Late in the afternoon of 8 September, just as we were finishing off this week’s issue, my radio suddenly went silent, then… ‘This is BBC News.’ I knew exactly what was coming next, ‘We’re interrupting our schedules for the following announcement: Buckingham Palace has announced the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.’ I felt very sad – as I’m sure many of you did. I was working from home, so I was able to share this moment with my family. We talked about the Queen, how sad it was that she’d died and shared some of our memories of her. I hope you’ve been able to speak to someone about how you felt too.

With so much fighting going on it’s hard to know how we can help make life more peaceful. However, peace starts at home and in our everyday lives. The theme for this year’s International Day of Peace is End Racism – Build Peace, and that’s something everyone can play a part in.

EndInternationalDayofPeaceRacism–BuildPeace

Later, when I was reading about the Queen, I found some words from her Christmas Day speech in 2014 and they seemed to fit with the theme of this

‘For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace … is an inspiration and an anchor in my life. A role-model of reconciliation and forgiveness, he stretched out his hands in love, acceptance and healing. Christ’s example has taught me to seek to respect and value all people of whatever faith or none.’

The Queen was an excellent example to us all and she took her example from Jesus. We’ll miss her, and our thoughts are with her family. Rest in peace, Your Majesty.

In villages, towns and cities all over the UK, there are people who have different skin tones, were born in other countries or believe in different things. That’s the beauty of the UK – it’s made up of a diverse and incredible group of people. And we can all celebrate that and make the world we live in more peaceful. To begin with, don’t treat others badly because of what they look like, where they’re from or what they believe in. If we all do that, and show kindness to everyone, then it’s a small start to building a more peaceful world.

For more information about International Day of Peace, check out internationaldayofpeace.org

International Day of Peace is celebrated on 21 September every year. Sometimes it feels like the world we live in isn’t very peaceful.

At this very moment there is a war happening in Ukraine, as well as many conflicts in other parts of the world.

Mariam’s story is almost identical to this week’s Bible story. Both Mariam and Peter were imprisoned and sentenced to death because of their faith. But just at the right moment, God rescued them.

So, if you find yourself in a challenging situation because of your faith, take heart – God is with you and he will help you.

Angels in Action

says Ibukun Baku

A few years ago, a lady called Mariam Ibrahim was imprisoned in Sudan for being a Christian. Whenever I read her story, I would be in awe of her bravery, but equally angry at the unfairness of the situation. So, I would pray, (as I’m sure many others were doing too), asking God to help set her free. Thankfully, he did!

Being a Christian is wonderful and in this country it’s very unlikely that people would be arrested for being one. But there may be other challenges that we face.

There are other stories in the Bible when angels have appeared to people in danger. Match the names of the Bible characters to the image that represents their story. You can use the Bible verses to help you.

As Jesus’ friends, we’ve chosen to live our lives his way. This means we won’t always do what others do, for example using bad words, listening to or watching certain songs or shows. And as a result, we may begin to get left out of things.

Has this happened to you? Well, the good news is that God promises to never leave you alone. He sends people to help us when we’re feeling lonely. In Peter’s case, the church prayed hard for him and God sent an angel to set him free. For Mariam, as people prayed for her, her story spread and eventually she was released.

As time goes on there may be special occasions that are very difficult such as Christmas, Easter or birthdays. Try to think of ways that you can make those days special. Remember the happy times you shared together or share funny stories. You could also create a memory box – put in photos, stories or special items that remind you of the person you’ve lost. and an active lifestyle and caringforyourphysical, mental and spiritual well-being

When someone dies, things can feel really painful to start with but it’s important to remember that things will get better. However, feeling better doesn’t mean you’re forgetting about the person who has died or that you love them any less. It’s OK for you to laugh and have fun because there will be some days when you feel like that.

It would be great if life was always happy and fun, wouldn’t it? There are so many wonderful things in the world, but unfortunately there are also some horrible things that most of us have to face at some point.

Have you ever had to deal with someone special dying? Maybe a parent, grandparent, brother or sister. Or perhaps it was an auntie, uncle, cousin or even a pet that passed away. Unfortunately, more than 24,000 children in Britain are bereaved of a parent every year (bereaved means that the person has died). Around 537,000 kids experience the death of a close friend of the family. That’s around the same number as all the seats in Wembley Stadium filled nine times!

When something is bothering us, it really helps to talk to someone about it and share how we are feeling. If there is someone in your family you feel comfortable talking to, speak to them. If there isn’t, you could try talking to your favourite teacher, Sunday school leader or a family friend.

You could also visit winstonswish.org.uk and click on ‘Young People’ – Winston’s Wish is a charity that is especially for bereaved children.

TALK ALL ABOUT IT

If you don’t find talking about your feelings easy, you could try showing how you feel by drawing pictures, making things out of modelling clay or writing things down.

13 g

It also takes different people a different amount of time to learn to cope with losing someone. Some people find that they feel different from their friends and this stops them talking and hanging out with them as much. Remember, though, you’re still the same person and you need your friends’ support. Find the people that you feel safe and comfortable around.

Just like when people are dealing with serious illness, some people struggle with knowing how to act or behave when someone they love dies. The truth is there is no perfect way to deal with someone dying – everyone reacts differently. Sadness is an obvious emotion to feel but so are anger and fear.

If you would like more advice on what to do if you lose someone you love, ask your teacher if there is a counselling service at your school. If there isn’t, you could ask your teacher about Place 2Be – a counselling service that runs in 200 schools around the UK. They run one-toone support sessions, lunchtime drop-ins and group work. Teachers can find out more at place2be.org.uk.

Ruth and Rhoda, who attend their local Salvation Army, were invited to assist Blue Peter presenter Adam Beales. Adam was attempting his Presenter Challenge – cycling the length of Lake Windermere on a hydrofoil bike! However, after Adam’s bike broke, he had to train for the event on land. The super sisters (who hold records for cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats) joined him on their bikes in Cheshire to give him some advice. The girls also got to go to the BBC Studios in Manchester to appear on Blue Peter and were surprised with Gold Blue Peter Badges! These were awarded for their cycling achievements and efforts to encourage other children to take on outdoor challenges. Great work, girls!
