the highest and most prestigious decoration: the Medal of Honor

Wate rfow lin g Experience The Ultimate

Duck hunting, really any type of waterfowl hunting, requires a certain skillset that you won’t be able to obtain without a mentor and lots of practice. If you are considering waterfowl hunting for the first time, you will want to follow this guide to bringing about the ultimate waterfowling experience. From tips on how to use duck calls, to what type of gear you should be bringing along, these suggestions will offer a great deal of comfort to those who are just starting out, and are good for brushing up on the basics if you consider yourself an experienced waterfowl hunter

“ You will need a set of good waders , preferably waist to chest high.”

First things first: choose your gear You will need a set of good waders, preferably waist to chest high If you are trudging through deeper waters – while unlikely, still possible – you will hate to spend the rest of the day in your noisy, soggy, squishy boots Not only is this extremely uncomfortable, but you’ll do a good job of scaring away the birds Along with waders, you’ll also need a good face mask, a jacket, and gloves Opt for a hat as well, if you can Unlike other forms of hunting that require hunter’s orange to be somewhere on your person, you won’t need to dress head to toe in it for waterfowling Chances are, you will be in semi-populated hunting grounds that are known for hosting other hunters, and because waterfowl habitats are lowlevel marshes with very little coverage, hunter’s orange isn’t completely necessary, but not a bad idea to have

if you have never hunted the land before

Go for camo that matches your surroundings This should be a no-brainer, but waterfowl rookies have been known to chase off game simply because they show up in Army fatigues, with no regard for the environment they’re actually placing themselves in Waterfowl habitats are mostly brown, so stay away from any overly-green or digitized patterns The face mask is highly important, along with the gloves For one, you will get sunburnt without protection, even in the cooler months, and possibly other inconveniences from the cool weather itself, such as chapped lips, dry skin, etc Along with that, your skin itself is going to look out of place to the waterfowl, especially ducks, as they’re very cautious Make sure the majority of your body is covered and out of sight

THE GUN IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF GEAR,

as that’s how you will be taking down your waterfowl If you don’t already have a gun of choice, and don’t know what to go with, a shotgun is your best bet. Stick with a standard 12 gauge Your ideal range is about 20 yards out You don’t want to shoot them too close, because your bag limit may not match the amount of birds you actually kill, whether you meant to or not The same goes for shooting too far out If the birds are out of range, and you shoot wishfully, you will end up wounding the birds instead of killing them, retrieval will be hard for the ones you did get, and you will have ruined the spot for anyone else in the area Make sure you stay within range.

You will need decoys and calls if you are hoping for the ideal range and bird For example, when duck hunting, you will want about a half dozen decoys floating around Sit and wait for the ducks to circle around the decoys; they’ll be checking them out Once they get close enough or land next to one is when you are good to go, but allow them some time to survey your spot before you go all gung-ho When it comes to purchasing a call, especially a duck call, opt for a wooden model Most experienced hunters will tell you that the wooden calls make softer, more realistic sounds, which bring in more birds, thus a better hunting experience

Waterfowl hunting also differs from other hunting styles, in that you are not going to want to stay still for the entire time Birds move around, they travel long distances, and they are quite jumpy, so you will need to mimic some of those characteristics to keep up with them Instead of setting up a blind and staking out a certain spot for days, you will want to pack up and move periodically This is the exact opposite of what you would do on a deer hunting trip, so if that is what you are used to, don’t be surprised if those same techniques leave you empty-handed

AO: What is your favorite hunting memory? Why was it so special?

TN: I think back fondly to our annual family bowhunting excursions in Northern Michigan for opening day of bow season every October My mind reels with graphic, stimulating details of the gas stations with bows and arrows and guns and ammo on display The firestorm of colors in those Michigan hardwoods is as if they are silkscreened on my soul I can see my hero, Fred Baer, sitting next to me at the counter of the Grayling restaurant, eating our cherry pie and sipping big glasses of milk together; incredible memories overall But every hunt is indescribably thrilling, no matter where, what, or when It is always about the “who,” and I've shared so many very special campfires with so many special people, that my glowing memory cup runneth over!

AO: How did the idea and concept of Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild come about?

TN: Hunting and all things outdoors are our cherished lifestyle, so we knew that an honest documentary presentation of how the majority of American hunting families celebrate this hands-on conservation lifestyle would be entertaining, fun, educational, and most importantly, a dynamic sucker punch to the soulless gut s of the antihunting animal rights loony fringe freaks out there Talk about win, win, win!! We don’t produce our show per se, but rather simply push the record button and document the honest, down to earth, pragmatic, natural lifestyle of hunting, fishing, trapping, resource stewardship, and ultimate accountable environmentalism We are the tooth, fang, and claw truth family

AO: What is your go-to bow of choice? What makes it the best?

TN: I shoot, test, abuse, and experiment with every bow out there, and I fell in love with the feel and efficiency of my Mathews I’ve got my amazing Mathews Halon bow on the road with me, and as the ultimate warmup for the ultimate rock-n-roll outrage every night, there is nothing that can compare with the aim small, miss small, mystical flight of the arrow from this great piece of equipment

AO: You’ve been inducted into the National Bowhunters Hall of Fame. Are there any tips you can give out to those who may just be starting to use a bow?

TN: Guide the youngsters slow and easy into the sport, and give them a helping hand But guide them to do everything themselves, so that they feel a sense of belonging, and the joys of struggle, along with the gratification of individual accomplishment Dedication and practice, practice, practice is still the guiding force to becoming proficient

AO: Can you tell us a little bit about Ted Nugent Kamp for Kids? What inspired you to develop this program?

TN: Being honored to know the great Fred Bear my whole life, it was on what turned out to be Fred’s last hunt in, October of 1987, that I was blessed with another very special time with the great man It was one of the most powerful moments in my life Fred told me how he wasn’t so sure of this loud rock-n-roll Motor City Madman at first, until he learned of my militant defiance of substance abuse, gung-ho law enforcement support, family values, and nonstop dedication to promoting bowhunting and conservation to the masses everywhere I went But the most important thing he told me this memorable day, was how I should ignore my critics, who he said were just “small-minded, jealous fools who didn’t understand how to stand up for the important things in a meaningful, effective way ” Fred died that following April, and I decided to take his words to the ultimate level and create a nonprofit children’s charity Our 501-C3 Ted Nugent Kamp for Kids was unleashed, and with an amazing army of hardcore, dedicated volunteers, we set about to bring the outdoor lifestyle to its maximum visibility by holding annual camps where we teach archery, bowhunting, hunter education, firearm’s safety and marksmanship, trapping, fishing, conservation, animal husbandry, slingshot marksmanship, spear chucking, woodsmanship, wood crafting, wilderness

survival, flint napping, wildlife education, skinning, gutting, butchering, and a strong sense of militant anti-substance abuse, and how being the best you can be – clean and sober – is the only way to obtain The American Dream We have graduated more than 16,000 youngsters in Michigan, Colorado, South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa, and we fill all camps each year to capacity

AO: WHY DO YOU ENJOY THIS TIME OF YEAR SO MUCH?

TN: Nature heals, and during the explosive natural phenomenon of the fall season of harvest, the Nugent family is moved deep in our souls to celebrate Thanksgiving every step of the way Tis the hunting season and I am in 100% committed Hunting, fishing, and trapping are essential responsibilities to a balanced, healthy, natural world, and we are an integral part of America's history and culture Once necessary to survive, hunting and fishing are now two very popular forms of recreation, while keeping millions of American families connected to the land and its precious creatures Like all my friends, we hunt simply because we are hunters

AO: WHAT EPISODE OF TED NUGENT SPIRIT OF THE WILD HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE SO FAR? WHY?

TN: That would be impossible to narrow down, as we thoroughly enjoy everything we do outdoors

Personally, I prefer each episode my amazing “Queen of the Forest” wife, Shemane, is on as she is so good at what she does and so exciting to watch doing it!

AO: Do you have any hunts left on your bucket list?

What would be your dream adventure?

TN: Though I have always fantasized about hunting the various wild sheep species, mountain goats, and other critters, I live my ultimate dream every day afield on our sacred family properties in Michigan and Texas for all game Close to home, with my family and dogs, is my favorite hunting in the world!

AO: How reward ing is it to prepare and enjoy your own kill? What are some homecooked favorites?

TN: Rugged individualism, genuine independence, and overall self-sufficiency are the ultimate rewards of gratification Wild game is the most nutritious and delicious protein on earth Period No matter the critter, from squirrel, fowl, moose, and caribou, to antelope or venison of any kind, killing quick and clean and keeping the carcass clean and cold are the keys to ultimate table fare Pick a shank, slab, haunch, or strap from any game, clean off all membrane and fat, and marinate overnight in half olive oil and half Vernor ’ s Ginger Ale, with lots of finely diced garlic, white and red onion, a little salt and pepper Then, tong the slabs onto nice, hot, orange natural-wood coals until singed on each side, but pink in the middle Do the same with potatoes and vegetables of choice, and you are in for the highest of taste bud highs

AO: If you could only choose one hobby, would it be the bow or the guitar? Why?

TN: I so love and crave making music, that it was inevitable that music would be my life, my avocation, and my life-supporting vocation Thusly, I so maniacally crave and love my hunting, that it, too, was destined to be much more than just a casual hobby in my life Rocking and touring full-time made me realize that the spirit and stealth of my hunting lifestyle powerfully fortified the authority of my music, and vice versa The loud, high velocity ferocity of my musical career set me up to immensely value and appreciate my quiet predator stealth time beyond the sonic bombast of the concrete jungle of my musical adventures Like everybody I know, I work as hard as I can humanly push myself, in order to take maximum time to hunt Eventually, the intensity of my hunting celebration in the media ignited enough fires to push me into creating a guiding and outfitting business, Sunrize Safaris, and eventually create the numberone-rated hunting TV show, our beloved Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild on Outdoor Channel Now that, ladies and gentlemen, constitutes one hell of a dreamy American Dream

AO: What can we expect f rom Ted Nugent in the future? Anything new in the works?

TN: Music is my life driving force and I play the living hell out of my guitars daily, and as sure as the sun rises in the east, killer licks, ideas, grooves, patterns, and songs erupt every time! My intense life has many priorities that keep me very busy, but we all hope like mad to record some of these new masterpieces ASAP! We’re touring nons top right into the opening of hunting season as always, and then we’ll be documenting how millions of American hunting and fishing families still live off the land and represent the frontlines for real hands-on conservation and true environmentalism Then, if lucky, we will hit the studio to record a new killer record next spring!
