he time to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee has finally arrived, but what’s all the fuss about? Well, jubilee is just a fancy word for a right royal celebration and platinum is a name for a 70th anniversary. So this weekend we’re celebrating 70 years since Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II. And she’s the first British monarch ever to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee! There’s plenty going on to mark this historic milestone, which is an amazing achievement for the Queen who celebrated her 96th birthday in April. For a start, most of us get a couple of extra days off! Families and friends will join with neighbours to celebrate at street parties and other gatherings. On Thursday (2 June) more than 1,400 soldiers and around 240 horses took part in the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony, which marks the Queen’s official birthday. And a chain of 1,500 beacons were lit across the UK, plus beacons in the 54 Commonwealth countries’ capital cities. On Saturday (4 June) there’s a Platinum Party at the Palace featuring a host of famous musicians and other stars. And finally, on Sunday (5 June) the Platinum Jubilee Pageant will tell the story of the Queen’s reign and the United Kingdom’s transformation during that time.

T

For more info about national Platinum Jubilee events or celebrations near you, check out platinumjubilee.gov.uk The BBC will televise a number of Platinum Jubilee celebrations and you can catch up on anything you’ve missed on BBC iPlayer

I can’t believe this, but not only am I old enough to remember the Queen’s Diamond and Golden Jubilees, I also remember the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. School gave me a Silver Jubilee T-shirt and a mug with a picture of the Queen on it. We held a street party with a big buffet, games, competitions and a bouncy castle! I wish I could tell you that I had a wonderful time, but I had an ear infection and spent most of the day in bed. That’s a reminder that life is full of its ups and downs. While some celebrate, others can’t or don’t want to. Even the Queen’s long reign hasn’t always been happy and glorious. Thankfully, Jesus is always there for us whatever life brings. He doesn’t promise to make life problem free, but he will always help us to make the very best of life.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT BEING FAIR IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE

Fairness Brings Justice

T

he other day, a friend told me their son was upset about lots of the stuff that’s going on in the world. At school they’ve been talking about big world issues – climate change, poverty, racism, war, modern slavery – and he gets worried. That got me worried, because we often discuss these things in Kids Alive! and I really don’t want our readers to worry. Then I looked at this week’s KA! JAM topic and thought, ‘Justice! Great! More big stuff to worry my friend’s son!’ Just because we’re thinking about justice doesn’t mean you have to worry about the big stuff. You see, justice is a kind of fancy word for fairness. And there are loads of ways you can be fair without

says Justin Reeves

trying to solve big world issues. You can be fair – or just – by: including as many children as possible when you’re playing; sharing with your siblings; speaking up when someone’s getting picked on; making sure you stick to the rules; helping friends who are stuck with schoolwork or have problems they can’t figure out. The cartoon Bible story opposite reminds us that Jesus knows there’s injustice in the world and has a plan to make things fair again. So, if you’re worried about the big stuff, speak to him about it. And if you feel the need to do something practical to sort out big world issues, chat to a grown-up you trust to see if there are some simple things you can do to help.

Fair Prayer Use this space to write a list of unfair situations you would like Jesus to help with. You could write a prayer about things that are worrying you. Or you could draw a picture that shows what fairness is.

National Best Friend Day!

Pals, companions, chums and amigos – our friends come in all varieties. Whether it’s people you’ve known for years or brand-new buddies, it’s always good to share how much you appreciate them. This week you have the perfect opportunity to do that, cos 8 June is National Best Friend Day!

Fantastic Friendships! Friendships can bring joy to our lives in lots of ways. But did you know they can even be good for our health and well-being?

Having good friendships can improve your physical health, and friends can encourage you to make good choices. For example, you might have a friend who likes to ride their bike or go swimming, which helps you to get involved too. Friends can push you to work hard and be the best you can be. Having a good friend can even help you get better quicker when you’re poorly and reduce the possibility of getting nasty illnesses.

Friends are also great to help you when you’re having a hard time and cheer you up when you’re feeling glum. Spending time with good friends can help you feel less stressed and sad, and friends can boost your self-esteem, helping you to feel more confident!

12 KA - p12-13 - 4 June.indd 1

27/05/2022 11:37

Do You Need a Bestie? Quite simply, no. Some people love to have one absolute best friend who they tell everything, while others prefer a group of people to be their friends. You might have different friends for different places – some friends at school and others at church, youth groups or clubs. You might have a sibling or a cousin who is your best friend. Perhaps you enjoy long-distance friendships with people all over the country or even all over the world! Some people enjoy spending time by themselves while others prefer getting out to play with friends and meeting new people.

It doesn’t matter what your friendships are like and who you’re friends with as long as you’re happy and enjoy spending time with them. However you like to interact with your friends, take some time this week to show them some love!

Making New Friends No matter how many pals you have, there’s always room for more! The wonderful thing about people is that we’re all different. Introverts (people who can be shy) might not like to make new friends but extroverts enjoy chatting and meeting people. If you see someone at school or at your clubs who doesn’t have a friend to play with, introduce yourself and make them feel welcome. Who knows? You might make a new bestie! It’s interesting to have friends who are different from you. You and your friends might have different hair or skin, your accents might be different or your family traditions, customs and celebrations might be different. It’s good to appreciate each other’s uniqueness and learn from each other.

Ultimate Bestie Remember, if you ever feel like you have no one to turn to, Jesus is your real best friend for life. He will always be there for you and love you no matter what. If you don’t know what it’s like to be a friend of Jesus, talk to a parent or someone at your church or youth group who can help you take those first steps to having the best friend ever!
