Are you a basketball fan? If you are, you’re going to love this week’s issue, because we’ve gone basketball crazy! By the way, did you know the first official basketball game was played just over 130 years ago? There were nine players on each team and the score was just 1-0. Basketball has come a long way since then. Each team is allowed just five players on court at a time and it’s not unusual for scorelines to run into the hundreds. Watching basketball is fun, but like any sport it’s most fun when you join in and play the game. It’s the same with being a Christian – you have to be active to get the most from it. Spending time with Jesus through prayer and reading your Bible will help you to work out the best way to live. Then with God’s help you can put the things you learned into action.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT DIFFERENT WAYS WE CAN LOVE GOD AND LOVE PEOPLE

What Makes You Great?

W

ho do you think is the most important person in the country? Is it the Queen or prime minister? What about the manager of the biggest football club or the wealthiest person in the nation? Now imagine life without teachers, nurses, firefighters or police officers, or if no one cleaned the streets or fetched rubbish! These people aren’t famous or wealthy, but they are super-important. Jesus is the most important person of all, yet he calls himself a servant. He served us by giving up his life so that we could enjoy a relationship with God. Jesus asks his followers to be like servants too. That’s because God thinks those who show Jesus’ love to others by serving them are the greatest! (Check out Luke 22:24–27).

asks Melita Day-Lewis

Serving others, no matter who they are, is one of five important ways The Salvation Army (who publish Kids Alive!) seeks to love God and love others. The other ways are: sharing the good news about Jesus; nurturing people by helping them to grow in their friendship with God; caring for creation by looking after the planet and seeking justice by being fair to everyone and helping make life better for all. Doing these will help us to follow God’s two most important instructions: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind’ and ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ (Matthew 22: 37 and 39). Why don’t you think about how you can start to put these five things into practice?

What’s your favourite Bible verse and do you know it off by heart? If so, do you often repeat it to yourself? Reciting Scripture we’ve memorised is a great way of expressing how we feel – all our joy, hopes and concerns. It’s also a great reminder of God’s promises and enormous love for us. That’s why in Deuteronomy 18:11, we’re encouraged to place God’s word in our ‘hearts and minds’. So have a go at learning the Bible verses below… Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Proverbs 3:5–6 (The Message)

Be Kind to Others Over the last few weeks, we’ve talked about how wonderful you are and how you can look after yourself and make yourself feel good. But did you know that God made us all and he loves everyone no matter what? That’s why it’s important that we not only take care of ourselves, but we do our best to be kind to others too.

What is Bullying? Have you ever bitten into an apple and it’s had lots of bruises and brown mush inside? You might not have been able to tell from the outside that it was damaged inside. No matter what you do to the apple you can’t make the bruises go away. Teasing someone about the way they look is never OK! Remember that just like God made you, he made other people too and he loves us all.

Bullying can be like this. When someone is unkind to another person it can make them feel very sad inside, even if they don’t show it. Bullying can be physically hurting someone – like pushing and pinching – or it can be using mean words to upset someone on purpose.

Bullying can also happen online by sending cruel messages to a person you know or even someone you don’t know. It is important to always be kind to everyone you meet – they might be struggling with things that you don’t know about.

Bible Bubble The Bible Bubble verses for this week come from 1 Peter 3: 8–9 and say: ‘So all of you should live together in peace. Try to understand each other. Love each other like brothers and sisters. Be kind and humble. Don’t do wrong to anyone to pay them back for doing wrong to you. Or don’t insult anyone to pay them back for insulting you. But ask God to bless them. Do this because you yourselves were chosen to receive a blessing.’ (Easy-to-Read Version). It isn’t easy to be kind to everyone all the time, but we should always try our best. Even if someone is rude to you, ask God to help you to be nice in return.

What Can You Do About Bullying? If a person is being bullied they can feel sad, embarrassed, worried, hurt and scared, which is why we should be kind to other people and help others to feel good. It’s also important to spend time with people who are kind to you and who you enjoy spending time with. If you or someone you know is being bullied, you can tell a grown-up you trust. If you see a friend being unkind to someone it’s a good idea to tell them that you don’t like what they are doing.

Your Turn! Create an anti-bullying superhero! What special things can your superhero do to help everyone feel loved and important?
