FRENCH QUARTER
The French Quarter, and New Orleans itself, have come a long way from the early settlement days when the French used the area as a military outpost The French Quarter is the oldest neighborhood in the city of New Orleans, and has a vibrant mixture of cultures that have established a new lifestyle all their own Influences from African, Spanish, and French settlers have
turned the city into a melting pot of cuisines, traditions, and heritages that all stir together effortlessly
The city’s importance grew as the United States used the port for an opening to the Mississippi to ship goods and extend services New Orleans became a hub for importing and exporting, as well as countrywide commercial expansion The French Quarter, also known as the Vieux Carré, is literally translated into “central square ” or “city center”
Explore the French Quarter’s influences and development through early architecture, museums, and walking tours that will explain, in depth, the history behind the neighborhood Take a tour of The 1850 House, a museum that displays artifacts and furnishings from one of the most prosperous eras that ever graced the city Visiting the house will only cost you a $3 entry fee, and you will be able to feel the luxury and vitality of early ancestors as soon as you walk through the door
14 | Summer 2017 | Adventure Outdoors
Perhaps the most important building in the area is The Cabildo, which is now a museum and a historic site, where the Louisiana Purchase was signed in 1803 “The Cabildo is one of the most historically significant buildings in America Built between 1795 and 1799, The Cabildo served as the seat of government in New Orleans during the Spanish colonial period ”
To visit The Cabildo, you will pay around $6 per person, but hours of operation differ and prices vary depending on which tour you decide to take For more information on tours and sightseeing around the French Quarter, visit the Louisiana State Museum’s website
LEXINGTON & CONCORD
Another famous battle site to visit is the
Battle of Lexington and Concord The battle was “the first engagement of the American Revolution ” This battle was fought between the British and militiamen from Massachusetts, and was more of a raid and an ambush in some cases, as the militiamen attempted to drive out the British troops The road from Boston to Concord is now the battle site and is protected within the Minute Man National Park
Park fees are $7 for adults, and children 16 and under are free, but this is not for entrance Entrance is free However, if you would like a guided tour, you will have to pay the visitors center. Visit the site of “the shot heard ‘round the world,” as you make your way to Concord’s North Bridge The famous Minute Man Statue, followed by the bridge and the conserved landscape, is a picture you will not want to miss out on
Take a guided tour and don’t miss the Road to Revolution, a theatrical program that gives insight into what led up to this important moment in history.
During certain times of the year, you can catch men in costume, view a musket firing demonstration, and participate in real battle formations These activities will give you entirely new insight on what these soldiers fought for and just how influential their actions are still to this day

TRAIL OF TEARS
TRAIL OF TEARS
The Trail of Tears was a terrible event that led to the mistreatment, torture, and death of many Native Americans that claimed land east of the Mississippi River President Andrew Jackson sought to relocate all of the Indians in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Alabama, and even referred to this process as “Indian removal.” Many tribes were forced out of their lands, to walk what became known as the Trail of Tears Hundreds of lives were lost and most suffered during the journey west
Today, the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail is owned and protected by the National Park Service You can walk the original trail and commemorate the survival of the tribes that had to endure this great suffering Because the trail spans over nearly 1,000 miles, it crosses through almost a dozen present-day states, including North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Illinois, Missouri, Alabama, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Oklahoma
The National Park Service provides outlets for finding sites to visit along the trail, as well as different things to do to learn about and honor the history of the Native American people Visit their website for more information on interactive exhibits, tours, historic buildings, trail segments, and more

While you ’ re in the park, it’s best not to miss the phenomenon known as Thunder Hole Thunder Hole is a cave, half submerged in roaring waves, that pokes out of the rocky shores that meet the sea Because the waves hit the rocks so hard at the mouth of the cave, the result is a sound as loud as a train! It makes you feel as though you're in the midst of a thunderstorm, hence the name, Thunder Hole There is an upper level viewing area, but you won’t be untouched by the water spouts that could reach up to 40 feet

PRESERVING&PROTECTING AMERICA’SCAMPSITES Clean
GSome of them are common sense, and others are only observed by those who are experienced campers When out in the woods, it is best to observe and obey these rules, that way you are respecting both other campers around you, and the campsite itself. Whether you are going camping for the first time, or packing your bag for yet another camping trip of many, these rules will help you stay clean, happy, and helpful wherever you’re pitching your tent!
Most campers are familiar with the Leave No Trace movement Leave No Trace refers to a general guideline to reduce stress on wildlife and help maintain campsites for everyone to enjoy The movement developed seven principles in hopes that every camper would adhere to them and, in turn, help conserve the natural spaces that we all love so much The principles are as follows:
• Plan ahead
• Travel on du rable surfaces
• Dispose of waste
• Leave what you find
• Minimize campfires
• Respect wildlife
• Be considerate
These principles are good to brush up on, even if you are pretty familiar with each concept They allow for a basis of camping etiquette that not only creates an enjoyable environment, but provides knowledge and a reputable behavior pattern for future generations to follow as well
First, make s ure you have all that you are going to need for your trip, but don’t overpack Overpacking often causes stress on the campers themselves, allowing them to become less aware of everything they’re leaving behind or failing to keep track of, not to mention what they may leave laying around because they found that it wasn’t a needed item
“Leave No Trace refers to a general guideline to reduce stress on wildlife and help maintain campsites for everyone to enjoy.”
To avoid this, make sure you have all of the essentials, and nothing more You’re outside to enjoy the natural world, so keep it as simple as possible Be sure to pack a compass and a map of the area you will be in, and always research peak camping seasons If you ’ re visiting during a busier time, you may run into a lot of campers Looking into this before you leave could save you the time if you ’ re wanting a more private setting
Upon arrival to your campsite, it is important that you stay on designated trails when traveling through the grounds, whether you ’ re taking the path to the campground, or wandering about on a hiking trail These desig-
nated trails were made for a purpose: to relieve the area of high-traffic throughout, which, over time, would cause plant and animal life to diminish The trails in place are there to keep visitors from getting lost, as well, so following the paths will benefit everyone, and everything involved When camping more primitively, you’ll want to disperse (if in larger groups) when walking, so that the minimum amount of vegetation is disturbed Keep all main activities in an area without much foliage, and avoid new growth areas, or areas close to a natural water source You want to be close to the water source if you ’ re camping primitively, but no less than 200 feet from its surface edge

“If you are not a “people person,” keep your distance, but remain cordial, as you are all sharing the space with each other.”
Dispose of all waste properly More populated campsites will have designated areas for trash, but the objective is to pack up whatever you ’ ve brought out Human waste should be buried no less than 8 inches deep into the soil, and covered to disguise Gray water, or used water from showering and doing dishes, etc , should be scattered about the grounds and NOT dumped back into the water source It is best to use biodegradable soap, but dumping gray water (good soap, or not) is never allowed It can contaminate the source and pollute the natural habitat
Leaving everything how you found it goes along with not dumping your gray water back into the water source You want to leave the campsite and have it look as if you were never there in the first place This means there is no tearing down limbs or destroying shrubbery, no moving rocks or taking artifacts, and absolutely NO introductions of new species in the area For those of us who like to camp with our pets, they should be cleaned up after as well Make sure they are not digging a bunch of holes around the site or destroying the land in any way
Cutting down limbs and trees, even for a fire, is not permitted Instead, keep fires small and only use sticks and twigs that you find on the ground Make sure that you research the campsite that you ’ re using, as some campgrounds and
parks do not allow fires at all Other counties, when dry, may have a burn ban in effect, so even if they do allow campfires, you will want to double check before building one and facing a hefty fine The use of a campfire pan is best, so that you reduce the likelihood of your fire spreading When you ’ re finished, spread the ashes and scatter them once they are completely out
Respecting the wildlife and being considerate of other campers goes without saying You should never feed a wild animal, or try to interact with them closely Observe them from a respectable distance and admire them in their natural habitats Do not follow or approach them in any fashion You will find that other campers follow these rules and stick to the guidelines in place, so that every camping experience is a pleasant one Be respectful to other campers by following the hours of quiet time and interacting in a polite manner If you are not a “people person, ” keep your distance, but remain cordial, as you are all sharing the space with each other
Holding true to these suggestions will keep you up to date on camping etiquette, and when you arrive, you’ll know exactly what to do with your gear, and yourself Lend a helping hand ifyou see someone that may be struggling, and always be courteous Clean camping is fun camping for all!

REDDING, CA
There’s a new challenge waiting for you this summer in Redding, located in the heart of Northern California.
With more than 225 miles of trails, two pristine lakes perfect for any water activity, rivers ideal for fishing, and surrounded by national and state parks, Redding serves as a hub for adventure
It’s easy to spend a weekend exploring on land or tearing it up on the water at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area Bike around the lake, hike to any of four waterfalls reaching 220 feet tall, catch the wind in a sailboat on the always-full Whiskeytown Lake, or jump on a kayak or standup paddleboard and glide across the crystal clear water It won’t take long to understand why TIME Magazine labeled Redding as the “unofficial capital of kayaking ”
The fun in the sun continues at Shasta Lake. Tie the waterski, wakeboard or tube to your boat and cruise across the inviting water for an all-day escapade.
Or, cast a line out over the Sacramento River as one of several spots that make Redding a top notch fishing destination After a day on the trout-filled river, you’ll agree with Forbes, which named Redding a “Top 10 Fishing Town in North America ”
For the land adventurers, you won’t run out of places to hike, bike, walk, run or ride on our extensive trails, which the San Francisco Chronicle called the “ gem of the U S trail system ” The famous Sacramento River National Recreation Trail stretches 17 4 miles from Shasta Dam to the Sundial Bridge, a Redding landmark Whether you ’ re looking for easier paved paths or dirt trails for the daring enthusiasts, Redding’s outdoor paradise is asking to be conquered
It’s time to sunscreen up, load up the family and gear, and head to Redding – where fun meets adventure
LIVE BAIT VS. LURES
PLUS! BAIT ALTERNATIVES
It’s time to tackle the age-old question: Which is better for fishing, live bait or lures? Many fishing enthusiasts and sport anglers will debate for hours over what methods are more appealing, and provide more results. Some may argue that live bait is better because the fish are more familiar with it, with regards to the smell, texture, look, and bounce of a live-baited hook. Others will say that the brightly-colored, frilly lures are more trustworthy because they’ll stay on the line, not to mention that the lure is mobile, as long as you are properly imitating a natural movement
“
Saltwater fish, nine times out of ten, will choose live bait over a lure, simply because of the scent.
“
Which is more work? This is debatable as well When spending the day leisure fishing on a boat with a few beverages and some good friends, you may not want to be doing much work to begin with If you are fishing for sport, however, such as in a tournament or other event, you ’ re going to be doing as much work as you can to ensure that you hook a trophy Live bait is fun, but you will run through it very quickly, and getting the bait can take up much of your day Lures aren’t hard to get, but they may not always appeal to the fish as much as the old-fashioned worm or leech would With that being said, both live bait and lures take work and dedication to master, so it is best to practice with both
When it comes to saltwater, it is less arguable about what to put on the end of your line Saltwater fish, nine times out of ten, will choose live bait over a lure, simply because of the scent It has been documented that a saltwater fish will swim right up to a lure, and turn around without biting, just to chase down the smell of live bait that may be far away Freshwater fish, however, are less picky, and many anglers have reeled in lunkers with ease while using lures Lures are attractive when spending an extended amount of time out on the water as well, because you don’t have to keep them alive and you can interchange them depending on what you ’ re fishing for

The bright colors and shiny, glittery aspects of lures are what make them attractive, while live bait is fantastic for smell and natural movement There have been many fishing occasions where the live bait was used as a first choice, and once it ran out, the lures were hooked on Although this seems to be the more popular way to integrate the two into one fishing trip, lures are recommended as a cheaper alternative for early and late summer fishing, when the fish are biting at nearly everything because food is abundant and they are hungry Would you rather spend a few bucks on a flashy lure that will catch you fish after fish, or a good amount of money on live bait that may or may not be wasted before half of the day is through? Personal preference is what it all really comes down to
A common outcome of netting bait and searching for live bait on your own is that the bait dies before you get to use it, or you end up killing one hundred bait fish just to net one bucket of good ones.
During the summer months, bait fish are plentiful, and for good reason, as the seasons bring reproduction and plentiful food sources But, think about what you could possibly be doing to the ecosystem if you ’ re out hunting down bait fish every day The benefit is natural bait that moves and smells like real food The downfall is that the fish aren't actually getting fed, because of the decrease in bait fish as a natural food source, so therefore, you ’ re reeling in smaller, weaker fish Lures can be environmentally friendly, as far as keeping the ecosystem in regeneration goes, so they’re a good alternative, especially in months where food may be scarce
Taking it back to the general cost, if you are not netting your own bait, you ’ re buying it from a bait shop or some other store The cost of bait can be quite pricey, even for bulk frozen packages that may be on sale As a general rule, live bait is considered to be anything living or once living, such as shrimp, worms, leeches, minnows, chicken livers, etc If you are purchasing this every time you fish, over and over again, you are going to be putting a lot of money into the bait alone, never mind every other piece of gear you will need for a day out

When it comes to purchasing lures, you may be able to find some pretty inexpensive options, as well as top-of-the-line artificial bait with extra perks For example, some lures are made with noise and vibration mechanisms, which stimulate natural activity and pulsate through the water, attracting hungry fish who may otherwise turn away from a “dead” lure These high-tech lures are fun to use and great for bringing out those surface feeders and overall more active fish
We also have to use common sense when it comes to choosing between live bait or a lure, especially when con-
sidering usage For example, fish in murky, dark, and colder waters aren’t going to be very active, so something with a strong odor that will really get their attention is best This is when you want live bait or strong smelling bait, such as a chicken liver or blood-soaked bread The clearer it is, and the warmer it gets, the more active the fish that inhabit the water will be This is when lures bring out the best in every angler These guys are able to jig and crank with a fast presentation that makes the cast fun and inviting to the hungry fish The surface fish are going to be moving at a rapid pace, and looking for food in the process A shiny lure with jolting movements is just the ticket to reel them in

Overall, you have to decide what works for you the best What are you trying to accomplish during your trip? Are you fishing for sport, pleasure, both? Freshwater or saltwater? Big game fish or smaller, more common fish? All of these factors need to be considered, and you have to test the bait! It is best to throw variety in, especially when fishing for sport, because you ’ re much more likely to catch your trophy lunker if you are switching up your bait and techniques, along with your location Everyone likes to say that “the real thing” is way better, but some tried and true experts of the field have joined the lure team after noticing their benefits as well Can lures get the job done every single time? No, not always, but neither can live bait It’s all in the experience, patience, and lines of the fisherman

Predator to Prey
Whether you are looking to go hog hunting with your dogs or hike through the mountains in search of a billy, these dangerous hunts will surely send adrenaline surging through your veins Some animals are dangerous because of their skills, others simply because of where they live. Nevertheless, with patience and a good source of knowledge, you will be the only predator left standing!
FERAL HOGS
Feral hogs are not typically classified as game animals or predators, but they can be extremely dangerous, and therefore also fun to hunt Because of the recent expansion and “invasion” of the species, feral hogs are now usually marked for open season all year long. There are many available public and p r i v a t e l a n d s a l l o v e r t h e s t a t e s t o c h o o s e f r o m , whether you are looking for a guided hunt or a pe rs o n a l e x p e r i e n c e i n t h e w i l d e r n e s s E v e n w i t h a guide and all of the proper training and equipment, feral hogs can still cause major injuries, so always make sure you are as prepared as you possibly can be These wild pigs can be hunted during all hours of the day and night, without restriction, so it is up to your personal preferences when planning a trip

COYOTES
Coyotes are native to most of North America but are often spotted more frequently in the north and northwest parts of the United States Coyotes have some of the best hearing and eyesight, and as predators, they will naturally hide and stalk, rather than just roaming around in the open The best way to take a coyote is to find a secluded area at the edge of a clearing or in the bushes, even up in the trees works From there, you’ll have to wait it out
Make sure you are using some sort of a scent mask, and being downwind will help carry whatever detectable scent you have on you, away from the direc-
tion of your line of sight Hunting these predators in the summertime, and even in early spring, is best, because they will be moving quite a bit for mating and breeding seasons Coyotes are very smart, and highly aware of their surroundings, so even if they’re looking for a mate, don’t think that they will be so easily distracted
Rifles are usually the weapon of choice because of their easy modifications and scope add-ons, but check with your area to make sure there aren’t any restrictions before you begin your hunt A simple deer rifle is more than capable of taking down a coyote, as long as you are patient and swift

T h e e l u s i v e m o u n t a i n g o a t i s q u i t e d a n g e r o u s t o hunt No, you will not get attacked by a “killer billy ” The danger lies within the terrain they inhabit These long drops, ravines, steep cliffs, and sharp edges that spread over the mountainous lands are what make h u n t i n g t h e g o a t s s o c h a l l e n g i n g . O n c e y o u h a v e g o t t e n y o u r l i c e n s e, t a g s , a n d r eserved your trip, you will need all of the proper gear T h e l i s t c a n b e f a i r l y l o n g , d e p e n d i n g o n i n d i v i d u a l requirements, but for the most part, some lightweight clothing and basic rock climbing safety gear will do Your weapon of choice is up to you, because you will be the one lugging it along, but guidelines must still be met To arrive at your hunting destination well prepared, you will want to brush up on basic knowledge of the area, and if you are taking a guided hunt, the specialists will most likely have you go through an in-
structional course before heading out
The most important thing to remember before taking your billy once you have him in sight, will be where he is going to drop The last thing you want is your trophy falling into a deep ravine Use your binoculars, scopes, or whatever optics you choose, to spot the goat and then survey the land surrounding your potential kill If you shoot and miss, you may not have another chance, but if you shoot and drop the goat into an inaccessible area, you may as well have not t aken the shot at all Check your anchors and mechanisms for hoisting the goat once you ’ ve taken him down, and don’t let your excitement get in the way of common sense Safety first!
Again, be sure to stay up to date on changing wildlife and weaponry regulations, and never take an animal that is out of season Hogs may be unlimited and considered varmints in most states, but every area has its own rules, and it does not hurt to double check It is definitely better to be safe than sorry, otherwise you will have hunted for nothing and have nothing to show for it but a fine Coyotes and mountain goats will be a bit harder to take, but extremely rewarding Patience and diligence is the key!

Being diagnosed with Graves Disease in 1998 put an obstacle in Amanda Lynn Mayhew’s trajectory of life Graves Disease is an auto-immune disorder that takes over your body and throws your thyroid into a state of major malfunction. It took six years of radiation and treatment to stabilize Meanwhile, she learned to cope, raise three boys as a single mom, pound the iron at the gym, and still be able to get outdoors
She focused on being outdoors with her boys as much as possible, and developed her knowledge of firearms, hunting, and fishing. With the boys getting older, this was a lifestyle they could all truly enjoy together
Fitness played a huge role in Amanda Lynn’s life She was the sole provider and caregiver, therefore she had only herself to rely on to keep the kids safe during all of their outdoor adventures Shortly after discovering the Total Gym, Amanda's training regimen became firmly entrenched and a partnership was born This relationship with Total Gym inventors Tom and Joy Campanaro led to Amanda's involvement with Chuck Norris’ Kickstart Kids event down the road
Around the year 2000, Amanda Lynn moved to a rural location She directed her passion for fitness and her philanthropic voice to create awareness of rare illnesses by creating a fitness magazine This publication was free of advertisements and provided a sounding board for people of all levels of fitness The magazine engaged readers to share personal fitness goals and achievements with each other It was filled with real-life stories, issues and people illustrating how anyone can achieve what they put their mind to, regardless of their personal challenges
be a part of a Women’s Panel at an Outdoors Show in Toronto, Ontario, and following a flood of positive feedback, her career in the outdoors was suddenly launched unexpectedly
With social media exploding, her connections with publicists and editors from all different readerships formed a link to the online audiences when she started posting about her moose or bear hunts Back in 2007, the thought of women in the hunting world was an obscure idea and even frowned upon in certain groups or areas People started to pay attention to this new female hunter In 2011, Amanda Lynn was asked to
Working behind the gun counter at Shooter's Choice gave Amanda Lynn an opportunity to share her passion for firearms and hunting knowledge with everyone, and this marked the beginning of women in the industry Noticing the increase of women coming with questions about firearms and hunting led Amanda Lynn to believe that there was something missing in the world of hunting An event was born in 2011 – Range Day – and is held at a local gun club where girls and women (aged 12 – 75) can come out and experience pistols, rifles, shotguns, and archery with no license This event features one-on-one mentoring in a non-intimidating environment, and also includes a gun-cleaning class rotation instructed by Amanda Lynn’s female colleague, Lesley

Over 800 women have initiated their hunting skills development and had first experiences on Range Day Many of these women have gained confidence to move forward to successfully obtain their firearms and/or hunting licenses With Range Day limited to 2-4 times per year and always sold out quickly, Amanda Lynn knew she found what the industry was missing
Feedback from participants such as this fueled her ambition: “I just wanted to say thanks for having the range days A couple of years ago I was told by a fairly well known bow shop that I wouldn’t be able to shoot a bow because I am blind in one eye So I went to another establishment and spent hours with a very nice representative that set me up with a Bowtech, and I have been shooting that ever since I was nervous about range day because of that issue even though I have shot guns before, the members you have helping at range day were encouraging It meant the world to me to have everyone treat us all with respect and like we were equals. They took the time

Forming the Ontario Women’s Hunting Association was the next step in making hunting accessible for those who do not have anyone to go hunting with Amanda questioned, “If women don’t have someone to take them out, how are they going to learn?” With free memberships and email access, Amanda Lynn makes herself accessible to assist as best as she can Amanda Lynn has honed her skills far beyond the mere sport of the kill, and encourages this for all hunters “There is more to it than just packing up and getting out to harvest your animal,” Amanda says She engages in each stage of the hunt, including the cleaning, butchering and processing of her own game, as well as cooking it The OWHA website is the ideal platform to share information about these uncommon activities for those who want to take it one step further.
Amanda Lynn has been partnering up with companies and brands like Cabela’s, Weatherby, Polaris, Bear Archery, Easton Archery, Camillus and 5.11 Tactical to further share knowledge.

Organizing all of this and still having time to hunt has filled Amanda Lynn’s calendar and put her in the spotlight in this male-dominated industry Using all of her knowledge and experience on stage, she has been busy presenting in seminars and at conferences across Canada Speaking on everything from bear hunting, firearms and fitness, to the importance of women in the trade, her public presence has sent Amanda Lynn rocketing through the industry to become one of the most familiar faces of hunting

Our military branches are always ready to stand guard and protect us as a nation We often take for granted all that they do, from investing time into training sessions and tours, to literally giving their lives for the sake of our freedom Ifyou would like to support our military members and show them that they are loved and appreciated, here are a few things you can do to show thatyou care.
Volunteer
Volunteering is a great way to help service members. As of 2016, just over 4% of all of our military veterans are out of work or retired and unemployed with no means of financial survival. While this is down from the recent near 6%, it is still a big number, and we should be doing what we can to help our service members find jobs and support systems in their local areas. These veterans mostly rely on tricky support from governmental and charitable organizations. While these programs can and do help a good portion of the unemployed members, they are not always able to do as much as they’d like for everyone.
Most of these organizations, such as the ones that help in job placement, are solely run on volunteer time and community contributions, both in labor and financial aspects. Give back to your local community organization that handles job placement and veteran benefits, and volunteer your time They may have you sorting through applications and open position files, or they may simply ask you to stamp all of the outgoing mail No volunteer position is unimportant or too small to provide your services, especially when you’re serving those who have protected your freedom and your rights.

Support Families
Even if you may not be able to directly suppor to a service member, you can still give back families. There are always local hotlines and bring light and guidance to those families who may be suffering from the loss of a loved one You can join a group or volunteer to participate during their meetings, and offer up your confidence whenever they feel like they need to speak to someone
Give to Charities
If the family has not lost their service member, they still may be dealing with depression and anxiety because of long term separation, and these families could really use support – even more importantly, a friend Do you know someone in your community who currently has a spouse, child, or other family member that is serving in a military branch? If so, shine a little light on them next time you see them, and let them know that you ’ re appreciative Do you have a neighbor who may be in the same boat? Make them a treat and take it on over, or drop in and invite them to a
There are also charities that specifically handle unemployment and “welcome home” aspects, so choose the one that you would like to help, and go from there
Remember to always offer a helping hand to those in need, as it is a vital relationship that we must maintain as a nation in order to function fluidly and happily From sending entire packages, to making a small contribution each month, every little bit counts Remember to thank a service member if you see them on the street, and never let them forget that their services will not go unnoticed We must show our military that we are thankful for them, and that we support them, even through disagreements and hard times; they are still human, and they deserve to know they’re appreciated

SURVIVAL and Safety
Animal Encounters
Most bears are simply curious, if anything, but with attacks on the rise, they have been labeled as extremely dangerous.
Animal encounters are relatively rare, but when they attack, the result can be brutal – possibly fatal It is a situation that many of us never prepare for , because it just doesn’t come to mind We never think that, while we ’ re hiking a trail in the woods, a cougar will jump out at us We never plan for the day when a bear decides to chase us down
Statistically, outdoor enthusiasts are more likely to get lost or fall into a ravine than they are to be attacked by a wild animal Therefore, it is understandable that the thought of an attack rarely ever comes up. However , ifyou plan ahead, you ’ re always prepared for the worst – and the unthinkable – which gives you the ultimate advantage From bears to wolves, you’ll learn what to do (and what not to do!) ifyou ever cross paths These preparations will allow you to enjoy nature’s wild and wonderful world without worry, shouldyou ever find yourself face to face with one of these dangerous animals
BEARS
Most bears are simply curious, if anything, but with attacks on the rise, they have been labeled as extremely dangerous If you see a bear and the bear does not see you, turn around and go back, or circle around the bear with as much distance you can get between the two of you If the bear notices you, or sees you before you see it, then it may stand up on its hind legs and “peek” at you This is the curiosity getting the best of the bear, and you should not be alarmed Raise your arms up and make yourself taller You can use whatever you have on your person or around you to help do this, such as lifting your pack over your head or waving sticks around Often times, the bear will step down and retreat
Bears are dangerous animals, but the younger ones are usually more aggressive, so if a bear charges you, this is most likely the reason Many times, a bear will charge to challenge you, which means they’ll get very close and then turn suddenly, leaving you in the clear If a bear starts to charge, DO NOT RUN Running will trigger their predatory instinct and they will chase after you; it wouldn’t matter if you were captain of the track team, there is no outrunning a bear Instead, stay as calm as possible, and speak in low tones, wave your arms, make big movements with your limbs, and show the bear that you ’ re standing your ground The bear will most likely stop and turn around
If the bear continues to charge and actually makes contact with you, fight! Use whatever you can to hit the bear and try to get it off of you Keep in mind, if you ’ re struggling for a few moments and the bear is continuously attacking, your best bet (and last resort) is to use the old “playing dead” trick Most bears will stop attacking something once it’s no longer moving, as this tells the bear that there is no more threat Cover your head with your hands and remain in a fetal position to protect yourself
“ “
COUGARS
Also known as the mountain lion, panther, and puma, cougars are highly instinctive predators with a keen eye and sense of smell If you come into contact with one of these wildcats, you definitely do not want to run away or back down If you ’ re a hiker and you don’t carry a walking stick, get one immediately Walking sticks are good for warding off these animals, as well as other wildlife, so they double as a hiking aide and as a weapon
If you see a cougar, assume that it has definitely already seen you Chances are, if the cougar has seen you and has not run off, its predatory nature is kicking in You should always be aware of your surroundings, but it is especially important that once you make eye contact with the cougar, you do NOT break it Stare the cougar down intensely and make noise Wave your arms, just as you would with a bear, and make yourself bigger.
Standing your ground against a cougar is highly important, and could make or break a positive outcome Sudden movements are not suggested, but wide motions and possibly even throwing something on your person at the cougar is okay Don’t ever bend down or turn your back to look for something while in contact with a cougar They may think you ’ re submitting and will pounce While you ’ re making noise and standing up for yourself, back away slowly to create distance Most wildcats will walk away at this point
“Wolves take direct eye contact as a challenge, and they will fight back if threatened.”
WOLVES
Contrary to the cougar, you do NOT want to make direct eye contact with a wolf if you are approached by one Wolves take direct eye contact as a challenge, and they will fight back if threatened Instead, keep your eye on the wolf indirectly and try your best to distance yourself If the wolf continues to step forward, clap loudly and make noise while raising your backpack or your jacket over your head to create height Don’t show your teeth or snarl and make animal noises at the wolf This type of behavior will only further trigger their instinct to fight
A wolf can sense when you ’ re scared, so try to be as scary as possible when fighting them off Throw things and yell, but do NOT turn your back on the wolf If there is more than one, and you ’ re being surrounded by a pack, look for a weapon or use your walking stick to beat them across the nose It is important that your back is never an open target, so backing yourself up against a tree for leverage is a good idea. If there is something nearby that you can get to and easily climb, then go Making yourself both unavailable and scary is your best bet to making a wolf back down
When navigating the outdoors, it is best to travel in groups of two or more If you are out in the wilderness alone, you are an easier target Carry a walking stick and some sort of weapon, like a knife, on you at all times while in the woods You can also purchase deterrents, such as pepper spray, whistles, or other weapons that may aidyou if one of these situations ever arises Stay alert, stay prepared, and stay safe!

AO: How did the idea and concept for Expedition Unknown come about? Did it turn out to be more than you ever expected?
J G : The idea came about really naturally, actually Before this, I was hosting a show for Syfy called Destination Truth which was much more ‘ooga-booga,’ as they say I was traveling the world investigating stories of cryptozoological creatures and unexplained phenomenon My role was an open-minded skeptic, and even though I was pretty sure we weren’t going to find ‘Creature X’ every week, it was an absolute blast But, the more I explored different cultures, the more I realized just how many fascinating archaeological and historic mysteries are out there I became fascinated by thrilling legends of lost cities, buried pirate treasure, undiscovered tombs, and the fate of vanished explorers I have a degree in archaeology, and I first fell in love with traveling because of these kinds of stories Suddenly, I just felt home This was what I wanted to make a show about
AO: Can you name an experience in which you felt the most comfortable around a completely foreign culture? What made the experience welcoming and memorable? What are some things you learned from these people?
J G : The very first episode of Expedition Unknown was filmed in Cambodia We were exploring a previously lost city of an Ankorian king that archaeologists had just uncovered in the jungles using aerial laser scanners or LiDAR The site was remote, and at the end of the day, we sent most of the crew back down the mountain before dark, while my cameraman Evan and I stayed back to film for a few hours We ended up getting caught in a terrible storm, and the dirt paths out of the jungle became totally impassable A few of the locals invited us to stay in their village, so we hopped on the backs of their motorbikes and traveled through the rain and lightning to a cluster of simple huts These jungles are still riddled with landmines, and some of the villagers are former Khmer Rouge – not exactly on the right side of history But we gathered on a porch while the rain poured down and drank a crate of warm beer by the light of a single candle We shared a few stories, we laughed our asses off, and Evan and I were offered a dry place to sleep In the morning, we slurped down soup cooked by an old woman who invited us to sit down by her stove I have no idea what was in it, but it did wonders for my hangover What a night
“The biggest thing I’ve learned in all my travels is that people everywhere are proud of their own culture, and they want to share it. The key is to be genuinely interested in listening. If you can do that – you can make friends anywhere.”

AO: What is your outlook on travel in general? Is it something everyone should do as much as possible?
J G : I see travel as vital I think in America we ’ ve come to think of travel and vacation as the same thing, and that’s a mistake I’m all for vacationing, but travel is something that should challenge us I’m a firm believer that not all travel should be easy or even fun I think it’s important that people put themselves out there and get into environments that are unfamiliar and even a little scary That’s where we learn – not just about another place, but about ourselves In Europe, aristocratic youths used to undertake “The Grand Tour,” to visit the great landmarks of antiquity It was designed not just for young people to party or sightsee, but to study our broader, collective history I always tell people to look for challenging travel opportunities that are both fun and, on some level, a real education
AO: What advice would you give to beginners who are planning to travel out of the USA for the very first time? If you could plan a trip for them, where would you send them and why?
JG: A lot of people say to me, “I wish I could travel to exciting places like you do ” The fact is, you can Travel is like any other goal You have to plan, save, and make it a priority, or it doesn’t happen We live in the greatest time in history for traveling – long haul flights can connect almost any major city on earth, and seasonal airfare sales, direct booking deals, and things like home share sites have made travel more affordable than ever The internet is also a near-bottomless well of travel information, userreviewed experiences, and expert advice, that, with a little research, anyone can leverage to become an expert on a destination
My advice for first time adventure-travelers is to start with a place that’s challenging, but also accessible I love the Yucatan Cancun is an easy place to fly to and just a few hours west of all those resorts are jaw-dropping Mayan ruins, uncharted jungles, and otherworldly flooded caverns Nearly everyone speaks English, and if you get too banged up you can always retreat to the coast and sip a margarita by the pool Further afield, I love Thailand Sure, it’s overrun with backpackers, but it’s still stunning, the people are delightful, and it feels a million miles from home Best of all, it’s cheap and has enough tourist infrastructure to get you started with plenty of opportunities to do your own thing
AO: Expedition Unknown is unlike any other travel series, in that you embark on a quest, seeking answers to unsolved historical mysteries, as well as investigating new discoveries. Is there a mystery you haven’t explored yet that you would like to?
J G : So many I think when we started the show we wondered, “will there be enough mysteries to keep this going?” But as we travel to each location, we learn about legends and tantalizing artifacts we ’ ve never heard of before Amazingly, the more I travel, the longer my bucket list gets
90 | Summer 2017 | Adventure Outdoors
“The only thing harder than searching for the world’s greatest lost relics is sitting down and staring at a blank page of paper.”
AO: You’re also a writer. In your book, Memoirs of a Monster Hunter, you take fans behind the scenes of your Syfy series, Destination Truth. Do you have plans to write a new book in correlation to Expedition Unknown? Are there any other books in the works?
J G : I loved the experience of writing my first book, and it was also a huge challenge The only thing harder than searching for the world’s greatest lost relics is sitting down and staring at a blank page of paper But I’ve been scribbling in lots of journals, and I hope to turn those ramblings into another book soon That is, if I can decipher my own handwriting
AO: You spend quite a bit of time in many different airports to reach your desired destination What’s the best thing about airports? What’s the worst?
J G : I love airports I really do I think of them as space-stations –these little outposts that link travelers coming and going to all corners of the known world Journeys are beginning and ending, and there’s just something really romantic to me about these microcosmic terminals The worst thing about airports is how utilitarian they’ve become Airports should be temples to imagination and adventure, not bus stations with fast food My wife and I considered getting married at the stunning TWA terminal at JFK They don’t build them like that anymore Here in the States, I love being stuck in O’Hare, especially at night They keep the highdomed concourses dimly lit, and you can wander under the shadow of a dinosaur from the Field Museum before sitting down for sushi at Wicker Park or riding the moving walkways through
that weird neon tunnel Internationally, I love Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok, which is like being aboard the Battlestar Galactica, but with way more massage opportunities.
AO: Name three unique essentials you never travel without Why are they so important/significant to you?
J G : 1 A Moleskin journal and a Parker click-pen Everyone is obsessed with photos (myself included), but if you can jot down an entry in a journal, it’s so much more meaningful to look back on I find that reading something I’ve written floods back so many more memories than just looking at a picture It helps me to really return to that place and time
2 A good book I never make time to read anymore unless I’m on a long flight or posted up in a hotel I try to carry something related to the place I’m traveling Dark Star Safari while traveling overland in Africa Moby Dick while lounging on a beach in Hawaii Agatha Christie for a long train ride If I can get wrapped up in a novel during my trip, I start to feel like I’m becoming one of the characters
3 My necklace Eagle-eyed viewers will notice I’ve worn the same necklace in every episode on TV that I’ve ever made People think it’s a compass, but it’s really a sundial The hinged mechanism has long rusted shut, and the writing on the back is nearly illegible It’s an important totem for me, though A touchstone for all of the great opportunities I’ve had to experience the world, and a reminder that time is always marching forward – best to make the most of it
JG
“We’re just about to set off on our 4th season. It ’s going to be our biggest and boldest yet.”
AO: To date, what has been the most challenging mystery/discovery that you’ve uncovered? Was it/will it ever be solved?
JG: We recently undertook an expedition to investigate the Ark of the Covenant It’s the most iconic religious relic of all time, and I’m just one in a long line of adventurers who’ve gone looking for it (including my cinematic hero) I fretted that we might not be able to bring anything new to the quest, but we managed to explore a never-before filmed tunnel beneath the old city of Jerusalem where we discovered the signature of a famed 19th century explorer who wedged himself there a century and a half ago We also performed the first-ever metal analysis of holy implements that purportedly traveled to Ethiopia with the Ark As to whether anyone will ever find the actual Ark itself, perhaps Indiana Jones’ sidekick Sallah put it best: “ it is something that man was not meant to disturb It is not of this Earth ”
AO: Assuming you eat while you’re journeying through exotic locations, what food have you eaten that was the most peculiar, yet delicious? What’s the worst thing you’ve ever tried?
J G : Akutaq is a kind of ice cream made from moose fat by native peoples in Alaska It’s way better than it sounds I’ve eaten just about everything from rotted shark meat (Iceland, horrible) to fried spiders (Cambodia, also awful) to a shot of whiskey with a human toe in it (Yukon, not bad) The bartender insists that the toe has to touch your lips in order for it to count Be careful though, there’s a stiff fine for swallowing the toe
AO: Was there ever a time where you felt you were in real danger during an expedition? What happened, and what did you learn from it?
J G : Oh, sure More than a few times I had part of an icewall collapse near me on a rappel in Siberia, dove in lethal, mud-black water in Myanmar searching for a missing golden bell, spent the night in the radioactive ruins of Chernobyl and nearly died in a hut in Namibia from a fever I’ve learned two things: situational awareness is really important, and also fate is ultimately out of your hands
AO: What’s the most rewarding thing about traveling all over the world? What is the hardest part about being away all the time? Do the pros outweigh the cons?
JG
J G : The most rewarding thing isn’t just that I have the opportunity to visit incredible historic sites and explore incredible legends, it’s that I get to share those stories with our viewers at home and invite them to be a part of the adventure Traveling is storytelling, and I love being able to receive and recommunicate those stories The hardest part is being away from my family As a new Dad, saying goodbye to my son is the hardest thing I’ve ever done Nothing outweighs that, but life is about balancing challenges and opportunities I can’t wait for the day when I take him along with me on an expedition
AO: Do you have any keepsakes that you collect from your travels?
J G : I have an office that’s brimming with all sorts of odd artifacts and tchotchkes. I’ve got masks from Nepal, a ‘cursed’ doll from Mexico (my wife would like that in the garage), spears gifted from African chiefs, and even some propaganda comic books from Cuba I probably bring home too many things, but each one helps tell a story
AO: Have you ever received anything while traveling, whether as a gift or simply found, that you consider to be priceless?
J G : It’s not an object it’s the trust of strangers When someone from a tribe agrees to tell me a sacred story, when a priest agrees to show me shards of what he believes are from the true cross of Jesus, when an archaeologist shares a new find with us deep in the jungle, there’s a delicate trust – that this folklore and these objects will be respected and shared with the utmost of care That knowledge and passion, nothing is more priceless than that
AO: What can we expect from you and Expedition Unknown in the future? Are their plenty more places on your exploration list?
JG: We’re just about to set off on our 4th season It’s going to be our biggest and boldest yet In my crosshairs for 2017: unexplored Mayan ruins in Guatemala, the legend of a hidden library in Ecuador, scientists looking for microbial alien life on Mars, lost Viking settlements that could rewrite U S history, Russian treasures, Egyptian relics and new Dead Sea Scrolls in the Holy Land In fact, if you’ll excuse me, I really need to get packing!

[This summer, you’re encouraged to enjoy the simplicity of nature’s surroundings, whether you’re diving into a cool body of water, or heading uphill for the hike of your life. Embrace the soft summer breeze, warm yourself up in the sunlight, and peer into the deepest, bluest waters you can find Relish in every color and shape as you take in the sights and sounds of the wild. There’s nothing more satisfying for an outdoor enthusiast than being able to bask in the glory of the natural world without a worry on the brain.
From paragliding on the land to canoeing down a river, these outdoor expeditions will get your heart racing, your blood pumping, and your mind wandering away from all of the stressors of daily life. Immerse yourself in the thickest forest, the widest river, and the highest mountain top; your body and mind will thank you for it.

and the guides will often tow you for a launch
Paragliding is often confused with hang gliding, which is a similar sport, but not quite as simple.
“ “
For our first summer land expedition, we ’ re going to go paragliding Paragliding is often confused with hang gliding, which is a similar sport, but not quite as simple Paragliding equipment can be packed up into one backpack, and can be easily carried while on a hike or a camping trip, especially if you ’ re in the mountains at higher elevation. Hang gliders are heavier, and their wings are not foldable, which makes transport of the mechanism much more difficult With paragliding, the wing is fabric, much like a parachute, so the entire thing can be rolled up and folded into a hiker’s pack
Depending on the altitude and the area, a paragliding adventure can last all day The paraglider may not have an engine (also a similarity with hang gliders), but it will cover a lot of distance once in flight There is an unmatchable freedom to be felt when paragliding The pilot – you! –is attached to a harness that is clipped to the fabric wing Once you take off, usually by foot at a higher altitude, you will be fighting gravity and steering with your body You can also take a guided paragliding trip, which is highly recommended if this is your first experience,
If you ’ re up for the challenge, take a crash course on paragliding and head out to Red Rock Country Red Rock Country is located in Sedona, Arizona, and is near the Coconino National Forest. Locals call the Oak Creek Canyon the “centerpiece” of Red Rock Country, which is a scenic river gorge that is also known as the Grand Canyon’s little sister Oak Creek Canyon brings in thousands of visitors each year, and comes in second only to the Grand Canyon itself Take a paragliding excursion in Red Rock Country and make time to view the wildlife and amazing rock formations that make this area so majestic
If you aren’t up for the open air beneath your feet, try biking. Biking in the summertime is one of the most popular activities for outdoor enthusiasts because of its intensity levels and wide open range of spaces to visit You can bike along beaches, through the rugged terrain of high-altitude forests, or on established trails in state and national parks all over the country

If you are a beginner, start small with a leisure ride on an established trail.
If you are a beginner, start small with a leisure ride on an established trail You will need basic equipment and a decent bike, but if you are visiting an area with popular biking trails, you will be able to rent your equipment, instead of having to travel with it Make sure your rental includes a helmet, or bring your own You want to be safe, especially when traveling on backcountry trails that are made of dirt and gravel
Experienced bikers/cyclists will want to opt for a more challenging trail that includes dips and jumps, such as the Skyline Wilderness Park Trails in California Trails at the Wilderness Park offer up something for every rider, from easy terrain with great views, to rough mountain biking turf California is a great option for getting the best of both worlds when it comes to wildlife and landscape Enjoy the mountains and the vast, open views while you bike along the trails

Take your time, get a feel for the land, and don’t underestimate your attire It is important to dress appropriately when going for a long ride, as you will be performing a moderate to high-endurance physical activity and may or may not come into contact with plants, animals, and other outdoor factors
Always wear a helmet and protective gear, such as knee and elbow pads Drink plenty of water, also! It is best to go with a group of two or more people, even if you are an experienced cyclist The “buddy system” is highly encouraged, and if you are biking off the beaten path or in a park with known predatory wildlife, it is best to stay on guard and bring protection Make sure you check with wildlife management and park websites before you head to the area of your choice, to ensure that your gear is approved

Hiking is another great outdoor activity to do during the summer season Much like biking, there are different levels of intensity The levels range from a Class One to a Class Three Class One is defined as easy hiking on an established trail, where most of the terrain is flat and smooth, if not paved Regular clothes fit for an outing are fine for Class One
Class Two is a medium level of hiking, where you can expect rougher terrain with the need to use your hands for balance and pulling yourself up in some areas You will need a good pair of hiking boots for this class
Class Three, as you can expect, is strenuous hiking that incorporates some moderate climbing into the trail, as well This means you could be scrambling up and down cliffs, jumping over rough divots, and pulling yourself up through foliage This type of hiking requires good boots, a walking stick, and some basic climbing equipment

Make a laminated hard copy of the area map for yourself to keep in your pack.
Depending on your experience, you may classify yourself accordingly and set out for a fun summertime hike this season If you are just starting out, you’ll be a Class One, and you will want to stick to established trails If you are fairly physically active and you would like to try Class Two but have never been on that type of trail, then you will want to invest in some hiking boots and probably a guide Guides come in handy when trying out new activities, especially when you are in an unfamiliar area
Be sure to always take a friend with you or hike in a group if you aren’t going to be with a guide Make a laminated hard copy of the area map for yourself to keep in your pack. Bring basic survival gear along with you as well, such as a compass and a fire starting kit When you are out in the wilderness, whether you are just going for a day hike or a leisure walk for a few hours, it is always better to be safe than sorry

The views are ancient The experiences are all brand new.
Standing at 5,946 feet above sea level more than a mile Grandfather Mountain has been celebrating and sharing the wonders of the natural world since 1952
Summer is one of the most ideal times to visit Grandfather Mountain, as temperatures at the world-famous Mile High Swinging Bridge are typically 10 degrees cooler than those at the base of the mountain, which are at least 10 degrees cooler than in the flatlands
The bridge America’s highest suspension footbridge spans an 80-foot chasm at more than one mile in elevation, offering panoramic views of breathtaking vistas
Throughout the park, guests are likely to spot squirrels, songbirds and other forest animals But what about the more elusive wildlife? It only takes a visit to the environmental wildlife habitats to come face to face with black bears, cougars, river otters, bald eagles and white-tailed deer
GRANDFATHERMOUNTAIN,NC
Unlike the exhibits found in many zoos that bring in plants and boulders to recreate an appropriate setting, these large enclosures were built around the animals’ actual native habitats, meaning they’re free to roam within as they please
To enhance the experience, the mountain’s staff of naturalists, rangers and habitat keepers host a variety of interactive programs, such as animal encounters, interpretive talks and hikes, a Junior Ranger program for kids, behind-the-scenes tours of the habitats and more
Grandfather also features access to 12 miles of hiking trails, a nature museum, documentary auditorium, restaurant, 100-plus picnic sites, fudge shop, special events and more
Grandfather Mountain is located at 2050 Blowing Rock Highway (U S 221) in Linville, NC, just one mile from milepost 305 on the Blue Ridge Parkway For more information, including a schedule of events, call (800) 468-7325 or visit wwwgrandfathercom

Jet skiing is an adrenaline rush, so if you ’ re an outdoor enthusiast looking for a thrill, this is the activity for you Jet skis refer to any small personal watercraft, and can hold one to two people, similar to a motorcycle The actual watercraft was first brought to the consumer market in the 1970s, and by the 1980s, jet skiing was a popular sport and the watercrafts themselves were being sold all ov er
Florida is one of the best places to go if you are willing to try out the sport Jet ski rentals are nearly everywhere along the coast, and Florida has over 1,800 miles of coastline to roam There are also almost 8,000 lakes in Florida, so if you would rather jet through freshwater, that is always an option
Head to Tampa Bay for a day on the water “Tampa Bay is Florida’s largest open water estuar y, ” says Tampa Chamber of Commerce Because it is such a wide bay
WaTeR AdVeNtUrEs
and has lots of activity at all times, such as ships coming and going, the wakes are large and the winds are strong The wide open area of the bay allows for jet skis to reach top speeds safely, which is a plus for experienced riders that like to do tricks on the water If you are unfamiliar with jet skis, you can rent one and take it out for yourself after brief instruction, or go with a guide if that makes you more comfortable Jet skiing is a very popular activity in Florida, and around the country during the summer, so if you haven’t tried it, now is the time!
Can’t make it to Florida? That’s ok Because these personal watercrafts can be driven in practically any body of water, you can try jet skiing anywhere, including Texas! Texas’ gulf coast has plenty of beach areas to enjoy a ride on, and rentals are scattered about the beaches just as they would be in Florida

The art of sailing is majestic in and of itself and there is something exciting and yet calming about being on a sailboat in the open water.
Be sure to check regulations before testing unfamiliar waters with your own jet ski You don’t want to reach your destination and find out that you aren’t complying with the rules of the area Most states will require that all persons on the watercraft are wearing flotation devices and that the watercrafts are registered Reckless driving is applicable to these personal watercrafts so be courteous to oth ers sharing the water aro you, and never weave through other boats o people
Another activity worth trying in the summer is sailing The art of sailing is majestic in and of itself, and there is something exciting and yet calming about being on a sailboat in the ope water However, although sailing provides a p form for nostalgia, the boat must still succumb reality of the wind and waves With this being said, it is very important that you do not just jump onto a sailboat without training and basic knowledge
WaTeR AdVeNtUrEs
ters usually last for a full day, and luxury charters will include meals and drinks If you ’ re taking a “bareboat” charter, be prepared to man the vessel yourself, as your boat will come with no captain or crew In other words, you ’ re renting a sailboat and doing the rest yourself, which is not feasible for first-timers
ce you learn how to steer through the sails and set p your own deck, you will be able to sail by yourself f you ’ re looking for a smaller, more recreational sailboat, try a dinghy With a dinghy, you will be able to learn the basics much better than if you were on a larger boat Sailing can become quite addicting, as many beginners end up traveling the world in heir sailboats after years of experience and techue-mastering
If it is your first time sailing, you will want to take a charter, where you can be guided and looked after by a trained sailor that will show you the ropes – literally! Make sure you pack sunscreen and wear a hat, as you will be on the water all day Sailing char-
Whether you ’ re wanting to take a charter into foreign waters or sail on the shoreline for practice, sailing takes dedication and strength, but is well worth it all once you hone your skills Plan your next sailing charter by visiting the regulation site of your preferred area, and ask for recommendations via their outlets Make sure you take a course on sailing if you plan on manning your own boat, and always practice safe sailing on open water

4,600-foot elevation means the average daytime temperature is about 74 degrees, offering a cool respite from summer ’ s heat and a delightful escape from winter’s chill
Long before Arizona was a state, Sierra Vista was a hunting ground for early nomads Fossilized artifacts date Sierra Vista’s first tourists to around 13,000 BC As the eras melted into history, Arizona’s jungle environment gave way to today’s warm, dry climate Today, Sierra Vista’s sky islands, high canyons, and riparian areas are reminiscent of the ancient tropics and are welcome habitat for the 250 species of migrating and nesting birds
A hike into the Huachucas passing through as many as five climate zones, discovering petroglyphs and pictographs, and hearing a symphony of bird calls makes for an almost other-worldly trek
Since 1877, the U S Army’s adjacent Fort Huachuca has brought soldiers from all walks of life to Sierra Vista, and with them came a penchant for world cuisine Have a hankering for spicy kimchee, authentic Italian, or ocean-fresh sushi? You’ll find it in Sierra Vista German fare called the best in the state tempts your taste buds, along with hand-crafted breads and pastries baked in Old World traditions
