his weekend is a time to celebrate young people all over the world because Sunday (24 April) is The Salvation Army’s International Day of Children and Youth. This year’s theme is One Life, One World, One God and the aim of the day is to highlight how important young people are and give them a voice. The theme and materials were created by young people in The Salvation Army’s South America West Territory. On Sunday, they want members of The Salvation Army to focus on the story of Joseph – check out Genesis 37:1 to 50:26. Joseph’s father loved him very much and gave him a beautiful coat. Joseph had some pretty crazy dreams that he shared with his family. His brothers were jealous, so they sold him to be someone’s slave! He was put in prison, but by trusting God he ended up ruling a country – what a rollercoaster ride! Even though things in the Bible happened a long time ago, we can relate to them. We all have people who love and encourage us, but there might be some who reject us. It would have been easy for Joseph to become discouraged and feel alone, but God was with him, just as he’s with us today. When you’re friends If Genesis 37:1 to 50 :26 feels like with Jesus, you’ll always have someone a big read, go to th e lin ks below to who loves you and encourages you. God watch cartoons of Jo se ph’s story… has amazing plans for your life – it’s up Joseph and His Co at to you to go out and do them.

Have you ever been told you’re too young or too small to do something? Maybe you sometimes wonder ‘Who am I?’ ‘Why am I here?’ or ‘What difference can I make?’ The good news is, God doesn’t think you’re too young or too small and he wants to help you figure out who you really are, why you’re here and help you to make a difference. The Bible reminds us that everyone is made in the image of God. That means that you were created by God to be a masterpiece – totally unique and wonderful. Young people are so important – not just for the future but for now. You’re never too young to have a real relationship with Jesus and follow his plans for your life. You just need to stay close to him to figure out what those plans are and do your best to put them into action.

No Coincidence!

E

says Justin Reeves

very so often, something amazing happens. Members of the Kids Alive! team come up with a bunch of ideas, write various articles and things get sent to us to include in KA! Then they all just fit together. The team calls this a God-incidence. Let me try to explain what I mean… The theme for International Day of Children and Youth (see the cover and page 3) was decided more than a year ago and our editorial assistant, Alicia, wrote the page 3 article last week. About a month ago, our big boss, Mal, asked us to write something about values (see pages 12 and 13). We wanted to publish that article weeks ago, but we

couldn’t and it’s ‘ended up’ in this week’s issue. Today, when I started writing this article, I realised the three Bible verses we’re thinking about link to pages 3, 12 and 13. Coincidence? Nah! I think God has a really important message for you to hear. I think God wants you to know that he created you just the way he wants you to be and has some great ideas for what you should do with your life. He wants you to be close to him – talk to him, read the Bible and listen to what he’s saying to you. God wants you to try your hardest to live life his way and do good things, so that people who see the way you live will want to be close to him too.

Memorable Morals Can you think of any of your favourite book or film characters who have a set of values that they live by? Think about the Toy Story movies. Buzz Lightyear always had big dreams, believed in himself and aimed ‘for infinity and beyond’. Woody, on the other hand, taught us that everyone has a place. He also shows how important it is to look after your friends and never leave anyone behind. There are so many great life lessons we can learn from the world around us!

Create Your Code You might never have thought about where your values come from. It probably started with your family – parents, carers, siblings and others who shaped your attitudes and beliefs.

Next up – school! Lots of schools have values that they want their students and teachers to show, both in and out of school. Perhaps you also attend a church, youth club or other groups. Do they have a codes of conduct or sets of values? There might even be some rules about how you should behave. If everyone understands the values and tries to keep them, it can help everyone to get along and be the best they can be.

Valuing People Many organisations have sets of values that help guide their behaviour and responses to different situations. Did you know that The Salvation Army, which publishes Kids Alive!, has a set of values based on loving God and loving others? For people who work or volunteer for The Salvation Army, and those who attend The Salvation Army as their church, the six values below help show what love means and how to put it into action.

Boldness

Be honest and brave when caring for others, telling them about Jesus and looking after our world.

Compassion Passion Respect

Show love, grace and kindness, and forgive others.

Be enthusiastic and committed to what you do and try your best.

Be kind and welcoming and build relationships with everyone you meet.

Integrity Mutual Accountability

Be honest, trustworthy and not selfish.

Let others help you to do your best and help others in return.

Live a Lovely Life This week, think about how you can live out your values. Some examples are listed below. Join each value to the example of an action you can do.
