ums, step-mums, nans or those who care for us like a M mum are awesome! They cook meals, do DIY, mend clothes, help with homework, give cuddles and kisses and look out for their children as best they can. And they do all of that, even when they’re working, tired, sick or busy! That’s why we celebrate Mother’s Day each year. It’s important to show some appreciation to our mums more than once a year, but special occasions like this are a great opportunity to remember to do that! It’s Mother’s Day tomorrow (27 March), so if you haven’t already planned something special, here are some ideas about how you can honour your mothers. Why don’t you make them a beautiful card that tells them how much you love and appreciate them? You could also bake them a cake, take them breakfast in bed or make them a gift. To get something homemade is very special! Check out page 11 for instructions on how to make a beautiful heart wreath. It doesn’t take much effort to do something thoughtful or helpful, or to say something loving and kind. You will be amazed at how much these seemingly small things mean to mums, nans or carers! And remember to keep on honouring them throughout the year – they’re worth it!
Remember to check out page 11 to find out how to make a heart wreath
The Kids Alive! team finds Mother’s Day tricky. We think mums are awesome and we want to celebrate those special people who do so much for us. But we also know it can be a sad day for some people. I find Mother’s Day a bit tough myself. My mum died a number of years ago and I miss her very much. So I’d be fibbing if I told you I don’t feel sad on Mother’s Day. My mum would never have wanted me to be sad, so I try to make it a happy day too by thanking God for all the cool things we did together. Even though my mum’s not around anymore, God has placed loads of other special people in my life who love me, so I’ll be saying an extra-big thank you to God for them too. Do your best to make Mother’s Day a happy day, readers.

READ THE COMMENT ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF TELLING PEOPLE ABOUT JESUS
Share the Love!
I
says Alicia Begley
s there something interesting that one of your parents, grandparents or another loved one has taught you? For example, my grandma taught my mum how to make a yummy apple crumble. My mum then taught me and one day I’ll teach my son. You see, there are so many things in life that someone has taken the time to teach you. Whether you realise it or not, you’ll probably pass these things on to someone else. This week’s Bible cartoon tells the story of a young guy called Timothy. He ended up travelling to many different countries, starting churches and telling people about Jesus, but it all happened because of the people who told him. Timothy’s good friend Paul wrote him a letter, and in the letter Timothy’s mum,
Eunice, and grandmother, Lois, got a mention. That means they must have been pretty special! Lois and Eunice showed their love for Timothy by teaching him about God and helping him to grow in his faith. It might be that you have a special person in your life who tells you about Jesus. Take some time this week to tell them how much you appreciate them. Talking of appreciation, tomorrow (27 March) is Mother’s Day! This is a day when we can thank all the people who are important to us – not just mums – and show them how much we care. One way you can cherish and love someone is by telling them about Jesus. After all, his love is the greatest gift in the whole world!
Heart-Filled Prayer Puzzle Uh-oh! One of the letters in this prayer has been replaced with hearts. Work out which letter is missing and what the prayer says.

TAILs COMPETITION
f you’ve ever wondered what happens when cats, dogs, squirrels, pigeons and foxes try to work together to solve a crime, then this competition is for you! TAILs: The Animal Investigators of London is a delightful detective novel based on a real-life event which took place around 2015. The book picks up where the police left off – they failed to catch the culprit of some nasty crimes involving cats. So the animals try to do what the humans couldn’t and take justice into their own hands … or rather paws! When a very special tabby kitten named Yowl learns of the threat he enlists the help of Big Red, the leader of the foxes. Along with Secret – a squirrel who’s afraid of heights – they attempt to track down the culprit. As the crimes continue, it’s Hewt the owl whose help they need the most. Working together they manage to identify the person committing the crimes, but what can they do to stop him? Will Yowl’s carelessness put them all in even more danger? TAILs: The Animal Investigators of London is a funny tale of an unlikely friendship of neighbourhood animals coming together in the face of danger. For your opportunity to win TAILs: The Animal Investigators of London answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk to reach us by Friday 22 April when the winners will be chosen – remember to put ‘TAILs Competition’ in the subject box. shape and stick them with glue.
5 Use a peg to hold the ends together until the glue dries. 6 Repeat steps 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 another seven times so you are left with eight paper hearts.
7
Place the hearts in a circle and use your glue to stick together the sides that are touching. Then use a peg to hold them in place until the glue dries.
8 Cut another 2cm-wide strip of paper and glue each end to one of the hearts to make a loop to hang your wreath.

Over the past few weeks we’ve been sharing about The Salvation Army’s Helping-Hand Appeal. This year the appeal is focused on Gender Justice and how The Salvation Army is working with women around the world to ensure they have equal access to rights and opportunities, and the freedom to flourish. Part of achieving gender justice is bringing an end to gender stereotyping and sexism. You can be history makers by looking out for signs of gender stereotyping and sexism, challenging them and choosing not to accept them.
Making Sense of Things Gender stereotyping is when people assume that certain behaviour, characteristics or roles belong to or should be performed by women or men. The impact of sexism can be extreme such as violence against women and girls. It is important to know about and challenge, but it is perhaps not something we encounter in our day to day lives.
Sexism is when a person is treated unfairly or judged because of their gender.
Sexism can also be subtle. Unfortunately, you have probably experienced sexism at some point, but it can be difficult to notice. It may seem harmless, but it adds to the inequality between men and women.
Be A-Wear! In shops, children’s clothing is often separated into girls and boys sections, with a clear difference in the colours, patterns and words used in their designs. Clothes intended for girls are frequently pink featuring flowers and unicorns, while boys are expected to wear blue, black or brown clothes with trucks or dinosaurs printed on them. And while boys’ tops encourage adventure and power, the messages for girls are about being pretty and sparkly.
Now, let’s be clear, there’s absolutely no problem with girls liking flowers and unicorns. But should that be all that is available to them? And what about boys who like those things too? Wouldn’t it be good if trucks, dinosaurs and even sparkly unicorns could be for everyone?
12 KA - p12-13 - 26 March.indd 1
18/03/2022 15:16
Fun Unlimited! Like clothes, hobbies and toys are also sometimes shown to be just for boys or girls. And the message is clear - girls are encouraged to be artistic, nurturing and caring while boys are encouraged to build stuff, fight and be physically active. When children are told what kinds of toys they should play with or what types of games they should enjoy, it limits their choices and their chances.
Words Matter Stereotyping can also come through in the things people say. Think about how people use the phrase ‘like a girl’ in a negative way. Those three words reinforce the belief that girls are somehow not as good as boys at certain things. Have you ever been told to ‘man up’ when you were upset, nervous or afraid? Being told to ‘man up’ suggests that it is not manly to feel those emotions and that being a man is a sign of strength in a way that being a woman isn’t. What we say matters. It is not fair or healthy to stop people from sharing their emotions. It leads to all sorts of problems from mental health issues to using physical violence as a way of letting those feelings out.
Learning Through Play In Argentina, The Salvation Army supports children who have experienced abuse at home. Through an activity club called Learning Through Play, boys and girls learn about understanding their emotions and solving problems without violence alongside fun games, sports and activities.
1 in 3 Challenge You can take a stand for gender justice by taking on the 1 in 3 Challenge as part of the Helping-Hand Appeal. The money raised will be used to support The Salvation Army’s gender justice projects, like Learning Through Play in Argentina. Read more about the 1 in 3 challenge by visiting justgiving.com/campaign/HelpingHand2022 then ask a grown-up to set up a Just Giving page for your challenge to keep track of your donations.
