What’s
Calling all nature lovers, wildlife walkers and climate heroes! We’ve got a challenge that we think will be right up your street. The Wildlife Trusts charity know how important it is to tackle the climate and nature crisis facing our world. Their mission is to see 30 per cent of the world’s land and sea protected for nature by 2030. However, they need all of our help to make a difference. That’s why they’re asking people to strap on their walking boots and join in the Big Wild Walk this week. The challenge is to walk 30km between Monday 24 October and Sunday 30 October, which is half term for schools in England and Wales. How you choose to complete the challenge is up to you. You can walk it all in one day or you can walk the distance over three days, seven days or set your own goal entirely. So you don’t have to complete the challenge this week. You can even complete the walk as part of a team. Walk it, crawl it, even cartwheel it!Whatever gets you over the and raises money at the same time.
There’s also a challenge for younger walkers. The Hedgehog Challenge is a 3km walk – the same distance that a hedgehog can cover in one night. So whatever your age, there’s a challenge for you!
Check out wildlifetrusts.org/bigwildwalk for resources to help you. Download a checklist, sponsorship form or distance tracking sheet. Or take a look at the autumn leaves or October wildlife spotter sheet to see what you can spot while walking.
As you can see from the article above, we have a mission for you – to get out and enjoy nature while walking. You could add to your mission by raising money that will be used to care for nature and help slow down climate change.
The Salvation Army (which Kids Alive! is a part of) is also on a and love others. To help us do that we have some guidelines called a mission statement – you can read more about that here: salvationarmy.org.uk/our-mission-vision-and-values. Why not check them out and chat to a grown-up about how

What Would Daniel Do?
Have you ever woken up in the morning and thought, ‘That was a weird dream’? I don’t usually remember my dreams, but my husband often says to me, ‘You’ll never believe what happened in my dream last night’. His dreams always seem to be so random and never make any sense.
In this week’s Bible cartoon King Nebuchadnezzar has a strange dream … and an even stranger response to it! He wants to chop people into pieces. Gulp! Thankfully Daniel steps in and tells the king what God says the dream means. Phew!
King Nebuchadnezzar and Daniel react differently when faced with a problem. Nebuchadnezzar goes into a rage, while Daniel keeps calm and talks to God.
asks Cara MottWhich of these people do you think reacted to their problem in the better way? Daniel, of course! All of us face problems in our lives, because nobody has a perfect life. It’s OK to feel frustrated about the things that happen or go wrong. However, the way we deal with our frustrations is very important. Do you get angry and lash out like Nebuchadnezzar? Or keep calm like Daniel?
When faced with problems, worries or even bad dreams, keeping calm and talking to someone about our feelings can really help. Whether it’s your parents, carers, teachers, Sunday school leaders or God, share your feelings and see how others can help you solve any problems.
Write the words from this week’s Bible story into the correct places in the grid – we’ve added some letters to help you. The letters in the shaded column will reveal two new words that are good advice for when we face problems.
ABOUT HOW GOD PLACES PEOPLE AROUND YOU TO HELP YOU
As soon as we become friends with Jesus, God’s Holy Spirit comes to live in our hearts. Each day, he helps us to become more like Jesus. As the Holy Spirit changes us, we produce good fruits so we can share the love of God with others.
Kindness
God did the kindest thing ever by saving us from all the wrong things we do. Through his son, Jesus, God made a way for us to become better people. God helped us, because he loves everyone. With his Holy Spirit living in us, we can also show kindness to others
ARE YOU OK? LET ME HELP YOU UP.

Hayley Still, from Salvation Army International Development UK, tells us about International Development Week 2022.
(24–30 October) is International Development Week – a chance to explore, celebrate and support The Salvation Army’s work tackling poverty and injustice around the world.
25 Years of International Development
This year marks 25 years since The Salvation Army in the United Kingdom and Ireland started the International Development team –although it was called the ‘Overseas Projects Of ce’ back then.
A few other things have also changed in the past quarter of a century … we’ve shifted our focus areas so we can best respond to the challenges affecting people around the world. Some people in the team have moved on and new people have joined. And advancements in technology have given us lots of new opportunities for working with people on the other side of the world.
Our History
Though there have been changes, our commitment to working for a world without poverty and injustice has stayed the same. Over the years we’ve partnered with other Salvation Army teams in more than 60 countries to support hundreds of projects that have helped thousands of people.
It’s all about working together! We all have different skills and resources that we can use to help. What’s important is that we listen to each other and learn from each other so we can make a difference together.
What is The Salvation Army Doing Now?
The Salvation Army still works with communities around the world and supports projects that help people to overcome the challenges of poverty and injustice that they are experiencing. This includes: taking a stand for women and girls so they can have equal rights and opportunities; improving communities’ access to clean water; supporting people affected by disasters; and helping farmers to boost their harvests.
Karambiri
Liquid Gold
Fertiliser may not seem that important – or even very pleasant – but it is transforming lives in Burkina Faso, Africa. Fertiliser helps plants grow, an essential for small-scale farmers. However, chemical fertiliser is expensive and can actually damage the soil.
That’s why The Salvation Army is working with farmers and training them to make their own organic liquid fertiliser using green matter, animal manure, ash, soil and water.
Karambiri is one of the farmers who took part in the project. He grows rice, maize and other cereals on his small plot of land. He shared that since he started using liquid fertiliser in his eld, his harvests have improved. He said, ‘Before I spent a lot of money purchasing chemical fertiliser, but since learning how to use liquid and compost fertiliser I now have money to spare, which I use to pay for my children’s school fees.’
Karambiri also said that he is now sharing his knowledge with 15 people in his community. That will help them experience the positive change that he has had. Re ecting on the future, he said, ‘I am really hopeful for the future since I can now produce enough for my family.’
What is International Development Week?
International Development Week is all about spreading the word about the work The Salvation Army is doing internationally. It’s a time to celebrate the great examples of people working together to overcome poverty. It’s also about raising awareness about the issues of injustice that are keeping people from living life in all its fullness.
How Can I Take Part?
There are lots of ways to get involved in International Development Week. You can take part in our virtual quiz night, use the ID week resources, watch our videos, follow updates on our social media channels or visit our photo exhibition in London. (If you can’t get to London to visit the exhibition in person, you can see all the photos online.) Find all the information you need at salvationarmy.org.uk/idweek.
Pray With Us
Another way you can get involved is by praying. Prayer is essential! There are things in the world that we can’t control but even in the unknown, we can be sure of God’s unchanging love. Please pray for…
Individuals and communities who are working hard to overcome poverty
Everyone to show kindness and generosity to all people
Salvation Army staff and volunteers who run community development projects
Governments around the world to pass just laws that are fair for everyone
Wandle Womble
Members of Wimbledon Salvation Army celebrated their move to Crown Lane in Morden at the Heritage Discovery Day exhibition. There were more than 1,500 visitors and the Wimbledon Salvation Army stand featured photos by Mark Grassham (who attends this Salvation Army) as he had a unique collection of photos of the Queen between 1990 and 2018.
Visitors to the stand were very excited to see that Wandle, a local Womble, was handing out copies of Kids Alive! too. Wandle-ful!
