A few weeks ago I went to my daughter’s first sports day. One of the best things was that every child got to have a turn at each race. When the children weren’t in a race themselves, they cheered for their friends. Of course, lots of parents were there to support as well. It was so nice for us all to be together at a school event. One of the things I love about the Commonwealth Games is that they’re inclusive. The Games’ motto is Humanity, Equality, Destiny, the motto for Birmingham 2022 is Games for Everyone and the Commonwealth Games are often called the Friendly Games. As Christians we’re followers of Jesus and we should try our best to be loving and kind to everyone – to be friendly and inclusive. Whether it’s school, sports or church, enjoy being able to get together and do your best to be like Jesus.

ave you watched an escapologist in chains get out of a tank before it fills with water? Everyone is amazed and wonders: ‘How did he escape?’ In this week’s cartoon Bible story there is an amazing escape story. Daniel is thrown to hungry lions in a den that’s sealed with a huge stone. He’s alone in the dark and there’s no way out. However, in the morning the king finds Daniel safe and sound! God had closed the mouths of the lions! The Bible tells us that Daniel was rescued because he trusted God. Sometimes we can feel alone, unsafe and afraid. No matter how hard we think about it, we can’t find a way out. The story of Daniel reminds us that God is in
control and when we trust him, he will help us. There’s another awesome escape story in the Bible. After Jesus died, he was placed in a tomb sealed with a huge stone. His followers had lost hope. They thought they would never see him again. But two days later Jesus came alive again and the stone was rolled away! That amazing ‘escape’ means that anyone who trusts in Jesus will be saved. God had a plan – what seemed like a defeat was in fact the greatest victory! Are you feeling sad and afraid? Jesus loves you and he has a plan. Trust him and ask for his help. One day, when you look back you will see that he was with you all the time!

s e m a G e h t r o f t e Get S Are you ready to watch some amazing athletes compete at the Commonwealth Games? Watching sport on TV is so much fun, but it’s also great to get stuck in and try some sports yourself. Of course, some of the sports at the Commonwealth Games aren’t easy or cheap to take part in. So here are some ways you can enjoy the spirit of the Commonwealth Games in simple, easy ways.
Table tennis Table tennis is an exciting sport. Try it at home with a table, two paper plates, two lolly sticks, some sticky tape and a balloon. Stick one lolly stick on to the back of each paper plate. Then blow up the balloon. Grab a friend or family member and stand at opposite sides of the table. Try to land the balloon on your opponent’s side of the table. The winner of table tennis is the first person to get 11 points. But there must be a gap of two points for someone to win (11–9 for example).
Gymnastics Rhythmic gymnasts produce controlled, precise and elegant routines. You can do this sport easily at home, you just need some space. Pick your favourite piece of music and create a cool routine to dance across the floor to. Use a hoop, ball, ribbon or rope to add some extra interest to your routine. Watch the rhythmic gymnasts at the Commonwealth Games to get some top tips for mega moves.
There are also team rhythmic gymnastics events so you can get some friends together to create a fab group routine too.

15/07/2022 15:22
Long Jump The long jump is a fantastic field event at the Commonwealth Games. To recreate this at home you can use masking tape. Cut a strip of tape and place it on the floor – make sure there is enough space before and after it so you can run and jump.
You can use the masking tape to mark how far you jump. Challenge yourself to jump further or compete against your family or friends.
Hurdles Hurdles races combine the speed of normal track races and add extra excitement! Why not have a go at these in your garden or a park? Create a track on the grass by deciding where the start and finish is. Then set up hurdles at equal distances between the start and finish. You can use anything to create the hurdles, such as piles of clothes, beanbags, pool noodles, boxes, bags or the cardboard tubes you get inside wrapping paper.
Relay Race Relay races are incredible to watch. There’s always a risk that someone will drop the baton – disaster! There are loads of ways to recreate relay races in a garden, park or other outdoor space. You can use something as a baton like in the Commonwealth Games or mix things up a bit. Do an egg and spoon relay race where you take it in turns to run with an egg balanced on a spoon. Make it a dress-up relay where you have to put on fancy dress at one end of the ‘track’ and then race back. Grab a bucket or cup filled with water and see which team can make it to the finish with the most water still in the bucket or cup.
Shot Put The athletes at the Commonwealth Games use really heavy balls for the shot put. They need to be incredibly strong. You can have a go at this sport using different items. If you want something easy to throw, try a small beanbag or some rolled up socks. If you want to make a mess, try using water balloons! You can also use tennis balls or cricket balls. Just make sure you have plenty of space to aim so you don’t hit anyone.
Have fun exploring different Commonwealth Games sports and remember to send us photos of what you get up to. Our email address is kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk.

Fab Fundraiser
Last Christmas, Reggie and his sister, Summer, raised money to support the work of the Salvation Army Food Bank in Deptford. It seems Reggie has caught the fundraising bug, because now he’s also completed a litter pick, raising £270! The money will go towards the food bank and a new bench for the community well-being garden. Not only has Reggie improved the area by litter picking, he has also made a huge difference to the lives of families who are struggling. Great work, Reggie!
Cool Colourings Rachel, age 7, gave her wolf lovely red eyelids to match Red Riding Hood’s cloak. Beautiful! Leon, age 9, sent us this wonderful Little Red Riding Hood Colouring. The wolf looks so happy cuddling up to Red.
Victoria, age 13, did a great job with her cool colouring. We love the added clouds and tree in the background!
