emembrance Sunday (12 November) is a day to remember people who have served and given up their time, or even their lives, to protect us. That includes members of the Armed Forces from the United Kingdom and from the Commonwealth. On this special day we also remember people who work in the emergency services and those who have lost their lives because of conflict around the world. This year, The Royal British Legion wants us to think about the theme Service. Being a member of the Armed Forces or emergency services has a big impact on those who serve and their families. There’s often physical, mental or emotional injury or trauma to face, as well as having to give up time with their loved ones. There are lots of different ways to show you’re taking part in Remembrance. Some people wear red poppies – a symbol of remembrance and hope for peace. Others will attend special services at cenotaphs all over the UK. Each service will include a two minutes’ silence at 11am. This is the perfect time to be still and think of all those who have served us in the past and those who still serve us today.
EM
At 11 o’clock on Sunday something unusual is going to happen… I’m going to be quiet for two whole minutes. That’s because this Sunday is Remembrance Sunday when we’re encouraged to ‘Remember Them’. But who are ‘Them’? Well, ‘Them’ is anyone who lost their life as a result of war – especially members of the Armed Forces and emergency services who gave their lives to protect us. Remembrance Sunday is not about celebrating or glorifying war – it’s about being grateful for the lives we’re free to live thanks to those who lost their lives. Two minutes can seem like a long time, so why not turn to page 11 and check out our special Remembrance Colouring – we thought it might help you to focus during the silence. And if you can’t mark the two minutes’ silence on Sunday, take some time out another time to pray for peace and remember them.

Jesus’ School of Rock by Justin Reeves
W
ho’s your favourite teacher and why? At my school there was a teacher called Mr Gelsthorpe. He was old, very strict and he spat when he spoke. But ask anyone from my school who their favourite teacher was and they’d probably say, ‘Mr Gelsthorpe’. You see, Mr Gelsthorpe made learning fun. His lessons involved quizzes, experiments, making things, drawing, discussions and demonstrations. It also helped that he taught us about really interesting stuff – things we’d never heard of before and would blow our minds! When Jesus taught people, he didn’t just talk at them, he asked questions, told stories and showed people how to live. In this week’s cartoon Bible story
we see Jesus blowing people’s minds. The things he said were completely different to anything they’d heard before. He made them feel important and loved. Most importantly, Jesus made it clear that people should do their best to live God’s way by following his example. There are all sorts of people who teach you all sorts of things – mostly things that are helpful and good for you. But the most important lesson to learn is to do your best to live Jesus’ way. When you put him first, listen to his teaching and try to follow his example, you’ll be able to live your best life through him. That way when tough stuff does come along you know that Jesus has your back and is doing his best to make things good again.

A model of the Salyut space station series
The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!
Salyut Salyut was the first ever series of space stations to be created as part of the space race. A space station isn’t quite the same as a train station or a bus station, but in fact it’s a type of spacecraft that constantly travels around Earth. Astronauts can live on a space station for days or months at a time so they can collect data and do experiments.
The first space station was launched by the Soviet Union in 1971 and it was named Salyut 1. The plan was for this space station to circle Earth for ever, but Salyut 1 fell back to Earth after only about six months. After that six more space stations were in space ore launched. Between 1982 and 1986, for m20 0 than 22 people lived on the Salyut days! series of space stations at different times. Some astronauts stayed on board for more than 200 days collecting a lot of useful data for future missions.

Prrayer Say A Little P Do you try to make time to pray? Praying is a really important part of being a Christian. It’s a way to communicate with God and by sharing our good news or problems we can become closer to him. If you don’t pray much, you might be surprised to know it’s really simple and easy to do.
How to Pray The best thing about prayer is you can do it any way you want. Although lots of people like to pray by sitting quietly with their hands together, that’s not the only way. You can write a prayer down, say it aloud, draw it, sing it, even shout it! God doesn’t mind, he just wants you to communicate with him.
Where to Pray Prayer can also be done wherever you like. You can pray in church, Sunday school or at school. Or you can do it on the bus, in the car, on a train or while you walk to school. You could even do it while you’re on a roller coaster! Which many people have probably done if they’re scared!
Who to Pray With Another special thing about prayer is that it can be done with others or alone. Praying by yourself before you go to bed is lovely, but so is sharing prayer time with friends or family. Some families like to say a prayer of grace before mealtimes that thanks God for their food.
12 KA - p12-13 - 11 November.indd 1
03/11/2023 11:01
What To Say Now you know that prayer can be done however and wherever you like, you might be wondering what to pray about. So here are some ideas. Lots of people like to praise God in their prayers. This might be telling him how amazing he is, how loving he is or how caring he is.
Prayer time is also a good opportunity to ask for forgiveness for anything wrong we’ve done. It could be saying sorry for saying something mean about another person, fighting with a sibling or not doing what your teacher asked you to do.
Thanksgiving prayers are ones that thank God for the many amazing things in our lives. You could thank God for the world he created for us, the family he’s given you or the food, drink and shelter you’re fortunate enough to have.
You can also ask for God’s help. Perhaps you need help with schoolwork, making friends or the strength to stand up to bullies. God is there to listen to anything you need to talk about.
Prayers can be for others as well as yourself. If you have a friend or family member who is poorly, you might want to pray for healing. You might also want to pray for people you don’t know – people who are experiencing homelessness or those who live in dangerous parts of the world.
Praying for Peace Unfortunately there are still parts of our world where people are losing homes or loved ones because of war or conflict. There is fighting in Ukraine and in Gaza and many innocent people have been hurt or killed because of it. So praying for peace is just as important as it’s ever been. If you want you can use the space below to write or draw a prayer for peace. You could also use it as a space to pray for people who have lost family or friends.

Well, you know you keep telling me there are consequences for being naughty.
Why have you got a black eye, Norman?
I do. I often remind you of the expression…
…’What goes around comes around’, which means you get what you deserve.
Well, unfortunately that’s literally what happened to me.
Yesterday in the playground, I deliberately pushed my friend really hard on the roundabout…
…But I SPAN HIM so fast, when he came around after one spin he fell off and landed on top of me and gave me a black eye.
