Visit farmsunday.org for more information and to find a farm near you.

I think farmers are cool! I love the idea of visiting a farm to see what they do to produce our food. It’s not just me who thinks farmers are cool. Jesus thinks they’re so cool he uses them to teach a lesson. In Matthew 13, he tells a story about a farmer who scatters seeds. Some seeds land in places where they can’t grow – on paths, rocky ground or among weeds. Other seeds land in good soil where they can grow into healthy crops. In the story Jesus is the farmer, we’re the seeds and the soil represents the things in our lives that help us to grow into happy and healthy people. As Jesus looks after us he helps us to work out how to live the best life we can. This week, think about the type of ‘soil’ you’re growing in and trust Jesus to help you become the best you that you can be.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT SPEAKING UP WHEN PEOPLE ARE TREATED UNFAIRLY

Raise Your Voice

I

says Justin Reeves

was at a family party recently and all the kids were playing and having fun. One of my nieces went to her mum and said, ‘The boys are messing around and being unkind. It’s making me feel uncomfortable, so I thought I should raise my voice.’ I was so impressed by the way she calmly expressed how she was feeling. She’d noticed others were being unkind and unfair, and decided to speak up. I’m sorry to say, I’m not always that brave – my niece set a good example to me and made me think about the way I react when I discover people are being unkind to others. This week we’re focusing on justice, which can be a big thing to get your head around. There is a lot of

injustice, unfairness and unkindness in the world, and it can be difficult to know what to do about them. Even though you’re young you can do your bit to make a difference. By making sure you’re kind and fair, you can encourage others – even grown-ups – to think about the way they behave. Just as my niece encouraged me to think about my behaviour, you can help your family and friends to think about the way they behave too. If there’s an unfair situation that’s bothering you, raise your voice – speak to your parents, carers, a teacher or church leader and discuss what you can do to help make it better.

Fair Treats

The KA! JAM gang have been allowed some treats. Sadly, some of them think they’re in the greedy gang and they’ve taken more than their fair share. Work out the number of cookies each KA! JAM member should have for it to be fair.

What is Cyberbullying? Cyberbullying is any bullying that takes place online including social media and messaging. It can include starting rumours about someone, making threats, creating and sharing embarrassing images or name-calling.

Some people find it easier to communicate with others online. It can be a great place to find people who have the same interests as you or connect with friends and family who live far away. The internet is amazing but it could be even better without bullying, harassment and abuse. Everyone should be able to enjoy the benefits of the internet without having to worry about people being unkind to them.

Bullying or Banter? nt as a joke or banter can actually Did you know that something that is mea study, researchers found hurt someone’s feelings? In a recent ing something ‘banter’ that a lot of young people think that call . can be used as an excuse for bullying

You might have also heard someone say ‘No offence, but…’ and then say something that is upsetting or offensive anyway. Using a phrase like this doesn’t stop what you say from being unkind. When communicating with people online you can’t always hear the other person’s voice or see their face so sometimes messages can come across as unkind when that wasn’t what was meant. Make sure you always think about what you say and how you say it, and always be kind – online or in person.

12 KA - p12-13 - 11 June.indd 1

01/06/2022 15:36

Crossing the Line It’s OK to have different opinions – it makes the world interesting! However, you might see something online that you think has crosse d the line and insulted you or someone else. No one should feel upset, threatened or in danger because of the internet and what people say to them.

If you see something online that you think has crossed the line into bullying, make sure you speak up about it, but don’t make it a personal attack. Know that it’s not your fault, but try not to retaliate as this could make it worse. Save the evidence and consider blocking that person so you cannot interact again. It’s important to stay calm and remember the value of friendship. If a calm conversation doesn’t help then speak to a trusted grown-up. There are also organisations such as Cybersmile who can help if you need it.

Remember to Be SMART!

When you’re using the internet remember these five tips to stay safe and happy.

S = MEET M = ACCEPTING A R = RELIABLE = TELL T = SAFE

Keep your personal information secure and don’t share it with anyone.

If someone you only know online asks you to meet up then tell a grown-up straight away.

Don’t accept any links, adverts or requests from someone if you are unsure who they are or what they’ve sent.

You can’t trust everything you see on the internet as it might be out of date, inaccurate or not entirely true, so check with other sources.

It is important to tell a trusted grown-up if something or someone makes you feel upset, worried or confused.
