In the United Kingdom we might not have much snow right now, but you can enjoy plenty of skiing, snowboarding, ice skating and more with the 2022 Winter Olympics! They got under way in Beijing, China on 4 February and will run till 20 February. Beijing is the first city in the world to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics and Paralympics! The 2022 Games include seven key sports with lots of different varieties and events in each. These sports are bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, luge, skating, skiing and biathlon. Great Britain has sent a squad to every Winter Olympics since they started in 1924. This year Team GB has around 50 awesome athletes including three sets of siblings! Look out for Izzy and Zoe Atkin, and Leonie and Makayla Gerken Schofield in the freestyle skiing, as well as Farrell and Niall Treacy in the short track speed skating. One person expected to do well is alpine skier Dave Ryding. He recently made history by winning Great Britain’s first ever gold medal at the Alpine Ski World Cup. This means he was the quickest person to slide down snowy slopes on skis and zigzag in between poles. Dave and his fellow athletes are all going to be trying their best to win gold medals for Team GB at the Winter Olympic Games! You can watch the Winter Olympics 2022 on BBC and BBC iPlayer. The Winter Paralympics will take place in Beijing in March. Be sure to check back here for exciting information closer to the time!

It seems to me that a lot of winter sports are dangerous. Take ski jumping, for example – flying off the end of a huge slope before landing on compacted snow. Crazy! I’m sure competitors would say the risks are worth it – especially if they win a medal. I’ve never strapped on a pair of skis and launched myself into the air, but there have been times when I’ve had to be brave. Making big changes or trying new things can be scary. Standing up for what I think is right sometimes requires bravery. Even letting other people know that I’m a Christian can feel risky. But it’s always been worth it. Do you know what? I’ve never had to face any of those challenges alone – Jesus has always been right beside me. The cool thing is he’s there for you too – you just have to trust him to help you.

Good News for Everyone

D

o you enjoy watching the news? If I had to guess, I reckon the answer might be, ‘Not really’. Although the news can be helpful for learning about what’s happening around the world, far too often what we hear can be sad and worrying. However, as Christians we have access to some wonderful news – the Good News of Jesus! In this week’s Bible story, Simon has just heard the bad news that John the Baptist has been arrested. But just as he begins to worry, Jesus arrives to personally invite him and Andrew to join him as he shares the message of God’s Kingdom. Jesus calls this message ‘good news’. But why is it good news? Well, while Jesus lived on Earth, he showed people how much God

by Ibukun Baku

truly loved and cared for them. He healed the sick, spent time with people others looked down on and encouraged everyone to follow God’s way for living. Not only that, but Jesus chose to take the punishment for the wrong things that we do by dying on the cross. This selfless action made it possible for everyone to have a new relationship with God. Imagine if more people knew how much Jesus loves them and wants to be their friend. How different might the world be if more people chose to be like him and follow his example of loving others. Just as Jesus called Andrew and Simon to follow him and share the Good News, Jesus calls us to share his message too. Is there someone you know who you would like to share this good news with?

While we were on the boat, it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. There was a large flood that covered the whole Earth.

I lived on it with my family and lots of animals.

I sent out a dove to see if there was any dry land and it returned with an olive leaf in its beak.

How well do you know your Bible heroes? Can you name the boy who took on a giant or the girl who watched over her little brother as he sailed down the stream in a basket? Budding artists should tune into CBBC and BBC iPlayer from Monday 7 February and check out Britain’s Best Young Artist – a brand new CBBC show, which sees 27 young artists compete to become the best young artist in the UK. In each episode, three contenders will take part in an Inspiration Day, designed to challenge and stretch their artistic muscles, before returning to the art studio to create a showstopping artwork. Wannabe champions need to impress presenter Ricky Wilson and a guest judge who will decide who moves on to the next round. Artists who make the semi-finals will be asked to create a piece of art for a celebrity. The top three artists will make it to the final where they’ll use their creative skills and experience to produce a masterpiece that depicts their home town. The winner will be crowned Britain’s Best Young Artist and have the privilege of seeing their winning artwork displayed at an art gallery in their home town. Presenters Ricky Wilson and Vick Hope

Jesus is the Reason Members of Welling Salvation Army are very proud of the fact that they are able to support local organisa tions. Captain Katy Shubotham supports a local church with their guiding groups and is a Rainbow leader. At Christmas she shared with the girls about the work she does with The Salvation Army. When Rainbows returned in the New Year they pres ented her with a picture of baby Jesus for her to put in her office. The girls remembered that Jesus was the person who kept Katy going so they wanted her to have a reminder in her office.
