rowing up isn’t easy! The early teens can be a messy time with crazy emotions and big changes. Imagine, though, if every time you felt worried, upset or super-excited you turned into a giant red panda! Well, that’s exactly what happens to 13-year-old Mei in Disney and Pixar’s new movie, Turning Red! Mei is clever, cool and confident but suddenly, whenever her feelings get the better of her, she poofs into an eight-foot-tall, smelly, clumsy bear of red fluff. The only way she can turn back into a human girl is to take deep breaths, calm down and control her emotions. However, it’s difficult for Mei to stay calm when her passionate, over-protective mum does wacky stuff that drives Mei crazy and triggers her inner panda! Not only that, but a super-annoying classmate, a crush on a boy and her obsession with the boy band 4*Town add to Mei’s emotional roller coaster and yo-yo changes. But her amazing, loyal besties – tomboy Miriam, artsy Priya and fierce Abby – love Mei’s cute, fluffy persona and help her get through this messy time. Watch Turning Red to find out how Mei faces the ups and downs of life as a big red panda and finally figures out who she truly is!

I’m glad I don’t poof into some giant fluffy creature every time I feel emotional. I think I’d spend more time as an oversized animal than as a person. In this week’s issue we talk quite a bit about treating people fairly no matter where they’re from, what they look like or or whatever their gender – check out this week’s KA! JAM and KA! World. As Christians, we’re encouraged to treat everybody fairly, to put others first and to treat others as we want to be treated. Being a Christian means doing our best to be like Christ and doing what Jesus would do. Wouldn’t it be incredible if each time you faced something that made you feel cross, sad, confused or happy … poof! You turned into a giant Jesus? That’s not going to happen, but trying to be more like Jesus this week would be amazing!

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT BEING KIND TO PEOPLE NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE
So Many Neighbours!
I
’ve moved house a lot, which means I’ve had loads of neighbours. Some I’ve been friends with and others I didn’t know at all. But did you know that your neighbours are more than just the people who live in the house next door or in your street? This week’s Bible cartoon is a version of a wellknown story that Jesus told. Jesus often told stories to answer people’s questions and help them understand the message he was explaining. The man in the story was travelling on a dangerous road where bad people hid and jumped out to steal from travellers. The man was attacked and left all alone. After the attack, two people – a Jewish priest and a Levite (a priest’s assistant who knew about the law) – passed by the injured man without helping him. You would have thought these men would be
says Alicia Begley
kind and stop to help an injured person, but for some reason they didn’t. Instead, it was a Samaritan who stopped to help. This would have been a big deal in those days, because Samaritans and Jews hated each other. So for the Samaritan to look after the man should have been a big no-no! However, the Samaritan just did what he knew was right, even if others wouldn’t do the same. This story reminds us that everyone can be our neighbour and we should treat others the way we want to be treated. Our goal is to love everyone – not just our family and friends. It might be a bit scary to help someone we don’t even know, but the world will be a much nicer place if we’re all kinder to each other.
Spot the Difference
The good Samaritan was different to the two men who passed by and he helped the man who had been robbed. Spot the seven differences between the two pictures on the left.

It’s Just Not Fair
This is because some people don’t accept that women and men are equal. They believe women should not have the same rights and freedoms as men. As a result, women have been treated unfairly and abused simply because they are women. This is wrong and leads to lots of pain for many people.
It may be surprising that some of those female firsts happened quite recently. Even though there’s been great progress for women’s rights around the world and opportunities for women and girls are increasing, women are more affected by poverty, the climate crisis and gender-based violence.
Sometimes women are hurt, bullied or threatened by their loved ones at home. Home is supposed to be a safe place, shared with people who love us dearly. For most people it is. Sadly, one in three women around the world are exposed to violence at home. This is called domestic abuse. Most victims of domestic abuse are female, but it can happen to anyone and it is never OK.
Helping-Hand 2022 In Argentina, The Salvation Army supports women and children who have experienced domestic abuse. They run therapy sessions for women where they can talk about what has happened to them in a caring environment and get practical support to end the abuse. Children take part in an activity club called Learning Through Play. During the fun sessions, boys and girls enjoy games and sports, crafts and activities. They learn about understanding their emotions and solving problems without violence. The Salvation Army is working in communities around the world to bring an end to violence against women. They raise awareness about women’s rights, help women to leave dangerous situations and support survivors of gender-based violence.
What Now?
The first thing to do is pray! Talk to God about this challenging issue. Ask for help to understand how you feel about it, for protection for people who are vulnerable and a change in attitudes that might bring violence against women to an end.
Give a Helping-Hand! Another thing you can do is support the Helping-Hand Appeal. It’s focused on supporting The Salvation Army’s gender justice projects – working with women around the world to ensure they have equal access to rights and opportunities and the freedom to flourish. We’ll share more about how you can get involved in next week’s Kids Alive! but in the meantime visit salvationarmy.org.uk/helpinghand2022.
