Elmer and his mum, Dela, have a happy life in their small town. Dela runs a store and Elmer loves helping her out by serving customers. However, when times get really tough the two must move to Nevergreen City. Staying in a tiny apartment with leaky taps, Elmer’s mum struggles to get enough money for them to pay their rent and eat, let alone save for a new store.
After a big argument with his mum, Elmer runs away and his life takes a magical twist. He meets a talking cat, who tells him of a dragon who needs rescuing, and sends Elmer off on an incredible adventure.
After travelling on a whale to Wild Island, Elmer discovers all kinds of ferocious creatures … and an adorable stripy dragon called Boris. Boris isn’t the fearsome, re-breathing dragon Elmer was expecting, though. He’s scared of re for starters! Despite his fears, Boris’s destiny is to save the island from sinking. The problem is he doesn’t know how to do it. So Elmer and he join forces and soon discover a friendship that will last a lifetime.

Honesty is the Best Policy says Melita Day-Lewis
Do you nd it dif cult to tell the truth – especially when you know people won’t like what you say? I do! It can be dif cult because we want people to like us – or we don’t want to hurt their feelings.
Daniel told Belshazzar the truth, even though it wasn’t good news. If Belshazzar got angry, he could kill Daniel! However, Daniel knew telling the truth was more important than protecting himself. He told the king exactly what the writing on the wall meant: Belshazzar had used special cups dedicated to God to worship idols – as a result, the king would soon die and his kingdom would be split up.
The king didn’t get mad, but rewarded Daniel. That’s because Daniel bravely told him the truth. If someone
tells the truth in a kind way – including things that are hard to hear – we will respect them. It’s dif cult to admire someone who tells lies and you can’t really trust them.
We don’t always tell the truth in make-believe games, and that’s OK. But lying to make people like us, avoid getting into trouble or out of something you don’t want to do are wrong. Once we start lying it can become a habit and lying harms our friendships. Not only that, but scientists also believe that lying is bad for your health!
Even if others don’t know we’re lying, God does. Honesty is always the best policy! It makes God happy, protects our relationships and helps us to feel more peaceful.
When we tell lies we can feel bad. However, when we say sorry to God, he puts a smile back on the inside. Here’s a prayer to help you to say sorry about any lies you might have told – and to ask God for his help to tell the truth. Once you’ve prayed, tick the boxes next to the praying hands and smiley face.

Switch Off Fortnight
Switch Off Fortnight is happening from 14–27 November. It’s all about saving energy. Not the energy you use to run, skip, dance or play with your friends, though. It’s the energy we use to power things, such as light bulbs, heating and vehicles.
The aim of Switch Off Fortnight is to encourage as many people as possible to cut back on the energy they use by switching things off. This is great for two reasons. First, it saves people money – energy is really expensive so using less costs less. Second, it helps tackle climate change and protect our planet.
If your school isn’t already signed up to take part in Switch Off Fortnight, ask your teacher to visit jointhepod.org/campaigns/switch-off-fortnight. There are loads of resources to help your school learn about and cut back on energy use.
You can start Switch Off Fortnight by doing an energy walk around the school. Count how many lights are on. Also count other devices, such as computers or interactive boards. At the end of the two weeks, you can repeat your walk and see if the school has got better at saving energy.
Switch Off at School Start Saving
Here are some ways you can help your school save energy during Switch Off Fortnight…
Turn off lights that don’t need to be on.
Make sure blinds are up to let in natural light and reduce the need for turning on light bulbs.
Turn off computers when they’re not being used.
Remind teachers to turn off any interactive boards when they’re not using them.
12
Turn off the water taps after you’ve washed your hands. Leaving them running even a little bit wastes a lot of water.
Ask your teachers to talk to the school leaders about switching all the light bulbs in the school to LED bulbs. These reduce carbon emissions and are better for the environment.
The school could also use sensor lights that only switch on when they need to.
Can you walk, cycle or scoot to school rather than going in the car or by bus? This won’t save the school energy, but it will make a difference to the environment.
Take the Lesson Home
Switch Off Fortnight doesn’t have to be just a school project. You can take what you learn about energy saving at school, home!
Turning down a room thermostat by just one degree can save a lot of energy. So ask your parents or carers to consider lowering the temperature of your heating. If you’re cold, put an extra jumper on!
Whenever you leave a room, make sure you switch off the light. There’s no point lighting a room nobody is in. Switching your home light bulbs to LED bulbs is also a good energy-saving idea.
Another top tip is not leaving devices in standby mode. That includes TVs, games consoles and computers. Also, ask your parents or carers to only ll the kettle with the amount of water that’s needed. Boiling more water than they’re going to use is a waste of water and electricity.
Speaking of water, make sure you turn those taps off when you’re brushing your teeth. This saves energy and water, and so does having short showers instead of baths.
Get in Touch
Let us know how you get on with Switch Off Fortnight by emailing kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. We’d love to hear what energy-saving heroes you’ve become!

Cool Colourings
Eleanor, age 8, sent us this awesome Black History Month Colouring of Dr Maggie. The stars look so beautiful. We hope you enjoyed colouring it!
Daisy, age 8, also sent us a Black History Month Colouring. She’s coloured in Hamza Yassin. Great choice of colours!
This Black History Month Colouring is a picture of explorer Dwayne Fields. It was sent to us by Lilith, age 11, and we think it’s epic!
Rosie, age 7, sent us a Commonwealth Colouring featuring a brilliant basketball player. We love the added details on the court and in the background.
Harvest Creation
Young people from Bridgwater Salvation Army’s Sunday Club joined forces to make bread. They created a traditional wheatsheaf to celebrate Harvest and their beautiful creation included a mouse and spider. It was a wonderful opportunity to thank God for all that he gives us. The wheatsheaf took ve hours to cook and was varnished before being added to the Harvest display for all to see.

This bold and bright Commonwealth Colouring was sent by Al e, age 8. That court looks like a really happy place to enjoy a game of basketball.
Aanan, age 9, also chose to send us a Commonwealth Colouring and we love it! The colours of the wheelchair are particularly cool.
