Council for British Archaeology pictures

The Festival of Archaeology begins today (16 July). The theme for this year is Journeys and events will run from 16–31 July. The aim of the festival is to allow people to discover the archaeology and heritage around them as well as exploring their own history. On launch day (16 July) Segedunum Roman Fort will have field archaeologists helping visitors to imagine what the fort would have been like in Roman times. There will be activities, a pop-up art exhibition and live performances. The British Museum is also hosting family-friendly events on Saturday 16 July. Visitors can get hands-on and closer to history than ever before with archaeology-inspired activities, demonstrations and talks. You can also step back in time for the Marvellous Metals day at Bradford Industrial Museum. Find out how artefacts get from the ground to a museum at Powis Castle and Garden. See some Viking axe-throwing during HengeFest at Maumbury Rings. Or visit Clitheroe Castle to unearth artefacts in the dig pits, identify finds and get messy with clay to make a medieval tile. The festival’s closing event is a family fun day at Corfe Castle and includes tours and storyteller performances. If the festival events aren’t enough, how about joining an archaeological club? The Young Archaeologists’ Club is for children aged 8–14. Visit yac-uk.org to find a club near you. l For more information on the festival, visit archaeologyuk.org/festiva

At school, I remember studying the Ancient Egyptians. To help us learn how archaeologists searched for artefacts, my teacher hid objects in small trays of sand and we were allowed to ‘dig’ for ‘treasure’ in the trays. Anything we found we could keep. It was a fun way of learning. Talking of archaeologists and artefacts, did you know that experts have found objects that relate to characters and stories in the Bible? For example, The British Museum in London has a collection of items from Babylon. Babylon was built by King Nebuchadnezzar, who appears in this week’s cartoon Bible story on page 5. Cool, eh? Actually, the Bible’s full of written artefacts. As you flick through its pages you can discover all sorts of ‘treasure’ that can help you as you journey through life. Why not ‘dig’ around in the Bible this week? You never know what cool stuff you might find!

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT WORSHIP

It’s a Thankful Heart That Matters!

O

ne of my favourite ways to worship God is dancing to praise songs. I also love watching rhythmic gymnasts making beautiful patterns with ribbons. One day, I thought: ‘Wouldn’t that be a great way to worship God?’ So, I ordered a ribbon from a supplier of gymnastic equipment. They were a bit surprised that I wanted to use it in our Sunday meetings. But then they asked if I would like to order some gymnasts’ batons or mini-trampolines! I haven’t yet, but perhaps I should. Dancing in worship isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and not everyone is a good singer. That’s OK! Worship is simply telling God he’s awesome and saying ‘thank you’ for all he does – not out of habit but meaning it

says Melita Day-Lewis

with all our hearts. Daniel was over the moon that God had shown him the mystery of the king’s dream. He didn’t boast, gloat or take the credit. He knew that God alone had rescued everyone! The very first thing he did was worship God and say thank you. He was so excited that he shouted out a poem of praise about God’s wisdom, goodness and power. I wouldn’t be surprised if he danced for joy too! What do you do when God answers your prayers? Can you think of something to thank God for? You can tell him how awesome he is by singing a song, writing a poem, creating some artwork or making up a dance routine. If it comes from a thankful heart, it’s worship!

Praise Poem

Use the space below to write a poem or draw a picture to say thank you to God. Why don’t you ask your children’s leader if you can share it in a Sunday meeting?

Big Butterfly Count 2022 The Big Butterfly Count is a nationwide survey to help Butterfly Conservation to work out the health of our environment. More than 107,000 people took part in 2021 and it’s time for the 2022 count to begin.

Why Count Butterflies? Butterflies aren’t just beautiful creatures, they’re really important. They’re a key part of the food chain and help maintain the ecosystem by pollinating. However, butterflies are under threat. Numbers of butterflies and moths in the United Kingdom have decreased a lot since the 1970s.

A decline in butterfly numbers is an early warning sign to scientists about other wildlife losses. If butterfly numbers are decreasing, nature is in trouble! Counting butterflies helps experts know the health of wildlife in different areas of the UK.

How to Take Part It doesn’t take long to take part in the Big Butterfly Count. All you need to do is spend 15 minutes counting butterflies between 15 July and 7 August.

Step One Make sure you download the handy identification chart from bigbutterflycount.org before you get started. You could also ask your parents or carers to download the free app.

Step Two Head out to a garden, park, school grounds, field or even a forest. Preferably on a sunny, warm day!

12 KA - p12-13 - 16 July.indd 1

08/07/2022 15:53

Step Three If you’re counting from one spot, count the number of each species you see at a single time. So if you see three red admirals on a bush, count them as three. However, if you see one on the bush at a time, count that as one. This is so you don’t count the same butterfly more than once. If you’re doing your counting on a walk, just total up the number of each butterfly species that you see during the 15 minutes.

Step Four You can do as many counts as you like at different times, on different days or in different locations. You can submit your counts on the Big Butterfly Count website or via the app. And remember, it’s important to report if you don’t see any butterflies too!

Fluttering Facts Here are some fab facts about our fluttering friends. Share them with your friends to inspire them to take part in the Big Butterfly Count too! Butterflies have four wings, not two.

You won’t see many butterflies if it’s chilly out. They can’t fly when it’s too cold! If you see one resting in the sunshine, it is warming up its wings so it can fly. That’s why it’s best to do your butterfly count on warm, sunny days if possible.

Butterflies taste with their feet! Their taste receptors are located on their feet, which they use to detect different things when they land on flowers and plants.

The world’s biggest butterfly is the Queen Alexandra’s birdwing. Its wingspan can be as big as 30cm!

Butterflies feed on nectar so if you want to encourage more to visit your garden, plant lots of colourful flowers. Try bluebells, lavender, cornflowers or primroses. Even if you don’t have much space you can plant flowers in a pot on a balcony or in a window box.

Get Going Visit bigbutterflycount.org for more information about the Big Butterfly Count. Or check out butterfly-conservation.org to find out more about these incredible creatures.

Pukka Paddleboarding Lots of churches have groups for members to get together and share fun and friendship. Thanks to an idea from Hazell Ball, Maidstone Salvation Army have started a group that’s a little bit different – paddleboarding! During the coronavirus pandemic, Hazell and her family realised the benefits of paddleboarding and wanted to share these with the rest of their church. Taking inspiration from the story of Jesus encouraging Peter to walk on water (Matthew 14:22–33), the WOW (Walk on Water) group was born! What began as a small group turned into a big group because so many people wanted to join. The group had a fantastic afternoon enjoying the warm weather and calm lake. By the end of the afternoon most of the children and some of the adults stepped out in faith and managed to stand up, despite it being their first time! Great work, everyone.

Cool Colourings

This Celebration Colouring was sent by Finley, age 8. We hope you enjoyed doing it to celebrate International Day of Children and Youth.

Lauren, age 13, sent this cool Celebration Colouring. We love the choice of colours for the friends having fun.
