MOAB RIM

Forget everything you thought you knew about trail riding The Moab Rim is about to school you, big time Located in Utah, the Moab Rim Trail is where the craziest riders like to go to test their skills Giant arches, echoing canyons, and mesmerizing rock formations can be seen in all directions, and the Colorado River is just the pretty bow on top that we were looking for

Moab Rim can be spotted from town, and its ominous cliff has ruined many vehicles without hesitation Break into Devils Crack and climb the slickrock, loaded with tricky turns and tight corners Watch that your wheels don’t get stuck – this is for experienced riders only If you can manage to get through the first mile, you ’ ve already come along way, as most don’t maneuver through the broken rock and dirt that meets them at the head It is recommended that you don’t try to take on this portion of the trail system alone Leave time to get a spotter and prepare yourself for one hell of an obstacle course They don’t refer to Moab Rim as “vicious” for no reason

MERICA’S Greatest Outdoorsmen A

From the crazy tales of Ernest Hemingway, to the international celebrity known as Buffalo Bill, these men are the exact measure of greatness that a legacy requires Explore the lives of these true outdoor legends, and what they did to earn their spot on our list of America’s greatest outdoorsmen

ERNEST HEMINGWAY

Ernest Hemingway is the definition of the ultimate badass He was a writer, a journalist, an avid outdoorsman, a hunter, a fisherman, and a boxer, among many other things Hemingway is best known for his works of American fiction, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, and For Whom the Bell Tolls Hemingway learned early on from his father how to hunt, fish, and camp, and he and the wilderness were inseparable From battling giant Marlins in Bi-

mini, to stalking big game on African safaris, the Great Hem, or “Big Papa,” was always outdoors – that is, when he wasn’t writing, of course

Africa was perhaps his most beloved destination He enjoyed the land, and couldn’t get enough of the thrill of big-game hunting His shares his experiences in several of his works, including The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Green Hills of Africa Hemingway became a

legend, a man ’ s man, and nothing could take him down – he survived not one, but two plane crashes! He also survived malaria, skin cancer, hepatitis, diabetes, and high blood pressure, all of which failed to end Hemingway’s journeys The only thing that could end him was himself After a long battle with mental health issues, among his others, Hemingway took his own life with his favorite shotgun in the summer of 1961 He was 62 years old

JOHN “GRIZZLY” ADAMS

Known also as “California’s Greatest Mountain Man,”

John Grizzly Adams was a famous trainer of grizzly bears – no kidding Adams had a unique ability that allowed him to understand and connect with nature in its purest form His love for the land and the animals that roamed it made him a legend

He was only 21 years old when he nearly died at the claws of a tiger, and he almost gave his gift up right then and there After ranching, mining, and selling his kills off proved to be of no stable income, he was penniless He decided to take to

After realizing that this was extraordinary to others, he decided to take up an offer to put his animals in shows as performers In the 1850s, he would sell his animals to P T Barnum for a sum that

William Frederick Cody 1846-1917

would make his wife comfortable While performing in shows with Barnum, one of his bears struck Adams and reopened a wound from a previous injury he had sustained from a bear attack in the Sierras Finally, a monkey ended up reopening that same wound, and brain tissue was left exposed, hindering his ability to keep performing Still, even with the many animal injuries he suffered, it was a simple sickness that ended his life John Grizzly Adams proved to be the epitome of bravery and a true alpha male, for who else could live up to raising grizzlies like they were pets?

Zip-lining

Zip-lines, which were originally created as a means of transportation, have been around for over 200 years They were used to carry goods (and sometimes people) over rough and dangerous terrain Now, zip-lining has become a popular choice when adventurists are thinking of trying out a fresh pastime Zip-lining is a fairly new outdoor activity to the U.S., being that in 2001, there were only 10 or so zip-lines in America Today, there are well over 200 services and trails that offer zip-lining for all ages

Grab a guide and get going! With the accompaniment of the guides, you will know proper safety techniques, you will never be up in a tree on a platform unclipped, and you will have the time of your life speeding through the canopies like a bird, with the wind whipping around you

First time zip-liner? Break the ice in Rockbridge, Ohio, where Ziplining is a main attraction There are several well-known tours that will take you on a zip-line adventure for miles, and have you

zooming right alongside cliffs, over streams, and through mosscovered mountains, giving you the ultimate point of view for exploring Ohio’s wildlife.

Auburn-Opelika is the coolest college town in the South, according to us, and one of the top cities in America to live, according to CNN Easy to get to and easy to love, it’s a perfect choice for a weekend getaway in the great outdoors Load up the family bikes and check out Chewacla State Park With over 30 miles of versatile track, Chewacla offers world-class trail systems designed for both mountain biking beginners and seasoned pros. Located in the last foothills of the one-billion-year-old chain of Appalachian mountains, the network’s lower system is where you'll find some of the park's earliest

trails, with a decidedly rough and rugged feel geared towards the cross country crowd

The upper system features a variety of flow and gravity offerings, utilizing every inch of the park's 200 vertical feet of relief

It features a jump line with over 25 jumps and features, including a 20'X8' stepdown, numerous 20'+ doubles and tables, one of the best hips you'll find anywhere on the east coast, and a 35'

road gap That doesn't include the scores of other features found throughout the upper system, which utilizes quite a bit of lumber, as well as the final, rocky whispers of Appalachia before the region's transition towards a sandy coastal plain takes over And don’t miss the Great Wall of Chewacla and the Loch Ness Cobra nestled among the miles of well-groomed flow trails

We offer a suitable option for every age and skill level – you can even test out one of our pedal-less “strider” bikes for the little ones! Rentals are available for mountain biking as well as street riding

BEAT THEHeat

E X P E R T H Y D R A T I O N T I P S
“For us, being out in the heat of the summer season makes things a little different.”

Scorching temps are well on their way during this summer season Gear up and make sure you have everything you need to stay healthy and hydrated while enjoying all of your favorite activities!

1. Body Temp vs. Water Temp

Everyone has their own opinion when it comes to what temperature water should be at when you drink it For us, being out in the heat of the summer season makes things a little different During a regular workout, sure, you should be consuming nice, cold drinks to help regulate your body temperature as you start to heat up

However, if you know you ’ re going to be outside in the heat for a long period of time, it is best to avoid those ice-cold drinks While they may feel great going down, the icy temperature of cold water can actually constrict your stomach muscles, sending your body into a state of shock Drastic temperature changes aren’t good for your body, so make sure your water is cool enough to satisfy you, but not too cold overall

2. Not Thirsty? Drink Anyway!

Don’t wait until your mouth is dry and you ’ re dying of thirst to take a drink For every hour you ’ re outside, you should be consumi of water easily If plain old water n’t do it for you all day, reach fo drink or a vitamin-enriched wa extra goodies in each drink wil isfy your thirst and give you a me-up during the hottest of day

3. Carry A Water Bottl e 24/ Studies show that adults who bottles of water around with were much more likely to stay drated than those who inter tently stopped for beverag Stopping what you ’ re doing to a drink means you’ll be looking deeper satisfaction in the thir quenching department, and you be tempted to grab a soda or

coffee instead of a glass of water Studies also proved that those who drank water regularly throughout the day had little-to-no headaches, felt more alert and energetic, and had increased joint and skin health Not to mention, having a water bottle always on hand will help you accomplish tip number 2 with little effort

4. Moni tor Your Bathroom Breaks

Not sure if you ’ re staying hydrated? Check your urine Physicians recommend that your urine should have a slight yellow tint, but be mostly clear – this color range is a sign that your body is hydrated and healthy Darker yellow tints, to brownish urine in color, symbolized moderate to severe hydration So, if your urine is on the darker side, you should definitely be drinking more water on a regular basis If you notice that your urine is dark and this concerns you, do not try to guzzle down a gallon of water in an hour Relax, and increase your intake gradually throughout the day, and you’ll see immediate improvement during your next bathroom break

5. Eat Plenty of Fruits & Veggies

You don’t have to just drink water to maintain hydration When you ’ re out and about this summer, opt for bringing along some juicy fruit or have a big, salad for lunch Eating the proper is supposed to account for 20% of aily water intake, so keep this in mind me you reach for a burger Planning a in the sun, or a holiday barbecue? great! Add a fruit salad to the menu, our body will thank you in the long run tever you ’ ve got planned for this sumr, one thing is for sure: you need to y hydrated! It’s no fun when you have big day ahead of you, and you sudenly fall ill or fatigued due to dehydraion And worse yet, dehydration can ake a toll on you in the middle of your activities! By following these tips, you’ll ensure that your summer includes both, staying hydrated, and fun in the sun!

Mind-Blowing Fishing Adventures

TROPHY CATCHES FROM COAST TO COAST

Excuse yourself from whatever else the family has planned, and hang up your “Gone Fishing” sign It’s time to reel in some trophy catches, and these fishing destinations will leave you in awe (and probably a little sore) Whether you ’ re in search of a famous freshwater destination, or someplace in the depth of the sea, these hotspots have it all figured out We’re packed and ready Are you?

Saltwater

Texas

Kingfish are king in Texas! Galveston and Port Aransas are two extreme destinations in the state when looking for those trophy catches Kingfish, also known as king mackerel, are massive when compared to freshwater species They’ll most commonly weigh in at 10-30 pounds, but have been known to get as heavy as nearly 100 pounds! Go way offshore for the big ones, or stay close by for a moderatelysized trophy – your choice!

Adventure Outdoors | Summer 2018 | 85

Florida

We’re not in the Florida Keys for the drinks, folks Everyone heads to this hotspot for the summer tarpon Make no mistake about it, tarpon are plentiful in this area, but you’ll have to be skilled to reel one in Tarpon have been recorded at reaching a length of over 8 feet, and weighing nearly 400 pounds! Fighting with this massive fish is the whole point The fun is in the win, but you’ll most likely have to catch and release unless you have a special permit

“If you’re looking for the ultimate heavyweight flatfish, try your hand at reeling in some of Alaska’s finest: halibut.

Alaska

Goodbye, Keys Hello, Homer and Seward! If you ’ re looking for the ultimate heavyweight flatfish, try your hand at reeling in some of Alaska’s finest: halibut At birth, halibut are actually symmetrical It isn’t until later (around 6 months) that one eye migrates to the other side The top part of halibut are dark brown to act as a disguise under the surface, while the underbelly is white Records get set regularly with these giant fish One halibut was caught in 2013 that weighed in at 515 pounds! You’ll find more common trophies in the 100-pound range, but still, holy halibut! No literally, the word halibut translates to “holy flat fish ”

pro tip Use small live crabs as bait

Freshwater

Missouri

In search of a hot bass lake (see what we did there)?

Look no further than Table Rock Lake in Branson

This lake does not discriminate – there are plenty of bass to go around, from spotted to largemouth

With clear, calm water, it is no wonder why so many people want to get out on this lake for their chance to reel in a trophy Get into a kayak and sneak through the water as smoothly as possible, then let the sun work for you by casting shadows on your bait The rest is history

pro tip

Stick with live bait, or in a pinch, something small and natural-looking

Alaska

This state is great for a summer fishing trip because of its unique diversity and its gorgeous weather right now Fishing in the winter here is just plain impossible, at least for a trip like this, so it’s best to head out soon if your interest has peaked Get out on the Kobuk River

This river offers lake trout, arctic char, northern pike, sheefish, and more Sheefish are much bigger than the other fish listed here, so if you happen to run across one biting your line and you ’ re not prepared, well then, good luck

Sheefish are similar to the highly sought after halibut, only smaller Sheefish will fight to the death, and it is going to take some serious elbow grease to reel them in, but what’s better than fighting an uncommon trophy fish on an Alaskan river in the middle of summertime? Don’t worry, we’ll wait

“While smallmouths here are easy to catch and abundant, the fun is in in going after a muskie. ”

Michigan

Great Lakes, here’s your chance! Just north of Detroit, you’ll find people launching their boats into Lake Saint Clair This little lake connects to Lake Huron via the St Clair River, and to Lake Erie via the Detroit River It is famous for walleye, muskie, and smallies While smallmouths here are easy to catch and abundant, the fun is in going after a muskie Troll at a decent speed (510mph) and you’ll catch a fighter, no doubt Use large lures and spinners to catch a trophy muskie

If you come home with an actual trophy, or just play the catch-and-release game, you ’ ve still won, right? There’s no way you ’ re coming out of these destinations without feeling the burn Whether you ’ re reeling in smallmouths or docking with a hundred pounds of whitefish, you just simply can’t go wrong

Soldier Body Main t enance 101

Training, Stamina, and Nutrition Techniques

If you ’ re active-duty, we know you have a strict schedule, and a way-harder workout routine than the average Joe But if you ’ ve retired, or are just trying to maintain and improve your body and health overall, then we ’ ve got some tips from the experts to share Often overlooked because of the many diet fads stealing the spotlight, these common-knowledge steps will save you every time Welcome to the crashcourse!

Test Your Abilities

It is crucial that you challenge yourself on a regular basis The same old gym routine may help you keep off those few unwanted pounds, but it will do absolutely nothing for your core and your muscles By testing your abilities, you’ll keep your body at peak performance levels, all while maintaining what you ’ ve already worked so hard to achieve In the military, soldiers are required to run through a varying set of obstacles, whether that means they’re outside in the pouring rain at 0400 running drills, or practicing agility on balance beams This means when a friend asks you to take a new fitness class with them, do it Get out and try those activities that you ’ ve never done, or have maybe only tried once or twice Sure, we get it, yoga just isn’t your thing – try it anyway Keeping your muscles in shock and awake is what is going to help you surpass what you ’ ve already managed to maintain

Strength Training is Important

Obviously if you work in a hard labor position, or you ’ re constantly doing things that require a great deal of strength, then we don’t suspect that you need to be lifting weights For the rest of us who have all but given up on a regular routine, strength training is extremely important and should not be skipped over Resistance bands, free weights, home gyms, or even taking a jog with some heavy gear on are all things you can utilize to strengthen your muscles The more resistance there is, the more you ’ re actually doing with your muscle, and the stronger you will become

If your goal isn’t to get ripped, then don’t bother spending 4 hours a day training But it is recommended that 3 times a week, you get up and get moving, so be sure to incorporate strength training into your weekly exercise routine for maximum results

Enjoy Yourself Recap

Do not – we repeat, do NOT – run yourself ragged We’re all human, we all enjoy the good, fattening foods and the relaxing days spent doing absolutely nothing If you deny yourself these simple pleasures, you’ll fail in the long run Allowing yourself to indulge will keep your body in shape! By grabbing a “cheat meal” or spending the weekend on the couch, you’ll be resting your muscles, which gives them time to heal Therefore, when it’s time to hit the ground running again, your body will feel energized and ready to go, and you’ll get much more out of your regular workout than you would if you just ran through the motions all year long

• Crack down on your body’s expectations by incorporating new activities into your lifestyle – give your muscles a shock! You’ll build stamina, increase strength, and maintain your health by mixing things up on a regular basis

• Lift heavy things Use resistance bands Go the extra mile If you ’ re not strength training, then you ’ re not improving yourself

• Take a breather! Remember to relax and enjoy a bowl of pasta and a good movie Sometimes vegging out in front of the TV is just what the doctor ordered Give your body a break, and it will go to work even harder for you during the next workout

To get outdoors and really get dirty, you ’ ve got to have the body for it Make sure yours is in tip-top shape this season, so that you ’ re ready to take on whatever nature has the guts to throw at you!

Ever gone varmint hunting? Tried chasing down a wild boar? What about taking down a coyote or a bobcat? It’s time to test your skills against the 5 most satisfying summer hunts you’ll ever experience, so grab your gear and get going!

Varmint hunting is perfect for summer Varmints are unprotected species that can be hunted year round in most states These animals include but are not limited to: squirrels, prairie dogs, rabbits, feral hogs, woodchucks, and raccoons Regulations on these hunts only appear if you ’ re looking to hunt in a concurrent season Since every state has different rules, it is important that you check with your state’s hunting and wildlife websites

Varmint hunting is extremely exciting Take squirrels, for example These critters are small and fast, making the hunt challenging and quite enjoyable Many of us think whitetails when we hear the word “hunt,” but bushytails can be just as gratifying All you need is your basic rifle and some patience

Prairie dogs are also a popular summer pick for practice These rascals are popping up all over the country, but if you ’ re wanting to make a summer hunting vacation out of it, try taking a road trip to your nearest dog town, a designated hunting ground for prairie dogs Nebraska and Texas are great states for prairie dog hunting, with outfitters and ranches available for year-round booking Again, all you need to have some fun with these guys is a regular old rifle and plenty of ammo

Looking for even more weight? Try hunting predators, such as coyotes, cougars, and bobcats Coyotes are native to most of North America but are abundant in the north and northwest part of the country Cougars have relatively the same geographical culture and both of these predators are very intelligent, and very hard to even spot Hunting them proves to be quite a challenge, even for the most experienced sportsman If you consider yourself to be an expert, try hunting these animals if you haven’t already

Coyotes and cougars both have very keen eyesight and hearing, so you’ll want to find a secluded area for stalking.

MITCHELL, S.D.

Any hunter will tell you that it’s more than just harvesting game - it’s about teaching valuable life lessons Beyond spending time in the great outdoors, hunting is about spending time with family and friends It removes us from a hectic schedule and creates connections, allows time for telling stories, sharing memories and teaching the younger generation about the importance of those things That’s what hunting is all about

Life Lessons

Those traditions are sometimes lost through the generations - people are too busy, schedules are too crowded - the list goes on But the lessons gained through hunting are vital to pass on to the next generation Learning how to be responsible, following rules and building pride in a child’s ability to participate builds confidence and skills

Computer games and cell phones can’t teach the pride of providing and the reward of patience and hard work Plus, the appreciation for nature and the importance of protecting the environment gained

through hunting comes only second to recognizing the importance connecting face-to-face with family, friends and neighbors

Those are just some of the skills and memories your family can still experience in Mitchell, S D today
