ith the recent storms and chilly winds, winter seems to be hanging around. The good news is you can start feeling summery early by watching one of the most important events in this year’s sports calendar – the Women’s World Cup! The covers were lifted yesterday (Friday 4 March) for the opening matches of the tournament. Eight teams have qualified for the one-day international (ODI) competition, including hosts New Zealand, World Cup Champions England, runners-up India, and current world number one Australia. England face Australia today. It’s their first meeting since England’s crushing defeat by Australia in the Ashes Series in January. Will England recover their confidence, take enough wickets and pile up plenty of runs to get through the rounds and defend their title? Whatever the outcome, there’ll be plenty of exciting action as world-class cricketers battle it out on the pitch. See how many wickets England’s Katherine Brunt can take – she’s thought to be the greatest female fast bowler in the nation’s history! And keep an eye out for Australia’s captain, Meg Lanning, who’s scored the most centuries in women’s ODI and is the first Australian to hit the 2,000 run-mark in Twenty20 internationals.

WOM E CRICK N'S WORL ET D CUP 2022

The Women’s World Cup takes place from 4 March to 3 April. You can watch all the matches on Sky Sports TV.

I have to confess, I’m not really a cricket fan. I’ve been to a few cricket matches in my time and the things I’ve enjoyed most are the snacks and chatting to my friends. That doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with cricket – I know loads of people who think it’s the greatest sport ever. It’s just not my cup of tea. I’m sure there are people who don’t enjoy watching football as much as I do. That’s one of the cool things about people – we’re all different! We look different, we like different things and we even sound different. It would be a boring old world if we were all the same, wouldn’t it? God made each of us unique and I think that’s something to celebrate. This week, make some time to enjoy something you love doing. And remember to thank God for the things that make you you!

Love God, Love Others

ave you seen the new Disney film Encanto? I really like it – and the catchy songs! The Madrigal family all have amazing gifts – except for Mirabel, that is. God has given all of us gifts, talents and resources – not to prove how great we are or make us feel better about ourselves, but to serve others. For some of you, like Mirabel, it might be hard to know what gifts you have. You may not be super strong or be able to control the weather, but you can still use what you have to help others. Jesus loved to help people. It didn’t matter if they were smelly, dirty, rich or poor – he helped people without showing favouritism. Wouldn’t it be amazing

if we all treated people the way Jesus did? The Bible tells us that when we help someone in need, we are doing it for Jesus. If you aren’t sure what your gifts are or how you can help people, you might want to think about giving something up for a little while to support those in need. Every year, people connected with The Salvation Army take part in the Self-Denial Appeal. The idea is that you go without something for a week or even a month – that’s the ‘self-denial’ bit. Then the money you save, or any money you decide to give, supports the work of The Salvation Army around the world. This week, think about how you can use your gifts to care for creation and other people.

How well do you know your Bible heroes? Can you name the boy who took on a giant or the girl who watched over her little brother as he sailed down the stream in a basket? The Bible is filled with amazing stories of ordinary people who, with God’s help, did extraordinary things. So read the clues below and guess who this week’s Bible hero is!

I learnt about God at an early age from my mother, Eunice, and grandmother, Lois.

I joined Paul as he travelled around sharing the good news of Jesus.

Women’s History Month Throughout history women have played an important role in society, but they have not always been recognised for their contribution. International Women’s Day In the same way, International Women’s Day is a chance to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness against bias and take action for equality.

Helping-Hand 2022 Have you heard of the Helping-Hand Appeal? It’s an annual fundraising project run by The Salvation Army’s International Development UK and Family Ministries units. Aimed at encouraging people to look beyond their own communities and help others around the world, this year’s focus is Gender Justice.

12 KA - p12-13 - 5 March.indd 1

25/02/2022 16:22

What Is Gender?

Gender Justice

Gender refers to the characteristics of women, men, girls and boys that are created by society. How we understand gender changes over time, and though it is related, it’s not based on our biology.

We were all created in God’s image – men and women are equal in the eyes of God. Sadly, women are more affected by poverty, the climate crisis and genderbased violence. That’s why The Salvation Army is working with women around the world to ensure they have equal access to rights and opportunities, and the freedom to flourish. We support projects in places such as Argentina and Bangladesh and we’ll learn more about these projects over the next few weeks.

History Makers Keystone Press / Alamy

The Women’s Cricket World Cup takes place this month. Women have been playing cricket since the 18th century and in 1887 the first women’s cricket team was formed. In 1973, the first Women’s Cricket World Cup took place – two years ahead of men’s cricket. Those early female cricketers were pioneers. At a time when women were expected to be gentle and to stay indoors (and certainly not be running around with bats!), they stepped outside and boldly showed that women can play sports too.

Stock Photo

Cricketers at the first Women’s Cricket World Cup in 1973

I Can Do That! There are many examples throughout history of women being told they can’t do something because they are women, and many examples of women who, in return, have shown that they can. Have you ever been told you can’t do something because of your gender? It’s not just women who are told they can’t do things because of who they are. Some people say that certain toys, emotions, hobbies or jobs are for either boys/men or girls/women, not both. But this is not only limiting and unfair, it is untrue! We can see throughout history, and to the present day, that girls, boys, women and men can be whoever they want to be – from astronauts to zookeepers and everything in between!

What Now? There are countless women who have made a difference to our world in their own ways. But they have at least one thing in common – bravery! In a world which told them they couldn’t do something because of their gender – they did it anyway! They created, pioneered and challenged. Not all of us will be written about in books or magazines in years to come (though maybe you will be!) but we can all make a difference. We can all help to make the world a better, more equal place. Over the next few weeks, we’ll share ideas about how you can take a stand for gender justice, and support The Salvation Army’s Helping-Hand Appeal. If you want to know more in the meantime, visit salvationarmy.org.uk/helpinghand2022.

Isla’s Commitment

Isla Shaw’s grandma, Carolyn, wrote to us to tell us how proud she is of her granddaughter. At school Isla made a Christingle, which is an orange, wrapped in red ribbon, topped with dried fruits or sweets and a candle. It represents Jesus bringing light to all of creation by dying for all of us. Instead of going to the Christingle service at the local church, she took it to her Salvation Army church in Newbury. Isla was very proud to take the Christingle and explain to everyone that she loves Jesus and Jesus is the light of the world. Isla also signed a commitment card to show that she wants to keep being like Jesus and being kind to everyone. Remember, you’re never too young to tell everybody about Jesus and how much he loves us! Well done, Isla!
