Zoos and aquariums are amazing places. You can see a fluffy ferret, an enormous elephant, and everything in between! This week (28 May to 5 June) is Love Your Zoo Week. It’s run by the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums who want to make these places as great as possible. It’s a week to celebrate all the wonderful things that zoos and aquariums do and it’s a great time to support them. This year, the emphasis is love – because we all need love! Whether it’s breeding programmes to help species grow or special relationships between staff and animals, love is all around. Zoos are vital spaces for so many things. They help inspire people and connect humans to nature. You can also learn so much from a zoo and see species you wouldn’t get to see in everyday life. Zoos, aquariums, nature reserves and other similar places also help with conservation. This means they provide protection to animals who might be struggling in the wild and help species survive for longer, especially if they are threatened with extinction. This week, why don’t you visit a local zoo or aquarium close to you? Check out zoofederation.org.uk to find a zoo near you!

I once read a book called The Zoo: The Wild and Wonderful Tale of the Founding of London Zoo. To be honest, I didn’t find the tale wild or wonderful – I just found it really sad. Lots of animals were captured and taken to London, but almost none of them made it through their first British winter. Thankfully zoos in the UK have changed a lot since London Zoo opened in 1828. These days, zoos do important research to help us understand animals better and work hard to make sure some species don’t die out. It’s not just down to zoos to help save animals. As we’ve learned through our KA! JAM pages recently, we can all do our bit to make the world a better place – not only for animals, but for each other. What can you do to help make the world a better place for everything that lives here?

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT CARING ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE

Change Starts Here!

I

says Alicia Begley

like the sunshine – although I’ve been sunburnt before and it wasn’t pleasant! Warmer weather might sound nice, but scientists around the world are worried about global warming and the way it is impacting our planet. Climate change might seem like a thing you’ve just heard about on the news or at school, but it’s real. Sadly, the actions of humans mean it’s happening all around the globe, right now. Younger people will especially feel the effects as temperatures will be higher in the future and there’ll be more harmful gases that affect air quality. Climate change also means there’ll be more extreme events such as heatwaves and heavy rainfall that causes flooding. These changes affect everyone, but often the people

most affected have done the least to cause climate change. That’s why The Salvation Army, who publish Kids Alive!, is determined to help people overcome the challenges they face due to climate change. We often hear that world leaders and grown-ups in charge of businesses need to do more to reverse climate change, but we can all help protect our world. Think about how much you buy, the food you eat and the way you travel. If we all produce less waste and reduce our carbon footprint we can help others, animals and plants too. Remember, there’s still time to change what’s happening to our planet and you can be a part of that transformation. As the Bible cartoon opposite says, anything you do to help someone in need is actually doing something for Jesus.

30 Days Wild

You’ve heard of random acts of kindness, well now it’s time for random acts of wildness! For the month of June people will be taking part in 30 Days Wild, the United Kingdom’s biggest nature challenge.

Discover Your Wild Side Do you live in the countryside or near the beach? Perhaps you live in a busy city or near the woods. Below are some ideas of things you can do to get outside with friends and family and have fun no matter where you live.

Natural Therapy Nature is good for you! When you connect with nature there are loads of health benefits. Nature can lift your mood, help you to feel less anxious and improve your concentration. It also helps to improve heart health and boost your immune system. Being outdoors encourages exercise and spending time in the sun helps your body to produce vitamin D, which works to prevent diseases such as cancer. Scientists believe that sick people heal better when they spend time in nature and spending time in nature can even help people to live longer.

Caring for Creation Every living thing on the planet is connected, including humankind. We need nature and nature needs us! That’s why it’s so important to take care of our planet.

12 KA - p12-13 - 28 May.indd 1

20/05/2022 16:26

Essential Ecosystems Ecosystems are the way animals, plants and people – along with things such as rain and sunshine – work together. If one part of a community of living things is changed it affects the whole ecosystem. For example, if a disease kills plants in a pond, this affects the fish that eat them as well as the herons that feed on the fish.

Healthy ecosystems help to purify water, clean the air we breathe, put the right nutrients in soil, provide us with food and regulate the climate. Getting involved in 30 Days Wild can help to protect the UK’s ecosystems.

Get Ready to Go Wild! To take part, all you need to do is to sign up at wildlifetrusts.org to receive a free pack with fun activities and suggestions for each day.

Awesome Activities Activities will include wildlife watching, bug hunting, pond dipping, eating outdoors, planting wildflower seeds, listening to birdsong, litter picking or fundraising challenges for wildlife in your area – or simply going for a walk in the countryside. Most supporters who took part in previous challenges said their favourite activities were those that helped nature or increased their knowledge of the natural world.

Critters and Creatures Why don’t you record, photograph or draw some of the critters and creatures you see during 30 Days Wild? The UK is full of amazing wildlife – from teeny insects to larger mammals. It’s awesome to discover an animal or bug you’ve never seen before. There are about 27,000 different types of insect living in the UK and Ireland, and some of them can be spotted in your garden or local park. See if you can find any ladybirds, shield bugs or dragonflies or write down how many different butterflies are fluttering about. The best time to watch bigger wildlife – such as hedgehogs, foxes, badgers or deer – is early in the morning or at dusk in the evening.

Take a Moment to Listen Researchers have discovered that listening to birdsong – even if it’s only a recording – boosts people’s well-being! Ask your parents or carers if you can get up just before sunrise one morning to listen to the dawn chorus. See if you can tell a blackbird’s song from the warble of a thrush or pick out the trill of a wren or a robin. Whatever you choose to do each day, make sure you have fun and go wild!
