The Championships Wimbledon take place over two weeks from Monday 27 June to Sunday 10 July. Tickets are very hard to get, but thankfully coverage will be on BBC One, BBC Two and the red button so you don’t have to miss a shot!
Did you know the longest ever tennis match lasted just over 11 hours? At Wimbledon in 2010, Nicolas Mahut and John Isner slogged it out for so long the scoreboard broke! That’s a lot of running, jumping, twisting and turning – all while trying to whack a fuzzy yellow ball past an opponent. Tennis players are incredible. They can be on court for hours. Unlike lots of other sportspeople they have no teammates with them to help. Not only are coaches not allowed courtside to give tips and talk tactics, but if the umpire sees them trying to help from their seats they get into trouble. Life, with all its twists and turns, can feel like a slog at times. Thankfully, none of us are ‘on court’ alone. We can turn to our coach, Jesus, anytime we like. He’s always available to listen and share some top tips.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT LOOKING AFTER PEOPLE FROM OTHER COUNTRIES
You’re Welcome!
T
says Justin Reeves
here are some horrible things going on in the world right now. Sometimes it can be hard to see the good in the world, but terrible situations can also bring out the best in people. For example, every Monday the Salvation Army church that I go to opens its doors to people who have escaped the war in Ukraine. People from the church are there to listen, chat, offer advice and do their best to make people feel welcome. One of the dads at our church simply played Lego with a boy while his mum chatted to someone else. It was a little thing, but it probably made a huge difference to the boy’s day. It’s not just our church that’s helping people.

Hello!
Marhaba Dobryi den’ Néih hóu Namaste Jambo Answers on Page 2
A group of churches in our town have got together to organise a Friendship Festival. Recently, a lot of people have moved to the United Kingdom from Hong Kong. This event has been organised so they can meet and support other people who have moved here from Hong Kong. Maybe there are kids from Ukraine, Hong Kong or other countries who have started at your school, church or club. How can you make them feel welcome? What can you do to help them settle into life in this country? Speak to your parents, carers, teachers and church leaders to see if you can think of things you can do to help.
One of the most simple ways to help someone feel welcome is to say hello to them in their own language. Match the foreign words for hello to the countries where those languages are spoken.

Kenya (BantuSwahili)
Hong Kong (Cantonese)
India (Hindi)
Many countries have lots of languages. Remember to check which language someone speaks.

he Amazon jungle is the world’s largest tropical rainforest. It has one of the world’s longest rivers and is full of unique creatures and amazing people. This week’s competition prize is a duo of books set in this beautiful forest – the home of jaguars and giant sloths! Escape to the River Sea returns to the world created in Journey to the River Sea – a book about Maia, a young orphan who started a new life in the Amazon jungle in 1910. It’s now 1946 and Rosa has found refuge in England during the Second World War. Now that the war is over, she longs to be reunited with her family. A family friend takes Rosa on an adventure deep in the Amazon rainforest. They face a danger greater than they could imagine, but Rosa also discovers a place to belong. For your opportunity to win both books answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. International Joke Day Be prepared to giggle, chortle, chuckle and guffaw your way through Friday 1 July because it’s International Joke Day! The day is a great way to kick-start the second half of the year with a smile.
Laughter is the Best Medicine Have you ever heard the phrase ‘laughter is the best medicine’? It means having a good giggle can make you feel better even when you’re poorly. It’s believed that the phrase comes from the Bible. Proverbs 17:22 says ‘a cheerful heart is good medicine’ (New International Version).
Comic Relief It isn’t just a phrase, though. Some scientists have done research and believe that it’s really true! Experts at Oxford University have found that laughing can help us feel better if we’re in pain. This is because when we laugh our bodies release chemicals called endorphins, which make us feel good. Laughter also reduces stress hormones and relaxes the body. However, a little laugh won’t do much, it needs to be a big belly laugh. So you’ll need some real rib-ticklers to hand if you want to make someone feel better!

Play on Words but lots of them share There’s no set formula for creating a funny joke rvations about the world similar patterns. Some jokes are clever obse er style jokes, such as ‘Knock, around us and some are question-and-answ s, which is when one word knock’ jokes. Many jokes use a play on word be called puns. For example… has more than one meaning. These can also
Why is tennis a noisy game? Because each player raises a racket! This joke uses the word racket, which has two meanings – it’s what tennis players hit the ball with and it also means a loud noise. This week, see if you can spot words that mean two different things. Can you create your own joke using one of these words? If you need some inspiration, pop over to Giggle in the Middle on pages 8 and 9!
Nothing Tricky Some people like jokes that are practical jokes, which involve playing a trick on someone else. Others make fun of people because of their appearance or behaviour to try to get a laugh. The Kids Alive! team aren’t big fans of these types of humour, though, as they can be upsetting. It’s not nice when someone makes a joke about you, so we think it’s a much better idea to stick to telling jokes that aren’t mean or nasty. Jokes are supposed to be good things that make people happy, not sad.
Punny Profiles We love reading jokes from our readers. So if you’ve got a favourite one that you think will make us laugh out loud, why don’t you email it to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk? You can also complete a Reader Profile for the Your Space section on pages 14 and 15. One of the questions we ask is ‘Tell us a joke.’ Ask your parents or carers to email the address above and we’ll send a questionnaire for you to complete (as well as sending a photographic permission form for your parents or carers). Also, it’s always good to remember if you get an email about canned meat, don’t open it … it’s spam! Ha, ha!
